NEXT UP: ARE WE LITERATE? ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS: EXPLORING GLOBAL AND CULTURAL LITERACIES

This session seeks to frame a dialogue around the question “Are We Literate?” by exploring evaluation strategies and collection development policies as pathways to providing literacy instruction in a multiliterate world. By asking the right questions, educators can successfully review, select, and promote inclusive texts that support diverse students as they learn about themselves and the world around them.
SPEAKER: BARBARA BOWMAN | AISC LIBRARIES Barbara Bowman has been teaching in international schools around the world for twenty years in both the classroom and the library, across sections. Barbara received her M.L.I.S. from Florida State University and she is passionate about the continued evolution of school libraries. She has presented at the AASSA conference about how libraries can be reimagined for the 21st century and she believes that literature can be most powerful when inclusive texts are the norm.
SPEAKER: MARION WHISNANT | AISC LIBRARIES Marion Whisnant has been teaching in international schools for nine years. In her role as a teacher librarian, she has worked with students from early years to Grade 12. She received her M.A. in Education with a concentration in school librarianship from Marshall University. Through her work with IB and Capstone Research, Marion has seen the transformational nature of guided and independent research and the deep understandings and insights students gain by examining a multiplicity of perspectives.
