ast week I caught up with Councillor Baberowski at the new entrance to Turner Park in Beerwah and the area is looking great. While I was chatting to him I asked why the Tower Green with the rock sculptures in Simpson Street has been taped off recently, and it is good news – they were completing the lighting of the area. We have a photo on page 5 and it shows how dramatic the area now looks at night, with the lighting throwing the focus on the rock sculptures, featured in the area. The styling of the main street has also now been incorporated into Turner Park with its new entry statement constructed out of metal and Glass House stone which has been planted up with a flowering vine to grow over the metal frame. In front, is some lovely timber seating which will make a great spot for local workers to get outside, pause and have their lunch. As well it includes three new picnic tables which will all eventually have plenty of shade to enjoy. And lastly, council are finally telling locals and visitors where to go, or more to the point how to get around Beerwah, with their new signage along Simpson and into Turner Street.

Kay Farrell from the Sunshine Girls would like to pass on the heartfelt thanks from the farmers and their families in Western Queensland who benefitted from the generously donated ‘pamper boxes’ that were sent out to the drought affected region. Sunshine Coast residents donated an incredible 1500 brightly wrapped and thoughtfully filled boxes through the Sunshine Girls initiative. These shoeboxes filled with little luxuries went a long way to help lift the spirits of woman on the land who have struggled in the face of one of the worst droughts in recent history. The pamper boxes were sent out to two key locations; Winton and Charleville and the response has already been extremely positive. CEO of the Buy a Bale Campaign and Give Back International, Charles Alder sent through a letter of thanks recently that stated; ‘We would like to pass on our thanks for all the time and effort that the Sunshine Girls and the people of the Sunshine Coast have put into preparing pamper boxes for those suffering through the drought. We have already received very positive feedback on your efforts and cannot

Pamper packs being delivered in Winton thank you enough for thinking about our farmers and their families.’ A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to put together a box as well as the local businesses that acted as collection points for drop offs. Each and every one of those boxes reached someone whose lives needed a little brightening up and no doubt these small heartfelt gestures have made a meaningful difference to those on the land.

Youth outdoor kitchen for Maleny Dozens of local youth struggling with mental health issues, physical disabilities and social isolation are set to benefit from a $9,800 funding boost awarded to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

THINKING OF

SELLING? Contact mike@scremail.com

The contribution from Slater and Gordon Lawyers’ Community Fund will go towards the construction of a Youth Outdoor Kitchen. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Project Co-ordinator Josie Coco said the grant will assist our homeless youth, which is a becoming a serious local issue. “We’re seeing more and more homeless young people come through the Neighbourhood Centre for emergency assistance,” Ms Coco said. “Family breakdowns, marginalisation and drug and alcohol problems, are increasingly forcing local teenagers out onto the street at a critical time in their development.” “The Outdoor Kitchen will not only provide a place for at-risk youth to hang out and have something to eat, it will also help bridge the gap between education and employment, by creating an opportunity for them to learn new skills,” she said. “We’re also partnering with local businesses to train the youth community, so if a position comes up they have a group of potential local employees who are trained up and ready to go.” “We couldn’t have done this without the support of Slater and Gordon’s Community Fund and the grant will go a long way to reducing hardship and fostering resilience.” Slater and Gordon Queensland General Manager Karen Simpson said it’s a great initiative. "These young people are at a critical point in their lives and a bit of support now can go a long way in helping them realise their potential," she said. The Youth Outdoor Kitchen will include a covered outdoor kitchen with a sustainable wood-fired cob oven, a food preparation area, a sink and bench seating. It is estimated at least 30 young people will use the kitchen daily, with an estimated annual patronage of more than 2,000.

Upgrade transforms Beerwah’s Turner Park The first stage of an upgrade to Beerwah’s civic heart is complete, with a new entry plaza and arbour, custom-design seating walls, picnic tables under shade trees and new gardens transforming Turner Park. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Sunshine Coast Council upgrade improved access to the park and would increase its profile in Beerwah. “Turner Park has been Beerwah’s hidden gem for too long and this new entry creates a proper link to our award winning transformed town centre,” Cr Baberowski said. “The new additions to Turner Park and the custom designs in Simpson Street and Beerwah

Tower Green reflect Beerwah’s natural history and its modern country town character. Along with the work completed in Turner Park the Tower Green in Simpson Street has also had the lighting installed. “The entry plaza also features a bonus sculpted boulder by local Peachester artist Hew Chee Fong – who created the feature boulders in Beerwah Tower Green – which further connects Turner Park to the town centre. “Council is now working on the concept design of stage two, which is scheduled to start during the 2016/17 financial year. “The proposed second stage of work will include play equipment upgrades, improved paths, seating and gardens.”

Heat on to protect our wildlife With the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) now having officially applied to clear 24 ha of koala habitat along Steve Irwin Way, representatives from koala groups converged outside the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection offices in Brisbane. A group comprised of Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest, Queensland Koala Crusaders and Moreton Bay Koala Rescue, raised a huge banner outside before heading upstairs with ‘Ormiston’ the Koala delivered a giant envelope full of hundreds of signed protest postcards to the staff of Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles. The postcards, signed by Sunshine Coast residents who oppose the project, have photographs donated by nature photographers and conservationists and present a series of eight different arguments to protect the forest from development. According to campaigner Mariko McConnell, who opposes the location of the planned Bruce Highway / Caloundra Road interchange, many people in the hinterland are still unaware of this project, and the Environment Minister is still under the impression that it is just a degraded logging area. “With the formal application to revoke this 24 ha of state forest now in progress, we need both parties – our Environment Minister, who must decide whether to allow it to be cleared, and the wider community, whose children stand to lose this precious amenity – to know about it and to understand just how valuable the forest is,” said Mariko.

“Putting aside the long list of threatened species which live there, people who walk through it are absolutely stunned by its beauty and grandeur. “Sadly, the worst thing about this interchange is that it is under-designed. We stand to lose a huge chunk of this beautiful forest for something that will cause as many problems as it solves. “We need TMR to listen to the community and go back to the drawing board with a completely new set of parameters that addresses business and residential concerns and includes steering clear of the forest.” Mariko disputes the TMR assertions that the land clearing will not contribute to koala species decline due to their own claims that the existing population is low. “Recorded sightings and anecdotal evidence show that there used to be more koalas in there, with numbers dropping off after Steve Irwin Way was widened without wildlife fences being put in place,” Mariko explained. "This raises a question of morality … should TMR's argument be allowed to carry any weight when they themselves are responsible for the low population?" Concurrently, Ray Chambers of Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue met personally with the Environment Minister to discuss wildlife legislation. Ray came straight to the meeting from the front line. He spent his weekend and morning on koala rescues and stated that the new Moreton Bay train line alone has killed 300 koalas. "The vegetation lost is too great on every TMR project," said Ray.

Take back the power with Battery Storage Why? … due to the fact that households are not getting paid fairly for their exports of solar electricity back into the grid. In Queensland and parts of NSW, any payments are voluntary. Even where retailers are offering $0.06 per kWh, they are then selling those same electrons to the solar household’s neighbours for as much as $0.48 per kWh. If that household is on peak rates, someone is making money … and it’s not the solar households! Battery storage can be the solution. When the levelised cost of solar PV plus battery storage falls below the evening peak price, then batteries will appear in garages and basements all over Australia. (from Reneweconomy by Giles Parkinson)

Here’s what the locals say … David and Christine of Glass House ran their air-con with their battery storage with no problems.

Peachester School Fun Day coming soon

Ormiston the Koala (courtesy of Moreton Bay Koala Rescue) and Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group member / campaigner Wayne Reid outside the Ministerial offices "Animal losses will always be big … the Cooroy Bruce Highway project is showing this. “This was said before TMR started, but like every other time they never listen. Now koalas are being killed there. “Forest Glen is another big koala kill zone and there is no wildlife fencing as we have asked for in the past,” he said. The coalition of groups hoped that raising a banner in the Brisbane CBD and having Ormiston hand-deliver the signed postcards, in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue's meeting with Steven Miles, will help to raise awareness. The Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group will meet with TMR on the August 20. Anyone with concerns is invited to contact the group via their website: www.is.gd/savetheforest

Be bushfire ready – Fire Danger Rating Contributed by Gavin Stewart Volunteer Community Educator The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is an early indicator of potential danger and should act as your first trigger for action. The higher the rating the greater the need for you to act. The FDR is an assessment of the potential fire behaviour, the difficulty of suppressing a fire, and the potential impact on the community should a bushfire occur on a given day. All bushfires are not the same ... their severity depends on a number of different factors. A shift or change at a moment notice or as to what kind of fire that is indicated / or level of the fire danger rating, determines how you react with regard to your ‘Bushfire Survival Plan’. Fire danger rating is a daily fire weather forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology and acts as an early indicator of a potential bushfire danger. 1. Low to Moderate - These fires can be easily controlled and pose little or no threat/risk to life and property. Know where to get information and monitor any changes. 2. High - Again presents with minimal risk to life or property, know where to get information. 3. Very High - Fire can be difficult to control with flames at (or may burn) at tree top level. Some homes and businesses may be damaged or destroyed. Note – with any ‘high’ or ‘very high’ levels it is important to keep up-to-date with any changes in conditions. It is your responsibility to keep up-to-date by radio, TV or the internet. 4. Severe - A fire with a ‘severe’ rating may be

uncontrollable and move very quickly, with flame height higher than roof tops. A ‘severe’ fire may cause injuries, and some homes and businesses will be destroyed. During a fire with a ‘severe’ rating, leaving early is the safest option for your survival. Get your bushfire survival plan down and have it ready and activated ready to make your decision. Use your home as a place of safety only if it is well prepared and well constructed. 5. Extreme - A fire with an ‘extreme’ rating may uncontrollable, unpredictable, and fast moving. Flames will be higher than roof top level. People may be injured or killed, and homes and businesses destroyed. During an ‘extreme’ fire, leaving early is your safest option. Even well constructed homes may not provide safety. Get your bushfire survival plan activated to leave early. 6. Catastrophic - A fire with a ‘catastrophic’ rating will be uncontrollable, unpredictable, and fast moving. Flames will be higher than roof top level, people may be injured and killed, and thousands of homes and businesses that were considered well prepared and built will or may not be safe. For more information on how you can be bushfire ready, you can speak with the following local contacts: Glass House Mountains - Kirsty Levis – 0418 980 019 and Steve Rook – 0407 572 930 Landsborough V.C.E. Contributed by Helen Jakeman After 12 years Landsborough Rural Fire Service’s First Officer Craig Young has decided to stand down from the role, however he will remain an active member, and mentor to the younger officers. Craig has been a very professional and dedicated First Officer who had the support of all of the members of our brigade. We cannot thank him enough for leading our brigade, not only on the fire ground, but also guiding our members through the many changes within the Rural Fire Service. He volunteered so many hours to make the brigade what it is today. Mark Jakeman will now take on the challenging role, Mark joined the brigade as soon as he turned 16 and has always shown that he is prepared to volunteer many hours with training, meetings, hazard reduction burns and attending almost all call outs, whether it is a wild fire or house fire. Since joining he has gained the respect, of not only the members of our brigade, but also from the members of the surrounding brigades. Mark has big shoes to fill following on from Craig, however with Craig mentoring him, the transition should be smooth. At our recent Annual General Meeting, Paul Addison who has been serving in an Officer role, also decided to step down. Paul will also continue to be an active member of our brigade. He will be there to mentor not only new First Officer Mark Jakeman, but our other younger Officers – Matt Van Beek and Sam Mooney.

First Officer Mark Jakeman with Craig Young The Officers and Committee are as follows: First Officer: Mark Jakeman Second Officer: Kev Sedgman Third Officer: Trevor Jakeman Fourth Officer: Matt Van Beek Fifth Officer: Sam Mooney The committee are: Chairman: Paul Fishburn Secretary: Helen Jakeman and Andrew Farrell and Treasurer: Linda Young. This is the time of year that the brigade starts its Hazard Reduction Burns program and if you would like this to happen on your property, and you need the assistance of the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, please phone Mark Jakeman (First Officer) on 0459 450 862. Once again thanks to Craig and Paul for fulfilling their roles as Officers over the many years and for offering to mentor our younger Officers of the Brigade.

LIMITED PLACES ENROL NOW FOR 2016 More families are discovering that the only way to secure their place at Glasshouse Christian College is to enrol early. Many of the older year levels are full so please don’t leave it too late. Ring Sonya on 5439 0033 for a personalised no-obligation tour.

As part of our annual Grandparent’s Day celebrations at Beerwah Kindy, grandparents joined the children in the sandpit, at the playdough table, snuggled in book corner, painted together, and the most fun of all, grandparents sung and danced with us. The day was all about celebrating the vital and irreplaceable role grandparents play in the children's lives, their families and the wider community. Beerwah Kindy has always been fortunate to have such wonderful support on this day and this year was no exception. It was lovely to see how proud and enthusiastic the children were to show their special visitors around their Kindy. If you would like to find out more about how your child could benefit from being a part of our community kindergarten, visit our website beerwahkindy.com.au or join us at our open day on Saturday, August 22, from 12.00noon – 2.00pm. Big gig for Beerwah High Stage Band By Sonia Clark This year the excitement is rising as the Beerwah State High Stage Band will be performing at the Maleny Music Festival (MMF) at the end of this month. The band has a diverse repertoire and plays a range of toe tapping standards such as ‘All of Me’, ‘Birdland’ and ‘Chattanooga Choo-Choo’, to popular movie score favourites from James Bond and The Blues Brothers. This year the band of 12 members will be playing a half hour slot at the MMF and performing the newer pieces they have been practicing this year. The band is a mix of students from Year 7 – 11 and teachers, lead by Instrumental Music teacher Nathan Hill, who has been teaching music since 2003. This is his fifth year at Beerwah SHS. “I think the students are looking forward to the gig. We have a few new players in the band this year who are new to the high school and weren't involved in the performance last year. It'll be a great experience for them,” said Nathan. The band practice weekly as a group and the students also do regular home practice. With a small band of this size, compared to a concert band with 30-40 members, all members have a really important part to play. Home practice ensures that they come together musically as a team. Along with the students, there are some very talented and dedicated music teachers from Beerwah SHS who also give up their own time to help out with the band each week - Will Audley, Sarah Minns and Liz Druitt. Last year was the first year of performing at The Maleny Music Weekend and by all accounts it was a great experience. “It was a lot different from our usual performances at school and community events. The students really enjoyed performing at last year's festival and we got some really positive feedback from the audience. “It's always great to walk into an event like this and feel the atmosphere that the MMF has. Everyone is there for the same reason - to be part of, to listen to, and enjoy some great music,” Nathan said. The Maleny Music Festival is on at the Maleny Showgrounds Friday, August 28 – Sunday, August 30. The Beerwah State High School Stage Band is playing on Friday, August 28 at 7.00pm on the Obi Obi – Green Stage.

Health, Beauty

&Wellbeing Hot stone massage

By Shannon Greenwood Do you know the benefits of a good Hot Stone Massage? Being able to give yourself some down time and relax is a healthy habit. Hot stone massage is a great way to reap health benefits. This massage offers some relaxing time for your mind and does wonders in releasing muscular tension thus it’s a great way to relieve stress. Some doctors are now recommending this therapy as part of medical treatment for health problems like Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Hypertension and Musculoskeletal problems. With the relaxation you get from this therapy, it’s easier to doze off into a deep sleep which your body needs to recuperate.

Manipulation of muscles can significantly reduce muscle spasm and give comfort to painful muscles helping back pain and muscle aches. It improves blood circulation and energy flow while also releasing toxins from your body. When muscles are massaged, toxins that are clogged within are released. Hot Stone Massage gives you a happy, calming and soothing feeling. It can do wonders in giving you an emotional boost. Why not try this treatment during our August Special. A 90 minute treatment normally $105.00 is now $95.00. Pop into Hinterland Body and Soul, Shop 5, 5 Turner Street, Beerwah or phone us on 5494 0546 for an appointment.

Visitor Information Centre Update

M I LY A F D N AY U F

By Bev Dooley July was a very busy month in the Glasshouse Mountains Information Centre with School holidays increased visitor numbers which have continued into August. For the first time since we opened, we are putting extra Ambassador volunteers on the weekend shifts. Did you know that around 40% of our visitors are from overseas? Recently, one of those overseas visitors from the UK was a direct descendant of Matthew Flinders who visited us, as a result of discovering his heritage. The end of July saw us utilise the centre for a very engaging presentation from three Sunshine Coast business operators, ‘Sunreef’ who operate the brilliant swim with the whales experience, ‘Larc About’ who operate the only amphibious vehicle on the coast, and ‘Skydiving Sunshine Coast’. All three talks were enthusiastic and made us feel like we were there. It was a great format with all the Ambassadors enjoying a chat and morning tea, something that we plan to do quarterly. We have a lovely new range of jams in the centre if you are looking for something special, some of which we have tasters for, as well as our normal range of honey. Over the next few weeks, we will have a growing range of stunning postcards these are very special, a good size, with fabulous shots of the area. If you would like to volunteer with us, call in and collect an application form or call me, Bev Dooley on 0417 709 157.

Photography Corner with the U3A Grafx Group Contributed and image by Margaret Thompson

Morning magic To wake in the morning to the sound of the birds and the neighing of horses is a treat for city folk these days. There is something so refreshing to see the mountains and valleys revealed so graciously from under the veil of a morning mist. This was how it was in May at Witta for this photographer who spent hours as the mist played in the hills nearby. Then to look even more closely into the enlarged images on the screen and find more secrets within. Taken with a Canon EOS 1000D, ISO400, f7.1 at 1/20s. A little tweaking and a vignette in Bridge’s Camera Raw to complete. Voted picture of the month.

locals supporting locals Mooloolah Public Hall News Just to update the new residents of Mooloolah, the public hall is in Bray Road, opposite the kindergarten. Our public hall is an old girl at approximately 110 years old. The pioneering fathers of this district built the hall and bequeathed it to the community. For all those years past, volunteers have managed and maintained the hall and it remains the property of the community to this day. The hall is available for rent and the monies made from this help with maintenance costs and upgrades. The hall is a great venue for birthday parties, dances, family gatherings and after school activities, and the fully equipped kitchen makes catering very easy. So next time you need a venue please consider renting our local hall. (Bookings to 5494 7527 or enquiries to 5494 7793).

Contributed by Bev Smith Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council and the Community Grant Funding program the parking area has new asphalt. The old hall is looking pretty good!

Things To Do Things 2 do – Children’s Book Week

Caxton Street…and all that Jazz

This year Children’s Book Week will be celebrated from Saturday, August 22 through to Friday, August 28 with the theme ‘Books light up our World’. Endorsed by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, the week seeks to engage young Australians with a love of literature. On Tuesday, August 25, Beerwah Library will have a free evening activity event from 5.00pm -5.30pm. Come dressed up as your favourite character or wear your pj’s to help celebrate. In keeping with the theme, there will be night time stories with craft activities afterwards to help light up your world. Maleny Library will hold a free daytime event on Thursday, August 27, from 9.30am – 10.30am. Come dressed up as your favourite book character.

For the sixth year in succession, Maleny’s RSL Hall will swing with the Caxton Street Jazz Band (CSJB) on September 12 from 7.00pm as fans ‘dance the blues away’. Maleny Arts Council organised the event in conjunction with the RSL, and MAC treasurer John Marsden said the CSJB was one of their most popular nights. “It is a great jazz band and Bernice Haydock sings blues like Peggy Lee. I’m starting to book the tables now. “That doesn’t mean patrons have to book a table, we welcome couples or singles as we always arrange for ‘community tables’ for people who just want to come on their own and they will meet new people there. It is a fantastic atmosphere. Places can also be booked at trybooking.com or at the Maleny Information Centre. For tables, usually of 10 though, it is best to give me a ring on 5494 2584,” said John. CSJB was formed in Brisbane in 1977, playing at Baroona Hall in Caxton Street and later at the Caxton Hotel, and this gave the band its name. “CSJB has a soul that makes it unique…it is a group you could take proudly anywhere in the world,” said one reviewer. The six piece band appeals not only to those who want to dance to the sound of hot jazz, but also to any jazz aficionadi who just wants to soak up the sound, as well as to the general public. The band’s inspiration is the classic hot jazz of the early twentieth century, but influenced strongly by swing, folk, country, rhythm and blues of the 20s, 30s and 50s. Current Caxton Street musos include John Braben on trumpet, Paul Williams clarinet and tenor sax, Bernice Haydock piano and vocal, Tom Nicolson trombone, banjo and vocal, Andrew Shaw double bass, and Bob Mair with drums and washboard.

Far from the Madding Crowd Maleny Film Society are presenting the film 'Far from the Madding Crowd' adapted from the Thomas Hardy novel at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, August 22, at 7.15pm. Bathsheba Everdene is orphaned in her youth and raised by her aunt and uncle. By her own admission she knows she is a strong, independent woman and fears there is no man up to the challenge of taming her. She inherits the family farm and finds herself managing the estate, a rare position for a woman of her time. As she rebuilds the farm she finds herself entangled with three very different suitors. Dinner at 6.00pm is catered by Wild Rocket @ Misty’s. Check the website www.malenyfilmsociety. info for movie details.

Reader report

NBN / Ziggy’s Blue Guerrillas are preparing for a Beerwah attack and have lodged a Development Application with Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) for a 30 metre high microwave tower in Tower Land Beerwah. NBN proposes a ‘Community Information’ session on 27 August in the Beerwah and District Community Hall between 3.00pm and 6.00pm. This microwave tower proposal does not meet the SCC Planning Scheme under as there about 40 houses within the 400 metre radius set out in the SCC Telecommunications Facility Code (TFC). The nearest house is 100 metres from the tower and Telstra was refused a tower of this height in 2011 on an adjoining site. The tower will be visible from declared Scenic Routes and the site is in a declared DEHP ‘high risk’ area for flora but at least 370 sq m will be cleared. It is also in a medium bushfire risk area & a medium landslip area This proposal would add to the existing unacceptable microwave radiation nuisance in this residential area from Telstra, Vodafone and Optus Please prepare yourself for an objection to this proposal and demand NBN to have an open forum to answer questions at their ‘information’ session. The Peachester community was able to achieve this. Jim Straker Maleny

Local Daniel Tay Chean sent us this dramatic image he captured last Thursday night, when he saw a car burning out of control at around 9.00pm on Beerburrum Road, about 3kms North of Elimbah. The photo shows the flames had extended from the car in to the forest and was taken before emergency services arrived. If you capture an interesting photo locally, we love to receive them, just send them with your name, and a brief description of what you have seen to editorial@gcnews.com.au

Red means stop!

I live on the Hardwood Road side of Landsborough, and the new traffic lights were fantastic.. now people run the lights, believing they know the sequence or they’re just in a hurry. A police presence would be good. I have nearly been cleaned up six times this week, by those that think red means go! Lucky for me I lived here through the no lights years and do not proceed until the intersection is ok. Sometimes this means I proceed on amber lights. Please people, use your common sense. The lights never leave you sitting long. K Minns Landsborough

In the Garden with Brownie

Gardening for cancer research!

Ask Brownie

brownie@gcnews.com.au How can I get more fruits off my mango tree next year? Garth, Peachester If you haven’t had very good fruiting for a number of years, you may have a dud tree planted, and so the best option is to cut it out and plant another. If it was just last season, you need to look at your watering and feeding regime. Mangoes are tropical plants and so like higher water and nutrient levels than some other fruit trees. Also to get good fruits, you need to get good flower pollination. Researchers at the University of New England have debunked the idea that honey bees are the bees-knees when it comes to pollination. What they found was that native flies not honey bees have come out as one of the top pollinators of mango trees. They discovered native flies visited 20% more frequently than bees and they were among the top transporters of pollen, with the 12 most frequent visitors including two bee species, nine flies and one beetle. Of all the flies, the small black tip fly visited with the highest frequency, but in terms of the amount of pollen transferred to a single mango flower, the native bee and several flies performed better than the honey bee. The native bee transferred on average about seven pollen grains per visit, the honey bee 2.7 pollen grains. The blue blowfly about 6.8 pollen grains. So, according to the researchers, growers should be looking to attract native bees and native flies by giving them more of what they need in the rest of your garden. This may include planting native plants close to your mango trees that produce lots of nectar and pollen at times when the mango tree isn’t in flower. Mango flowering is initiated by cold weather – which we’ve had a good run of up until now. Then they need milder temperatures when they start flowering – which we now have too. So the signs are there for a good mango season. To improve your mango crop, you should be watering now and feeding with a fruit tree fertiliser. One of the main problems with mangoes is anthracnose, which is a black fungal infection. To help strengthen the tree’s defences, it is important to feed the tree with potash as well. Once you see flowers forming, spray them and the whole tree every three weeks with a fungicide spray, from flowering, until just before you harvest. Alternate between a copper based fungicide (like Yates Liquid Copper – it’s copper formulation is less likely to accumulate in the soil) and Mancozeb, that way you’ll vary the type of fungicide being used. Meaning you’ll be better placed to control a wider range of problems, and you’ll prevent any copper build-up in the soil. If we get periods of extended rains, you might need to make the sprays each fortnight during that period. And don’t forget to treat around the base of your trees if you have them mulched – as the fungal spores will be living there just waiting to rise up and infect your mangoes.

Jack Kropp, aged 89, longterm Peachester and Beerwah resident, enjoys working in his garden, and at this time of year, he has a special project. For the last 10 years Jack has helped provide vegetables for the produce stall at the Beerwah Charity Sports, an annual community fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland. This year Jack has crops of silver beet and lettuce growing well and ready to come to their peak in time for the Charity Sports on August 22. Early each year Jack checks the date of the Charity Sports Day, and carefully times his plantings so the crops are ready for picking on Sports day. Jan Cheal, who has run the produce stall for the 44 years since the Charity Sports started, relies on generous donations and support from many growers, to stock the fresh local fruits and vegetables, for which the produce stall is noted. Jack Kropp is an important member of the team of growers, volunteers and helpers, who make this stall a major attraction at the sports day every year.

Plant of the Month

Prickly leaved paperbark

Melaleuca nodosa On first glance of this lovely shrub in flower, you could be forgiven for thinking it is a wattle or Acacia. Unlike most Melaleucas which have ‘brush like’ flowers, this Melaleuca has golden globular flowers. A plant of wet or dry heath, it grows in coastal sandy soils from New South Wales to North Queensland. Most references indicate that M.nodosa grows to 7 metres but many specimens tend to grow much smaller in the wild. The bark of this shrub is papery and the needle like leaves are quite prickly, hence the name. Following flowering, the woody clusters of fruit persist on the plant for some time, ensuring that the seed is viable for months to come. Melaleuca nodosa is a good source of pollen and nectar, making it an important plant for birds, bees and butterflies.

this seems for many old fashioned, however, I believe that revisiting this spiritual discipline is one our modern world needs to revisit. Giving thanks increases our level of contentment and draws us closer to God and so our sense of gratefulness grows. Luke 17: 11-19 speaks to us of this giving thanks for the little, and finding so much more… should you take time to read it you will find that only one goes back to give thanks, for a life giving action and receives so much more. I would like to challenge you all to spend some time making a list of all your blessings both big and small, giving thanks for each one. Who knows, those feelings of discontent might just decrease as our sense of gratitude and wholeness grows….. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Recently, I came across a Nigerian Proverb ‘Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot’ and it got me thinking. We all know that some of the world’s sharpest minds are employed by advertising companies. They are employed to work out new ways of making us feel discontent with our lot. Then aim their focussed advertising to encourage us to buy something we actually don’t need. Is it any wonder that many of us feel dissatisfied or as though we have missed out in some way or on something! I felt this proverb held the key to resisting such dissatisfaction. When we consciously list our blessings, name them and give thanks for them,

Sport Funding For New Shade System Glasshouse Country Bowls Club have obtained funding for a new shade cover system from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The system is to be supplied and installed by local business Campbell's Upholstery. Gary Campbell, owner of Campbell's Upholstery, said he appreciates the club looking to local business for this type of work. It is the second such system he has installed, after providing the shade system at Woodford Bowls Club some years ago. The pulling down of the old shades and renovation of posts has been done by club members. The old shades were installed by club members more than 30 years ago. Local bowlers are looking forward to having the new

Super Strawberry

Contributed by Graham Nicholson shades in place before the summer heat arrives. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club is currently having a drive for new members. Any person interested in playing lawn bowls can come along to their ‘Come and Try Day’ on Sunday, August 23 at 10.00am. A free barbecue lunch will be provided. Ring 5494 6241 for catering purposes. New bowlers to the district, as well as current members, are invited to come along for a game. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club has one of the best grass greens in the district. Ladies Day is Wednesdays and Men’s day on Thursdays. A sheet is available on the club notice board.

Round 7

Come on, strawberry growers, where are you? Only one entry in Round 7 of the Super Strawberry comp! However it was a very respectable 145 grams; so thanks to Braetop Berries for bringing it in, and they win the weekly prize of a six-pack from our sponsor Beerwah Hotel! The odds are narrowing for Round 8, the final week of the competition. The leading contender so far this year weighed 176 grams, so beat that and you could have the 2015 champion. Sadly the aim of achieving a Guinness World Record for a Glasshouse Country strawberry is fading away for 2015. Perhaps next year we could find out what variety would be most likely to produce the necessary weight of over 250 grams. We have been close in past years with

Super Strawberry champions weighing 240 grams (C & M Lister, 1997) and 245 grams (Shane Frizzo, 2006), so it must be possible. Round 8 closes this Friday, August 21, 4.00pm at Coochin Creek Co-op. Submit your entries earlier in the week if you find a likely contender, but no later than 4.00pm Friday. Remember, this competition is all in fun, helping to promote the Beerwah Charity Sports which will be held this Saturday, August 22 at Beerwah Sports Ground, with all proceeds to Cancer Council Queensland.

Just for Laughs True confessions

Little kid

On the first night of their honeymoon, the husband isn’t sure how to tell his bride about his stinky feet and smelly socks, while the wife is wondering how to break the news to him about her awful breath, which so far, she’s been able to cover up. After some soul-searching, the husband gathers his nerve and says, “I have a confession.” She draws closer, peers into his eyes, and says, “darling, so do I.” Recoiling, he says, “don’t tell me - you’ve eaten my socks.” Submitted by Brian, Glass House Mountains

Little kid comes in late ta school. Teacher says, "why ya late?" Kid says, "had a take a heifer down to get her bred." Teacher says, "couldn't your ol' man do it?" Kid says, "sure he could, but not as good as the bull." From Steinbeck’sThe Grapes of Wrath

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclarvoyant.com LEO July 23 – August 22 Saturn is still reorganising your life, emotionally and domestically. Just be patient for another couple of weeks as things still may not go your way. Adjustments are required and stubborn attitudes need to be discarded. There are family responsibilities on property. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The biggest cosmic event for you now, is Jupiter moving through your sign! This signals a new cycle, not seen for 12 years, for self-improvement and personal career expansion. You will be pushing on with your ambition and changing life direction. LIBRA September 23– October 22 Early in the week you can be your own worst enemy if you let family, or other tensions, provoke you to take an uncompromising stand. Then the weekend sees the social tempo picking up and responding to a happy beat. When under tension, get it off your chest. SCORPIO October 23– November 22 Saturn still has the last few weeks to clear from its sign of Scorpio into a more affluent energy, being Sagittarius. This increased the likelihood of a clear headed approach to problems. From August 23, new opportunities expand your role in many communal activities.
