Final President’s Letter DECEMBER 2011 Greetings Everyone, I can’t believe that my 2 years as Chamber President has come to an end already. It seems as though I was just sworn in at the installation luncheon. I sincerely want to thank all of the Chamber members who really made my job extremely easy. Anytime I asked for volunteers they would appear. I would ask for ideas and get them. Anyone who took on a task did a great job and did not complain. I think our Chamber is unique in the sense that we really do want all of our members to succeed and we are all willing to help each other in that quest. As we go to our various events during the year, one can tell that we all really do like each other and are glad we are in the Chamber together. That may sound like a no brainer, but I have been in many professional associations in my career and I have never been around a group that sincerely wants what is best for Glen Ellyn and for the Chamber members. I can’t say enough about what Mike and Georgia do for the Chamber. They work many hours in sometimes difficult situations and never complain. They just get the job done. Special thanks to Renee. She is the lucky one who fixes all of my punctuation and grammar for these letters. They look and sound good because of her. Allison handles our accounting needs. It is no easy task. Thank you for your help during my 2 years. I think we have a great board going forward in 2012 with Paul Sivak as our President. There are some familiar faces and some new faces on the Board. We have some new events in the pipeline as well as our regular annual ones. I feel that 2012 is going to be a very successful one for the Chamber. As we go forward, please try and recruit just one new member. If we all did that, imagine where our membership numbers would be. Strength is in numbers. Let’s make a concerted effort to increase our membership for the New Year and keep the Chamber vibrant and strong. Thanks again to all of you for all of your support and trust in me. You have made the last 2 years some of the most rewarding in my life. I will see you all in 2012. Get out and volunteer. Help each other’s businesses and above all, HAVE FUN!

Hello Everyone! Goodbye to 2011 and hello 2012! Let’s welcome in the New Year with lots of optimism and joy! Thanks to Rob Kelley of COUNTRY® Financial and the 2011 Board of Directors for guiding us through another year of challenges due to the economy. But, 2011 also brought us great weather in May and our most successful Taste ever. We are looking to have a few new events for the 2012 year. Early March brings us our Fine Arts show that will be held at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center. We need a few good Artists. Please see the Chamber web site for details. Later in the year we will be providing the community with a Halloween Haunted House to complement the very successful Zombie Crawl from 2011. (Thank you Lisa and Shane Duncan—Arbonne and Monkey Wrench Studio respectively) An old, but new event will be back for November, 2012, and that is the Glen Ellyn Chamber Fashion show. Business After Hours will continue to be on the agenda with some new companies participating this year! Please watch for additional notices on the web page and at luncheons for volunteer sign up and committee participation. With all of your help we will have a most successful 2012. Remember, when needing products and services, please keep all Chamber members in mind! Happy New Year!!!

YearEndEvents HOLIDAY WALK On the day after Thanksgiving, downtown Glen Ellyn was once again filled with residents and visitors to watch Santa light the Christmas tree. Escorted down Main Street by members of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Dept, Santa arrived right on time and magically lit the Christmas tree at Main Street and Crescent Blvd. Afterwards, the downtown shops were open to showcase their holiday merchandise and to welcome visitors with cookies and hot drinks. Paul’s Shoe Service was open late to celebrate their 60 year business anniversary. The Glen Ellyn Chamber hosted an open house at 515 Crescent Blvd. The Glenbard South Madrigal Singers, the Elite Feet Dance Studio and the a cappella VoiceMale group from Glenbard West entertained visitors. Panera Bread brought chocolate chip cookies, hot cocoa and coffee and Dominick’s sent plates of cookies for all to enjoy. The Chamber also provided hot cider and candy canes to round out the treats. Our thanks to Pam Horsley Solem, for giving us the use of 515 Crescent Blvd. for our Open House.

The kitcHen studio of glen ellyn earns coveted angie’s list super service award Award reflects businesses’ consistently high level of customer service The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn has been awarded the prestigious 2011 Angie’s List Super Service Award, an honor bestowed annually on approximately 5 percent of all the businesses rated on the nation’s leading provider of consumer reviews. “This is our third Angie’s List Super Service Award. Client referrals are extremely important to our business and are what has kept our business strong all through a weakened economy,” commented Susan Klimala, designer and coowner of The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn. “The fact that our clients have taken time out of their busy schedules to share their positive experience working with The Kitchen Studio means the world to us.”
Doug Herwaldt of Paul’s Shoe Service celebrated their 60th business anniversary in 2011. Doug’s grandfather David, and then his son, Paul, began the Herwaldt shoe business. In 1979, Doug Herwaldt and his wife Mary became the owners. The Herwaldts also have a second location in Lisle. Though the economy has been tough for businesses, Doug said this year is the busiest that he has seen. Customers are coming in for repairs, hoping to make their footwear last a long time. In addition to shoe repair, Paul’s Shoe Service also repairs purses, luggage, and most leather items. Doug also offers used ice skates and sharpens knives, lawnmower blades and lawn tools. The Herwaldt family business has been a fixture in Glen Ellyn for 60 years. In addition, Doug and his family are an integral part of the Village through their volunteerism in the Village. We wish them many more prosperous years.
“Only a fraction of the businesses rated on Angie’s List can claim the sterling service record of being a Super Service Award winner because we set a high bar,” said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks. “The fact that The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn can claim Super Service Award status speaks volumes about its dedication to consumers.”
