The Cancer Council encourages Aussie teens to celebrate their ‘original skin’ by launching its annual SunSmart competition www.cancer.org. au/originalskin for teenagers, calling on all Aussie kids aged 12 to 17 years to get creative, showing off their original skin. To go in the running to win some great prizes, teenagers are asked to create a short film, image or creative writing piece that shows why natural skin is ‘in’ this summer. SunSmart Co-ordinator at Cancer Council Queensland, Rachel Adams, said many young Queenslanders still spent too much time in the sun unprotected, despite the risks of skin cancer. 18 |

“Many teens think that a glowing tan is a sign of health, but there is nothing healthy about a tan,� she said. “A tan is your body’s way of telling you that your skin cells are in trauma and this puts you at risk of being one of the over 2,660 Queenslanders diagnosed with a potentially fatal melanoma each year.� Queensland has amongst the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with over 130,000 non-melanoma skin cancers diagnosed each year. Through this competition, Cancer Council is challenging teens to show their friends that natural skin is in and tanning is out.

“We want teens to show us that they know better and that they are proud of their natural skin.� Original Skin competition prizes include: First prize: Slazenger sports packs valued at $520.00 each; second prize: iLuv Audio Cube iPad Speaker Docks, also compatible with iPhone and iPod valued at $180.00 each; third prize: Moosehead urban hair packs valued at $65.00 each.
