e recently received a call from the Vinnies shop at Landsborough to excitedly tell us that they were celebrating being open for 15 years.

And they would be celebrating by holding a two week sale, so could we spread the word. News Editor Kylie popped in to see them and took the lovely front page image we have of just some of their volunteers.

Then last weekend I received a media release advising us that this week is the first National Op Shop Week – I thought to myself “it’s about time!”

Conditions fuelling the fire risk

Residents across Glass House should have a bushfire survival plan or be preparing one, according to Glasshouse Mountains Rural Fire Brigade volunteer community educator Gavin Stewart.

Gavin said with the current fire danger rating bordering between very high and severe, it was important that people were well-prepared in the event of a bushfire.

“Due to the local typography, our block sizes and our close proximity to national parks and forestry, all areas of Glass House are at risk,” Gavin said.

“All these factors create for a high risk area, and residents should be aware and prepared,” he said.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Caloundra acting area director Barry Heilbronn confirmed there is a high fire risk at the moment.

“After a wet summer and the rain in winter, there is a large amount of fuel at the moment, and that is the danger,” Barry said.

“Combined with hot days and dry winds, these sort of conditions make for the most dangerous days.”

Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade first officer Lou Spann said locals could better prepare themselves against risk of bushfires with a few simple steps.

“Make sure your property is clear of combustibles, create at least a 10m mowed buffer around buildings, empty your gutters, keep a list of emergency phone numbers by the phone, and have a bushfire survival plan prepared,” Lou said.

“Just saying it won’t happen here doesn’t mean it won’t, because in 1994 it did, and many residents had to evacuate quickly, and leave possessions behind.”

“There’s more fuel on the ground now than there was in 1994, and all it takes is a few days of north westerly winds to take the fire risk to the highest possible danger,” he said.

On the whole, Lou said rural landholders are generally well prepared when it comes to being bushfire aware, and with current conditions expected to continue over the next two months, it was critical that all residents put plans in place.

Local paralympian arrives home If you’ve ever performed in front of a crowd, you might be able to gauge just a sense of the excitement and anticipation local paralympian Lindsay Sutton felt as he walked into a packed stadium of 80,000 people to compete in his first ever Paralympic Games earlier this month.

It’s fair to say he felt more than a little bit excited, and a whole lot more nervous as he prepared to give his all in his shot put event.

And it seems that was just the right mix of nerves and excitement; as he went on to throw his way into 6th place, bettering his personal goal to finish in the top eight.

Back home in Mt Mellum last week, Lindsay still can’t wipe the smile off his face, recounting his first Paralympic Games as a “totally awesome” experience.

From mixing with fellow paralympians from around the world in the massive dining room, watching other athletic events, being there when his team-mate won gold in the shot put, to sightseeing, Lindsay says he wouldn’t change a thing about his London 2012 experience.

“Everything was really well done, really organised,” Lindsay said.

“The dining room was just massive, about the size of a few football fields, and it was great to be able to go up to an athlete from another country that you saw compete the previous day and ask them about their performance.

“I also really enjoyed being able to watch others compete, but the highlight was definitely when my team mate and room-mate Todd Hodgetts

Lindsay competing at the London Paralympic Games took out the gold in the shot put,” Lindsay said.

“It was pretty cool to be right there alongside him.”

“This was his first Paralympics as well, and he trained so hard, so it was excellent to see him do so well.”

While Lindsay has competed overseas before, it was his first trip to London, and he said he was impressed by what he saw.

“After we finished competing we did a tour of London and checked out the Big Ben and Buckingham Palace and I was really impressed by all the big open areas and parks,” he said.

Lindsay is enjoying a four week break at home with his family before he heads back to Melbourne to resume training, ahead of his next big competition, the world titles in France next year.

But after a taste of London, Lindsay says he has his sights set firmly on Rio in 2016 where he hopes there will be even more events in his class.

In the meantime though, he says he will remain focused on training and preparing for next year’s competition, but not until after a well deserved break. Well done Lindsay, bring on Rio 2016!

Beautiful outcome from U.G.L.Y fundraiser

Local U.G.L.Y (Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You) bartender of the year Mandi Steensen together with the other 176 U.G.L.Y. bartenders across Queensland raised more than $228,000 over six weeks of fundraising throughout the competition period.

GCNews spoke to Mandi’s very proud mum Janelle this week and she said that they believe that Mandi is the youngest U.G.L.Y Bartender in the state, which makes her achievements even that much more outstanding.

After the cockroach races, many raffles, a pie drive, a guess the number bottle caps competition, a kissing booth, car run and U.G.L.Y morning the total raised is $3,680.00.

Mandi would like to say a big thankyou to all of the U.G.L.Y businesses and individuals that had made donations to the wonderful foundation.

“I couldn’t have done it without the generous support of our local community, as well as all of Beerwah Hotels U.G.L.Y staff and patrons.

Thank you,” she said.

The vital funds raised are to support patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Grab a bargain as Vinnies celebrates It’s party time at Vinnies in Landsborough.

The small shop in the heart of Landsborough, which has been the lifeblood of the community for the past 15 years, is having a special half price sale as part of their birthday celebration.

Until October 6, all stock in store is half price, so if you are looking for a bargain, you won’t be disappointed.

According to manager Ardi Baker, who has been working at the shop since it opened, the success of the store is in large part due to the team of volunteers and the support of the local community.

“Our volunteers are a great group of people, some of them have been here with me since we opened 15 years ago,” she said.

Ardi, who has been part of St Vincents de Paul’s for the past 34 years, said the store was opened after she and other locals recognised a need for it.

Since then, it’s become an intrinsic part of the community.

“We have a lot of customers comment on our good prices and the quality of our stock, and our shop is always nice and clean, and that is in most part due to all our volunteers.

“The community is also very supportive, too, with their donations,” she said.

“We never have to call on our other stores; we’ve always got plenty of stock, thanks to all our regular donations.”

“We all take a lot of pride in the shop, and it’s become as much about the friendship as it is about helping out,” Ardi said.

“There’s a real sense of camaraderie amongst us all, and I know I can call on any of them at a moment’s notice to help out.”

One volunteer, Vicky, from Beerwah, said she signed up as a volunteer when the store opened.

“I was living locally at the time and felt that I wanted to give something back to the community,” Vicky said.

“Since then, I’ve made some great friends, and that’s why I keep coming back.”

With minimal overheads and no wages to pay, all the profits from the sale of the stock goes straight back to St Vincent de Paul, Ardi said, which in turn is used to support those in the community less fortunate.

“It’s a great little shop with great staff and lots of regulars, many of whom just come in for a chat, so it serves an important purpose on a number of levels,” she said.

Scouting is an organisation that focuses on the development of young people.

With over 44 million members, Scouts is the largest youth organisation in the world.

The Landsborough Scouts initially started in 1966 and the last five years have seen the group building in numbers.

At present the group offers two age appropriate sections, Cub Scouts (seven and a half -10) and Scouts (10 - 15) open to both boys and girls.

With over 120 acres at the Rocky Creek Scout Camp the Landsborough group has the best scout grounds in Queensland, according to Russell Lindsay, Suncoast Region Commissioner and Scout leader (on loan) for Landsborough.

“Kids join Scouts to learn outdoor skills, teamwork and life skills,” Russell said.

“It also provides social skills, mentoring and good role models with the aim of Scouting to produce better citizens.”

The Cub Scouts program is based on investigation, handcrafts, games and having fun and the Scouts are all about learning by doing.

With that in mind, the Landsborough Group will be presenting fun simple yet practical activities as part of their display at this year’s Mooloolah Community Family Fun Day on Sunday, October 14 at the Mooloolah Community Centre.

“We wanted the kids to learn a skill they can then take home,” Russell said.

Planned activities include ‘Swingho’, Origami, ‘A-maze-ment’, ‘leg x-tender’ and a ‘Jungle Book’ inspired team board game.

Cub Scouts There will also be an exhibition and a slime dip prize draw for those kids who complete all the challenges on the day.

The Mooloolah Family Fun day is a free event with something for everyone including market stalls, free kids rides all day, food, workshops, live music and entertainment.

Glass House Mountains artist Neville Field is keen to work with others to form our own Artists Trail, which is a great way to showcase artists and their Studio/galleries to promote their skills and their art to visitors.

There are some moments in life that we never forget and each year the sight of the first Richmond Birdwing butterfly of the season is surely one of the most memorable.

Since this butterfly was on the verge of extinction until a few years ago, to see one at all is an experience not to be missed.

Recently I was thrilled to have a beautiful male butterfly literally fall at my feet as I was watering the garden. He appeared to have just hatched, was not in a hurry to fly away and spent some time drying his wings. Of course I could not miss the wonderful opportunity to bring out the camera.

If you have planted the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines, (Pararistolochia praevenosa) in your garden, or property, now is the time to watch out for both male and female of the species. If we increase the number of vines planted in our local area, the greater the chance of seeing these beautiful butterflies. The larvae of the butterfly feed solely on the young leaves of the vine.

‘FOCAS’ on fellowship The Church on the Rise has recently formed a ‘singles’ group for Christians over 35 in the local area and they want to spread the word to encourage others to get involved.

The group is being lead by Ashley Elias whose goal is to create an atmosphere where like minded people with a common lifestyle, whether they be Christian or non-Christian, who are on their own can enjoy social activities with others.

Ashley is keen to encourage single people whether they have always been single or have recently separated from a partner, or who have been divorced or widowed to see this as a great opportunity get out and enjoy themselves.

For many years around 20 keen digital photographers and computer photo manipulators have met in the Beerwah Library meeting room each Thursday under the guidance of Alistair Davis to grow and share their knowledge.

Each week Alistair would bring and set up his own screens and equipment so that everyone could see what was being shown and taught.

Tables, laptops, screens and connecting wires took up most of the space in the meeting room and viewing the screens became quite difficult.

Following the successful application to Sunshine Coast Council for a grant for a large TV screen, the group can now enjoy viewing their work clearly and there is also more room for more participants. This TV screen is

Chloe remains the pride of Glasshouse Country

Earlier this month, wildlife fundraising superstar Chloe Tsangaris proudly represented Glass House as she took centre stage alongside fellow finalists at Customs House, Brisbane, for the Queensland Pride of Australia environment award.

Chloe proudly displays her award And while she didn’t take out the top prize, the passionate wildlife fundraiser, who was also nominated for the award the year before, had a wonderful, awe inspiring day.

According to mum Kylie, as part of the experience, Chloe was able to meet some wonderful people, and asked many questions about what they have been doing in the community.

“I was extremely proud of little Chloe on the day especially seeing her there with so many adults,” Kylie said.

“It was a wonderful experience for her.”

Trail running is it a sport or an addiction?

Long standing member of Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN), Bill Thompson, cannot stay away from the area, despite moving to the backblocks of Western Australian some eight months ago.

Though not far short of his 70th birthday, Bill could not resist participating in and completing the recent 100 mile event at the Glasshouse Trail. This is the 12th time Bill has run the 100 mile event and on most occasions he’s finished under the set time of 30 hours.

Bill was joined by his wife Jane who is always present at the checkpoints to provide Bill’s favourite food and minister first aid to tired muscles and sore feet.

Runners approach a check point been held by the Trail Running Association of Queensland (TRAQ), for over 20 years, with much of checkpoint manning and catering supplied by GMAN. TRAQ promotes trail running for fun, fitness and as a sport.

The Glass House runs are held on four occasions throughout the year and include events from 12 kilometres to 100 and 160 kilometres.

Unfortunately continuation of the runs is in jeopardy due to the activities of trail bikes and 4wd vehicles that damage the tracks as well as threaten the lives of runners by altering signage along the route.

Last week students from Glasshouse Country Christian College were privileged to meet and hear from hugely popular writer, Justin D’Ath. Author of more than 30 children’s books, Justin D’Ath’s titles include ‘Extreme Adventures’, the ‘Mission Fox’ series, ‘Why did the Chykkan cross the Galaxy’ and many more.

Mr D’Ath was just as entertaining as his books as he talked to the students about the whole process of writing a book and explained it in ways the children could understand.

“Editors are like really mean school teachers because they keep changing your writing and telling you to go back and write it again,” Mr D’Ath said.

Mr D’Ath spent some time reading excerpts from his books, taking the students to the edge of their seats with excitement and then saying, “and that’s the end of that chapter” much to the children’s groans of disappointment.

After the talk, there was opportunity for the children to have their books signed. One Year 3 student said to Mr D’Ath, “your books are

seriously awesome!” Quick as anything Mr D’Ath replied, “you have seriously good taste in authors.”

GCCC’s teacher librarian Vanessa McKellar had been introducing the books to the students for some time so there was a lot of excitement when they learned that the series was being turned into a TV show called ‘Extreme Adventures’.

Nicola Ketley and Karen Ferguson kept them entertained with stories titled ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’, ‘One Woolly Wombat’ and ‘Dear Zoo.’ To the delight of the Preps the ladies brought puppets as well.

Nicola and Karen produced a parachute and bubble machine to create an atmosphere of pure pleasure whilst singing to the well-known tune ‘You can sing a rainbow’.

Unity College held our very first ‘Grandparent Morning’, this was filled with a special and heart-warming Liturgy, rolling into an amazing concert where Unity College showcased their many artistic talents with singing, dancing and instrument playing. Students up for the challenge Landsborough State School's Year 5 students recently took part in a Picture Book Readers Cup Challenge to celebrate Book Week.

Readers Cup is an interschool competition where teams of students read a set selection of books and then compete in the ‘challenge’, which is a quiz about the books.

The event was conducted like a web conference with all students signing onto a computer at a set time and then being able to interact and compete live with other schools.

Coolnwynpin State School designed this challenge and a total of 12 schools across Queensland became involved.

To complete the challenge, the Year 5PT class from Landsborough was divided into teams where together they read books, and then competed with a team from another school to answer quiz questions from the books.

Teacher, Mrs Terri-Lyn Schulz, said the session was highly engaging and her students loved the opportunity to interact live with another school. Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading.

Champ Visits Landsborough Kindy Olwyn the Community Relations Manager for Guide dogs Sunshine Coast, brought Champ a Guide dog in training to visit the Landsborough Kindergarten recently.

The children learnt how guide dogs assist the visually impaired with Champ even giving demonstrations. Most importantly they learnt not to distract guide dogs by patting them when they are wearing their 'working' jacket.

Once Champ’s jacket was taken off though, everyone was keen to give him a pat. It was a great learning experience for the children and a big thank you to Olwyn and Champ.

Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club Contributed by Michael Whiticker It was a quieter than usual night at the Sports Club recently which allowed some acts to let their hair down and in some cases play five numbers.

We welcomed newcomers who retained the high standard we seem to expect from our musicians these days. Recently arrived from Ballarat, young singer AJ accompanied herself - with some support from Paul Fagan, in songs from Van Morrison, Kasey Chambers and the Dixie Chicks and even gave us her own ‘bathroom’ version of the classic ‘Midnight Special’. She has a natural stage presence and a strong earthy voice. We welcome her back to the Club, along with her step father Craig Greene who joined her on stage for a Daddy Cool number. He displayed an impressive voice with an exceptional range and has assured us he’ll back with partner Kerrie Watson in the near future to perform for us.

Another newcomer was Gerry O’Regan who gave us two songs in the British folk singers tradition, allowing us a nice blend of styles in an evening which moved from the impressively played Shadows repertoire of Clive Bilby with his new band Shatter, to the 80s rock of Jon Brown and newcomer Glenn Stephens.

Glenn is a fine pianist and singer whose repertoire with Jon included Mental as Anything, Crowded House and Toto’s ‘Africa’ - sung in those very high registers with Jon’s tight harmonies and guitar accompaniment.

Other performers for the evening included Frank Moroney whose sets are always worthy of note. In this case it was train songs with stories of box cars and freight trains conjuring up that prewar mid west US country and folk music world, which Frank’s low, slightly muffled voice suitably matched. Mick Dawson also performed a set of originals for us with his new Turner guitar and bassist Doug Pullen played to his usual reliable high standard, while Trigger (Aaron Tregea) on guitar included an impressive ‘Betterman’ sung by AJ. Trigger gains confidence with each performance and we look forward to his showing at each session.

Celebrating 40 years since ‘Harvest’, we have an evening featuring the music of Neil Young and friends and our next session fortnight. Interest has mounted for this event with at least eight performers booking spots.

Doing Business Five minutes with Sean Docherty, new publican at Glasshouse Mountains Tavern When he first arrived in Glass House, the first thing that struck Sean Docherty, the new publican at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, was the friendliness of the locals. Just nine weeks down the track, he now knows many of them by name, and has already received plenty of positive feedback about the changes happening down at the Tavern.

Tell us a bit about your background and experience I’ve been involved in the hospitality industry for the past 25 years, including 12 years in management. Prior to moving to Glass House, my wife Debbie and I were based in Sean with wife Debbie Gladstone.

Tell us about some of the changes that patrons can expect to see at the Tavern?

We’ve already done a bit of a makeover in the front bar, creating more of a sports bar environment with new televisions, and that is just the start of it. We’ve also introduced a fantastic new menu that features signature dishes along with daily and seniors specials. Patrons will notice we have more weekly competitions, a free sausage sizzle every Saturday afternoon in the Beer Garden, and free pool on Wednesdays. Combined with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and great live entertainment, we’re on our way to making the venue a more family-friendly club.

What other plans do you have in store for the Tavern?

It’s a great pub in a great location with just so much potential. Debbie and I would really like to grow the venue and see it become a valued part of the local community. My aim is to make it a more family oriented venue, with a focus on supporting community and sports groups, by offering sponsorships, and getting more involved with local events.

The aim of this project is to create a complete online database of the names and military histories of approximately 1,400 Sunshine Coast diggers and nurses who served in World War 1. An invitation is extended to residents of the Sunshine Coast to adopt a digger, research the military history and upload the findings to the website database. Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky The first three months with the newly elected President, John Kemp of our Rotary Club have been both busy and rewarding. It all started with the Change-Over Dinner at the end of June; an event which filled the Beerwah Hotel and was enjoyed by both Rotarians and guests.

In July the Rotary Club and friends from other Rotary Clubs, plus some Lion’s Club members, enjoyed an educational tour and barbecue at the Caloundra Air Museum. Who would have thought that there are such rare and historic aircraft on display so close to us?

Around mid August the Club members, friends and family met at the Ettamogah Pub.

Later that evening a young local lady, Jordyn Archer took centre stage and informed us about the plight of child trafficking in Asia.

Some children are only five years old! Her organisation ‘Chant4Change’ raises funds by organising live music and dance events. What an inspiring young lady! Not only is her aim to stop child trafficking abroad, but also to help our local homeless people by organising a weekly barbecue treat in Cotton Tree.

Last weekend the members enjoyed a great Sunday at the Races at the Corbould Park Race Course together with Rotarians from other clubs on the Sunshine Coast. This event is organised

by The Rotary Club of Caboolture as their main fundraiser. Our members did pick some winners!

You Said It How long will it take?

I write in support of the recent article about the condition of Old Gympie Road. Last month I drove our Councillor along the stretch between Bankfoot House and Beerburrum Road.

I did this to make sure he was aware of its condition, its safety hazards and lack of modern road engineering.

I find I need to use this road frequently, mostly at night and often in the wet. When passing oncoming vehicles one can only hold the wheel firmly, hope that the road condition does not cause you to deviate and that the road does not curve before your vision clears.

Apart from the lack of road lines etc, the placement of signs causes your headlights to reflect back onto the drivers eyes causing temporary blindness.

Similar to comments by other writers cause me to wonder how many accidents and injuries we have to have before we have 21st century roads in Glasshouse.

I’m still waiting for a response from my Councillor on this matter.

Just not right

Recently I was sitting at home when I noticed a young couple walking very close to my mother front garden and letter box. I was curious to see what they were doing, so I had a look out of our front window and clearly saw that the beautiful pink flowers that had been in my mother’s garden where now gone.

Then on a closer look I noticed that the flowers were in a basket the couple was carrying, then from our mail box they walked across the road to our neighbour’s front yard and started pulling out their purple flowers!

It was obvious that someone was at home but this didn’t impact on them. My mother wouldn’t have minded if they had come and asked if they could take a few cuttings, but to tramp through someone else’s garden, walking on plants and

pulling out whatever they wanted when we bought the flowers to have there, is not right.

I think it is rude of them to take whatever they want and not ask especially from other people’s property.

Why?

We have been lobbying Sunshine Coast Council for several years to ban rodeos and circuses in our region. These incredibly cruel forms of ‘fun, family entertainment’ have been banned by many councils in Australia.

With new councillors it was our opportunity to present to them and show just how horrific the injuries, physical and psychological, to animals are when confined and made to perform.

Cr Tony Wellington very kindly took our request to council recently and we are incredibly disturbed that the new councillors are comfortable with accepting this form of cruelty in our region.

With the RSPCA very much against circuses and rodeos, we wonder why these paid public servants that represent us, are so accepting knowing that our region is light years behind other regions on this issue and do not want to take the opportunity to make an informed decision after seeing the presentation from a leading scientist from the RSPCA? The real question

I refer to the article in last week's Glasshouse Country News about the appalling conditions of the roads in Glass House Mountains and surrounds as well as Cr Hungerford's comments hiding behind a Pavement Management System.

Perhaps the real question to be asked is ‘are Council staff suitably qualified to be undertaking their roles and are they complying with the legislative requirements relating to the Engineering Act 2002?’ Is there a registered professional engineer amongst them that can sit in front of the board of professional engineers

and demonstrate that they are experienced in pavement design and rehabilitation and have been designing treatments and supervising construction works? After all we are speaking about $20 million of rate payers money.

Perhaps an independent party could also investigate where the contributions paid by the quarry are being spent. I believe that Council staff are supposedly bound by a code of ethics and maybe someone needs to investigate whether this is being complied with as well.

What’s going on?

Each week I scour your newspaper looking for any information about the latest situation at the Mooloolah Valley Sports Club (aka The Country Club). The only apparent clues seem to be found in the weekly contribution in your sports pages from the Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club. This club appears to have exclusive access to the Country Club premises to the exclusion of the broader community.

Through the sports page, the Bowls Club have publicly advertised their AGM to be held on September 29 at 10.00am, presumably at the Country Club premises.

I would encourage as many people a possible to attend this meeting as it appears to be a rare opportunity to find out what Is going on.

Questions should be asked like, ‘how is it that a Bowls Club can apparently operate out of the premises of another club that is in the hands of receivers while members of the broader community are excluded?’

Year Of The Farmer

2012 was designated in Australia as the Year of the Farmer, and there have been activities and events during the year reminding Australians to celebrate how much farmers contribute to every aspect of our daily life.

Peachester History Committee (PHC) will participate in this national focus year and celebrate the farming heritage of the Peachester district with "Year of the Farmer" as the theme for our next meeting on Sunday October 7.

Like most of the region we now know as the Sunshine Coast, in the 1870s and 1880s the www.gcnews.com.au Peachester area attracted the attention of timbergetters. Pioneer settlers soon followed, and

communities of farming families were established.

Dairy farming quickly became the main industry in the hinterland, especially in the Maleny and Peachester districts; however many other farming pursuits have been recorded and some are still part of the landscape today: sugar cane, bananas, citrus, maize, vegetables, pigs, poultry, flowers, and in recent decades macadamia nuts, avocados, strawberries, and exotic fruits. On the coastal side of the range pineapples predominated around Beerwah and Glass House Mountains, and tobacco was an important industry for many years.

Great changes have taken place in recent decades.

Much of the early farm land is now rural residential.

The few remaining farmers have had to embrace new technologies and increase production, while combating rising costs and low returns.

Dairying is an interesting example: when Archie Banks took over as Peachester cream carrier in 1954 (taking cream cans to the Caboolture Butter Factory) he had 44 dairy farms on his run. Now there are four farms, each producing more milk than the whole district produced in 1954. The milk

Glasshouse State School Festival

We had great sunny weather for the festival, which I'm sure helped to boost attendance, but a little rain wouldn’t go astray, especially for people on water tanks. Make sure you book in early if the water tank is looking a little low as water is in high demand at the moment. The Rural Fire Brigade was at the Glasshouse State School festival reminding us all to be prepared this fire season. The festival was an excellent mix of music, displays and rides, given a fresh burst of energy and enthusiasm from Carly and Judy the two new organisers. There were plenty of local stallholders, sausages from the Lions and a big raffle to boot. I was the lucky person who got to draw the raffle and was more than relieved not to pull my own name out of the barrel.

Beerwah Place+

Council recently held an information session with local traders and property owners about progress on the Place+ project. We received some valuable feedback and encouraged the business community to get involved now as we are getting close to producing a Draft Masterplan. This is the prime time for the business community to ascertain how the business environment in Beerwah can be improved through Place+ and discuss what the implications might be on local business during implementation of the project.

Landsborough on a Saturday morning

Landsborough was abuzz at the weekly market with lots of interesting items for sale including arts and crafts and the usual good selection of plants.

It also hosted a local Dementia Awareness Day and a chance to learn more about the impacts of dementia on local families. It’s a complex issue and one that we could all learn some more about in relation to support in our growing community. I also met with the President of the Hall Committee to talk about the significant structural issues the building has. There are some complicated ownership and responsibility factors to think through and I will be working in partnership with the Hall Committee, community members and agencies to see what can be done to repair and upgrade the facility.

Come to the regular Mooloolah breakfast catch-up on Thursday, September 27 at 7.30am at the Thunderbird Café. There’s plenty to catch up about including the proposed shelter shed at Martin Rugert Park, and the walking path from the Haven on the Eudlo-Mooloolah Road into Mooloolah.

We’ll also have the wonderful Amanda back to tell us about what the community had to say about the concept proposal for the Mooloolah recreation reserve.

Mooloolah recreation reserve

We received a fantastic response from locals about the proposed plans for the rec reserve. Overwhelmingly people want to keep the reserve in its natural state and identified walking and picnicking as the most popular uses. Another interesting result was that close to 55 per cent of locals use the reserve for dog-walking. All the information collated will feed into the Masterplan and if you can’t make the community breakfast meeting I will keep you posted in this column on plans for the reserve.

Family fun day

The Mooloolah family fun day is on again on Sunday, October 14 at the Mooloolah community centre. It’s free entry, there’ll be free rides for the kids and I’ll be there with free native local trees to give away.

Remember to bring your rates notice along (for the free trees) and come along to meet with me and other community members on this big day out in Mooloolah.

Draft Sunshine Coast planning scheme

As soon as State Government gives the go-ahead, draft plans for a new Sunshine Coast planning scheme will be made widely available.

Are Recurring Headaches Controlling Your Life?

Are headaches robbing you of the life you deserve?

Day after day of missing out on things you deserve, or just being miserable, irritable and looking much older than you really are?

Recurring headaches are not normal!

While headaches are terribly common, they are NOT normal. The normal condition of the human body is vibrant and healthy...not tired and painful! Pain is our body’s alarm system that something is wrong.

So – if you often say “It feels like my head is in a vice”, or “I’ve had migraines since puberty” or “My neck and shoulders are always tight and tense” and you just want to go and lie down - then pay close attention now.

Four major causes of headaches are dehydration, stress, food intolerance, and neck subluxations. And each of these causes has a path to relief.

The most little known is neck subluxation.

Can This Help Your Headaches?

Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe “dysfunctional” vertebrae in the spine. Upper neck subluxations very commonly cause “Cervicogenic Headaches”. This type of headache presents with neck stiffness and pain at the base of your skull, which can sometime radiate through to your eyeballs. Drugs can reduce the symptoms (turn off the body’s alarm) for a while, but they do not correct the cause – and the symptoms return.

Many studies have shown the benefits of treating the neck subluxations of headache sufferers, including the Boline and Duke Studies. If you are having headaches – something is wrong.

I recently chatted to the new sports club General Manger, Jay Globits about the club’s facilities and he said one of the things that has really impressed him was the club’s dining / function room.

Over the years, the club has served meals on Thursday and Friday nights, proving to be very popular with local families and has a loyal group of regular diners.

However, what Jay sees as an excellent community asset is that the function room is available for the community for the rest of the week.

“When the clubhouse was originally built, they fortunately had the vision to create such a large open function room, with a big commercial kitchen, its own bar and its separate toilets which makes the venue perfect for holding a private function,” Jay said.

Depending on how the room is configured it can seat 200 plus which makes it the biggest function room in the local area.

It is perfect for weddings and has hosted some great functions, wedding anniversary parties, milestone birthdays, and cocktail parties since it was built.

“The fact that we can set the room up to suit individual celebrations / events as well as providing professional quality catering and experienced bar staff takes all the hassle out of organising an event,” Jay said.

“Our Chef, Paul Rogers, has extensive experience in the industry including working in 5-Star establishments which means he is able meet our client’s dining requirements.

Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church I just wanted to dedicate this little article to a super special family that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to bless those that don’t have as much as we do living here in the lucky country.

They also happen to be my family, the Edwards family. You may have seen in past issues of GCNews the ongoing connection we have with a little village in the Southern Highlands of PNG, the Songut village, (translated ‘Good Song’).

Well, last year we set out to see if we could raise enough funds to send a Landcruiser Troop Carrier over to be used as the village vehicle to bring goods from the town to the people and be used as an emergency transport vehicle whenever somebody was hurt or injured in the jungle. The fundraising didn’t end up as widespread as we imagined and the busy year went by so quickly that any plans for great events to bring in the money never got off the ground.

However a vehicle for the village was still in our hearts and with a little help from the Glasshouse Community Church, mum and dad and my brother Joel, pulled together enough of their own money to buy the car and fill it with stuff that will bless the socks off our brothers and sisters in Songut.

While my visit will be a short two weeks at the end of October, my parents have committed to rough it in the jungle for a couple of months so they can focus on helping them adjust to a life where civilization is forcing in on them, and their traditions are being threatened.

The Bible says that religion, that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world, (James 1:27).

While this stuff will bless the Songut locals, their faith and lifestyle teaches us so much about the important things in life as well.

This is what drives us to give beyond a two dollar donation to the heart foundation each year, and this time mum, dad and Joel have given until it hurts.

The stress and organisation of importing a car to PNG has been a real challenge. Will you pray with us that this car and equipment will arrive safe and sound and there will be no added unnecessary costs involved in getting it where it is needed most (because we’ve run out of money!)

The kids have just walked into the house with guilty looks on their faces. Their lips are a purple bruised colour, their hands are blood red and the same colour is spreading across their T-shirts. “Oh no.” I groaned, “they’ve been at it again!”

They most certainly have been at it again. Not fighting, but up the Mulberry tree. The stains are the unavoidable juice exuded from perfectly ripened fruit, the delicious sign that spring is here.

The Mulberry, known botanically as Morus, is a genus of about 10 species of long lived, deciduous trees with some originating from China and some from North America.

The genus has a rich history, having travelled far and wide, been mentioned in ancient texts and literature and revealed itself in archaeological digs.

One species, Morus alba or White Mulberry produces a sweet but relatively tasteless fruit. However this tree is pivotal in silk production because the silk worm feeds on its leaves.

For the home gardener, two other species are worth growing.

Morus rubra is a large tree (over 20m tall) which produces a small, tart red fruit. This tree is more often grown for its shape and shade than its fruit.

Morus nigra or the Black Mulberry is the one to grow if you want to eat heavenly Black Mulberry ripening on the tree berries. It grows in a wide variety of conditions to a height of 13 metres and produces dark purple, almost black fruit up to 3cm long. The fruit is not commercially harvested because it has a short shelf life and is fragile. It should be eaten fresh or frozen for later use in tarts jam or wine making.

Hardwood cuttings strike easily. Take the cutting after leaf fall. I have found leaving the whole cut branches untouched for a month or so before striking increases the success rate. Depending on the time the cutting is taken, they may even fruit before roots are properly set. Knock these off to help with root development.

Shape or thin the tree by pruning when the tree is dormant (early winter). If your soil is low in nutrients, apply a flowering and fruiting fertiliser in late winter.

Birds are the greatest pest as far as harvesting goes. For the serious Mulberry user, netting will ensure a substantial crop. I keep my trees small and manageable, net it over a steel pole frame and harvest around 22kg of juicy fruit.

We think it so important to educate our kids about growing and harvesting their own food, but when you see them in the Mulberry tree, you realise they already know how good it is. Morus for most kids would be pronounced More-for-us if they wrote the books!

Tibro’s proud performance Contributed by Wendy Carroll With the Netball season now over for 2012, I would like to commend all Tibro’s club members for displaying great sportsmanship and valour both on and off the court.

This year we had several teams in the finals with 4 making the Grand Final. The Jaspers (Under 10 Div 1), Sapphires (Under 11 Div 2), Gems (Inter C Div 2) and Onyx (Inter A) played their Grand Finals on Saturday September 15 at Caloundra Indoor Sports Stadium.

There were plenty of nervous faces as the games began at 8.30am sharp. First up were the Jaspers with a nail biter! The girls played so well and tried so hard. The scores were tied at full time and they only lost by 1 goal in extra time, defeated 18-17 by the Meridan Ladybugs.

The Gems played next also against Meridan.

The girls played their best game of the season and were never at risk of losing. The Gems are premiers for 2012, winning the game 25-14.

Both the Jaspers and the Onyx put in a huge effort but were beaten in their games. Well done to all teams for making the Grand Final spots, it is a great achievement for the club and we are very proud of you all.

Club presentation followed later that day and was a lot of fun. I would like to take this time to acknowledge all of our fantastic Umpires.

Without them we would not have a club or a competition. Firstly, Dimi Young. Dimi has worked tirelessly to receive her ‘National B’ badge. This is an incredible achievement – well done Dimi. Congratulations to Storm Douglas for receiving her ‘Junior A’ badge. Also to Peyton Grant, Chelsea Carroll and Tegan Gisler for achieving their ‘Junior B’ badges. Well done girls, the club is very proud of your commitment.

We also see an end of an era with our Club President Mary-Lou Oliver handing over the reins to David Johnson. Mary-Lou has been our President for the past five years and has made many fantastic changes and improvements along the way. Thanks to Mary-Lou, we will soon be seeing the start of work on our new club house.

From all of the Tibro’s community we thank you sincerely for your time, ideas and commitment to make the club as great as it is.

Lastly, a huge thank you to all of the Club Committee members, Coaches and Managers.

Monday, September 17: Ladies Strawberry Fair Day. 64 players made up 16 teams of four from 12 District clubs plus Glasshouse. This made for a great day of competition. The winners were from Glasshouse – Rae Farrell, Kerry Capern, Phil Siggers, Stewart Wilson. Runners-up were a team from Bribie Island led by Judy Noonan. The lucky draw team was from Donnybrook. The day was considered a great success by all. The catering was done by Club Glass House which went over very well. Many thanks to Sharon and her team.
