What’s out there on the local music scene? Here’s an intro to a few local bands currently on the scene. Dirty Sterling Four lads, two guitars, one bass and a set of drums. Formed in October 2012, the band is made up of Mark Donaldson, Jonni McGrath, Ian Swift and David Gammidge. Their Facebook page says that they ‘play Indie riffs with lyrics that hit home’. Ameira Another four piece band that play Alt/ Rock and comprising Luke Colclough, Josh Graham, Gary Butler and James Hughes. Formed in 2011, their Facebook page says that they ‘try to capture a sound that’s nice and heavy but has a strong vocal to keep it easy to listen to’. Ruen Brothers The band is two brothers, Rupert and Henry Stansall. They’ve recorded tunes at the BBC, been played on Radio 1 and 2, 6Music and XFM to name but a few channels. NME said about them ‘…in an impressively homemade video, the 14 | GLANFORD ADVERTISER JULY 2013
brothers match classic black and white visuals with ‘Aces’, a rattling race through all the best parts of the 60s. Sharp, Stones-esque riffs? Check. Deep, swooping vocals that’d make Roy Orbison jealous? Check. Liberal use of the word ‘baby’? Check, check, check. Despite all that, they still manage to make it sound fresh - as if they’ve unearthed an unheard track from that golden era and spruced it up to make it their own…’ Henry told Fortitude, the online entertainment magazine, “We sweated it out, we’ve done some of the roughest gigs. I think growing up in a town like Scunthorpe, you don’t get influenced by any scenes, you just do what you enjoy and don’t worry about the rest. And I think that’s a healthy sort of upbringing.” Here here Henry! We wish all of the above bands the very best of luck. If you are a local band member or want to tell us anything about the bands above (or any other local bands), or even want to promote your own band’s gigs, email us on email@example.com

The Ropewalk now houses, amongst other attractions, artists’ studios, creative business units and a live entertainment venue, Ropery Hall. The Museum The Ropewalk Museum pays tribute to the history of Hall’s Barton Ropery which opened in 1767. Housed in a Grade II listed building which stretches a quarter of a mile along the length of Barton Haven, the museum corridor contains displays, artefacts and other memorabilia associated with the history of the factory and its workforce.

Did an infamous Highwayman visit The Bay Horse Inn in Winteringham? Legend has it that none other than Richard ‘Dick’ Turpin, who in the 1730’s joined a gang of deer thieves, and later became a poacher, burglar, horse thief and murderer, slept at The Bay Horse Inn in Winteringham. Turpin’s career started near London in Epping Forest, but after shooting a criminal associate he decamped to live in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, but when suspicions were aroused that he was a horse thief and rustler of other farm stock (in those days, a crime punishable by hanging), he moved on again – this time to Brough, and using the alias of John Palmer. It is almost certain that he crossed on the ferry from Brough to Winteringham many times and when the tides or weather were inclement he would have sometimes have to wait at one of Winteringham’s Inns before crossing back to Brough.
18 | GLANFORD ADVERTISER JULY 2013
And that’s how the legend started that Dick Turpin stayed at The Bay Horse Inn in Winteringham. As history shows, Turpin came to a sticky end when he was hung,in York, not for being a highywayman, nor a murderer…but for being a horse thief!
Did you know? Around 400 years ago there were no less than six pubs, inns and alehouses in Winteringham – probably called the Ferry Boat (or Ferry House), The Bay Horse, Waterside Inn, the Ship Inn, the Three Horse Shoes and the New Mown Hay. Do you have a local history story? Know more about Dick Turpin’s links with Winteringham? Contact us with any information or articles on email@example.com

Winterton Fake Festival
They’ve done it again! I’ve always been a fan of the Fake Festivals, over the last few years I’ve been to a few, including Scunthorpe, Haxey and Winterton. The Total Stone Roses tribute band for me ensured I wasn’t going to be missing this one for the world, everybody seems to be ‘Roses crazy’ at the minute and having bought tickets to their gig in Finsbury Park in London, this was a perfectly fitting warm up for my adventure in ‘The Big Smoke’! The day started out great, get there early, few beers at the festival and some great food with some really good warm-up bands to liven the mood. Plenty of people had the 26 | GLANFORD ADVERTISER JULY 2013
same idea and it made for a great atmosphere, basking in the sunshine. The bar service was great- buy tokens, get your drink- no queues! The food service was great- literally anything you could think of! Once the headline bands appeared (Stone Roses/Kasabian/Prodigy Tributes), the atmosphere was immense, not only did they sound great they also looked the part too and really knew how to get the crowd going. By the end of the night everybody was eating from the palm of their hands. The bands really were quality, which was to be expected as they were all top UK tributes, and it really made for a great night, some of the hardcore fans got a little bit carried away, and seeing grown adults with faces painted to match their kids made me chuckle! One of the best Fake Fests so far, definitely one to remember, if you haven’t been before I would recommend them 100% , great fun for all the family. Nick Whipps, Scunthorpe

Your fortune for July 2013 Aries - (Mar 21 - Apr 19) Pressures at work will begin to ease off this month. You can safely begin to take charge again in areas where you may have backed off due to personnel or health issues. The planetary positions support diligence and precision in all you do for the next month. In addition, this is an opportune time for being placed in a management position or being given more authority in your place of work. Pay attention to details and organization without much fuss. The month also supports business, income and money-based decisions in your personal as well as professional life.
Taurus - (Apr 20 - May 20) The value of partnerships and relationships is a key lesson for Taurus this month. The present planetary positions help you to understand value in the lives of others, as well as their importance in your life. Try to express and embrace the gifts of love around you. These gifts can be material as well as emotional. There would be fiery passion in your belly that can help you reach deep into your heart’s desires. It is okay to take action and be more impulsive during the course of this week. There will be challenges for you at work. Taurus is usually a stable, persistent worker who moves through a task steadily. This month could have you feeling a bit scattered on the work frontier. Take time to write lists and prioritize your time.
Gemini - (May 21 - June 21) Be an emissary of relationships and love this month. Blessing you also will be the major planets in your natal chart.
