New beginnings...change....growth. As summer winds down and I reflect over the past couple of months, I am amazed by the tremendous amount of activities I have seen here in Gleannloch Farms. Since the last edition of GLF Style was published, we’ve all been witness to a number of changes: the improvements and widening of Champion Forest Dr. is becoming a reality...on the south side of the neighborhood I am pleased to be able to highlight the construction and opening of the Goddard School...on the north side construction of another new section of homes has begun...and let’s not forget the continued upgrades to the golf course and club facilities.

It has been a busy summer...and for those of us with children...school is now just around the corner!

If you would like to advertise or want information about us, please call 713-504-9789 or email

On a personal note...GLF Style has grown to almost 6,000 copies distributed to the households here in Gleannloch and expanded distribution to a number of surrounding business and civic centers. I am excited about the feedback I am getting from neighbors and from businesses that want to continue to service and help our community grow.

Swimming

with Dogs by: Carla Hoch

Gleannloch Residents, Nilay & Manisha, have a special love for their Golden Retriever “Casper the Cowboy”. Part of the reason they chose this wonderful neighborhood was because of its many walking trails and areas designed especially for pet lovers like them. Casper, like all real cowboys, has had his share of bumps and bruises. Thankfully, the great staff at Houston’s own Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists has been able to keep him in the saddle. Unfortunately, after a particularly difficult injury, Caspar had a problem getting back his “hitch” in his “get-a-long”. His loving owners found out that arthritis was the reason and immediately begin seeking out a way to get their faithful friend back to his old self. Hoping for a natural way to help Casper, the couple visited Rummy’s Beach Club. Rummy, for whom the club is named, is a blind Siberian Husky found while wandering the streets of Houston. Now, five years later, the formerly starving and severely neglected dog has his “own” business helping fellow four-footed friends get the specialized care that he himself needed.

The main pool holds 15,000 gallons of water, has a beach entry (one that slopes down gradually) and is surrounded by slip resistant decking. The pool water is kept clean by not only a commercial sized filtration system but a UV Pool Sanitizing System as well that uses the same technology used to sanitize drinking water. The entire swimming area is enclosed by fencing to keep the fury swimmers safe. Rummy’s not only offers therapy but classes that are just about having fun. A dog can enroll in a Dock Jumping class or enroll their human in a Canine CPR, doggie massage or holistic dog care course. There is even a class designed to help humans better communicate with their dog! And I am willing to bet one of the first things a human will find their four-legged friend trying to convey is, “take me back to Rummy’s!” Rummy’s Beach Club is a warm water swimming facility designed specifically for dogs. Warm water exercise is an excellent way for cowboys like Caspar to build up strength, ease stiff joints and relax sore muscles. The water’s buoyancy also greatly reduces the pressure on the joints, making it easier for Caspar to mozy with a full range of motion. It also feels really gooooood and helps calm not only the muscles but the nerves of dogs anxious from injury or ill-treatment. Rummy's is located 22111 Fields Lane Spring, TX 77389. The Goddard School® Located in Spring is Open The Goddard School located at 8727 Eastloch Drive in Spring is currently enrolling children, and opened in August. The new state-of-art 9,500 square foot building has been designed to accommodate 154 children from six weeks to six years old. The new School will offer flexible schedules for children Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Goddard School focuses on building a strong and balanced foundation of emotional, social, cognitive, and physical skills for each child. Children are encouraged to develop at their own pace in a warm environment supported by a team of dedicated teachers. Goddard’s year round program provides consistency for children, while the choice of either a half or full-day schedule offers flexibility for families. The Goddard School’s unique FLEX™ Learning Program is a comprehensive play-centered curriculum that was developed based on the latest research in how children learn. Qualified teachers observe and assess where each child is in all areas of development and skillfully weave in engaging learning activities that build upon what individual children can do and encourage them to try new things. In addition to a comprehensive curriculum, The Goddard School provides a variety of enrichment programs to enhance each child’s learning experience. In each classroom, teachers develop lesson plans and create an atmosphere where children can learn and gain the skills that will guide them toward future academic success. Each Goddard School has an Owner and Education Director on-site. Goddard Owners are hands-on: they are available to the faculty as well as the children and their families every day. The Education Director is responsible for the curriculum and programming. This dual management system allows freedom for the Director to observe classrooms, mentor faculty and develop a healthy learning environment for children. Asha Patel, the owner of the new school in Spring, recognizes the importance of a safe and nurturing learning environment for young children. She is happy to be able to provide Goddard’s outstanding program to the children in the community. “I am excited and proud to be a part of Goddard and am committed to providing the highest quality preschool experience for the children in this area,” adds Asha. Asha and her Director have completed training at Goddard’s corporate headquarters in Pennsylvania and are currently enrolling children in the new school. They are hiring teachers who can’t wait to start preparing their classrooms which will be arranged in learning centers of math, music, creative art, blocks and puzzles, science and computers. The new school boasts two separate playgrounds for children of all ages.

Gleannloch Resident

Rocky

Anderson.

For more than twenty-three years, Rocky Anderson chased drug smugglers and terrorists across a dozen different countries, flying a wide variety of government airplanes and helicopters for the world's largest law enforcement air force. For his entire career as a pilot, he kept a logbook of all his flights, making notes if anything out of the ordinary happened-and it often did. Maximum Risk is a true account of some of his most exciting adventures, working some of the United States' biggest drug cases, protecting the president of the United States, and going undercover against major drug lords. Rocky has flown airplanes and helicopters on missions covering the United States, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. He has gone undercover in some of the biggest cases for US Customs and has been involved in all their largest operations in the last two decades. He has flown airspace security missions over the Washington, DC, area and for presidential security details. Rocky has assisted in hundreds of felony arrests, the seizure of more than two hundred thousand pounds of marijuana and cocaine, and millions of dollars of drug money. Maximum Risk is a heart-pounding memoir that recounts the incredible true adventures of a Homeland Security pilot. In the last eighteen months since retiring from Homeland Security Rocky has flown sixty-one combat missions as a contract pilot flying US Army "spy planes" in Iraq and Afghanistan. He currently is flying surveillance missions on the Arizona- Mexico border in support of US Border Patrol. The book is available on Amazon, Auto Care on Spring Cypress and the Koening Dance School also.

Gleannloch Resident

Carla Hoch.

When asked why she decided to write the book Breaking Reed, Gleannfield resident, Carla Hoch replied, “It was a desperate attempt to get the Wiggles theme song out of my head!” Nearly three years later, what began as the stay-athome mother’s means of mental stimulation, was a completed novel. The story surrounds a young Irish doctor whose careless actions leave him with blood on his hands. When no jury would convict him, he sentences himself to a sentence of self loathing that takes the form of self indulgence. When his immoral lifestyle drives him to near madness, he moves to the United States in an effort to begin again. His plans are undone however by his own lack of self control. Instead of freeing himself of guilt, he finds himself caught in a web of old desires that stretches from the gates of heaven to the depths of hell and leaves him dangling over a decision that could cost him not only his mortal body, but eternal soul. Within a month of it’s mid-February release, Breaking Reed was ranked among the top 5% of Kindle books sold and has a five star rating on Amazon.com. It has been the selection of three book clubs, was featured in the March 10 print edition of the New York Times Sunday Book Review and is slated to be in the July edition of the New York Review of Books. Not only is the inside of the book a Gleannloch work, but the outside is as well! The cover art is by Gleannloch resident, Max Stenger, who lives in "The Woods" to whom the book is dedicated. To learn more about Breaking Reed, please visit the website: www.carlahoch.com To purchase the book locally please visit The Book Worm or The Book Attic in Tomball, the Champions Barnes & Noble, Armazon or check is out at the Barbara Bush Library. Belt Sander Races by: Carla Hoch

While most people travel to New Braunfels to float the Guadalupe river or go to Schlitterbahn, there is also a select crowd that goes for a very different reason: a little sport known filled with speed, the whir of electricity and danger - for anyone stupid enough to get too close! While on a recent trip to visit my parents in beautiful New Braunfels, my father informed me that I had just missed the “Big Race”. Now, my Dad is 71 so I figured he was not exactly on the cutting edge of what was happening in the area but I had to ask. “Ok. What big race?” He responded, rather nonchalantly, “Oh, the belt sander racing at the Happy Cow Bar and Grill here in town.” Still not quite understanding what he was talking about (would you?), I asked him to explain. “Well,” he said with a sigh, “they take a belt sander and drag race it on a specially built track. They even dress up the belt sanders and give them names.”

22

GLF-Style Magazine • Aug - Sept

I love my dad and respect him far too much to tell him that he is full of it but this was ridiculous. However, this is also Texas! So, figuring there was nothing to lose, I asked him to take me out to the Happy Cow bar, also know as “The Udder Place” (of course it is), located right on the edge of New Braunfels in Hunter, Texas. I arrived at the bar and had to laugh. It was out in the country surrounded by gorgeous oaks. If there was such a thing as belt sander racing, this would be the venue for certain. The100 foot track, built by Jeff Williams, was outside. I looked it over as the owner of the bar explained that the belt sanders are placed in parallel wooden channels and fitted with long extension cords. Each race heat begins when a common switch or individual switches are triggered by the racers. (I was kind of hoping he would say squirrel jockeys started them up.) The small motors are revved and the sanders race to the end of the track in a glorious plume of saw dust. I know what you’re thinking. This is something a local, recession cursed, out of work husband created in between job hunts! Nope. Turns out it’s actually a “thing”. There is an organization called the BSRA the (Belt Sander Racing Association) and they hold national events in Las Vegas. Google “belt sander races” you’ll find quite a few YouTube videos. So, before you toss out that old belt sander, look at it for the racing wonder that it could be! Polish it, add a few flames and if you think you got what it takes, you bring that baby over to the Happy Cow and enter the Big Race. It’s something everyone ought to see and for goodness sake, if there are t-shirts, buy one! And if there are any actual BRSA members reading this, my hats off to you and your ingenuity! I do have one suggestion, however. Two words: squirrel jockeys!

Keeping Cool

by: Carla Hoch

During the month of August when most people are trying not to spontaneously combust, Isabelle Colf and Paige Schurman are donning mittens to keep warm. Why? Because as the mercury outside is rising, these Gleannloch ladies are hard at practice on the ice at the Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex. Paige, who began skating at the young age of 4 and Isabelle, who began at 8, both said they were inspired by watching local skate shows as well as the Olympics. The inspiration runs deep enough to get the two up at hours the rest of us seldom see. Isabelle wakes up at 4:45 a.m. so that she can practice before heading off to Klein Oak. And Paige, although home schooled, still rises with the chickens to practice as well. The girls’ schedule is paying off too. Their team earned the 2011 World Junior pewter medal and became the 2011 National Junior Champions. Keep up the hard work ladies! We may be sleeping while you are sweating icicles but we are dreaming of one day seeing you in the Olympics.

Gleannloch's Biggest Dog by: Carla Hoch

If you are a resident of the Paddock and are out walking in the gorgeous Texas twilight, you may hear someone say: “Good glory , Myrtle! That man’s walking a donkey!” That assumption is wrong, but from a distance, an easy mistake. It’s Thunder: Gleannlochs’ own Hound of the Baskervilles, and four-legged child of Clark and Judy Meikle. If you have never seen an Irish Wolfhound they are gargantuan! It’s the tallest of all dog breeds and was originally bred to keep the wolf population of the British Isles at bay (pun intended). They were good at it too! So good, by the mid 1700’s they had about knocked out the entire wolf population. They were soon seen as unnecessary burdens and were themselves left to near extinction. Thankfully, a military captain saw the beauty within the beast and groomed the hound into the quiet, gentle giant it is today. (I wouldn’t want to test that by the way.) Thunder, like all things in Texas, is bigger than average. Twice as big in fact. He weighs in at a whopping 230

pounds which is more than both A&M’s and UT’s starting QBs! (Throws better too – oh... it’s a joke! Calm down!) He is over 7 feet if he is standing on his hind legs. What does it take to care for a sweetie like Thunder? Lots of love, 200 pounds of chicken, over 1000 cups of dry dog food and a paltry 127 cups of wet food each year! But again, he isn’t the average Wolfhound. The male of the breed generally weighs in at a measly 170 pounds, so only a hundred pounds of chicken needed. Is a Wolfhound for you? Well they require vaccinations like all dogs. However, the average American dog is about 40 pounds so the average Wolfhound will need four times the food and room! You also have to consider they can stand on their hind legs and reach the top of your refrigerator, knock out a ceiling fan with a small leap and if they lie down on your lap to take a nap, you will be there until they decide to wake up! You also need a backhoe to clean up after them in the yard if you know what I mean! But, the responsibility needed to own them is directly proportional to the love they give. They are easy-going, faithful and loving companions, and those fuzzy brows over those little eyes will melt your heart! So, the next time you are out in the near dark hours and spot a man walking a donkey on a leash, along Laxey Glen, don’t call the constable. It’s just Thunder. Smile and calmly wave, and if you are blessed enough to meet the dog in the hairy flesh, I highly suggest not darting away and howling like a wolf.
