LOCALS can now get their clearest look yet at how the massive Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade will reshape the Glass House Mountains corridor, with detailed designs and a new flyover video released as construction ramps up on the billion-dollar project.

The release follows months of community concern over widespread tree clearing, property impacts and major changes along the rail corridor as work intensifies between Beerburrum and Beerwah.

The updated designs show how the duplicated rail line, new overpasses and realigned roads will

look once completed, giving residents a clearer picture of one of the biggest infrastructure transformations the region has seen in decades.

Construction began late last year and is expected to continue through to late 2027, with passenger services anticipated to begin in early 2028. Full story p5

“About time” is one way of looking at it.

The other is the timing of this “good news” story, which is worth exploring.

It comes just as council prepares to hand down its 2026-27 budget.

(Unfortunately, the timing hasn’t worked in our favour, with the budget documents released after we went to print. Stay tuned.)

We know it’s going to be tough.

Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said as much at a Palmwoods Town Hall meeting last week.

Council has to find $1 billion in savings over the next decade to plug a hole left, inconceivably, by an accounting error.

While ratepayers might shake their heads in disbelief, council has few levers to pull. You’d be safe to assume many of us will be shaking our heads again when the next rates notices arrive.

Whatever lobbying has been

done to secure additional state or federal funding appears to have yielded little.

Unlike some neighbouring councils, Sunshine Coast Council doesn’t do a particularly good job of keeping ratepayers informed about those efforts, making it difficult to judge what has or hasn’t been tried.

That leaves two options: accept significant cost-cutting and pay higher rates at the same time.

It’s not exactly a message that people will embrace.

In the meantime, there’s a touch of “look over here” about projects such as the Maleny Streetscape, a project three years in the making that will ultimately deliver some welcome but belated trees, tables and paving. Nice, certainly.

years, starved, beaten and sent to forced labour in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. He survived the Nagasaki bombing and, after gaining his freedom, helped search for survivors, carried wounded men to safety and assisted in recovering and cremating the dead.

Understandably scarred by the experience, he then quietly got on with civilian life.

Thanks to the efforts of members of the Glasshouse Country RSL and his family, this remarkable story has finally come to light, and he was posthumously honoured last week.

Show time We were also at the Maleny Show last weekend and have plenty of photos in this week’s paper and on Facebook.

It wouldn’t be a Maleny Show without that familiar soggyunderfoot feeling, but at least the sun was shining. Congratulations to the Show Society for once again bringing together a fantastic event celebrating the agricultural heart of the Mitch hinterland.

By Sonia Isaacs A LONG-awaited upgrade of Maleny’s main street will begin next month after Sunshine Coast Council appointed a contractor to deliver the Maple Street Streetscape project without major design cuts or budget overruns.

The overhaul of the town’s commercial heart, jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government, will include wider footpaths, raised pedestrian crossings, improved lighting, landscaping and new community gathering spaces aimed at improving safety and accessibility.

Winston Johnston said the project had achieved a rare outcome for a major council development, with the successful tender coming in within the original budget despite rising construction costs across the sector.

“The cost estimate, or the tender, came in within budget,” Cr Johnston said.

“Almost every other project that the council has had to set tenders on have gone over the budget, so this is a really positive outcome.”

Cr Johnston said the final design remained largely unchanged from plans previously presented to the community, with all pedestrian crossings and footpath upgrades

retained. “There’s been nothing cut out and nothing added,” he said.

Minor adjustments were made following feedback from the Department of Transport and Main Roads and local residents, but the overall vision remained intact.

Kuluin-based contractor Disc Landscapes has been appointed to undertake the works, which are expected to start from June 22 and continue for about six months, weather permitting.

Construction will begin at the lower end of Maple Street near the IGA and will be staged to reduce disruption, particularly during the Christmas trading period.

FRESH concerns have been raised over dangerous climbing incidents across the Glass House Mountains, with calls for stronger public warnings as rescue crews continue responding to a growing number of accidents involving inexperienced hikers.

The renewed safety push follows GC&M News reporting in April which revealed mountain rescues had surged dramatically over the past decade, with emergency responders warning social mediafuelled adventurism was encouraging people to attempt hazardous summit climbs beyond their capabilities.

Glasshouse Mountains Ecolodge owner Chris Pires has now joined calls for greater awareness around the risks of climbing peaks including Mount Tibrogargan and Mount Beerwah, urging hiking platforms and social media influencers to better explain the dangers involved. Mr

Pires said too many visitors were treating the mountains like ordinary walking tracks when the summit routes were steep scrambles requiring hands-on climbing and careful route-finding.

“This isn’t a typical trail – it’s a scramble,” Mr Pires said.

“You’re using your hands and feet all the way up. It’s slippery, and you don’t go in the wet.”

Mr Pires said he was prompted to speak publicly after another serious fall earlier this year near his property, part of a growing number of incidents requiring emergency rescue crews and helicopters.

previously told GC&M News the number of rescues in the Glass House Mountains had escalated from a handful each year to dozens, with 2026 already tracking well above historical averages.

“There’s a bit of Instagram and chasing a gloriouslooking photo at the top of the mountains,” Mr Boyd said.

“I think that feeds into people’s desire to go give it a crack.”

Mr Boyd also warned many first-time climbers were arriving with “little understanding about what they’re going to undertake”, with inexperienced visitors accounting for a significant proportion of rescues.

Mr Pires urged people to add warnings to their “Instagram moments”.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service classifies the summit routes on both Mount Tibrogargan and Mount Beerwah as Grade 5 tracks – its highest difficulty rating – warning they are steep climbs requiring advanced rock scrambling and route-finding skills.

Aura South gets federal green light

The Glassie goes Local A PROPOSED $15 million redevelopment and extensive rebrand are set to transform one of the Glass House region’s oldest community venues, with Club Glass House officially relaunching as Glass House Local.

The new identity was unveiled Wednesday, May 20, as venue operators outlined ambitious plans to expand the long-running club into a modern community and entertainment hub while preserving its local character and history.

Owned and operated by not-for-profit community club organisation CSC Group, the rebrand is aimed at strengthening the venue’s connection to the region while positioning it for future growth.

CSC Group chief executive officer Craig Thomas said the new name reflected both the venue’s heritage and its vision for the future.

“Glass House Local represents far more than a name change - it reflects who we are, who we’ve always been, and where we are heading,” Mr Thomas

said. “We wanted to create a brand that truly captures the character of the region and the people who make this place so special.

“It’s humble, welcoming, connected and full of heart.

Whether you’re a longtime local, visiting the area, or stepping through the doors for the very first time, Glass House Local is a place where everyone belongs.”

Known affectionately as “The Glassie”, the venue has been part of the community for generations, evolving from the historic Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

established in 1936.

Its future was secured earlier this year following its amalgamation with CSC Group after a period of financial uncertainty, ensuring the club remained operational and continued to invest in the local community.

Since joining the group, the venue has already undergone upgrades including furniture replacement and improved carpark lighting.

Further plans are now being developed for a major redevelopment expected

to significantly expand the club’s facilities and services.

Concept plans include expanded dining options, entertainment spaces, a children’s playground and upgraded facilities for the local bowls community.

The redevelopment is also expected to create more than 50 local jobs.

Mr Thomas said Glass House Local would continue supporting local sporting clubs, charities and community initiatives, including the longstanding Morris House Christmas Toy Drive.

A MAJOR new housing expansion on the Sunshine Coast has cleared a key hurdle after Stockland’s proposed Aura South community received federal environmental approval, paving the way for up to 12,000 new homes.

The Commonwealth Government approved the project under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 following extensive environmental studies and community consultation.

Stockland General Manager David Laner said the approval balanced environmental protection with the region’s urgent housing needs. “We welcome the approval, which follows substantial environmental studies and conversations with the community that have helped shape Aura South,” Mr Laner said.

More than half of the site will be preserved as green space, while the project is expected to generate almost 23,000 jobs and contribute an estimated $3.4 billion to the economy. Mr Laner said Aura South’s location beside the existing Aura community would support major State Government transport investments, including The Wave heavy rail project and regional road upgrades.

Innovative invasive weed technology INVASIVE weeds, recognised as Australia’s leading cause of biodiversity loss and species extinction, are being targeted through a five-year Sunshine Coast Council project trialling cutting-edge technology and new management techniques.

Funded through the Environment Levy, the Invasive Weeds Project tested innovative approaches at trial sites in Maleny and Witta, including drone mapping, artificial intelligence and environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling to detect and manage weeds across landscapes and waterways.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the project aimed to equip landholders with practical tools to tackle invasive species more effectively.

Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said the project’s findings, resources and four-step weed management guide were now available on Council’s website to support community action.

The first stage of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail (B2N) Upgrade will duplicate the rail line between Beerburrum and Beerwah, removing one of the biggest bottlenecks on the North Coast Line and paving the way for more frequent passenger and freight services.

Main construction began late last year and is expected to continue

through to late 2027, with passenger services anticipated to begin in early 2028 following testing.

Among the biggest changes for the Glass House Mountains area will be the removal of three level crossings and construction of major new overpasses, including a new road bridge linking Barrs Road and Moffatt Road and replacement of the Burgess Street bridge.

The designs also show expanded rail infrastructure, new fencing, noise barriers and revegetation works along sections of the corridor.

Transport and Main Roads said the updated plans reflected feedback gathered during community consultation last year, particularly around noise attenuation, fencing and landscaping.

However, some residents previously voiced frustration over the scale of vegetation clearing and the impact on homes and businesses bordering the rail corridor, with concerns also raised about visual changes and long-term disruption during construction.

State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the release of the flyover

video helped residents better understand the final outcome of the project.

“After what has been a challenging period with significant change for many in the community, being able to see the end result provides important reassurance and peace of mind for locals,” Mr Powell said.

The Australian and Queensland governments have jointly committed more than $1 billion to Stage 1 of the project.

Infrastructure for water, stormwater, roads, sewage, power, and telecommunications all need to be in place.

That’s why the Queensland Government is funding these types of essential infrastructure projects that are ready to start immediately – so more homes can be built sooner.

The $2 billion Residential Activation Fund is part of a range of housing initiatives being delivered across the state, and a key pillar of the Queensland Government’s Securing Our Housing Foundations Plan, unlocking housing supply and ensuring communities have the infrastructure needed to grow.

Alongside the new Residential Activation Fund, the Queensland Government is also: ▶ supporting first home buyers by removing stamp duty on new builds,

helping 2204 Queenslanders since May 2025. Eligible buyers save $9096 on a median-priced house and land package in Queensland. ▶ extending the $30,000 first home owner grant to 30 June 2026 – which

has already helped 2629 people this financial year. ▶ delivering a nation-leading Boost to Buy shared equity scheme to help

reduce the deposit gap, already helping 150 Queenslanders get into their first home. Round two is now open. ▶ increasing rental availability by lifting subletting restrictions. ▶ delivering one million homes, including 53,500 social and community

homes by 2044.

Delivering critical infrastructure is driving housing supply and easing housing pressure, with land unlocked for more than 98,000 new homes for Queenslanders.

Round one of the fund is already supporting 98 projects across the state.

With $500 million available in round two, and fifty percent of those allocated to regional Queensland, more Queenslanders will have a place to call home sooner.

Queensland Property Council Executive Director Jess Caire said the funding had been warmly received by industry.

“The Property Council advocated strongly for this funding due to the obvious feasibility gaps for new housing that were clearly precipitated by a lack of sufficient infrastructure,” she said.

“The Residential Activation Fund goes to the heart of this issue, and we congratulate the Government for announcing and enacting it so quickly.”

To ensure these projects deliver results quickly, they need to be ready to start within 12 months of the project being announced and completed within three years.

Local Government Association of Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Alison Smith said the initiative is delivering game-changing infrastructure that will see thousands of new homes built right across the state.

Social and Affordable Housing at the heart of Queensland’s long-term plan T wo periods of homelessness and a stint in emergency housing would shake any family. For Amy and Floyd, they’ve found what every parent wants for their kids – a safe, secure, and affordable place to call home.

The journey wasn’t easy for this Wide Bay family of seven. With five children aged between four and 20 years, including three with ADHD and intellectual disabilities, Amy and Floyd faced significant challenges in finding stable housing. But with the support of the RentConnect team at the Bundaberg Housing Service Centre, they were able to turn their situation around and secure a Helping Hand Headlease on a suburban 4-bedroom home.

Amy says life is much easier now. “Before, we were living day-to-day,” she said.

With a $5.6 billion pipeline for additional social and community housing and $500 million in annual funding locked in from 2029–30, the Queensland Government is committed to creating 53,500 social and community homes by 2044.

“Through the Queensland Community Housing Investment Pipeline and the Community Housing Futures Program, providers are growing portfolios and delivering affordable homes faster,” she said.

This investment is about more than building houses – it’s about giving Queenslanders like Amy and Floyd stability and opportunities.

The Government is also supporting Community Housing Providers through the $4 million Community Housing Futures Program, which helps them build their capacity and grow to deliver more social and community housing.

Community Housing Industry Association Queensland CEO Julie Saunders said

“We had been living with our in-laws on the Gold Coast along with our twoyear-old and four-year-old to try to save as much as we can.

The Queensland Government’s A Place to Call Home initiatives are about more than bricks and mortar – it’s about creating opportunities, fostering independence, and helping every Queenslander thrive in a home they can call their own.

First-time home buyer Mitchell Stanger said the Government equity scheme turned something that felt like years away into a reality for their young family.

“With the Government’s equity contribution, we were able to buy and have payments we can manage and ultimately have the security of knowing we have a place to call home.

“I’m so proud of myself and my wife and my family that we were able to achieve this goal in a short amount of time thanks to the Boost to Buy scheme.”

The Stangers’ story highlights the Government’s commitment to unlocking more homes and supporting first home buyers.

Three months since its launch, more than 150 buyers now have the keys to their first home through the scheme.

Round two applications for the scheme are now open, with an additional 500 placements available, and half reserved for regional Queensland.

The Boost to Buy scheme provides a government equity contribution of up to 30 per cent for new homes and 25 per cent for existing homes, and to be eligible, home buyers need to have saved a minimum of two per cent deposit for the purchase price of a property up to $1 million.

The Queensland Government has committed $330 million for up to 2000 places in the scheme over three years.

Transport costs drives spending fall HOUSEHOLD spending fell 1.1 per cent in April 2026, according to seasonally adjusted figures released last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Tom Lay, ABS head of business statistics, said: ‘The 4.7 per cent drop in transport costs was the main driver for the 1.1 per cent fall in household spending in April.

‘Annual household spending was up 4.9 per cent compared to April 2025, slowing from the 6.2 per cent annual rise in March.’

The fall in transport spending reflected widespread impacts and responses to the conflict in the Middle East. Air transport was the largest contributor to the decline, as households scaled back travel in response to broader uncertainties and higher airfares.

Higher jet fuel costs also added to the fall in transport spending, as airlines cancelled routes during the month to keep services viable.

The resulting refunds are recorded as a reduction in Air Transport.

Fuel spending remained elevated compared to before the Middle East conflict but eased in comparison to March.

Nagasaki POW recognised after 80 years

By Sonia Isaacs MORE than 80 years after surviving brutal Japanese prisoner-of-war camps and the devastation of Nagasaki, former Dutch soldier Alois (Wies) Felix Ferdinand Amrein was formally honoured at the Glasshouse Country RSL on Tuesday, May 26, with two posthumous medals recognising his wartime courage, sacrifice and survival.

The medals were presented by the Dutch Defence Attaché to Australia and New Zealand, Colonel Gerbe Verhaaf, who travelled from Canberra for the ceremony attended by family, friends and community members.

Accepted on behalf of the late soldier by his 90-yearold son Alfred Amrein of Beerwah and daughter Meike Amrein, who travelled from the Netherlands especially for the occasion, the honours recognised a remarkable story of endurance, spanning World War II imprisonment, forced

labour and survival near Nagasaki during the atomic bombing in August 1945.

Colonel Verhaaf described the awards as a longoverdue acknowledgement from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“These medals are a formal recognition... that Alois Felix Ferdinand Amrein’s courage, service and suffering during the Second World War will never be forgotten,” he said.

“It is important to keep personal stories alive, not only the great events of history, but the individual lives behind them.

“The story of Wies Amrein is one of duty, endurance and survival.”

Born in 1910 on the west coast of Sumatra in the former Dutch East Indies, Wies Amrein was known as a talented soccer player and respected technical educator before war engulfed the region.

Although he held Swiss citizenship through his father and was under no obligation to enlist, he volunteered to serve as a sergeant in the Dutch colonial forces following the Japanese invasion in 1942.

Captured soon afterwards, Wies Amrein disappeared from family life for years.

In 1943 he was transported through Singapore to Japan, where he was imprisoned at Fukuoka Camp 14 near Nagasaki and subjected to brutal forced labour.

Prisoners were routinely starved, beaten and worked to exhaustion, with many never surviving captivity.

Amrein remained in the Nagasaki region in August 1945 when the atomic bomb known as “Fat Man” was dropped on the city.

he joined fellow prisoners searching for survivors, carrying wounded men to safety in nearby caves and assisting with the recovery and cremation of the dead.

The ordeal left deep physical and psychological scars that family members said he rarely discussed.

On September 11, 1945, rescue ships finally arrived in Nagasaki Harbour. Amrein was evacuated aboard the American aircraft carrier USS Chenango to Okinawa before later being transferred to Manila for rehabilitation.

He eventually reunited with his family in Bandung, but political upheaval and the Indonesian independence struggle forced the family to leave in 1953 and resettle in the Netherlands.

There, Amrein helped establish a company

manufacturing lightweight electrical generators for NATO before later returning to teaching at a technical institute in Eindhoven.

Colonel Verhaaf said Amrein’s life embodied resilience, sacrifice and quiet service.

“Mr Amrein volunteered to serve when he did not have to, endured years as a prisoner of war, and rebuilt his life after the conflict,” he said.

“His legacy lives on in his family and in the freedom and peace we enjoy today.

For eldest son, Alfred Amrein, the ceremony marked both pride and closure.

Recalling his father’s return home after four years away at war, he told guests he had been about 10 years old when a friend informed him his father had arrived home. Alfred said his

father rarely spoke about the horrors he endured during the war, making Tuesday’s presentation a deeply meaningful public acknowledgement for the family more than eight decades later.

Meike Amrein thanked representatives of the Dutch Embassy and paid special tribute to researcher Maureen Hoyer, whose work uncovering her father’s wartime records and preparing the medal application helped secure the recognition.

Without those efforts, she said, the family would not have been standing together like this more than 80 years after the war ended.

She also acknowledged the assistance of Alfred’s wife Willie Summers, who helped organise the ceremony at the Glasshouse Country RSL.

The founder of the Maleny Singers and one of the Sunshine Coast hinterland’s most respected musical figures will direct Patience at the Maleny Community Centre this June, supported by the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra.

The Australia Day honour recognised Ms Taylor’s decades of service to community music and the arts - a contribution spanning international opera stages and generations of performers in the hinterland.

Have your say on Aura Central RESIDENTS are being asked to have their say on plans to create a new locality named Aura Central as part of proposed boundary changes to Bells Creek. The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development has opened public consultation on the proposal, which would formally recognise the rapidly growing central business district within the Caloundra South Priority Development Area, widely known as Aura.

Under the plan, part of

the existing Bells Creek locality would be renamed Aura Central to better reflect the area’s urban identity and support future planning, addressing and service delivery as development continues.

Department officials said accurate place names and clearly defined locality boundaries were essential for building safe and resilient communities, helping emergency services, postal operators and government agencies respond efficiently.

The proposed change is also aimed at improving

clarity for residents, businesses and visitors navigating one of Queensland’s largest urban growth areas. Consultation will remain open until June 26, with community members encouraged to lodge submissions through the department’s online consultation portal.

National not-for-profit Wellways Carer Gateway provides free support tailored for unpaid carers and their needs so they don’t have to do it all on their own.

Through services like counselling, in-person peer support, vocational coaching, facilitated coaching, emergency respite and carer hubs, Carer Gateway provides free support to those who

Study of “baby brain” reveals that new parents are as astute as non-parents

Dr Perrykkad said the findings showed no objective evidence for so-called “baby brain” effects. “So why do new parents, especially new mothers, commonly report experiences of baby brain?”

Dr Perrykkad said.

“It is important not to dismiss what new parents are telling us. When we do find evidence for baby brain, it is more related to sleep and wellbeing than a true objective decline in

cognition.” Researchers said factors such as sleep deprivation, stress and emotional adjustment during the early parenting years were more likely to influence how new parents perceived their memory and concentration. She said the findings reinforced the importance of supporting parents during the transition into parenthood.

“New parents can take solace in the fact that becoming a new parent doesn’t inherently impair their memory and cognition,” she said.

NEW parents can breathe easier after the largest study into “baby brain” found no evidence that having a child causes long-term declines in memory or cognition.

Researchers from Monash University examined 150 birth-giving mothers and 150 non-birth-giving

fathers within two years of welcoming a baby, comparing their cognitive performance with nonparent control groups.

Published in the journal Cortex, the study found both mothers and fathers performed similarly to non-parents across a broad

range of cognitive tests, challenging the long-held belief that becoming a parent inherently impairs memory or thinking ability.

The research was led by Navyaan Siddiqui and Dr Kelsey Perrykkad from the Cognitive Neuroimaging Lab at the Turner Institute

Lost in translation Why human expertise is still important in the age of AI

FluMist vaccine free for kids QUEENSLAND children and teenagers who are uncomfortable with needles will now have broader access to the free FluMist nasal spray vaccine under an expansion of the State Government’s flu vaccination program.

The Crisafulli Government recently announced the eligibility expansion, allowing children and teenagers aged six years to under 18 years who struggle with needle vaccination to receive the needle-free flu vaccine.

The move is backed by the government’s $31 million free flu vaccination program, available through participating GPs, pharmacies and vaccination clinics across Queensland.

More than one million Queenslanders have already received a flu vaccination this year, with strong uptake

among young children.

As of May 18, 39,630 children aged six months to five years had been vaccinated against influenza 9,530 more than at the same time last year.

Of the 29,140 vaccinated children aged two to five, more than 20,000 received the FluMist nasal spray.

The expansion follows feedback from clinicians and families, including parents of children with disability or sensory sensitivities, who said the nasal spray option made vaccination less stressful and more accessible.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Marianne Gale urged families to book vaccinations before peak flu season, warning FluMist supplies across Australia are expected to expire by early August due to the vaccine’s shorter shelf life.

As AI-powered translation tools become increasingly embedded across workplaces and online platforms, specialists in interpreting and translation say there is growing misunderstanding about what interpreters actually do, particularly in highpressure settings such as courts, hospitals and police interviews. “People keep asking what the future holds,” says Professor Ludmila Stern, an expert in translation from UNSW’s School of Humanities & Languages. “There is a lot of concern about AI, but I don’t believe the profession will disappear. What we need to be careful about is how these technologies are used.”

RE: Alana Rain’s letter ‘Withhold from climb’, GC&MN 19th May. Rather than enter into an Aboriginal vs White settler debate involving the Glass House Mountains, surely common sense should follow that you don’t climb a mountain on a rainy day, you don’t begin the lengthy climb at 3pm and you don’t climb in joggers or without basic emergency supplies.

To ensure the safety of the folks that lack the knowledge and experience of knowing when to climb and the safety of the emergency services involved in rescues from these mountains, surely simply banning all mountain climbing within the Glass House Mountains area would be a sensible and logical solution.

WE are constantly being warned to look out for scams on our phone and emails but we forget the people we invite into our homes to do work can also be scammers.

I arranged to have my fabric Lounge cleaned by a local business. A time and date was arranged and the man arrived with his machine - now for an extra cost he would do a “deepclean” - we decided that would be a good idea and he offered a discount for cash. Should I be smelling a rat??

Anyway after about 1/2hr with my tiled floor covered in water he packed up his machine and told me to wait 8hrs before using the lounge. I did mention to him at the time that I wasn’t very happy with the job. He said I would need to wait until it dried. Well when it eventually dried it revealed a very shabby job.

Recently I heard the LNP - Mr Powell, Ms Hatcher, Ms Doolan, Mr Bleijie - saying that Federal Labor must give more financial assistance to the cattle industry for the losses. The LNP is calling for more tax payers’ money to pay for present damage by climate change, and at the same time abandoning wind farms because they are Labor’s ‘reckless rush to renewables’. This is the LNP and Coalition which preferenced Pauline Hansen who says climate change is a hoax. It’s unfathomable.

It shows total disregard for businesses and people who will suffer most from climate change.

Planning state THE forced closure of the Beerwah Co-operative in its current location clearly shows the abysmal state of planning for major infrastructure projects, not

The Wave project has already blown its budget, and has gone through several iterations that have reduced its scope.

In fact, it has been so poorly planned, that the Federal Government has also pulled funding for this white elephant vanity project.

What were they thinking when the proposed car park was to be sited on the North side of the railway line when the majority of its patrons will come from the South side of the line?

In addition, the North side road systems have been designed to service a small regional community and certainly not a horde of commuters, struggling to wend their way through an already crowded shopping centre with limited street access.

Queensland has a remarkably poor record of

delivering megaprojects on time and on budget.

Cross River rail is a prime example.

It is the predictable outcome of a broken system. What we have seen in this project, The Wave, is entirely predictable.

The project was announced without a credible business case. A Grattan Institute report found these types of major projects suffered an average of a 35% cost overrun.

The Beerwah to Caloundra section of the Wave is estimated to cost about $9billion dollars. It is unlikely to cost less than $15billion dollars, which would make the cost of the

entire route somewhere between $25 and $30billion dollars.

There has been no independent scrutiny of this project. It has been developed in a highly politicised appraisal system, and cost versus benefits have not been subjected to rigorous independent scrutiny. The recently cancelled Inland Rail Freight Line is a victim of that lack of independent scrutiny, poor planning and cost overruns.

The whole planning process of the Wave has been less than transparent.

Despite multiple petitions, meetings and community agitation, the Beerwah community have been patted on the head, then studiously ignored, not only by TMR but by the government’s politicians. In addition, the Government has treated the business case as discretionary, and as a result, the people of Beerwah and more broadly, those of the Sunshine Coast, have been left in the dark.

Where is the integrity, the transparency and the independent assessment of this white elephant project that will destroy environment, displace businesses and inconvenience residents? Sadly, we will never probably know, because the whole project has been highly politicised before proper appraisals have been carried out, and planning has been conducted largely in secret.

Elected Reps with Kendall Hatcher State Member Elect for Caloundra Community Spirit Shines Bright at Aura Forum There is an undeniable buzz in the air across Aura right now. As your State Member, nothing fills me with more pride than seeing our community shape its own future, which is exactly what happened at our recent Aura Community Meeting.

The room was packed with passionate, engaged local residents, and the energy was absolutely incredible.

Building a thriving community takes collaboration, and I was thrilled to bring the key decision-makers directly to the AURA Community.

Having representatives from the Sunshine Coast Council, Stockland, and the Queensland Police Service all in the same room was a fantastic opportunity. Together, we addressed the issues that matter most to you, from local infrastructure and

neighborhood safety to upcoming master plans.

During the forum, I was pleased to provide an update from a State Government perspective, highlighting our ongoing commitment to delivering the vital services and facilities this fast-growing region deserves. There is so much exciting development happening across Aura at the moment, with plenty more still to come. However, bricks and mortar are only part of the equation; the real heart of Aura is its people.

I want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who took the time to attend, asked tough questions, and shared their brilliant ideas.

Your feedback is invaluable as I continue to advocate for our electorate in Parliament.

I enjoyed Gertie and Tabitha. I appreciated their simple way of life, passion for their work as mortuary beauticians, and enjoyment of life’s small pleasures; fresh croissants of a morning, ensuring they always look their best, window shopping, and whisky cocktails; their

Finding direction in music SERIOUS about music?

A surprising number of musicians spend years going round in circles without even realising it.

They know where they want to get to - maybe writing better songs, becoming a stronger performer, or simply making music that truly connects.

Some even have a pretty clear idea of where they currently stand. But then something strange happens: they put their head down and start thrashing around without ever stopping to look up and get their bearings.

It’s a bit like trying to cross country while walking through thick fog. You are moving forward and you know you are going somewhere but, you might just be going around in circles…You’re practising scales, recording demos, buying new gear, studying video clips, learning software - all the sort of things your colleagues are doing, yet months down the trail you might start wondering are you actually advancing with all this? If this sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

There are all sorts of clever tools and systems available these days to help

musicians stay organised.

Apps can track practice time, planners can schedule goals, recording software can analyse progress, and social media gives endless ways to measure activity. If you enjoy technology, these things can be genuinely helpful.

But there’s one simple strategy that works for almost everyone. Map out a series of goals that lead toward your long-term vision. Then focus on each goal one at a time and regularly check whether you are actually moving closer to it.

That sounds obvious, but this is exactly where most people go wrong. Thinking, “I’m heading in the right direction,” is not enough.

That can easily become another version of keeping your head down and never looking up.

Meanwhile, little by little, you drift off course - and before long you’re travelling in circles again. A powerful habit is to stop every couple

of weeks and ask yourself one simple question: “Am I genuinely moving closer to my goal?”

Not busier. Not more distracted. Not just more comfortable, but closer.

One of the best ways to stay on track is to find a mentor. Ideally, this is someone who understands your area of music -perhaps somebody who plays your instrument or writes songs if songwriting is your focus.

They don’t need to control your creativity. Their role is to help you keep your direction clear.

If your goal is simply to enjoy music for fun, then none of this really matters. But if you have serious musical ambitions - if you truly want to go somewhere with your music then guidance becomes incredibly valuable.

Find one good mentor and stay with them for at least six months to a year.

Meet regularly, even if it’s only once a month. Share what you’re working on.

Then go away and do the work between sessions.

Most progress in music comes not from thrashing around harder, but from staying pointed in the right direction long enough to actually arrive.

Local talent set to shine at 2026 SC Music Awards Hinterland musos strike a cord as award finalists and performers on the night

By Sonia Isaacs TWO hinterland musicians will take centre stage at this year’s Sunshine Coast Music Awards, with Glass House Mountains’ 8 Ball Aitken and Mooloolah’s Chris Cobb both named finalists and performers for the June 7 celebration of the region’s thriving live music scene.

Hosted by the Sunshine Coast Music Industry Collective (SCMIC), the pair will join a stellar lineup of Sunshine Coast talent at The Shed in Palmview, where the 2026 Sunshine Coast Music Awards will recognise artists, venues and industry figures helping shape the region’s creative identity.

Award-winning roots and blues musician 8 Ball Aitken has been nominated for both Live Act of the Year and Musician of the Year, capping off a huge year that has included two American tours, a major Australian tour and extensive studio session work for other artists.

Aitken said the

recognition reflected not only his own work, but the strength of the Sunshine Coast music community.

“I’m very excited to get to play live there and be nominated for two awards,” he said. “It’s really nice to be acknowledged by the local music industry, and I think everyone’s a winner for being a part of the music scene here on the Coast.”

The veteran performer said creativity remained vital in an increasingly challenging industry. “Being creative is our highest purpose, and you’ve just got to follow your heart with your art,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mooloolah musician Chris Cobb has also earned finalist recognition after nearly four years building his career on the Sunshine Coast music circuit. Cobb, who relocated to the region for its lifestyle and creative culture, said the Coast had become far more than simply a place to live. “I chose the Sunny Coast as my home, my stage, my refuge, and my family,” he said.

Describing the nomination as both humbling and rewarding, Cobb said the honour recognised the hard work of local artists across the region. He said performing on awards night was “the

icing on the cake” and encouraged the community to support the event and celebrate local talent.

Finalists span 11 categories, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Rising Star, Young Artist of

the Year and Live Act of the Year. The awards ceremony will be held at The Shed, Palmview, on Sunday, June 7, with gates opening at 4pm and the main event beginning at 6pm. Tickets via Moshtix.

Internationally celebrated classical guitarist Karin Schaupp and leading Spanish guitarist Andrew Veivers will present a special concert series from June 6-21, showcasing the artistry and expressive power of the Spanish guitar.

The performances mark a long-awaited collaboration between the pair, who first met while

studying music at university under Karin’s mother and mentor, renowned teacher Isolde Schaupp.

Their shared musical history and contrasting yet complementary styles are expected to create a unique and deeply personal performance experience.

Karin Schaupp is regarded as one of the world’s foremost classical guitarists, having performed throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia.

Her recordings with Warner Music International and ABC Classics have received widespread acclaim and inspired composers

to create new works specifically for her.

Andrew Veivers has built a reputation as one of Australia’s leading Spanish guitarists, blending classical and flamenco influences shaped by years of study and performance in London, Madrid and Amsterdam. He has toured internationally with Flamenco Fire and The Saruzu Quartet.

The concert program will feature a carefully curated selection of Spanish guitar works highlighting the warmth, intimacy and virtuosity of the instrument.

When everything is Shaken… New ‘Arts Talks’ series WHEN life is in upheaval and changes are confusing; what we once knew as ‘out ‘is now ‘in ‘and what was ‘in’ is now ‘out’ and not too much seems to make sense anymore – what DO we do?

We all have choices: we can stick our heads in the sand (like the proverbial ostrich) or escape or like an old fella said to me recently, “we need the 60’s back, that’s what we need.”

So, there are many things we could do. However, the repercussions of many of the choices we CAN put in place or the actions we think make sense may end up creating havoc and a greater sense of disorientation. Behind closed doors, when the masks are removed our choices make a huge difference. The old adage- ‘change is not change until it’s change’ rings true.

Firstly, we have to remind ourselves that the new norm of upheaval is not going to remain forever. History proves that contentions and difficulties will come but like 18 year-old Melbourne, Bianca Adler who is attempting to climb Mt Everest this month, acclimatisation is vital if the ascent is to be successful. Mt

Everest can’t grow any taller, but we can become better equipped to conquer it.

Mental health – the focus of your thought life is where everything peaceful and contented starts. A powerful truth is simply knowing that YOU are supposed to control your thoughts, not them control you. Take control each day with a 10minute exercise of gratitude. Yes, we focus too much on what we don’t have instead of what we do have.

Focussing thoughts on a short term goal – weeks or months away builds a clear, positive image about what it would look like to accomplish it, is a positive way to face the Everest in front of you.

2. Feed the brain on good uplifting books every day.

The New Testament, in the Bible, starts with the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – these books turned my life around and still fill me with hope because they

ARTSNATIONAL Sunshine Coast will bring its Arts Talk Series to Caloundra from June, launching an initiative aimed at connecting local audiences with internationally acclaimed art, music and film presentations now.

This initiative, launched in April at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, is led

by Caloundra local Fran Maitland, ArtsNational’s national Australian lecturer coordinator, who thanked Gallery Director Jo Duke and Council brand and engagement lead Stuart Peace.

The launch was attended by representatives of the Friends of the Gallery, CACA, the Caloundra Choral Group and more than 50 residents, alongside the ArtsNational Sunshine Coast committee.

Chair Dawne Clark said the organisation was delighted to present a four-part series of one-hour illustrated talks running monthly from July to October, open to all and designed to encourage community engagement with the arts, friendship and discovery across the region.

It is certainly worth the effort as playing lawn bowls under the stars at this time of year is spectacular especially coming off the full moon.

This triples team game is ideal to form your own team of family members,

friends or work colleagues with no previous experience required. We supply bowls free of charge for new bowlers and visitors are always welcome.

Our next competition will be the Sunshine Coast District Lawn Bowls Pennants where we will be competing against teams from Palmwoods, Pelican Waters, Woombye, Kawana, Maroochy, Moolooloaba and Yandina Bowls Clubs in a home and away format starting Saturday 25 July and running until 5 September followed by the finals. Despite celebrating our 89th birthday this year, Maleny Bowls Club seems not to be widely known within the local community, example being a young lady who was a guest at a recent birthday party held at the club and who grew up and went to school here did not know we existed. A tangle of vines Contributed by Ethan Mimnaugh, Mooloolah Landcare Nursery WE grow them on trellises, or on fences. They wind their way through our gardens. Sometimes they smother the trees,

but sometimes they hold them together. For all kinds of reasons, vines are an extremely interesting type of plant.

Today I’m going to discuss some of the defining features of vines, the different types of vines, and discuss some problematic

exotic vines. Along the way, I’ll list plenty of great native vines as well.

Vines are plants that either trail or climb. There are vines on the beach like Goats Foot (Ipomea pescaprae) or Yellow Beach Pea (Vigna marina). Most of the time, however, we are talking about scandent plants.

Vines can climb in 4 main ways, although there are always exceptions to the rule in nature. One way is through adventitious roots which attach to the surfaces of their support. This is done

by Native Pepper (Piper hederaceum). Another way is by winding around a support. Scrambling Lilly (Geitonoplesium cymosum), a tasty bushtucker, happily twines around even very slender supports.

Vines may also use tendrils, which you might be familiar with from Passionfruit Vines, that grab onto their supports. We also have a Native Passionfruit (Passiflora herbertiana) with similar tendrils. To keep with the edible theme, some thorny vines use their hooks to grip onto their supports like the very tasty, Australian Melon Berry (Maclura cochinchinensis).

Another distinction between vines, is the Liana

vs Herbaceous distinction.

That is to say, the woody vines and the nonwoody vines. Things like Monkey Rope Vine (Parsonsia straminea) or Native Wisteria (Austrocallerya megasperma) grow thick woody stems over time, eventually growing firm in their structure over their support. Other plants like Climbing Guinea Vine (Hibbertia scandens) and Snake Vine (Stephania japonica) have a softer stem which can remain flexible even at full size.

The last thing to consider is the danger that exotic vines bring to our bushland.

Things like Syngonium, and Philodendron are able to totally collapse our native trees, growing far quicker and bigger than our native ecosystems can handle.

By far the worst of them are Cat’s Claw Creeper (Dolichandra unguis-cati) and Madeira Vine (Anredera cordifolia). They are able to destroy our waterways, and smother over 100 year old trees.

These two vines are important to report to council or to a local landcare. There are even programs in South East Queensland which breed beetles that specifically eat these weeds.

Mapleton’s Queen of the Mountain, St Isidores, awaits A landmark Sunshine Coast hinterland estate with more than a century of history has been listed for sale, offering buyers a rare chance to secure one of Mapleton’s most significant private residences.
