Poet, activist, and educator Sonia Sanchez has been an incredible force in using the poetic word to call attention to the overarching power of the African-American people, to address the need for resistance against systems of violence and oppression, and to encourage the next generation to activate forms of resistance in their own lives. In honor of this legacy and the awarding of Sanchez with an honorary degree from Arcadia University at the Commencement ceremonies, the Center for Antiracist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action (CASAA)—along with the Office of Access, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (AEDI); the Pan-African Studies Program; and the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), Del Val Section—issued a call for submissions for a digital chapbook to be called Sonku for Sonia. This collection of poems from faculty, staff, and students at Arcadia as well as poets in the community reflects upon the unique poetic form that Sanchez invented herself—a symbol of the longstanding impact she has had on us all.
