OCTOBER 26 2016

Hi Everyone

F

a La La La Christmas is almost here! Well we have been waiting until a suitable time to start stating the obvious - the final countdown is now officially on for Christmas. Once I saw the big decorations being attached to the Council Christmas trees in Rotary Park at Glass House Mountains and the Flame tree in the centre of the roundabout at Maleny – I thought I am good to go with Christmas talk! In our office we have a tradition that we follow about when we start to put up the Christmas Decorations – when we get back from our Melbourne Cup lunch – out come the boxes of sparkly decorations. If you are wondering what the natural link would be with these two occasions – after getting all dressed up, heading out to a big Melbourne Cup Lunch and maybe even a glass of bubbles, it is kind of difficult to get your focus back on emails and phone calls – so it has officially become the ‘Day for Decorating’! So here’s to picking a winner and for the decorating to begin! Regards,

Maleny Golf Club, is celebrating the first Hole-in-One carded by a female member in competition since the 9-hole public course opened in July last year. Saturday, October 8 2016 will go down in the annals of the club's history as yet another red letter day when Liz Mellish aced the Par 3 Third Hole from 140m off the red markers to score her first Hole-In-One. “I used my 3 wood off the tee and really hit what turned out to be the perfect shot,” said Liz, a management consultant and academic, who was playing in a 2 Ball Ambrose event at the time. “The ball landed just on the front of the green and my playing partners and I all watched in amazement as it continued to roll up to the hole and fall in. I’m so thrilled!” Liz, 59, is the first female member of Maleny Golf Club to earn a place on the Terry Lee Memorial Hole-In-One Honour Board and joins fellow member John Oxenham who aced the Par 3 Fifth hole in March during a competition round. Club President Dr Max Whitten said members were delighted to be celebrating yet another milestone in the club’s history. “This is fantastic news for both our young club and for ladies golf here in Maleny and our congratulations go out to Liz,” Dr Whitten said. “The club is a strong supporter and promoter of ladies golf and historic achievements such as this

are all the more memorable at this early stage of our development.” The odds of an amateur golfer achieving a HoleIn-One are estimated to be around 12,500-to-1. Hans van Sambeeck was the first member to achieve a Hole-In-One on the course when he aced the 3rd hole during a practice round in March. The 9-hole course designed by Graham Papworth has a par of 35 (or 70 for 18 holes). Caloundra junior Sean Daines holds the club’s 18-hole gross course record for men after carding 72 off the stick during a competition here in September. The ladies 18-hole gross course record of 82 is presently held by another promising junior Jessica Cook from Woodford.

The Kev’s Joinery team have been just brilliant to deal with both times I’ve employed their expertise. Two years ago the original 1980’s kitchen was cleanly and swiftly removed with the new cabinetry set in place before I could blink! The team ensures the support trades are ready to go and by the next day the tiles were on. Kev has recently completed the removal of the old laundry, and replaced it with an appreciatively more modern and streamlined laundry area. Once again, even a simple and basic job was no trouble to him and his team, and was again treated with the same courtesy and respect. I’m very happy with the wonderful changes! I recognise the precision and quality of Kev’s Joinery ethics and would definitely recommend them.

More girl (mountain bike) power! By Sonia Clark

Following on from our recent cover story about young BMX rider Kameli Jones, GC&M News was contacted by another proud mum of local ‘girl power’ star Holly Lubke, who has also been steadily achieving success in her chosen sport of cross country mountain bike riding. Fourteen-year-old Holly lives in Beerwah but spends much of her time riding through the Glass House Mountains. At the beginning of this month, the Glasshouse Christian College student travelled to Mackay to participate in the QLD State XCO (Cross Country Olympic) Championships 2016. Winning her category on a highly technical and challenging track doing five km laps - Holly is now the under 15w QLD State XCO 2016 Champion. Not bad for a young lady who has only been riding for two years and hated the sport the first time she tried it! Holly was introduced to the sport by her mum Louise who worked with the wife of mountain bike enthusiast and trainer Craig Quinn. Craig runs ‘Eleven Hills Adventures’ (named after the 11 mountains in the Glasshouse area), a mountain bike venture that provides mountain bike hire, outdoor education, guide and school camps. Holly is committed to her sport riding every day, as well as training with Craig two to three times per week, along with weekly rides with the Sunshine Coast Hinterland MTB Group. She currently has two bikes; a training bike and her racing bike which she has nicknamed ‘the stealth bomber’. Already this year Holly has achieved numerous

top rankings in competitions around the State and is working her way towards attempting a placing at National level. Next year Holly is training to compete in the U17 category of the 2017 XCO National Series, consisting of seven rounds in Orange NSW, Armidale, NSW, Bairnsdale VIC and Toowoomba QLD. “It’s really hard work as it tests your limits,” says Holly. “My coach Craig has always said that people with endurance and mental stamina achieve well in mountain biking. I’d like more girls to do it as it really is a lot of fun. “It’s changed me and made me more confident. I feel like I can achieve anything now,” she adds. If anyone is interested in mountain bike riding locally or would like to have a go, contact Eleven Hills Adventures on 0408 400 723 or check out their webpage www.11hills.com.au or the Facebook page for more details.

New SEQ Plan released

Plan shapes our region

The long awaited new Draft South East Queensland Regional Plan (ShapingSEQ) has been released by Jackie Trad, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.

The newly released draft South East Queensland Regional Plan (ShapingSEQ) details a number of issues relating to the Sunshine Coast and our local region.

Minister Trad explains that ShapingSEQ provides a framework for managing the region's growth over the next 25 years and sets a vision for the next 50 years. “Its development has included significant consultation with state and local governments and the community in response to the region's expected changing population, both in size (5.3 million people by 2041) and demographics,” she explained. “It is imperative that we manage this growth sensibly and sustainably – this is what this draft of ShapingSEQ is all about. “The draft ShapingSEQ seeks to promote the things that SEQ residents value like a connected region, affordable housing, protecting our natural environment and our unique lifestyle. “For the first time, ShapingSEQ sets a 50-year vision for our region to ensure we protect the attributes and values we love and capitalise on future opportunities and emerging trends,” said Minister Trad. ShapingSEQ is now open for community feedback by formal submission until midnight, Friday, March 3. The document and other information can be found at www.shapingseq.com.au If you’d like to learn more, the ShapingSEQ project team will be hosting 'Talk to a Planner' sessions throughout November and December. Locally, sessions will be held on: • Saturday, November 19 at the CCSA Hall, Nutley Street, Caloundra, 10.00am – 1.00pm • Saturday, November 26 at the Caboolture Hub, 4 Hasking Street, Caboolture, 10.00am – 1.00pm. You are asked to register your interest in attending one of the sessions by going to www.shapingseq.com.au and clicking on ‘Talk to a planner’.

Planning for population growth is a key function. The plan identifies that the Sunshine Coast will expand from its present 287,500 residents (2015) to be 495,000 strong by 2041. The plan sets out that at all times, local governments will be required to have at least 15 years supply of land—land that has been zoned and is able to be serviced. Locally, this has been flagged as new communities at Caloundra South (or the current Stockland ‘Aura’ development), the current Palmview development and previously identified ‘Beerwah East’ future Greenfield site. The controversial Halls Creek site (owned by Stockland) remains flagged in the plan as a ‘potential future growth area’. The plan also maintains a green ‘interurban break’ between this region and Caboolture, however the boundary has been pulled south to be below the Halls Creek area, despite the request from council that it extend to the southern edge of Caloundra South. Beerwah is named as a ‘major regional activity centre’, at the same planning level as Caloundra, Kawana, Caloundra South and Nambour. Regarding transport, the plan highlights the need for a major passenger transport connection from Beerwah to the coast – recognised currently as the CAMCOS corridor – which is listed as an infrastructure priority. Maleny has been identified as a ‘Great Place’, which are locations, nominated by councils, that provide a focus on urban quality and contribute to a more socially cohesive and economically successful region. The region’s principal agricultural land resources – specifically identifying Beerwah and Glass House Mountains – will be protected to preserve longterm food security and export opportunities. This includes preventing further land fragmentation and protecting agricultural activities from encroachment by incompatible uses.

Local Members support medicinal cannabis Bill Last week, the Minister for Health Cameron Dick, introduced the Public Health (Medicinal Cannabis) Bill for its second reading in parliament. Both local Members – Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell – spoke to the Bill, with both supporting its intentions. In Andrew’s address, he paid tribute to two Maleny locals who broadened his mind on the need for medicinal cannabis use – Harold Hopper and Bill Price. In his address, Mr Powell said… “In early 2014 two gentlemen, Harold Hopper and Bill Price, came to see me about medicinal cannabis oil usage in our community. Both Harold and Bill cited many examples that were known around the world of how medicinal cannabis was producing remarkable results. Harold explained the incredibly difficult situation he was facing with his wife suffering from severe dementia and going downhill very quickly. Bill, on the other hand, has a daughter who began seizures at the age of nine. She is now 40 and in full-time care. Even as recent as today, Bill informs me that she has had a severe seizure and has had to be hospitalised again for fear of cardiac arrest. Bill often laments that if only his daughter could have accessed cannabis oil she may have led a near normal life, but I must also point out that Bill’s daughter has never had medicinal cannabis oil because of the illegality and because she has been under the constant care of a doctor.”

October 31 is Halloween and the last day for lodgement of self-prepared tax returns The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requires all self-prepared income tax returns for Individuals, Partnerships, Trusts and SMSF’s to be lodged by October 31. If you haven’t done so yet then you can avoid a late lodgement penalty by lodging through a registered Tax Agent. A late lodgement penalty for an individual non-refund tax return is $180.00 if it is less than one month late but will grow by $180.00 for each further month late up to $600.00 if it is late by over five months. The penalty is not a tax-deductible expense unlike fees paid to a Tax Agent. If you intend to lodge through a Tax Agent you need to join their client list before October 31. If your child is under 21 years, receiving Youth Allowance and is considered dependant, then CentreLink will require you to advise them of your parental income (from your 2016 Income Tax Return) to correctly assess your child’s ongoing entitlement. The above information is provided by Colin Perryman Accounting Services (CPAS), which is a new Accountancy Practice and registered Tax Agent based at Mooloolah in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. For the past five years Colin Perryman has been a Lecturer/Tutor in Taxation, Financial Planning and Accounting at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Colin is a FCPA and holds a Masters in Taxation from UNSW. Colin can be contacted for an appointment on 0405 097 681 or at perryman@iinet.net.au Business feature 6

OCTOBER 26 2016

Andrew explained that Harold and Bill brought the matter to the local Maleny Liberal-National Party (LNP) Branch, which resulted in changes to the LNP platform at the following State Council. Andrew continued … “To Harold and Bill I am pleased to say that hopefully tonight their desires will come into law …” “As an aside, I know that there are a number of primary producers in the electorate of Glass House who are potentially looking forward to the ability to produce medicinal cannabis. It is important to point out that, although this matter is not contained in the bill, the committee has recommended that the Queensland government, through the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, prioritise its investigation of options for obtaining a licence to cultivate and manufacture medicinal cannabis in Queensland. It is also important to point out that this bill will be reviewed after two years of operation. “Therefore, it is with much pleasure, and after speaking with Harold and Bill today, that we see this bill potentially come to fruition, that they can potentially see some light at the end of the tunnel. In the case of Bill’s daughter, here is hoping that it is not too late.”

Unnecessary act of vandalism Unfortunately, Mooloolah Valley Community Centre was targeted twice in the recent spate of vandalism incidences that impacted the town from Friday, October 14 evening through to the morning of Monday, October 17. The damage and disruption at Mooloolah’s much loved Op Shop caused it to close without notice to regular customers on Monday, October 17 and the Centre would like to apologise to the community for any inconvenience. The closure enabled the volunteers to take photos of the considerable mess that was left for police and insurance purposes, as well as to allow the police to attend and make a report. It then took volunteers (of who many are senior community members) over four hours to clean up the unnecessary mess which included broken glass, louvers and crockery. In the face of such an unnecessary and destructive act, some of the volunteers were understandably distraught that the Centre had been targeted twice (Friday night and sometime again on Sunday) and needed time to process the destruction. Mooloolah State School and the businesses opening onto the IGA car park were also recipients of this unacceptable behaviour. One of the Centre volunteers (along with quite a few other people) witnessed a group of youths creating havoc for the businesses and customers at IGA early Saturday afternoon. The Mooloolah Valley Community Centre has now been lead to believe that at least one of the culprits may have been identified, but as it is now

a police matter they are presently unable to confirm anything until the investigation is completed. On a more positive note, the Mooloolah Valley Op Shop is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm. Come along and browse the clothing racks bursting with summer clothes. For the ladies who are planning a Melbourne Cup celebration, there are some lovely outfits, at extremely reasonable prices. 43 Bray Road Mooloolah, phone 5494 7822.

The Central Region of the Queensland Police Service (which stretches from Bowen to Beerburrum) has seen an increase in what are generally called ‘property offences’ over the last 12 month period. While police put strategies in place to combat property crime offences by using targeted patrols, utilising information in relation to past offences, forensic examinations and other investigative measures to prevent offences, the community can also assist. Over a four week period police are attempting to raise awareness in the community of what individuals can do to help reduce their possibility of becoming a victim of property crime. Week one (October 17) was about general property security and aimed to reinforce the need to properly secure items at places such as building sites where items of value may be left unattended overnight. Week two (October 24) is burglary offences which everyone can assist with. Make sure your home is not a ‘soft target’. Lock your doors and windows when you are out, even if it’s only for a short time. Don’t leave your front door unlocked if you are out the back and can’t hear

or see the front entry easily. Don’t leave valuable items such as tools and bikes in the yard or in unsecured sheds and garages. Get to know your neighbours and keep an eye out for each other. Week three (October 31) is vehicle security, both entry into vehicle and stealing of vehicles. Generally, vehicles produced later than the mid 90’s are fitted with immobilisers which makes it difficult to steal them without the key. If you leave the vehicle unattended you take the key with you even if you have just stopped in your driveway for a minute to pick up something you forgot or are going in to pay for fuel. It only takes seconds for a thief to spot the opportunity and act. If you are going to be away from your vehicle, make sure you lock it and if you can’t remove valuables, make sure they are well out of sight. Week four (November 7) covers fraud offences particularly in relation to credit cards and purchasing online. When purchasing items directly online, individuals need to ensure that they have some avenue of recourse if the purchase does not go as expected, or goods do not arrive. Always ensure that you have a reliable method of contacting the person or company you are dealing with or use a third party such as Paypal for your transaction.

Business Local News News Maleny Commerce October update With Spencer Shaw

Thanks to the team from Arts Connect for the presentation at our October Networking Meeting. This great local arts group is outstanding in their promotion of Art in our region and their Sculpture on the Edge Exhibition at Spicers Tamarind Retreat was an exceptional display of local, state and national sculpture. The exhibition was open to the public, if you missed it this year, be sure to make it next year. We’re ending our 2016 networking meetings with a celebration of our local business talent with a few of our ‘Local Legends’ of business presenting. This event is coming up on November 8 at The Garden. For more details visit www.malenycommerce.org.au. Join us for this last networking meeting of the year. Coming soon to assist with the parking issues of Maleny, Sunshine Coast Council is providing marked parking on Tamarind Street and regulated parking off Maple Street. As with all towns, we have limited parking, but due to our success as a regional centre and tourism hub, those parking spots are highly sought after. If we can reduce our use of parking spots by carpooling, cycling, walking etc, it’s not only good for business, but brings a health bonus too.

This year we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the formation of the Maleny and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry. We will be holding an anniversary dinner on November 24 at Pomodoras on Obi and look forward to celebrating the good businesses at the heart of our great little town. Past and Present members are all invited and it will be a great opportunity to catch-up. Keep up the good business, Maleny.

Taxi service acknowledged The Healthy Guru turns three Hinterland locals, Sharon and Steve Lee from Glasshouse Taxi Service, along with their drivers Andrew, Bruce and Scoty who offer the Maleny Taxi service, were recently nominated for the Carers Queensland Carer-Friendly Business Awards. Owned by Suncoast Taxi Service and managed by Sharon and Steve, both services were nominated for the great work they do in transporting young adults with special needs to and from the Compass Institute based in Palmwoods. Thrilled to be nominated for the ‘great service’ category and being awarded a certificate of appreciation for their services. “We were stoked to be nominated; it’s always great to get positive recognition for your work. We love helping people with the taxi services - some of our customers share their stories with us and over time we really get to know them. The Awards organised through Carers Australia QLD, recognises businesses and individuals that have demonstrated an understanding of the particular needs of unpaid family carers and have done that little bit extra when providing a service to assist a carer in their role. Steve and Sharon Lee accepting their certificate of appreciation

Last week, The Healthy Guru at Beerwah celebrated three years since the official opening of the holistic health focused store at Beerwah Marketplace on October 21, 2013. Unlike many other health food and holistic clinics on the Sunshine Coast, The Healthy Guru is a completely independently owned and operated business, run by co-owners Craig Harmer and Leanda Weyton who are thrilled to be part of a growing awareness about the benefits of healthy practices and living. The business was started from scratch with the intent to provide hinterland residents with a comprehensive and accessible holistic health store that included naturopathy and nutrition services, health products and a range of natural therapies. Both Craig and Leanda have brought a wealth of experience and spiritual expertise to share with their clients, and have always maintained that they would offer no product or service they would not personally use themselves. Leanda has built on over 15 years’ extensive experience in clinic and health food stores to ensure that the Healthy Guru has always offered the highest grade quality products, particularly in the vitamins and supplement ranges. This commitment to quality and range has seen the growth of Leanda’s Liquid Herbal Dispensary. Clients can enjoy the benefits of having herbal medicine specifically made for their individual requirements, to complement their healing journey, right here in the Hinterland – often saving them the journey to much further afield to access the same quality of service.

The distinct Healthy Guru logo and branding features a unique Cosmic Yogi linked together with the vibrant colours of orange, purple and green. Developed specially by Craig and Leanda, this branding conveys their love of Yoga and the eastern philosophies, recognising the importance of re-energising chakras. In the east, Chakra’s are known as the vital energy centres of the subtle body. Over the last three years, the store has extended modalities to include naturopathy, nutrition, reflexology, iridology and body alignment therapies - all of which have been matched in the retail store with larger varieties and extensive increases in product range. “It’s been a unique experience being part of a village environment and seeing the incredible growth in the area,” said Craig. “It has been wonderful to develop an intricate rapport with our customers and clients through the shop, our clinics and yoga classes over the last three years and we look forward to offering greater savings, more yoga classes, beachside retreats and local workshops.” The Healthy Guru Beerwah (two doors from Woolworth’s), Shop 3 Beerwah Marketplace. After visiting the craft pavilion at last years’ Maleny Show, local camel milk farm operator Lauren Brisbane realised that she could provide the local spinners and weavers group with a donated annual supply of this often sought after wool. Camels shed their coats once a year, yielding wool that is soft, easily blended and incredibly warm. The wool is perfect for crafting warmth generating clothing and for the local community, the wool can be crafted into beanies ahead of the cooler winter months, after the wool is spun. In Australia, Camels will begin moulting when the weather starts to get warmer, traditionally starting in November. In order to get the wool, the camels need to be groomed daily and the process can takes hours to groom and collect. At the local QCamel farm this process takes around two months to collect around 10kg – which may not sound like much after such a length of time, but as camel wool is very lightweight this equals a number of large garbage bags full. Inspired by the work on display by the local craft groups, three garbage bags filled with camel hair were donated to the Maleny based craft group with the only request that five beanies be knitted for the farm staff members. “Camel wool is easily blended with other warm fibres like merino or alpaca wool. It provides incredible insulation that is as light as a feather yet is as warm as toast!” enthused Lauren. The craft groups got busy and made some lovely beanies up for the team at QCamel.

Camel fibre - something different While the creative idea might have come from Lauren Brisbane from QCamels it was definitely the creative talent and know how of the Maleny Spinners and Weavers Group that made camel beanies possible. To find out more about the process we spoke to Heather Anderson from the group. Healther said after being first introduced to the idea of using local camel fibre, members from the craft group thought it would be interesting to not only use the fibre ‘for something different’ but also to visit the local camel farm during shedding season to see firsthand where it came from. Five members of the group spent a few hours getting to know more about camels and farm owner Lauren allowed the ladies to pluck the hair from the quieter camels. “It felt a bit odd plucking the camels but they didn’t seem mind and obviously we only pulled away the fibre that was shedding,” explained Heather. Additional hair was collected by farm owner Lauren and her staff during the shedding season and passed on to the craft group for use. The fibres were then washed to remove any dirt or debris, and the spinners that were interested in using the product, took it away to use. Heather decided to blend hers with merino and alpaca to soften it up – it was then spun into yarn to knit into finished products such as beanies.

10 years of fabulous shoes! Friday, October 28 marks 10 years since Anne Hughes first opened the doors at Imelda’s on Maple. During those 10 years, Anne and her wonderful staff have helped thousands of locals and visitors alike find their perfect shoe. Anne would like to thank every single one of her customers for their enduring support over the last 10 years and let them know that she has no plans to go anywhere for the foreseeable future. Anne also loves to give back to the community that has supported her and her shoes can often be seen walking the runway at most of the local charity fashion shows as well as going out west to support farmers in need. Imelda’s has long been known as the only place to go for all of your footwear needs. When asked what Anne thinks the secret behind her success is, she was quick to reply that she owes it all to her wonderful staff Annie, Kaylene, Cheryl and Charlie.

“Having staff who love coming to work and treat the business like it is their own is the reason people love coming back. Everyone who walks through our door is treated so nicely that a lot of our locals have become like family,” said Anne. “We even have repeat customers from Toowoomba, Brisbane and further afield. Our best testimonial is our happy customers.” And there are plenty of those. Anne and her team have a real passion for finding the right shoe for the right person, and Imelda’s offer a wide range of beautiful and distinctive shoes and accessories. Problem feet, hard to fit, orthodics, wide feet and those requiring extra support are all happily catered for as well. In fact, Anne started the business as she herself, had trouble finding good quality, beautiful shoes that fit well. Stocking both ladies and men’s shoes in small to larger sizes, including a huge range from fashionable flats that pop with colour to sturdy Australian made men’s work boots … customers will be spoilt for choice from the extensive and often wonderfully eclectic range. With beautifully crafted leather sandals, heels, boots and comfort shoes all at reasonable prices, you are guaranteed to find the perfect shoe for that special occasion or just the right everyday shoe for you. Whilst the majority of shoes are leather, there are also specialty vegan-friendly shoe options to be found. Along with shoes, Imelda’s also offer a large range of complimenting handbags, wallets and accessories in both bold, bright and more traditional colours.

With racing season coming up, now is the time to find the right accessory to perfectly match your special outfit. Why not drop in and let the staff assist you in providing suggestions that will complete your individual look. Leather care products are available to extend the life of your purchases including waterproof sprays and polishes. Shoe repairs are no problem either, just drop them in anytime and a specialist cobbler service will fix them up and have them back to you in no time. To celebrate their 10 year milestone, Imelda’s is offering a 25% discount on all stock on Friday, October 28 only, when you mention this ad. Make sure you pop in to see what’s in store … you’ll be sure to find something unique, exciting and appealing at Imelda’s on Maple. Shop 3 / 50 Maple Street, Maleny.

By popular demand, the Maleny Arts Council brings back to the Community Centre one of the most exciting artists in recent years, this time in a brand-new swinging show in cabaret style, performing at 2.00pm on Sunday, October 30. The Roaring Twenties features singer-actor Melissa Western with a hot band of Brisbane’s best musicians to re-create the authentic speakeasy of the twenties, and according to program director Peter Lavery, the audience will help create the atmosphere by dressing in theme and becoming the speakeasy crowd. “The hall will be set up with tables in cabaret style, and we expect people will invite their friends to make up a party and bring their own nibbles. The tables will suit six to eight, but if you want to come on your own, or just with a friend, we can find a table for you. “It will be more fun if the audience wears twenties costume, but we may have a few feather boas to lend to help you get in the mood if you feel that’s just a bridge too far! “There will be space for dancing so you can practise your Charleston and showcase it if the mood takes you, but no-one will worry if you just sit with a drink and enjoy others making a spectacle of themselves. The bar will be open for the whole of the show and you can purchase drinks and crisps,” said Peter. Melissa Western is backed by a live band on floor level, and the audience will want to sing

along with some of the songs of the great icons of the twenties, Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Josephine Baker, Bessie Smith and more. The backing band includes artist/compere Tnee Dyer, Greg Gottlieb on the double bass and Steve Powell drummer. All are Australian stars with experience on stages throughout UK and Europe; and Melissa Western earned a five-star rating from the critics at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival two years running. Peter Lavery suggests you book early as there is only one performance and it will be a sell-out. The committee hopes the audience will stay on after the show to talk to the stars and perhaps buy their CDs. Tickets are $30.00 and $25.00 (members) and are available at www.malenyartscouncil.com, Maleny Information Centre or book a table by ringing John on 5494 2584.

Guides do a good turn

Maleny Girl Guides held a Car Boot Sale at the Guide hut last Saturday. The proceeds from the Car Boot Sale will go to the CWA, towards their efforts to help the Farmers Relief Appeal. After running this Car Boot Sale, the Guides received their State Good Turn Badge. Recently a Breakfast was held at the Garden Café Maleny to present Long Service Badges to Leaders and Support Group Members. Assistant Leader Marilyn Large received her 10 year Service Badge, Sandra Graham Leader received her five year Service Badge and five year Support Group Service Badges were presented to Peta Fredericks and Veronica Wain.

Maleny Leader Nicole Miles with Marilyn Large, Sandra Graham and Support Group members Veronica Wain and Peta Fredericks after being presented with their awards Rebecca Dostal (five years as Leader) was unable to come. Congratulations and well done to all for giving up so much time to help our Guides. Guides will be selling tickets in their latest Christmas Kayak Raffle. Look for their sellers in front of IGA Maleny over the coming weeks.

Mooloolah Public Hall update Thanks to successful grant applications and the generosity of Sunshine Coast Council the hall is undergoing necessary repair work. Thanks to all concerned. Our community-owned hall should be the hub of this community. Elected volunteers manage the upkeep and general care of the hall but we do need community support through hiring the hall. The charges incurred help maintain and manage all upgrades and general maintenance.

Beerwah Writers Group

At our early October meeting, the Group confirmed that the release of our September issue of the magazine is now available at local newsagents in Beerwah, Landsborough, Glass House and Maleny. The format will be revised for the November release of ‘Five Minute Tales’. This meeting’s ‘refresher’ topic was ‘Dialogue’, which led to a discussion on accent, idiom and dialect and a decision to have next meeting devoted to ‘Careless Writing’, and how to avoid it. Fourteen short stories were presented mostly on the commercial or emotional aspects of Christmas including chaos, gifts, decorations, pine trees, chicken and geese plucking, a miracle and a Druid birth. Bob delivered a wicked tale of the Santa network. Ceridwyn

provided a story of how gnomes became part of everyday life. Paul read ‘No Keys’ - clever and comical with a twist in the tale. The suggested topics for the next meeting are – emotional or mystifying Christmas stories. We were reminded that more, longer (300 to 500 words) stories are still being written for our next anthology, due for publication early next year. Membership: there are still a few places for new members. Annual membership is $5.00. Opportunity knocks

Surf skills are a hit with students

Business feature Townsville based builder Paul Hurlock and his wife Cathy were originally shopping around for a shade cover for their caravan when Cathy came across information about the range of Transportable Shade Sheds products. Liking the product range, backup support and company direction, and realising that a great opportunity existed to become a reseller in their region, the couple decided to look to securing their future and submit an expression of interest to become resellers. Last month, Paul and Cathy became proud Saver6.com business partners and Transportable Shade Shed resellers with their new business venture: PCH Carports and Shade Sheds. “We saw a good business opportunity and thought let’s not let it go – let’s get on board and have a crack at it!” said Paul. Paul has worked in the construction industry for over 30 years and while all industries have ups and downs, in many parts of regional Australia the last few years have seen an economic downturn in many traditionally highly sustainable industries. Savvy small business owners are looking to new opportunities to sustain and build on their current lifestyles and provide future employment and revenue. As an established builder, Paul could see that by becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller he could have a viable offshoot to his current renovation and building business as well as providing a way of keeping his staff employed with product sales and installs. Also, as Townsville is a big defence industry town, Paul could see huge potential in marketing the larger range of Transportable Shade Shed products such as their Quick Shade and Dangerous Storage Goods products. “I feel that Transportable Shade Sheds is a business that I can really get into and spend a solid three to five years building up. As building projects have gradually slowed down up here, the sheds are a great practical product that are very well priced with a huge market for where we are – so I see us putting in the work and making some good future returns,” explains Paul. As many people are looking into more frugal options in living, Paul sees opportunity in the affordable pricing of Transportable Shade Sheds coupled with their versatility and need. With the tropical climate in Townsville, shade covering is a product well used in the regional area, and the 100% Australian made and manufactured products also sit well with customers. “I just want to make a comfortable living and retire a little earlier. At the moment our new business will help carry through our core business until we can build it up to a fully sustainable level. Like our construction business, our aim as resellers is to have repeat customers which we hope will keep coming back for these great products.” If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Townsville area please contact Paul via social media or on 0407 637 653. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.

Please call Paul Hurlock, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

OCTOBER 26 2016

This week Mooloolah State School kicked off its Surf Skills Program for students in Year 5 and 6. The students were excited to hit the beach and learn valuable skills about Surf Life Saving and the beach. The program is part of the school curriculum and is run in conjunction with Alexander Headland Surf Life Saving Club. The students will do basic drills such as flag runs, reading the waves, board rides, beach safety and swimming skills. This will include games and activities that use both physical and cognitive skills for the children to become confident around surf and our beaches. These activities and skills allows the students to try new things and possibly even join a Surf Life Saving Club and become a Nipper. When the students of Mooloolah State School returned on the bus they all had big smiles on their faces and were busy talking to other students and parents about their day. They can’t wait to go again next week. Who knows with programs like this and many beaches on the coast, Mooloolah State School may have a future Iron man or woman amongst their students?

Peachester Prep Open days Two of our 2017 Prep students could not wait to try on their big sister’s school uniforms and wear them to the Peachester State School’s series of three information mornings. On Wednesday, October 19 the Preps had a great day exploring classroom activities and the final open day Wednesday, November 2 will be exploring outdoor activities and gaining a sense of confidence in their new surrounds. The Prep year at Peachester State School maintains a very strong emphasis on the benefits of play-based learning and building social skills. Peachester State School follows the Jolly-Phonics reading program. This involves learning ‘actions’ to memorise and practice sounds and letter combinations and is a great learning foundation for our future readers. The success of this program was noted in this year’s Naplan data where PSS outperformed the state and nation in Reading and Grammar and Punctuation in Years 3 and 5. Our Prep teachers, Leon Owen and Carol Newitt emphasise that the first year at school is such an important one for learning resilience and many games and activities are planned around improving the children’s confidence and resilience in understanding new social situations. Please call the school for enquiries and a school information pack if your child is considering joining our unique small school in 2017. Reading buddies Contributed by Deb Ives During Terms 2 and 3 a handful of enthusiastic Year 1 and 2 students from Beerwah Primary School have taken part in a new initiative called Reading Buddies. Teachers selected students within their classes who they believed would benefit from additional reading and sight word exposure. Year 6 students put forward an expression of interest to their teachers to act as mentors to the younger students. This process proved to provide benefits for all students involved. The Year 6 students for taking on a role of leadership with responsibility were congratulated for their compassion and commitment. Four days each week for a period of five weeks, the Year 6 mentor assisted their ‘buddy’ through encouraging discussions and building confidence to assist them as they continue their reading journey. Their buddy reading didn't end when the words on a page had been read, ongoing questioning to determine understanding was also a new skill the Year 6's learnt. The results in achievement for these Year 1 and 2 students were very encouraging with increased enthusiasm toward reading and the positive attitude they have of themselves as a reader.

Prepared and safe students Contributed by Katrina De Clara Beerburrum students in Years 3 to 6 recently took part in a presentation from the Sunshine Coast Council Disaster Management team about being prepared for the upcoming storm season. The students took away some important tips to share with their family and how easy it is to be prepared for a natural emergency. “Making sure you have some canned food in the pantry and batteries for your torch and a radio to listen out for weather updates is really important,” said Abby from Year 3. The school students from Prep to Year 6 were also lucky enough to listen to a volunteer presenter from the SEAT program. This program raises awareness in young people of how to stay safe, for life. The program also gives insight into how people with paraplegia or quadriplegia do everyday things. Students learnt how the spine and spinal cord work. The presentation highlighted the dangers of peer pressure, as well as key safety messages including; the importance of wearing a helmet, checking the water before jumping in, playing sport safely, making good choices while out Abby is all ready for with friends and wearing a seatbelt to name a storm season few.

Spreading the word about the good groundcovers One of the greatest threats to our native bushland is invasion by exotic garden plants that can escape from your backyard and spread far and wide. Exotic groundcover plants such as Syngonium, Singapore Daisy, Inch Plant, Barleria, Honeysuckle, and Tradescantia’s (and unfortunately many more) might well be tough colourful garden groundcovers, but all are exotic, highly invasive and destructive. But there is a better alternative to these exotic groundcover weeds and that’s our local native groundcovers. These plants that have evolved in our own area, provide habitat for local wildlife, are vital components of our local bushland and look great too. A win, win for all concerned! At Forest Heart we’re bringing into cultivation and stocking a growing (pardon the pun) range of local native groundcovers that includes Native Plumbago, Native Mint’s, Sunray’s, Yellow Buttons, Blue Harebells, Koala Bells, Fan flowers, Goodenias, Hibbertias, Pink Tongue, Paper Daisies, Lobelias, Flax lilies, Lomandras, Forest Hounds tooth, Kangaroo Grass, Poa, Native Sarsaparilla, Midyim, Pollia, Brookweed, Maidenhair Ferns, Rasp Ferns and more. Add to this mix some other great Australian native groundcovers including Casuarina Cousin It, Grevilleas, Brachyscome’s and an ever-growing range and there’s plenty of choice for planting native plants in your garden. Come and check out our great range of local groundcovers, the great prices and advice at Forest Heart and help preserve our local native plants and create a beautiful nature refuge in your backyard.

Environment The private life of echidnas Little-known habits of the iconic native animal illustrated on Australia’s five cent coin have been unveiled in new research led by the University of the Sunshine Coast. A study led by USC Lecturer in Animal Ecophysiology Dr Christofer Clemente has offered new clues to the movement habits of the Photography by short-beaked echidna. Dr Clemente said the team Dr Christine Cooper was amazed at the scale of each echidna’s soil turnover, given that most echidnas weighed under five kilograms. “If you have 12 echidnas, they are moving the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool of dirt a year,” he said. “They spend about 10% of their day digging. “We knew that burrowing echidnas had a number of positive benefits for the ecosystem, by releasing nutrients and reducing erosion, but what no-one knew was the amount that echidnas were digging. “Soil aeration is absolutely critical to the overall environment, by releasing nutrients and reducing erosion and run off, and this is the first time we’ve discovered just how much the humble echidna is contributing to that.” As the most widespread Australian mammal after the house mouse, echidnas were a keystone species in ensuring the survival of plants and animals across the continent. “These guys live in every single habitat, from deserts to the forests of Tasmania and all the way to the tropical North,” he said. “It means that their behaviour is having a huge impact.” “Australia used to have a lot of animals that dug up soil, like bilbies and bandicoots, but we’ve lost almost all of them except for echidnas. “It’s almost like these animals are the last line of defence for Australia’s ecosystem health.” Dr Clemente said the accelerometers, which were created by University of Queensland engineers, had acted as ‘FitBits for echidnas’. “If we followed an echidna around all day, it wouldn’t behave naturally, so we glued accelerometers, GPS devices, and temperature and light loggers to their spines and let them go,” he said. “It was a little bundle about the size of a watch, and it gave us this private peek into the life of an echidna. “The challenge came in recapturing the echidnas, because it turns out they don’t like to be caught a second time. They would hear you coming and start running through thick bush, so we spent a lot of time with our heads in caves or tree hollows.”

with Sue Tanner On Saturday, October 15 the Friends of Mary Cairnross Association held their AGM, in the Verandah Room of the Community Centre. This is a good room but we’re hoping our next meeting in January will be in our new building. Apparently construction is ahead of expectations and we are being given Christmas as a likely completion time. Elections were held of course, I am still president (thank you for the vote of confidence) and Kerri Leddin stays on as treasurer. Thank you to outgoing secretary Gretchen Evans and welcome Rose Harmon who has stepped in for the next year. Welcome also to vicepresident Owen Sharwood – we are compiling a list of jobs for you Owen. There were two key achievements in 2016. First was the donation of $30,000 to the ‘Dusk to Dawn’ installation in the new Discovery Centre – these funds will finance the audio visual components of this display. Second was the establishment of the Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Honors Scholarship at the University of the Sunshine Coast. It was interesting to attend a function at USC last month for sponsors and recipients and to hear what a huge difference all the prizes, bursaries and scholarships make to these students’ lives. The school holidays were a busy time again for our desk vollies and the beautiful weekend weather is bringing families to barbecue, picnic and walk in our wonderful patch of rainforest. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Mary Cairncross and helping to care for the forest, please phone Rose 5429 6222. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Living - Arts Inigo Jones’ Obi Obi Creek artwork donated to Sunshine Coast Art Collection The family of renowned long-range weather forecaster Inigo Jones has donated an oil painting by the amateur artist to the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.

Mr Jones moved from England with his parents in the 1890s to a farm called Crohamhurst in the Glass House Mountains where he built an observatory, and later became a full-time weather forecaster. Arts and Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski thanked the family for their generous donation, describing it as a celebration of the weather forecaster’s love of the region and painting. Cr Baberowski said the painting also provided an important link to the associated story about the need and increasing reliance on accurate longrange weather forecasting by Australian farmers. “This beautiful painting ‘Obi Obi Creek’ by Inigo Jones, will be enjoyed by the community thanks to the generosity of the Inigo Jones family,” he said. “It represents the work and thinking of a man who made an important and provocative contribution to the history and development of long-range weather forecasting as an emerging science and helped to elevate understanding of its importance to the farming community. “The Sunshine Coast Art Collection has been curated by council over many years and aims to encourage enjoyment and awareness of the visual arts while supporting our creative arts community. “It also speaks to the region’s heritage and the people who shaped it.

“The artworks acquired for this special collection are housed on the walls of council and public buildings such as council chambers, libraries and entertainment venues.” Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries were vibrant community hubs that brought people together for many reasons. “Our libraries support and promote our cultural diversity by showcasing vibrant and stimulating collections, exhibitions and events that inspire appreciation of the region’s past, present and future,” Cr McKay said. “Given its proximity to the site of the Obi Obi Creek, Maleny Library is the ideal location for the unveiling and display of the beautifully restored ‘Obi Obi Creek’ artwork painted in 1931. “I was interested to learn that in addition to making a name for himself in long-range weather forecasting, Inigo’s pastimes included painting in his beloved library, reading and music. “On behalf of council, it is such an honour to welcome the family of Inigo Jones to Maleny Library today and we thank them for this beautiful artwork. “Visitors to Maleny Library will also be fascinated by the items displayed in the heritage levy funded Museum Box of Inigo's weather forecasting implements and historical information provided by the Peachester History Committee Inc. “These heritage items, displayed as a mini pop-up exhibition, provide an insight into this fascinating local identity who has been referred to as a weather prophet.” Some objects on display as a part of the museum box include an early telescope, believed to have been brought to Crohamhurst by the Jones family in 1892, Crohamhurst Observatory Papers from 1935 and 1939, a copy of one of Inigo Jones’ long-range forecast charts and a desk set, including ink stand, inkwells, quills, and visiting cards. The artwork and historical display will be on show at Maleny Library until November 21. It will then move to Beerwah Library from November 22 until December 19. The artwork only will also be displayed at Kenilworth Library from December 20 until January 17. See page 30 for photos.

Christmas preparations at Beerwah Picture Framing! Seb Messina at Beerwah Picture Framing is busy preparing for Christmas 2016. Offering unique and personalised gift ideas, Seb is confident he can assist to provide the perfect gift solution for this coming holiday season. After seeking a tree change with wife Mary and moving to Beerwah last year, professional photographer and framer Seb established Beerwah Picture Framing in February of this year. So far response to his bespoke framing and photo restoration business has been excellent. Seb has extensive industry knowledge. The creative skills that stood him in good stead as a photographer also impress his framing customers. He has an ‘eye for colour’ and the ability to incorporate customers’ photos, paintings, and tapestries or cross stitches with mat and frame selections that really make the art sing. With the end of year in sight Seb has cast his mind to how he can assist his customers with their Christmas shopping and he has come up with some innovative ideas. Naturally, picture framing is his first thought and there are many ways that he can transform treasured pieces into a beautiful gift. Seb has had many customers spiriting a football jersey, canvas painting, art photograph, sports medal or presentation out of the home - to have it beautifully framed for their partner as a Christmas or birthday present. That special photograph of the children can make a great gift for grandparents. The photo can be brought into Seb as a finished print ready to frame or it can be printed by Beerwah Picture Framing on a variety of quality photo papers.

to Christmas. Being mindful that many people have Saturday off work, from October 15 Seb is going to start opening on Saturday morning from 8.00am to 11.30am, giving his customers the opportunity to call into his 3 Bridget Court framing studio without the need for a prior appointment. For your free consultation and quotation call Seb at Beerwah Picture Framing to make an appointment.

Everyone knows that grandparents can never have too many photos of their beloved grandchildren. Photo restoration is a specialised service provided by Beerwah Picture Framing that can also be a wonderful Christmas gift. That old family photograph or picture of a special ancestor can be restored by Seb and printed on appropriate photo media. Seb is very sensitive to the need for the printing and framing to be in sync with the image being framed to achieve that authentic balance and quality. Holidays in places like Bali, Vietnam, Paris or South America often result in a fashionable canvas painting being stored in a cupboard, waiting to be stretched and hung to adorn a living room or bedroom wall. If you have one, why not bring it into Beerwah Picture Framing to have it expertly stretched and framed? Once again this can make a fantastic personalised Christmas gift. Seb and Mary have recently completed a three state road trip through central Australia and have a beautiful selection of indigenous art for sale. They have been careful to choose a variety of colours and compositions that will lift and enhance any home. Of course Seb will work with the purchaser to pick a stretch and frame style that will look fantastic on your wall or make a gift for someone special. A point to note is that picture framing has a turnaround time of several weeks so it is a good idea to get the job into Beerwah Picture Framing for an assessment and a free quote as soon as possible. Seb will always try to help out even at the last minute but the choices of frames and matboards will be reduced as the time gets closer

Birkdale School Centenary

Sunday, November 27, 2016 marks 100 years to the day since the schools’ doors, or more precisely, tent flaps first opened and they’re having a party. There’ll be classroom presentations involving history and memorabilia, food stalls, students’ concerts, rides and a vintage car display, all followed by an evening fireworks display. Excitement is also building over the opening of the 1988 time capsule and the cutting of the centenary celebration cake which will be part of the official opening. The school is particularly keen to welcome teachers, staff and students to a day of reunions, memories, celebrations and fun. For more information contact John Bullion on 3207 5690 or Helen Brown on 0437 737 860 or go to the school website https://birkdaless.eq.edu.au/Pages/default.aspx

Anti-everything

The current Green/Labor state government continues the ideological choking of our rural communities. Queensland’s high value agricultural project permits have been reduced to a trickle. These are the progressive, high employment, cutting edge projects that this state needs. Forty-five projects were approved in 2015 and only one this year: a 98% drop! The current Green/Labor government continues to encourage the ‘anti-everything’ Greens and the continual ‘Green’ court actions that are holding up billions of dollars of state development and thousands of rural jobs. Our state government should be governing for us all, not just pandering to the Green nonsense that will cripple our rural jobs, our food security, and our overall lifestyles. Greg Newton Balmoral Ridge

World Polio Day this week – October 24

In 1985, at a time when the world was experiencing 1,000 cases of polio per day, Rotary launched a global initiative – PolioPlus - to eradicate polio through the mass vaccination of children. Since then, Rotarians and their communities worldwide have raised US $1.6 billion and contributed countless volunteer hours to immunise more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. Rotary has also encouraged governments, the World Health Organisation and the private sector to get on board and support Polio Plus to the tune of US $7.2 billion. The results are awesome - a 99.9% reduction of polio cases with less than 75 confirmed last year, however the war on polio is not won, until it is totally eradicated. This is why Rotarians worldwide will continue to donate their time and money until it is finally killed off.

So, as we acknowledge World Polio Day this week, Rotary clubs worldwide will continue to support this effort and for every dollar that Rotary raises, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is matching with $2.00. We are that close to eradicating polio from the world. Jeff Cornfoot Rotary Club of Maleny

Urgent action required

I am a grandfather of a child that attends the Landsborough Community Kindergarten and have major concerns over the safety of parents and children crossing the busy Maleny Road, Landsborough. This issue has been raised with the Kindergarten’s Director as well as our local MP’s. It was also recently raised at a committee meeting with representatives from Transport and Main Roads and Police where the outcome was to not reduce the speed at this time. I have personally witnessed the near miss of a mum with her little girl narrowly avoiding getting hit by a car. I would like to see a pedestrian crossing installed or alternatively reducing speed limits from 60km/hr to 40km/hr from both east and west traffic. Too many near misses have occurred and I wouldn’t like to hear of a fatality in the area. Trevor Grant Buderim

Scam alert

I have recently had an experience with a scammer claiming to be from APIA trying to talk about a car accident, telling me that a 3rd party has hit my car and my personal injury claim has been approved and asking for my personal details. I did some research online and discovered that the scam has been doing the rounds in WA and also NSW. I am particularly concerned that they will be targeting older people and wanted to raise awareness. Colleen Mullins Maleny

Principles of democracy?

I wonder why your correspondent, GC&M News, October 19, considers it so important to convince me that his opinion on the possible hazards of low strength emissions from NBN towers is the best informed. I am satisfied with our enquiries and I do not believe that birds and animals will be harmed, unless one sadly collides with a tower. The emissions must comply with safety regulations so we are not afraid that there would be any danger to ourselves or the other residents in this street, but, that is for them to decide. The statement that I raise opposition to legitimate objections is inaccurate. What I question is the legitimacy of opposition by several persons who are far removed from the proposed site. If the majority of nearby residents agree with the

proposed site of a tower, why should objectors from 10 or more kilometres away, who would not be affected, be able to overturn the proposal. Does this meet the principles of democracy? The selective claims re the cause of increased costs, as stated by the writer, turn a blind eye on the exorbitant costs burdening various businesses and governments that are brought about by persistent, organised opposition to proposed infrastructure improvements. I believe that organised obstruction to any project, where forward planning is repeatedly interrupted, would result in the addition of crippling expenses and I deplore this disruption. Our country needs cost effective delivery of infrastructure and efficient delivery of services for the many needs of our society. Olive Hockings Maleny

Railway upgrade issues

Department of Transport and Main Roads have just completed another inadequate presentation relating to their current proposal for elimination of the Landsborough rail crossing. The following comments are provided for consideration by local people and users of the crossing: • It was not a proposal for Landsborough relating to both rail crossings • There will still be uncertainty for property owners near to the Gympie Street North crossing and the school • There were no elevations or long sections to illustrate the size of the earthworks and height of the bridges (about nine metres) • There were no 3D illustrations showing the impact of the proposal on the Landsborough streetscape and nearby properties • Owners of properties likely to be resumed are the fortunate ones when compared to those owners next to the proposal • The layout shown for the Western end of the proposal was a ‘T’ intersection where the Eastern side was a roundabout • No plans for access to shops along the Landsborough Maleny Road frontage were shown • Plans for the carpark and access to it were not shown and this will also affect many properties DTMR has again failed to provide a true picture about their proposal so that informed comment can be made. Jim Straker Maleny

It’s so easy to grow your business with GC&M News! I have been advertising in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for nearly five years now. What I love about the paper is the ease of advertising; changes can be made without a hassle. Businesses have such little time, but it's never a problem for the girls to whip up an ad. What attracted me to the paper was the very friendly, approachable staff. It’s a small local business too, which means you are dealing directly with them. They also keep you up to date on any up and coming advertising events etc. that your business may be interested in.

I find it very cost effective as well. I have advertised elsewhere but have never had the same response rate. I feel without the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News my business would have not grown as quickly as it has. I also love to sit down with a coffee (when I get the chance ) and have a read myself.

From the churches Jill Schefe - Glasshouse Country Lutheran Church On October 31 each year, the Lutheran Church celebrates the festival of the Reformation. The Reformation was not about forming new churches. Its purpose was to set the Church free from the shackles of Rome. The Gospel of God’s free grace in Jesus Christ was given back to the people. The four great principles which Martin Luther highlighted in the Reformation still stand today as the guiding star for all Christian denominations. CHRIST ALONE - stands at the heart and kernel of our spiritual life. Not only does Christ’s example as a life of servanthood on earth enable us to lead God-pleasing lives, but His self-sacrifice on the Cross and His resurrection enable us to look beyond death to eternal life. FAITH ALONE - enables us to take hold of all the promises that Christ offers us in His Word. The key sentence of the Reformation was Luther’s statement: ‘We are beggars and that is the truth.’ A beggar has nothing to offer. his hands. As God’s people we too are spiritually impoverished. The gift of faith enables us to reach out to Jesus and believe that He will fulfil our needs. GRACE ALONE - Salvation is a free gift. It is all courtesy of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. We no longer have to contribute in any way to our eternal life. No more good works to earn our salvation. It is all now totally free on account of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. WORD ALONE - St John reminds us that which we have written in the Scriptures is adequate for our salvation. Nothing more and nothing less. Luther again reminded us that the Scriptures for the Old and New Testaments are the ‘swaddling clothes in which we find the Christ Child.’ We thank and praise God for the dialogue and fellowship that continues to be practised among the Churches of the Sunshine Coast hinterland still today. The central message is still focussed on Jesus Christ and that will never change.

Jobs for the yard in November • Once your spring flowering bulbs – such as jonquils, daffodils and iris – have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry dark place. • Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow. • The coming rains and warmer temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them, or use a pyrethrum or bacteria based spray. • Time to prune your azaleas and dead-head roses to encourage continual flowering. • Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with Confidor. • Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up old rotten fruits and using a splash bait, such as Eco-Naturalure. • Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose. Vegetables Plant celery, asian greens, chilli, eggplant, silver beet, capsicum, rhubarb, choko, lettuce, cucumber, squash, beans, sweet corn, sweet potato, radish, tomato, zucchini, carrot, okra, pumpkin, spring onion, rockmelon and watermelon. Flowers Plant sunflower, amaranthus, celosia, gomphrena, marigold, petunia, impatiens, portulaca, salvia, zinnia, ageratum, coleus, aster, cockscomb, californian poppy, begonia, cosmos, torenia and dahlia.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails had a bye. The Whistlers played at Caloundra against Hot Chillies. It was windy and we all had to think how to get the wind to our side. We had a fun and good game, some really long rallies that we had to have little break before the next point. We were only few games short but enjoyed good weather and good company. Score was 38-40 games, 4 sets each. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats were at home to top team Peregian Parakeets. It’s always a tough and close match against this team. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett fought hard but were unable to bring it home. The score was 3-5 sets, 34-43 games. Social tennis Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

Cricket match ends in nail biting tie

Glasshouse vs. Caboolture U13s Cricket Round 4 played at Glasshouse October 22. Glasshouse Captain J Swanson won the toss and elected to field. Caboolture started their innings batting strongly to reach 1/88 in the 17th over, then Glasshouse bowler C Byford made an impressive 6/3 during the 18th, 20th and 22nd overs (assisted by one catch and two stumpings by wk C McAllister) leaving Caboolture 9/126 at the end of the 30th over. M Dellit 33* P Sutton 32* Glasshouse: H McAllister 1/7 B Baartz 1/10 Glasshouse innings ran at a steadier pace reaching 4/122 in the 29th, with the outcome of the game to be decided in the last over. Four more runs were made, evening up the scores - the excitement was building as parents and players eagerly watched the last two balls - the first passed through safely to the keeper, the second was hit and the batters ran, the ball was well fielded and resulted in a run-out leaving Glasshouse tied on 5/126. C Byford 33* R Schulz 22 J Swanson 15 (Caboolture: L Dawes 2/5). Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic game!

Track and Field Championship

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, October 18 and 19, Tamara Taripo attended the 10 - 12 Track and Field State Championships at QSAC in Brisbane. Tamara competed in the U11 Discus and Shotput. She placed third in both events and has now been invited to attend the Australian School Sport 10 - 12 years Track and Field Championships held in Sydney next month. Tamara is in Year 6 and is a student at Glasshouse Mountains State School.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen There were only six players Tuesday, hence Triples were played. The first game resulted in an 11 all draw but the second game went to Relma Godfrey, Miles Allen and Dennis Kyling 13 shots to nine, to give them a most fortuitous margin of +4 which then was drawn for the $200.00 Jackpot. Well done Relma, Miles and Dennis. Wednesday evening the Touchers went to David Coffey, Tom Ukola and Heather Loynes but no other results were recorded. Friday, The Scroungers Final was played, resulting in a win for Miles Allen over Rob Norris and Allan Cook. The player with the most improved handicap was Miles Allen who had his handicap reduced by 20 shots over the course of the competition. The player with the highest base score for the competition was Doug McGufficke with 1097 shots. None of the Sponsors’ Prize winners were present to claim their prizes and the Money Board winner was Curley Petersen which caused some chagrin to another member who shall remain nameless. The Scott Fawkes Memorial Triples was well patronised Friday evening with 12 teams participating. The winners with a score of +12 were Mo Lawrence, Roy Gesch and the player of the week, Miles Allen. The draw for individual prizes went to:- Lead Mo Lawrence, Second - Melita Gesch and Skip - of course it had to be, Miles Allen. The Money Board went to Linda Fawkes and the Raffle to Portia Gesch. It was a most enjoyable evening and a profitable one for the Club. Many thanks to Les and Linda for their generous, much appreciated sponsorship of the event. You will have noticed the installation of the new shade cloth at the entrance end of the green if you have been at the Club recently. Saturday morning Warwick Moody, Don Ginns and David Burgess were busy putting the final touches to this much-needed addition. Many thanks for their efforts. This week is a busy one which kicked off with the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, Social Bowls Wednesday evening and Scroungers Friday. Finally, another reminder about Christmas there will be dinner and Presentation Night, on Friday, December 2. Bookings at the Club, cost will be $45.00 a head, catering by the Spitroast Company.

Hearing better now

Adoring wife

“Sugar why don’t you sit down by the table and we’ll start supper,” said Dorothy to her husband of 50 years. “Sure thing,” said her husband settling himself down. “Now darling, would you like the soup first or the salad?” questioned Dorothy. “Umm I guess I’ll take the soup,” he responded. After a whole meal of one endearing term after another, their guest Bob couldn’t contain his curiosity any longer. Bob snuck into the kitchen and asked, “Dorothy do you always talk to your husband like that?” “Bob, I’ll be honest with you,” Dorothy replied. “It’s been five years now, I just can’t remember his name, and I am just too embarrassed to ask him!”

An elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his hearing back to full strength. After a few weeks, the man came back to make sure the new equipment was working properly, which it was. The hearing specialist said, “it all seems perfect. Your family should be delighted you can hear everything now.” “Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit quietly, listening carefully. I’ve changed my will four times.” Contributed by Kevvy Bear from Elimbah

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 With the planets being the Sun and Mercury, all done up in your intense, focused, obsessive sign, everything urges you to get down to business and research some financial facts. If you have been thinking about taking on a new responsibility, you will need to stick to the best way to do it. Sweeping changes in your appearance. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Your social life picks up and you and your friends give each other encouragement to have joyful occasions. You might do something different like all attending a cricket match! Under strong planetary aspects, minor accidents can happen so proceed with caution. New Moon at month’s end is a helpful influence for confidential discussions. CAPRICORN December – 23 January 19 You may find tremendous explosive pressures building up for you this weekend! To avoid any major outburst that could have lasting repercussions on an intimate relationship, choose to walk away and keep walking until you are calm again. When your daydreaming becomes allconsuming, ask a friend for honest opinions now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 20 The New Moon on the last day of October is in the powerful sign of Scorpio. You will instinctively know that there is a subtle, and deep seated change, coming your way over the next few months. It may be connected to business travel and communications. Be receptive to large concepts and some clients will test your ability.

8

CANCER June 22 – July 22 With Venus and Neptune together, they urge you to live in the moment, especially with someone delightful! The United States of America was born under your sign and so this weekend with the new Moon in Scorpio all ‘Cancerians’ may see angry people parading around you. See if you can watch a good movie or soccer match! LEO July 23 – August 22 This could be a time of decision and the need for truth in some family or home matter. Anyway, under the New Moon on the weekend, being in Scorpio, the pressure is on and you may feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you. This week then could see loads of transformations regarding home and family. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week sees you with an impulsive Mars and a startling Uranus energy bringing to you events and circumstances of the most unexpected kind. No need to worry as surprises can be great fun. This New Moon in Scorpio for the weekend will plant a seed of deep understanding so ask any questions at this time. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Perhaps there is a family that will suddenly move and have the potential to disturb you. This week with the New Moon in Scorpio a relationship responsibility needs review and attention. You will need to think about a goal for the future. Some good news from the planet Jupiter, that sees you come out ahead financially now.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 A rather nice sounding name is ‘super New Moon’. This is because of the closeness of that celestial body to this planet and of course the effect it has on most Pisceans. The weekend will temporarily endow you with a new super power, that means the ability to understand anyone’s true motives! You see through people now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Support is there this week for making decisions and receiving answers. Various talks are centred on serious subjects. The New Moon on the weekend will be in Scorpio and makes that weekend ideal for you to be alone with your thoughts. You have shrewd business and personal insights into people and situations. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 The New Moon this weekend will be in the mysterious Scorpio sign. It also teams up with drifty dreamy Neptune, and that accentuates your eating desires. If you have not yet allowed yourself the treat of dressing up, then this is the weekend to disguise yourself and release your inner child! Be social at local clubs. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This is a good week for you to jump at the chance to have a meeting to resolve problems. A strategic approach is precisely what will be needed to redirect your energies this weekend. This is because any relationship can turn serious or reach a decision point under the New Moon with Scorpion-like energies. You may see a new job!
