Why Won’t You Stay… Just a Little Bit Longer

THE STAY HOTELS Turkey’s first independent carbon-neutral hotel group unveils its latest happenings, including the opening of its new property in the heart of Istanbul’s fashion quarter…

Bebek Hotel by The Stay - The Stay Hotels

With a handful of design-led properties in prime urban locations in Istanbul and Alacati on the Aegean-facing Cesme Peninsula, The Stay Hotels’ guests can choose to be by the Bosphorus strait or the sea, but always with warm hospitality and curated culture. From a striking new property to an art exhibition, plus new food and music offerings.

Bebek Hotel by The Stay - The Stay Hotels Perfectly located in the chic Bebek neighbourhood, this 1950’s waterside retreat blends original art deco features with neon lighting and modern art by established and up-and-coming Turkish artists. At the heart of the hotel, The Terrace Restaurant delights guests with a new nine-dish menu curated by acclaimed chef Athinagoras Kostakos, famed for his modern Greek Meraki restaurant in London and time as Head Chef at the award-winning ‘Bill and Coo’, a fine-dining restaurant in Mykonos. On balmy nights, guests can dine on Aegean-inspired delights such as a classic, fresh Bebek Hotel Greek salad or a mouth-watering and cooling shrimp carpaccio. The hotel’s chic seasonal rooftop bar is also re-opening for the summer as the place to go for sophisticated signature cocktails and a DJ-led soundtrack. Penthouse Bosphorus Suite

Gladys JetSet Bebek Hotel by The Stay’s atmospheric in-house Dragon Restaurant has long been the place to go for authentic Cantonese and Szechuan dishes. Interiors reflect the heritage of the cuisine with dragon motifs and rich red details – all with views across the Bosphorus strait. Now, every Sunday from 2pm until midnight and Monday from 5pm until midnight guests can also dine al fresco on specialties such as hot sour soup or crispy duck while a live band performs on the hotel’s waterfront Terrace Restaurant.

About The Stay Hotels Award-winning The Stay Hotels operates five properties with a total of more than 180 guest rooms in Istanbul and Alacati in Turkey. In Istanbul, the collection includes its newest property that opened in May 2022, The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi, together with The Stay Nisantasi, which is set in the heart of the Fashion Quarter; The Stay Bosphorus, a revamped 19th-century waterfront mansion; and Bebek Hotel by The Stay, a glamorous and storied hotel. In Alacati, The Stay Warehouse is a cool former industrial space close to the coast, which won the Best International Hotel category of the Food and Travel 2021 Readers Awards.

The Stay Warehouse - Interior

In 2022, The Stay Hotels became the first carbon-neutral independent hotel group in Turkey. It was awarded carbon-neutral status by the internationally recognized sustainability specialist Bureau Veritas (https://group. following an evaluation of the group’s adherence to the international standard for greenhouse gas verification. As well as taking practical steps in its own operation to counter any greenhouse gases produced, The Stay Hotels has invested in domestic and green-energy projects locally and globally and works with companies that are committed to using green and sustainable products and processes. Photography|John Kovach

By Anna Kathryn Kovach Like a technicolor dream with cosmic explosions of vibrant colors, so are the iconic paintings of Peter Max. The Christine Frechard Gallery was a marvelous way to showcase and celebrate “The Peter Max Experience” in Pittsburgh. Peter Max has been making the world a more colorful celebration of life with his works of art since the 1960s. With so much happening in our world, it was so refreshing to take a step back and truly allow his art to transport me back to the summer of love and the pop culture of the ‘60s. Every work of art is different, no two are alike. It was not only captivating, but it was also a much-needed source of positivity. From the moment I entered the art gallery, it felt as if there were beams of sunshine coming through every work of art. The entire gallery was illuminated by his colorful expressions of love. The gatherings of many avid collectors and onlookers told me just how much Peter Max has been captivating us all since the beginning and will continue to do so for many years to come. There were so many paintings, from floor to ceiling that I had a difficult time deciding on which one spoke to me the most. Truly I tell you, they all spoke to me. Each painting had a unique way of conveying various feelings. Every stroke of his brush brought me to feel many emotions from our nation’s past. I gravitated to his depictions of our fallen heroes from 9/11 and our American flag. After I spent some time allowing myself to absorb the art, I found the one that spoke to me the most. It was a portrait of the Statue of Liberty. I was just drawn to the beauty of her regal gaze and how the colors around her made you feel this is what freedom looks like. Freedom to express oneself through art and the freedom to boldly use colors like no other person has used before. Art should never have boundaries or restrictions; it’s supposed to make you feel something greater than what mere words could ever express. We need more of Peter Max’s art in our world and in our lives. I adore his effortless yet charismatic way of signing each work of art with just “Max”. It seems very humble and yet very straightforward about who he is as a person. His art tells me that all are welcome to experience his passion for life, beauty and a world radiating with more color. Whether you have followed his career or are like me and have discovered his art for the first time, it is never too late to rediscover Peter Max! There would be no rainbow in our world without the vibrancy of his art. He has shown the world for so many years how colors unite us through art, through feelings and throughout our lives. Why would we ever choose to live in a lingering gray cloud when we could be a part of a rainbow. A special thanks to Christine Frechard for inviting Gladys Magazine into Photography|John Kovach her gallery. For more information about Peter Max, please visit his studio at Christine Frechard, the Owner and Director of the Christine Frechard Art Gallery, with Gladys Contributing Writer Anna Kathyrn Kovach.

Helena Christensen

The Icons | Helena Christensen x Karen Millen Q&A

An icon through and through, model, photographer and activist Helena Christensen shares her favourite memories from the Nineties, what style really means to her, as well as the pieces from the collection she’s coveting.

Q: What is the key to self-confidence?

HC: The key to self-confidence, I think, is mostly about not caring too much what anyone else thinks of you. Despite this you should absolutely be kind, be fair, be honest and believe in yourself.

Q: What does the Nineties mean to you?

HC: I started working in the fashion business in the Nineties which was an intense and amazing experience – there was a lot of big hair, fake eyelashes and super cool music. It was just a really great time of most people’s lives.

Q: Share the best piece of advice you’ve been given.

HC: I’m still waiting on the best piece of advice, but, if I was going to give myself a good piece of advice it would be to get enough sleep, to drink way more water, but also something that I absolutely live by – try and be in the moment, no matter what, every single day.

Q: Describe the mood of this edit in three words? HC: Confident, dynamic and timeless.

Q: You’re also a photographer, what is it you love about being on both sides of the lens? HC: As a photographer I’m still amazed at the fact that we can freeze moments in life and keep them forever, it’s really as simple – or as complicated - as that. It just blows my mind how that is possible, it’s probably the reason that I take a ton of photos every day.

Q: How would you define style?

HC: Style is so personal, and in a big way an extension of yourself and your personality. It’s a way for people to express a part of themselves through colour, shape and fabrics - showing who you are without speaking. I’m a huge fan of colour, fabric and patterns – I wear a lot of mixed pieces – it’s an extension of my personality.

Q: What are your three favourite pieces of this edit?

HC: I really like the white oversized blazer, you can wear it over anything, and it’s a cool option to use during the spring or autumn. I love the Forever Dress, it fits really well and accentuates your shape, the female body is beautiful - it’s also very timeless, so maybe that’s why it’s called the Forever Dress! The corset dress is a fun little number that looks great with either flat sandals or high heels, you can also put the oversized blazer over it. And red lips – always red lips for something like that. 38 Gladys August Issue 2022

GUCCI HIGH JEWELRY Designed by the Creative Director Alessandro Michele, the new High Jewelry collection is showcased in a new campaign shot by photographer’s duo Mert and Marcus, featuring Oscar-winning actress and film producer Jessica Chastain. Imbued with a poetic and timeless aesthetic, the series of pictures and dedicated film evokes the atmosphere behind the new pieces of Hortus Deliciarum. HORTUS DELICIARUM Named Hortus Deliciarum, Latin for ‘Garden of Delights’, Gucci’s High Jewelry collection draws on the symbolic motifs that are dear to Alessandro Michele and Gucci, taken from the extensive and multifarious canon of the House’s iconography. A COLLECTION OF MEMORIES Made of unique pieces divided into five themes, the new collection is a creative ode to specific historical and architectural eras suspended in time and space. The journey, inspired by the Grand Tour, reveals romantic, maximalist jewels made with mastery. Like a passionate collector, Alessandro Michele writes an allegory that holds within dreams, experiences, stories, and secrets showcased as five chapters of a travel diary in the shape of “souvenirs in the form of a jewel”. ITALIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP The High Jewelry collection combines Italian craftsmanship with the romantic and poetic narrative of Gucci. Each gemstone has been fastidiously chosen for its quality and uniqueness, speaking to the painstaking attention to detail that Gucci creations are known for.

The Next BIG Thing: MOLLUSCA by Karen Holly Berliner

Exit the clamor of the city that in fact never does sleep, and enter Mollusca. From that moment on, you are drawn to this brand new dining spot fast becoming a hit. Its aesthetic exudes elegance and at the same time soothes your senses via subtle lighting casting shadows of ocean waves on the mirrored walls, resplendent with hand-blown glass light bulbs with shapes that liken jellyfish. Custom seating in luxurious leather and velvet fabrics in earthy taupe shades are accented with navy blue and sand highlights. Natural wood and marble comprises the vast bar and floors which mix elements of water and land together in a perfect natural balance and fusion. And oh the food…. If you love seafood, you are in good hands here and if more the carnivore, there are choices that accommodate just as well. While Mollusca is a seafood restaurant, there are strong influences from around the world thanks to the Brand Chef Gianmaria Sapia. Chef Sapia’s menu showcases 35 unique varieties of mussel sauces including such inventive flavors as salted caramel and popcorn, peanut butter and condensed milk and wasabi. Also offered is a raw bar with selections such as Italian crudos, ceviches and stand out choices like the perfectly adorned Mollusca signature oyster with black caviar, fresh Uni and mignonette sauce, almost too picture perfect to eat. Be sure to taste the scallop ceviche, carpaccio-sliced scallops marinated in a Peruvian sauce and topped with aromatic black truffles and Ossetra caviar; a textural and savory treat to the palate. The raw bar also offers Hand Rolls in two varieties: Classic Rolls like Hamachi and Toro; and Chef Rolls which allows original creations conjured by 46 Gladys August Issue 2022

the chef. Appetizers include such signatures as empanadas loaded with crab, shrimp and artisanal cheese with a house-made spicy tomato sauce. Chefs Plateau Sashimi served with branzino, scallop, Hamachi, salmon, Toro, and tuna is fresh and piled high. Salads and Soups are tasty delights, such as the Brazilian fish stew shrimp, sea bass and corn mousse served with a wedge of garlic bread for dipping; a meal in itself. The pasta and risotto courses feature a variety of delicious options such as the Grande Ravioli living up to its name, a sizeable ravioli filled with herb ricotta and egg yolk, finished with royal black caviar and freshly shaved black truffles. Mains such as the grilled octopus with a Greek salad, feta mousse, sous vide leeks and leek purée is textural and satisfying. The menu also includes several vegan options such as the fried tofu with edamame, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers. Desserts here are worth saving room for, such as the classic crème brûlée with seasonal berries. Brunch options are creative and satiate any palate such as the ricotta pancakes with blueberry sour cream. The wine, cocktail, and beer program is helmed by the very seasoned and talented Beverage Director Kate Uglova. Treat yourself to a Mollusca Martini; Spring 44 gin, sweet vermouth and a dash of Benedictine presented under a smoked cloche on a real piece of acacia wood, surrounded by dry flowers and herbs or perhaps the Tea O’clock Martini; gin and Japanese vodka with Earl Grey infused vermouth and bergamot marmalade. Cheers to the next best restaurant! 1 Little West 12th Street, New York, NY 10014

Visionary of the YEAR

56 Gladys August Issue 2022

Interviewed by Andrea Patrick Forte, Photography by Kassandra Lee Russell of Granite Stag Photography

Tatyana Basile - Visionary Founder and Executive Director of The Global Children School. With her new approach to early childhood education with diversity integrated into the curriculum, The Global Children School has allowed many children to learn and experience new things. Her love and care for kids is amazing. Tatyana’s Vision for creating this school is Inspiring!

How did the Global Children School come about? The idea came after my first daughter was born. I got so much pressure from relatives and friends when I was speaking to her in my language. I realized how the public is not educated on the subject. With so much research now available and with neuroscience being a thing now it is very clear. Children acquire languages before the age of 3 naturally. They don’t get confused. Of course parents need to make a decision to bring their child bilingual or multilingual and support that path. It is a lot of work. Global children school creates that multilingual and multicultural environment for families to support who they are. Children born global. It’s us, adults limiting them with cultural borders. GCS’s main goal is to open up the world so kids feel confident with their roots and be comfortable anywhere in the world. I was looking for a school for my daughter and nothing met my criteria, so I built my own. Tell us about what you offer at The Global Children School. In our school we offer a new early childhood philosophy. All current approaches are a hundred years old and don’t answer modern society’s needs. We are in a maker’s world now. The world is more mobile than ever and technology is developing at an increasing speed. People are facing global level issues and need to communicate effectively and it doesn’t matter where you are from. Mixed marriages and 3rd culture kids are not novice things anymore. Our response is Early Global Education. The next generation will need to learn how to look beneath our cultural stereotypes, look at events from different perspectives, collaborate and share ideas, empathize and deliver thoughts and perceptions, reactions. It’s hard. All of our teachers come from different countries. They bring their culture into their daily routines welcoming students with any backgrounds. We train and grow our teachers to be the first pilots for GCS philosophy. We bring a double immersion program with English, Spanish and Russian languages. In Europe or Latin America speaking several languages is normal. We believe being able to switch in one conversion from 3-4 languages should be a normal thing and we train our kids from 3 months old through Kindergarten to do so. Our curricula map has 5 components: Communication (speech, multi-literacy, humanities). How many Teachers are on your staff? We went from 2 teachers to 30 teachers in 2 years. Everyone has early childhood education in their background. However we keep molding them here to be GCS trained teachers. We are building a teacher’s portal to help teachers plan their curriculum and keep it high quality multilingual and multicultural. GCS teachers have extra things to learn as they go and we want to support them as much as possible. How do you include parents and guardians in their child’s education? We make parents our partners in this process. Without their support the learning process is much harder. We communicate daily through our portal and keep them posted on the progress. Kids work hard but they love it. Our goal is to create strong relationships with families and build a community. We bring all families together at our famous GCS events. What is the difference between a good teacher and an outstanding teacher? I truly believe that great teachers will always be interacting with kids at their level. They can understand how kids see the world and what’s important for kids now and respect that. Great teachers also not afraid to be vulnerable and show that they don’t know something. They make it a fun journey to investigate and learn about something together with the kids. Gladys August Issue 2022 57

G ladys CoverStory

What are your three biggest strengths? I’m not afraid of a challenge. Everyone close to me advised me not to start the school. It is scary to start that type of project. You can fail easily and we had a very tough 3 months when we didn’t have money to support the school. I had to improvise! I never let myself think I’m going to fail. It’s just never in my mind. I simply look for solutions for current challenges. I get things done. Instead of analyzing forever what entails me and eventually not do it, I simply don’t play that game with my mind. I go and get things done. I’m very confident im my abilities. I know I’ll be able to figure it out when I get there. I’m not afraid to ask for help. I have a big personality. Tell us about your family. I have 2 daughters, a dog and a husband. My girls are very cute and they keep me laughing. They allowed me to slow down and see beauty in simple things. At the same time, they taught me how to speed up. Our lives are very fast paced, including weekends. My husband says I can’t sit steal. I guess it’s true. What advice would you offer to your 16 year old self? Hmmmmm, I grew up in a family where we experienced being wealthy, but then it all collapsed in ‘91 and we never got back up. I think the poor mentality stuck to me. I wish I had gotten rid of that faster in my 16 year old self. I also wish I could have found myself a mentor who would have shown me how the real world works instead of the traditional path of going to college and getting a job. I wish I didn’t listen to my parents taking a safe path and pursuing my dreams right away. I did leave my parents home at 18 and moved to a different country. I was able to open my own business in 4 years which allowed me to do what I love. If someone asked you to describe yourself, what would you say? Enthusiastic, positive, talented. Ambitious and tough when needed.

58 Gladys August Issue 2022

Where do you see yourself in ten years? Hopefully, taking our GCS philosophy to different countries and growing it to a global level through opening new schools and keep building a training support system for GCS teachers throughout the world. What are your business goals for the future? Business is fun for me. I like new projects and challenges. I’m an idea generator. The educational industry is very diverse and allows me to challenge myself. My business goals are to try it all! It can go from next LMS to movie making. Your greatest Influence is: My husband. He is a generalist with an engineer’s mind and a child’s curiosity. He never stops learning. He googles and youtubes anything he needs. Every year he learns a new skill, from singing like a metall singer to making custom jewelry in his men’s cave. He recently opened an educational makerspace for teens and it’s doing amazing. I wish I had that type of place when I was a teenager. A place where you can try to make, design and program and everyone is accepted. Tell us about your plans for a retreat center in Costa Rica? Costa Rica is the best playground for kids to learn about sustainability skills. The government supports companies with transparent green footprints. Costa Rica is a place for learning about nature, farming, fishing, surfing, sports, languages. It is an international hub, so many families are moving to Costa Rica from all over the world. And we are part of that community. GCS have partnered up with locals to be able to experience the Pura Vida lifestyle for kids and adults. We plan to bring GCS programs and my husband’s educational makerspace Guild Hall programs there. We are very excited to be able to bring this type of immersive experience to our families. Audrey Grace Marshall

Known For: HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant, Nickelodeon/Paramount+’s The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder

Social Media: Instagram & TikTok @audreygracemarshall

Tell us a little about yourself and your career.

My name is Audrey Grace Marshall and I go by Audrey Grace. I’m 13 years old and I have been acting professionally since I was 7 years old. I’ve done everything from indie films to kids television and a lot in between. My most notable roles are Young Cassie on HBOMax’s “The Flight Attendant” and Vivian Turner on Nickelodeon/Paramount+’s “The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder.

What is your dream project and co-star?

It would be an absolute dream come true to work with either Emma Stone or Anya Taylor Joy. For male co-stars, I’d have to say Ryan Gosling or Joaquin Phoenix. Those 4 actors have such incredible credits behind their names, it would be an honor to work with any one of them.

What’s Next For You?

I’m going to spend my summer showing horses and enjoying some down time. In September, production starts on an indie film that I’m working on in New York, which I’m very excited about. Photographer|Brett Erickson

Known For: Netflix’s 13: The Musical Social Media: Instagram @GabriellaUhl

Tell us a little about yourself and your career:

I’m always singing and I’m obsessed with my dog--he’s a miniature schnauzer and a very distinguished gentleman. I started studying ballet when I was 3 and that’s when I discovered how much I love to perform and be on stage. My favorite winter activity is ice skating with friends. I got my start in a local professional theater when I was 9, then I spent 2 years (the entire run!) with the 1st National tour of School of Rock, where I played the role of Sophie and understudied Tomika, Summer, Marcy, and Shonelle. 13: The Musical is my feature film debut.

Who is your dream co-star?

I am dying to work with Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks becomes the characters he plays. I completely forget I’m watching a movie and I get fully invested in the story he tells. He doesn’t have a type, he can play any character, any time. I think I would learn so much if I had the chance to work with him.

Best advice ever given?

When I was on tour, I got to understudy several other parts and the dance captain, Chris DeAngelis, was my mentor. I was 10 years old and really nervous about getting everything right. He encouraged me by saying “take it one scene at a time.” He always reminded me to just focus on what I had to do next, in that moment. I use this advice for everything in my life--acting or otherwise.

Tell us about your career:

I am an actor because I love it, I don’t really think about it as a career. I think of it more like a hobby and a fun activity to enjoy. I love getting to play pretend, and think about how different characters respond in different situations.

What makes you stand out from others in your field?

I am a happy, energetic girl who loves to dance, sing and play in the mud with my brothers. I love shopping, playing dress up, putting on shows for my family and I also love roughing it outside and climbing trees with my siblings.

What’s Next For You?

I am going to enjoy my summer with my siblings and all of my pets! I just got a new dog and am going to be training it to sit and stay. I can’t wait until the “Ivy and Bean” film series releases on Netflix later this year.

I’m just 14, so it’s hard to guess because there are so many things that could happen. I’d love to keep working in theater, film, maybe even TV. I’ve already had such great experiences that if I never got to again, I could still feel good about the opportunities I’ve had. I can’t wait to see. Gladys August Issue 2022 63

Known For: HBO’s The Time Traveler’s Wife Social Media: Instagram @CaitlinMaeraShorey

Tell us a little about yourself and your career.

I am 11 years old and heading into 6th grade. I live in Pennsylvania with my Dad, 18-year-old brother who recently graduated from High School, and our 2 cats. My oldest brother is a United States Marine. I started acting in local theater and competed in natural pageants at the age 5. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, I decided to try on-camera acting since theater was closed. Right away I fell in love and booked my third ever audition which was for HBO’s “The Time Traveler’s Wife.”

Who inspires you?

My answer is always my mom who passed away last July from Metastatic Breast Cancer. She was amazing and always was strong and encouraging even on her worst days. I also am inspired by my brothers who carry on her legacy; my oldest brother serving our country and my other brother who shows me to be secure in who I am and in stressful hard times to stay focused and maintain straight A’s.

Known For: “Big Nate” on Paramount+ & The Toddler from “Henry Danger” & “Danger Force” on Nickelodeon

Social Media Info: I make daily voice-over and comedy content for 4.5 million fans on TikTok @BenGiroux!

Tell us about your career.

I’m a comedic actor/director best known for voicing Nate Wright on Paramount+’s “Big Nate” and playing The Toddler on Nickelodeon’s “Henry Danger” & “Danger Force”. I also have a production company called Small Red Cape where I direct and produce viral commercials, music videos, and TV pilots. Our #BackToThe90s music video amassed 100 million views, charted on Billboard, and landed my team in Las Vegas with The Backstreet Boys. On the development side, I also write and pitch original TV show concepts with my writing partner.

What makes you stand out from others in your field?

What is your dream project and co-star?

I would love to do something that involves acting and singing with Lin Manual-Miranda. I have the soundtracks to “Hamilton, “tick, tick… BOOM!,” and “Encanto” memorized.

I’d say diversification is the thing that makes me stand-out the most in entertainment. Fifteen years ago, I was just an on-camera TV actor bouncing from guest-star gig to guest-star gig. Now, I’ve expanded into a prolific voice-over career, directing, producing, writing, and more. Whether it’s on-screen, behind the microphone, or behind the camera, I just love making funny stuff with my friends.

Aflé Bijoux

Jewellery inspired by Akan culture

Aflé Bijoux is a luxury jewellery house that creates precious jewels of African genes for the modern liberated woman. Inspired by the centuries-old iconography of the Akan culture of West Africa, Aflé Bijoux’s pieces celebrates women in their supreme splendour. Aflé Bijoux intertwines style with culture to offer women exquisite jewellery that make a powerful aesthetic statement of timeless and opulent elegance, underlined by a spirited philosophy that is rooted in an authentic heritage. From rounded shapes that recall matrilineal interpretations, to figurative forms that express good fortunes, to clean lines that evoke infinity, to soft contours that depict nature, Aflé Bijoux offers palatable collections of precious jewels that include necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, bangles, cuffs, sautoir, anklets and broches. Every piece is a trilogy that speaks to the eyes, heart and mind, evoking wonder in their beauty, and inspiring awe in their connotation and message that transcend cultural boundaries.

Founded in 2010 by Oukassa Wetzel, an artist who grew up surrounded by the strong women custodians of the Court Royale de l ́Indénié of the great Akan kingdom of which she is originated, Aflé Bijoux is her testament of the rich artistic cultural heritage that have shaped her and those that came before her for centuries. This led to her extraordinary blending of the art and symbolism of the rich Akan culture with modern jewellery designs that has defined the DNA of the brand. Aflé Bijoux designs for the woman who is authentic in her persona, oozes self- assurance and owns her womanhood. She is a woman of vision and values who knows who she is and seeks neither validation nor approval. Her cultivated taste is her signature, and her refined style is her template. She is drawn to Aflé Bijoux’s Akan philosophy that places honouring women at its centre; and is enchanted by Aflé Bijoux’s style and choice of precious materials sourced with mindfulness for nature and humans. She is a world citizen who is not defined by age nor social status but by who she is. Aflé Bijoux’s collections are handcrafted in Italy and are available at major stores and retailers in North America, Europe, Middle East and Africa; and on its online flagship e-boutique on

Every piece is a statement piece.

Tell us about yourself and your career:

If I were to tell the story of how my career came to be, I feel it could be a bit underwhelming to some, but brave and spontaneous to others depending completely on who I am talking to. I have managed to make something out of nothing, nothing meaning no formal education and no personal financial backing. I started from the bottom, worked my way up and I still continue to climb daily. Often, I am asked when I started photography. That question does not exactly have a start date. I know that for the past 12 years, my livelihood, happiness, self expression, and adrenaline highs have all been routed from a camera being in my hand. I do not know when it was that my work went from “snapshots” to “photography”. I do, however, remember the feeling of satisfaction I had the first time I took full control of my camera settings and created in-camera art by dragging the shutter. From there, in camera effects and lighting have turned into a true addiction of mine. Another addiction that has brought me to explore outside of my wedding photography career is originality and emotion. As human beings we are all completely different in the most extraordinary ways. I fall in love with every one of the unique pieces that make a person who they are and I found the best way to celebrate that, is to document it for all to see.

Photography, Hair, Make-up|Kate Fleming ,Owner of Beaute Call Makeup

Finding what makes a person unique, a couple unique, a family unique is what drives my creativity. I want to be told a story before I even have the client(s) in my studio. While learning about the subjects I am photographing, I collect little visual scenes inside my head and from there, I put together a storyboard in order to tell their tale through a photograph. Through this method, I learn more about my clients than I ever thought possible. It’s business, but it is most certainly – personal. Everything about what I do is personal and I can not even count on one hand how many treasured and special friendships I have been blessed with while in this field. I am fortunate. I know this for fact and I feel grateful every day.

What makes you stand out in the field from others?

From the beginning I knew that if I were to stand out in any way with my work, the same two words still come to mind: Unapologetic and BOLD. I am not PC, I like to celebrate the parts of ourselves that most may try to keep hidden in the everyday. Sometimes, opening those doors can shock people. Sometimes it can be offensive. At times sad. A lot of the time, enjoyable or even hilarious. It is through the quirks and what we might call flaws that make for a good story to tell.

What is next for you?

Over the past decade or so, weddings have been my main focus. This area of photography will always take up a large part of my heart. I have found to be pulled in the direction of speaking a tale through a unique, one of a kind piece of artwork. No one else in the entire universe will have the same piece with the same lighting, the same creative effects, the same attributes that make a person who they are, and that is what is driving me to make this my next love and genre in my career. Creative Portraiture. I tell your story to the world.

Tell us about your career.

Where to start?! … I’ve been a creator/entrepreneur since 11, which is the age I started posting on YouTube. The combination of a creator x an entrepreneur is the most creative and overwhelming (in a good way) career ever! Developing, from scratch, my teen-skin focused clean cosmetics line has been my most rewarding venture so far. Working with such intelligent Gen Zer’s is so inspiring -- and continues to inspire me! Creating content and expressing myself through my social media and my beauty brand is an incredible opportunity that I am so grateful for -- they both surprise and challenge me every day. Let’s just say I’m never bored (well, sometimes haha).

What makes you stand out from others in your field?

To be completely honest I think everyone has their own unique “superpower.” Mine personally is understanding that teens are constantly overlooked. I can still hear, “she’s just a teenager” when talking about my business. I see deep down each teen has many superpowers bubbling up. I create a safe space where teens are listened to and more importantly heard. I truly believe my Gen Z peers are going to change the world and I want to inspire as many as I can to go big and believe we can!

What’s Next For You?

I just launched Frilliance in 500 Walmart stores. Walmart knows teens are overlooked in the skincare and cosmetic aisles. Our partnership now brings clean, affordable and effective skincare to teens around the country. My focus is to expand with Walmart and to continue to work with teens around the world to inspire each other and build their self-confidence. There are so many ideas brewing in this quite small head of mine, so much to come!

Lisa Leslie, Rob Blake, and J. A. Adande were a few of my celebrity clientele. In 2005 I decided to further my understanding of the human body and its movement by taking prerequisites for medical school, and after being accepted to Duke Medical Center and the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. I chose the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine to further my career as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. After spending 12 years working with various complex medical cases I decided to reach a larger population than I was able to see in person through treating individuals on an online website to address health and wellness through fitness and diet; especially after COVID-19. 76 Gladys August Issue 2022

The webpage will have an overall health and wellness plan with three different personalized levels; specifically, introduction to the mind muscle connection, intermediate program, and advanced/competitive program with specific diet tailored to meet the individual’s needs ;as well as a plan to address pathologies such as; diabetes mellitus type two; heart disease(hypertension, coronary artery disease, hypercholesteremia & hyperlipidemia); psychosocial issues (anxiety, depression, bipolar) menopause, obesity, cancer recovery just naming a few. This will be done by viewing life as an integrated whole. Through a holistic health approach, the plan will incorporate the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of a persons life. The goal is to increase self accountability and self discipline by changing the overall well-being of the individual to live a fuller and more productive life. We will be working as a team to offer better health and wellness with personalized workouts and nutrition plans based on specific pathologies as well as a plan to attain a fit and healthy lifestyle.

What’s next after this is to grow this platform to address all the major life-threatening or life altering pathologies to allow individuals to attain a more productive lifestyle and healthier way of living. The goal is to educate individuals utilizing a holistic approach on connecting the mind body and spirit to achieve this new way of life that will allow them to go beyond many preconceived limitations to live a fuller more productive life. Over the years, Zahraa quickly came to develop her own style, while staying true to her roots but soon noticed there was a gap in the industry when it came to conservative pieces for the modern women. Over the last two years, the brand has expanded from its original line of hijabs and hijab accessories to full wardrobe pieces, offering women everything from closet staples to event lux pieces. “ Jewels of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Treasures”

By Gladys Associate Director of Fashion North East Coast Olga Kwasniewski June 18 of 2022 was marked as a day of grand opening and presentation of Jewels of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Treasures. Over 400 guests in attendance were among first spectators of this unique exhibition that has been displayed publicly for a first time. The initial collection was secularity preserved at Worcester Art Museum since 1920s and it took almost 100 years to condition, recollect, analyze and research every item of this treasure. The collection represents changes of culture over a period and is even indicative of how cultures peak and decline in a cyclical manner. Egypt has a history of golden ages and declines, the golden ages have unity and intermediate periods are more divided between north and south and provincial rulers. Jewels of the Nile showcases 300 objects, ranging from tiny beads and gems to large sculptures from the Museum’s other Egyptian holdings. Through the singular story of Kingsmill and Laura Marrs and their friendship with British archaeologist Howard Carter, the exhibition also delves into the materials and techniques used in the creation of personal adornments, the evolution of style over the centuries, and the early twentieth-century phenomenon of Egyptomania sparked by archaeological exploration in the region. Interactive components and interpretive programs will allow visitors of all ages to explore and experience themselves this fascinating aspect of ancient Egypt. Fellow students of Worcester Polytechnic Institute were collaborating for this exhibition with WAM and created own interactive displays that allowed guests to try on virtually ancient jewelry.

HAUS Away from HOME

Gladys Wine & Dine

The ModernHaus - SOHO by Karen Holly Berliner MODERN HAUS

It has been quite the long and difficult haul for all of us, given recent events. As we emerge out of our ever changing protocols along with life, travel and all social limitations, we were urged to stay put in quarantine mode for such a long stretch, we can now finally exhale a collective sigh of relief and resume; dip a proverbial toe into the water via dining, travel, work, socializing and life as a whole. What better way to break the ice than to travel to a destination escape, that not only touts itself as a haus aka residential-style hotel for a seamless transition from home to haus (per its fitting name), but absolutely lives up to it with all of the creature comforts one could wish for, escalated to a high level of luxury unsurpassed, while still maintaining a comfortable at home vibe. Located on a quaint side street off of Sixth Avenue in NYC’s Soho district, enter ModernHaus and absorb it in its entirety, from its location among other stately cast-iron buildings and authentic cobblestone streets, to its deliberate nod to its artsy neighborhood dynamic. Notice the splendor of the art adorning its walls, showcasing many of the most influential icons of the 20th century, the art-clad interiors making this building feel more like a collector’s loft than a towering Manhattan hotel. Check in if you please, and enjoy a “turn-key” room awaiting you, featuring opulent king-sized beds, walk-in showers with rainfall heads, bath tubs resplendent with Le Labo bath products, all high-end accommodations and amenities. Be wowed by the floor-to-ceiling windows, which show off its skyscrapers proudly, including the breathtaking Freedom Tower, all buildings lit up at night with the lights of many workaholics still at task. A rooftop pool is hard to come by, agreed? Find your pool and full oasis along with it at ModernHaus’ top-floor Jimmy, a sleek, mahogany-clad bar with panoramic views of lower Manhattan, complete with a pool deck to lounge. With decor inspired by Picasso’s Blue period, JIMMY has a cozy yet lively atmosphere, with both vintage and contemporary furniture and a roaring fireplace, all surrounded by 14’ windows with panoramic views of Midtown, Wall Street, the Hudson River, and the bridges spanning the East River. For further lounge access, Jumpin Jacks on the second floor is an all-day eatery that transforms into a lounge at night.

As for a magical and tasty dining experience, visit Veranda restaurant by Michelin-starred chef George Mendes in collaboration with restaurateur David Rabin and catering and events group Abigail Kirsch. Set beneath a retractable greenhouse, this dining room allows for flexible indoor/ outdoor dining, with several indoor and outdoor cocktail area seating options. Enjoy such signatures as the hummus with tomato, chickpeas, grilled naan, crudité herbs and flowers and falafel or the steamed mussels with garlic, cilantro, grilled chorizo and olive oil. For an extraordinary treat, the duck rice features traditional duck leg confit, seared breast, chorizo, black olives, orange and crispy duck skin giving it a contemporary flair. Noteworthy is their in-room dining program, perfect for an impromptu breakfast in bed. Why not treat yourself? Located steps up from Veranda with its own entrance on 6th Avenue, The Back Bar at Veranda features several open-air terraces, adorned with pendant lights and a fireplace, with both high-top and table seating. Sip a signature cocktail such as the wanderlust; mezcal, green chartreuse, absinthe, coconut and lime. For a real treat for rose wine fans, the Rose Flight features three tastings of select roses. An elegant option for events, The Signature Room features an arched wood ceiling, velvet seating, a private bar and a skylight under which an evergreen olive tree stands and warms the space perfectly. As far as extra accoutrements, ModernHaus Soho is loaded to the brim with those. For example, WundaMat @ ModernHaus Rooftop Pool offers Pilates for all levels. As we all know, brunch is beloved to many. In that spirit, Chef George Mendes presents a seasonal menu that pairs perfectly with inspired cocktails to be savored under Veranda’s glass pergola. Sip your stress away and take in the spectacular atmosphere. Getting restless? SoHo is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in NYC, offering sublime shopping, dining and cultural experiences. Exit the building and just simply start walking in any direction! Gladys August Issue 2022 93

Netflix’s Selling Sunset’s: New Season, Glamorous LA Homes!

Whether one binge-watches Selling Sunset for the glamour of LA’s The Oppenheim Group real estate agent lifestyles, the celebrity clients, or the stunning listings, the series is one of Netflix’s most popular shows. Season five of the series premiered in April. With the mega-hit TV show on their side, The Oppenheim Group gets many of Southern California’s best home listings. One of their newest is located on Benedict Canyon Drive above the Sunset Strip, which takes full advantage of the home’s views and California outdoor lifestyle. The ultra-contemporary home is listed for $22.995 million by one of the newest cast members and agents of The Oppenheim Group, Emma Hernan, who is also an entrepreneur in her own right with her empanada food factory in Boston. High in the LA hills, the 11,043-square-foot home is sited on a promontory with stunning canyon views. Walled and gated, the house has lawns and lush landscaping for privacy and colorful sunset views from its rooftop outdoor living area with fireplace. The dual living rooms are almost a copy of the rooftop with the fireplace and spaciousness, but with the weather protection of floor-to-ceiling glass walls that continue the views. Sprawled across its three acres, the two-story house has five bedrooms, eight baths, a gym

and office - both with glass walls, and a music room where the surrounding glass walls will inspire even the least musically inclined. Indoor water features calm the lower level with the gentle sound of falling water. The second floor is devoted to the primary suite with fireplace, balcony, two walk-in dressing rooms, and a bath with a steam shower. A grand house for entertaining, the spacious kitchen, open to the outdoors, will welcome an impromptu party that can be carried to the pool terrace. A secondary kitchen will be helpful to caterers for larger events. Having been so successful with the Sunset Strip office of The Oppenheim Group, Jason and his twin brother, Brett, have opened a Newport Beach office in Orange County with a new group of agents, who according to the show’s preview teasers, are just as feisty as the Hollywood agency. Selling the OC is currently being filmed but with no release date as of now. The listing agent is Emma Hernan of The Oppenheim Group, West Hollywood. FAVORITE APP: BuzzFeed! It’s a great place to get all of my entertainment news, fun quizzes, best buys, and healthy doses of world news. It’s my one stop shop for staying in the know. MY FIRST JOB WAS… Ice-cream server at Friendly’s in Connecticut. I had the best time making my own crazy sundaes. THE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My friend Krys Marshall who currently stars on Apple TV’s, “For All Mankind.” We have the best conversation about personal life and career. Krys has experienced a lot in her journey as an actress, and because of the knowledge that she shares with me, I am able to navigate my own path a little easier. MY FAVORITE DESTINATION IS ... New York city. It’s still one of my favorite places in the world! It has the best food, the best entertainment, and so much diversity. I grew up in Connecticut, and any chance I had to sneak away, I would! Even now living in California, I still find ways to make my way back to the big apple. THIS SUMMER I WON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT... My “Black Girl Sunscreen.” It’s so luxurious yet gentle on my skin and offers the right amount of SPF protection without leaving a white cast behind. It’s part of my everyday routine, but during the summer I make sure to never leave home without it for extra sun protection. I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… Finishing my second bedroomturned closet! It’s a project I started some months ago and never really got around to adding some finishing touches. I’ve got all of my hand bags visible as well as my shoes, which is super helpful when getting dressed in a hurry. Now, it’s just a matter of finding creative ways to use the rest of my accessories as decor.
