LiSEC KSR in use at Boermans Glas, Belgium ‘Would Not Trade The System For Anything!’ Boermans Glas in Kuringen, Belgium, employs about 90 people in a region where competition in flat glass processing is fierce.

T

he company, which has been around for more than 100 years and is part of the Saint Gobain Group, produces single glass, double insulating glass and increasingly triple insulating glass. Their machine park includes several LiSEC machines, including a KSR processing machine. “When it came to grinding, we had a real bottleneck,” says Marcel Nouwen, production manager at Glass Solutions Boermans. “And the importance of the issue only grew with the increasing demand for sheets with grinding processes. The previous machine was highly unreliable. We had so many stoppages that sensible planning was almost impossible. When we started searching for a replacement, we also looked at the KSR system of a sister company.” The team in Kuringen considered the pros and cons of conventional systems on the market, but quickly reached a different decision. The satisfaction of their colleagues in the sister branch tipped the scales. “We wanted a solution that worked smoothly and was absolutely reliable - and now we have it,” Nouwen said.

When you ask the operator how satisfied he is with the KSR, a smile appears on his face. “We wouldn’t trade the system for anything,” he adds.

HEGLA invests in innovation centre for new technology Aimed At Expanding Research, Development Capability & Fueling Innovation The requirements of future markets, the opportunities of digitalisation and new processes for the surface functionalisation and structuring of glass are the focus of the newly established HEGLA New Technology centre.

T

he HEGLA Group, headquartered in Beverungen, Germany, founded the innovation centre to expand its research and development capability and increase its innovation power. “Automation, interconnection, and digitalization are developing rapidly, and we are facing the ensuing challenges with our innovative solutions,” said HEGLA Managing Directors Bernhard Hötger and Dr Heinrich Ostendarp. “To work on new solutions for our customers in a more in-depth, concentrated manner, we have created a work forum that offers the necessary space for visions, experiments and innovation projects away from the daily routine: New Technology,” they said. Strategic development will be located in the new company, while the teams in the relevant departments will be responsible for further developing machines, processes and technologies. HEGLA New Technology was established as an innovation centre that takes up ideas and potential from HEGLA’s individual companies and reflects on, evaluates and drives them forward. “Through intensive exchange and joint projects with HEGLA

boraident and the HEGLA-HANIC software house, we have been able to clearly perceive the great, profound and supplementary potential available in open, creative collaboration,” said Jochen H. Hesselbach, HEGLA Group CEO, to sum up the situation. “New Technology provides the ideal framework for innovation processes in order to try something out or include the expertise of other experts and unconventional thinkers,” explained Dr Markus Schoisswohl, the Managing Director of HEGLA New Technology. The new development team is headquartered in Paderborn in close proximity to the university, and is tasked with being the fast, flexible testing and implementation partner for the entire group. The first concrete results are on the agenda for Glasstec 2020, including new technologies for manufacturing smart glass applications with HEGLA boraident lasers. Dr Thomas Rainer, the head of development there, is also pleased about the new research centre that will offer customers direct added value in future. Tasks and customer projects have become ever more complex; not only at HEGLA but also at the laser specialists from Halle/Saale and the

software professionals from Bochum. “Sometimes we are asked to realise new ideas and requirements in the short term for specific projects but are unable to do so. It will be advantageous to transfer them to New Technology, where we are optimistic about our ability to develop them further as a team and in partnership with our customers,” said Dr Rainer. “We have clearly defined our initial aims and have already started to work on them,” added Dr Schoisswohl. “With our current projects, we strive to develop solutions that give customers greater transparency and more profound insight into their production processes.” In particular, topics such as improving communications between humans and machines or the increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence have provided a good basis for the centre’s work. In terms of content, it follows up on the ongoing further development and modularisation of the production control systems and machine controls of HEGLA and HEGLA-HANIC, emphasised Dr Jan Schäpers, the Managing Director of HEGLA-HANIC. “Together, we define open interfaces to all providers, structure the flow of data, and interconnect systems to arrive at perfectly harmonised shop floor logistics,” he said.

Gangxin’s Continuous Lengthwise Bending Tempering Furnace gains popularity Suitable For Processing Domestic Appliance Glass, Architecture Glass & Automotive Glass Gangxin’s Continuous Lengthwise Bending Tempering Furnace is gaining more and more popularity around the world.

T

here are two main reasons that have attracted many customers as followed. Firstly, it is suitable for processing domestic appliance glass, architecture glass and automotive glass. And secondly, it has its own advantages when compared with normal Continuous Lengthwise Bending Tempering Furnace, such as continuously loading glass, high production efficiency, continuously quenching, lower electric power consumption, flexible operation, easily arc-adjustment, excellent surface quality, high bending accuracy and good optical performance etc. One of the company’s customers

from South Korea finally chose the machine after visiting the firm thrice in the second quarter of 2019. This customer is a professional bending glass manufacturer in South Korea who usually supplies the finished glass to Hyundai. In Gangxin’s factory, he not only found the opportunity to carefully compare the glass samples processed by its furnace with other companies, but also he consulted an expert from Saint-Gobain about Gangxin’s electrical and mechanical design. It was only after this that he finally decided to purchase this type of machine. Gangxin also provides glass

tempering bending machines in Pakistan. One particular customer from the country bought two sets of glass tempering bending machines in the past four years from Gangxin. He is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of Honda and Toyota, supplying superior quality automotive side window glass to these companies.

Balkan’s best in glass processing: Kristal Uses LiSec’s Top-Notch Equipment & Software Solutions To Propel Business Kristal has a clear focus: reaching EU standards through the highest possible quality. Their strategy: no compromises regarding production equipment and the corresponding software.

K

ristal is located in the heart of Bosnia, one hour’s drive from its capital Sarajevo. The company was registered in 1994, as a trade company for importing and exporting glass and belongs to the major glass processors and suppliers of IG units in the Balkan region. With more than 200 employees, Kristal has an annual turnover of about 12.5 million Euros, focusing on IG units and processed glass for architectural & indoor glazing. Their specialties: glass solutions for marine industry, sinks made of glass (a patented concept) and decorative glasses (for renovation of churches etc.). Nikola Franjić, Managing Director of Kristal says, “Every time I went to a glass trade fair in the past, I had a glance at the LiSEC booth and thought by myself: one day, I will be able to afford this equipment – I set it as a

92

Glass Bulletin | July - September, 2019

goal.” A goal he was very serious about. And he is not in for compromises. ”We want to produce the best quality glass you can get. With this goal in mind and from a certain level onwards, you can only work together with the best brands – that goes for the raw material, the glass you buy and all the processing steps after that, machinery and software included,” Franjić says. Asked about competition, Franjić answers with a high degree of selfconfidence: “Of course there is competition – but instead of focusing on competitors, we invest our energy in designing the next two, three steps we will take – that makes much more sense.” In 2003, Kristal had reached this ‘quality’ point. The management started buying top-notch equipment from LiSEC in order to propel business. They bought a rotating

table and an extruder. Later on, they extended their machine park with solutions for glass processing and cutting as well as two IG lines from LiSEC. Also, on the software side they invested in LiSEC solutions. Franjić is very clear about the reasons for this single brand strategy. “When you buy from LiSEC, you know what you get. You buy top-quality machines and software, but at the same time you also buy part of LiSEC’s own experience in the glass processing industry – which is of an enormous value to us.” In his eyes, LiSEC is the only company that offers the entire range of products and invests a lot of money in new products and solutions. “And in that we saw an opportunity for us to grow with a company that is that solid in what it does – and hence become part of the success story of LiSEC,” he adds.

LiSEC • 2

To get a grip on production: LiSEC software Part of growing is also the need for clear processes and for data you can rely on to manage production and steer your company. Kristal is no exception here. They used to have LiSEC optimization software to optimize the glass yield and sent the optimization results to their cutting tables. For all other process steps and production data they had their own tools – which did not fulfil their needs any longer on a certain point in time: further developing the tool for it to cover all needs became too big of an exercise for the small IT team. Matea Franjić, the daughter of the CEO, who grew up in the company and takes over responsibilities step by step, explains: “We decided for a fully integrated software, because we had the feeling we were losing control due to the rapidly growing order intake. We wanted to have the complete picture – from the moment the glass sheets are delivered to us until the finished product ready for transport.” The entrepreneurs scrutinized the market in search of suitable software tools and compared solutions in detail. Nikola Franjić: “Also here, we opted for an integrated solution. LiSEC offers the entire software system – which bears all the experience in glass processing they gathered over the years in it.” The latest software tools include GPS.order, LiSEC “all-in-one solution” for order entry tailored for the glass processing industry and GPS.prod, which is a powerful tool for optimization, internal logistics & capacity planning. On top of that they invested in GPS.ident WS, a solution

which enables paperless production, rapid integration of rupture discs and detection / tracking of all glass sheets in the shop floor area. LIS.delivery will simplify handling in the shipping area: Dispatched racks, as well as delivery commissions can all be determined by hand scanner. Matea Franjić on the targets of the new software tools: “We will be able to process glass much faster and expect to be more productive.

It is a people business Kristal is not only best in glass processing in the region. It also does very well in people management. Running a company is about dealing with people: the management at Kristal see their employees as number one, focus on them and make sure they feel at home. “A few months ago, this area was flooded. More than 100 employees came to the factory first to help out here and then took care of their own houses. This was a very emotional

moment to me, because I really understood how close the employees are to the company,” Matea Franjić proudly says.
