Menshed focuses on men's health

Funerals from $1670.00

The Glasshouse Country Menshed is upping the focus on men's health. Since December of last year the partnership between the Menshed and the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group has increased. The bi-monthly support group gathering was rescheduled from Wednesday evenings to Wednesday mornings at the shed as the venue. At these men's health forums, high quality professional speakers address a regular group of fifty men and some of their partners who also join the men. The shed this year has run a first response first aid course with ten of the shedders participating. Col Brighton, a qualified first aid trainer, Prostate Cancer Foundation Ambassador and now an honorary shedder, facilitated this training. At the conclusion of the course the shed was presented with a defibrillator, which is now kept in a quick access enclosure for any emergency. At the recent Beerwah Street Party the men presented a great display of the work and service the shedders provide. You may think the Menshed is not your cup of tea and say: "I have my own shed in the back yard. If you have not checked out the Menshed, you can come along to 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah (Glasshouse Country Care) from 8am to noon each Wednesday morning and join the men for a cuppa and a yarn. You will have a good opportunity on Saturday November 18, from 7am to 1pm, to come along to the Shed's Monster Garage Sale. Check out the bargains on offer and have breakfast or smoko from the Menshed Sausage Sizzle and enjoy a yarn with the men. For more information come along and check the shed out, or for more information call James on 0400 815 419. (back) John, Bob, Ron, Phil (front) Sandy and Col Brighton.

Dentures that Make You Smile 34

From July this year, Denture Care Maleny has offered locals a full range of removable prosthodontics services, right here in the Hinterland. Everything from a simple repair to your existing dentures, to state of the art Valplast and cobalt chrome dentures. At the moment, patients have to travel to the Sunshine Coast to access quality prosthodontic services. This can be a daunting prospect, especially if you find travelling hard. When you consider that achieving quality outcomes often involves multiple visits, it really can be outside some patients’ physical abilities and budgets. With Aaron from Denture Care Caloundra now working from Banksia House Dental Surgery in Maleny two days a week, all these logistical problems fade away. Aaron is a fully qualified dental prosthetist with over 12 years’ experience in the dental industry and a strong dental background with his father David being a well respected dental technician on the Sunshine Coast for over 37 years. Aaron treats each patient with the same level of enthusiasm and respect in order to create them the most comfortable and pleasing set of dentures that they have ever worn. Denture Care Maleny offers a free initial consultation and a 10% discount for seniors. They are registered to claim on your Private Health Insurance through HICAPS and also happily treat Veterans Affairs Gold Card holders. Call now for a no obligation free consultation. Merryatric players have ‘Gone Bush’

This fun-filled play is The Merryatric Players fifth performance held at The Events Centre and is sure to be just as successful as their past concerts. Fun, friendship and fellowship

By Sonia Clark The Combined Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club is a great way for local retirees to meet others and enjoy fun, friendship and fellowship. The not for profit offshoot of Rotary offers members a chance to be involved in an interesting and socially active club with meetings, outings, barbeques and more. Currently the club has around 47 members with monthly meetings attracting between 35-40 attendees. The meetings are both informative and fun with a general meeting followed by morning tea and then a guest speaker. Members then stay on for a bit of a catch up and finger food lunch in the hall. A huge variety of topics are covered by the monthly guest speakers. Past talks have ranged from natural beekeeping to stories from an adventuring sea captain, to health topics and retirement focused information. Held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the library), the meetings run from 10am until around 1pm. The Combined Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club includes Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough, with the bulk of members coming from these areas – however anyone from the surrounding areas is welcome to attend. Maree Butts is the current publicity officer and she is great point of contact if you are thinking of joining.

“We often have barbeques at Turner Park or Ewen Maddock Dam, and the club also has a number of ‘sub-clubs’ such as a reading group, music club and chat morning club,” Maree said. “We’d love to welcome more members and the club really is a lovely way to meet other local people of a retirement age.” Each month the club organises an outing and, since the club started in 2001, members have travelled to points of interest, exhibitions, galleries, temples, historical houses and even jails and castles! If you’d like to find out more, please call Maree on 5494 0332 or 0408 287 114.

Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law, formerly King Tobin Lawyers, are your local solicitors and have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.

Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.

the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.

Estate Administration This is a core part of our practice. We make this process as easy as is possible in your circumstances and tailor our service to your needs. Executors of estates are subject to very onerous obligations. We ensure that these obligations are fulfilled and that there are therefore no adverse implications for you. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for us to assist you.

Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to

Do you feel like an old person?

With Gillian, Maleny Travel When you reached a certain age, did you feel that sometimes, you were invisible? Now that you have reached that certain age, do you feel like an old person? I’ll bet you’re starting to feel indignant, especially, if you are an active and enquiring person. Which is bringing me to other questions – would you still like to travel? Do you have a ‘wish I had’ or a travel bucket list? Sure we may be pushing a few buttons here, but I genuinely want to let you know you are now a new wave traveller! You are also part of the growing numbers of baby boomers and beyond, finding themselves widowed, divorced, solo and/or with a partner who does not wish to or, cannot travel... Good news - times are a’ changing, and there are now many small group tours designed specifically for your situation. In particular we have a small group tour to Japan, departing on March 24. If you would like to find out more, join us for an exclusive presentation by tour leader, Jan Hutton, on Tuesday November 21 at 5.30pm at the Maleny Cruise and Travel office, 39 Maple Street, Maleny, where Japanese finger food and drinks will be provided. Connect with others through volunteering A key risk factor for stress, anxiety and depression is social isolation, and a great way to combat this is through volunteering, which provides you with regular contact with others who are committed to making their community a better place live. It is one of the best ways to make new friends, it strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing you to people and organisations with common interests, neighbourhood resources, fun and fulfilling activities. While some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy and have a hard time meeting new people. Volunteering increases your self confidence and can provide a healthy boost to your self-esteem and life satisfaction. Studies have found that people who volunteer have a lower mortality rate and show less symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease. The better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals. While it might be a challenge to coordinate everyone’s schedules, volunteering as a team has many worthwhile benefits. Giving back to the community together, you make a connection through shared experiences and understand just how good it feels to help others in need. If you are considering a career change, or returning to the workforce volunteering can help

you get the experience and/or training required in the field of your choice. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning, task management, and organisation. You may feel more comfortable stretching your wings at work once you’ve honed these new found skills in a volunteer position. Your volunteer work might also expose you to professional organisations that could be of benefit to your career. Volunteering helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills. It is also a fun and easy way to explore your interests and passions with renewed creativity, motivation and a vision that can carry over into your personal and profssional life. Volunteering Sunshine Coast has over 140 non-for-profit organisations as members, who are constantly seeking people for a variety of volunteer positions right across the Sunshine Coast. They can match your skills and interests to a suitable position within your local area and if you are seeking to further your skills and experience they also offer you training and guidance in a field of your choice. If you would like to find out more contact Volunteering Sunshine Coast, 5443 8256, 0410 437 977 or 0410 437 237.
