Love, Grace, Gratitude brings Hope & Inspiration to the Holidays! After we all made it through 2020 and surviving, we wanted to take a deeper meaning here at Gladys. So, we decided to produce the following editions this year: LOVE, GRACE, GRATITUDE & now our HOPE & INSPIRATIONAL ISSUE to reflect our focus in bringing you heart-warming and special content. When I launched GLADYS back in 2009, our tagline was and still is “A Magazine dedicated to anyone who has been Inspired to pursue their Dreams by someone they Love” and as you all know my inspiration was my Mother Gladys Patrick. Our Inspirational Issue has always been one of my personal favorites - maybe because I love the Holiday season and I love sharing the inspiring stories from people around the world. This edition is no exception! Our Cover Story features Deb Chandler who we have named as our Powerhouse Publicist of the Year! What a Boss Lady she is representing clients from around the world. Photographed by the incomparable Bryan Griffin and interviewed by Cutter Chastain for this month’s cover story, Cutter described Deb as a collision of old Hollywood glamour, meets Washington DC polite society mixed with a mega dose of southern girl. After reading her stor y, I think you’ll agree with me that Deb should be described as a SURVIVOR & INSPIRATION to all! A Collection of Hairstyles Inspired by Princess Diana and How She Could Look Today

As we celebrated the 60th birthday of Princess Diana this year, we were wondering what would she look like? What would her style be now? How would she take on today’s trends? To honor her iconic look, celebrity hairstylist Nick Stenson (@nickstenson) has gathered a collection of hairstyles that would capture the “People’s Princess” in modern day looks, sharing how we can continue her legacy of style.

Nick suggests this style ideal for dinner or the theatre. The color would not be ideal but it would show off her elegance while still making a statement. This was created by Ammon Carver. “Take a look at the simple, almost regal styling,” Carver notes. “The style is simple and sophisticated, not flashy or trying too hard, which are all qualities that I find The Princess inspires to this day.”

“This hair color is EXACTLY the way I believe Princess Diana would be wearing her hair, if she were around these days,” Nick Stenson explains. “The length is a little longer than we saw her wearing her hair, but the texture and movement within the style are the same. Using a large round brush and some texture spray, you can replicate this same soft texture too.”

Nick Stenson selected curls as a style Princess Diana would love. It expresses freedom which is something she strove for. This hairstyle was created by Ammon Carver who styled this forward-facing look by allowing the loose curls to fall forward onto the forehead for a balanced mushroom shape. Recently, I had the honor of catching up with Alex’s daughter, Maria Soldier. Maria is the Executive Director at Alex Soldier and has been by her father’s side from the very beginning. She describes her father’s jewelry as “passion in detail” and shares how “he draws his inspiration from everyday moments that are never ordinary to him.” Maria expresses how her father’s incredible talent has “captured the hearts of leading editors, style experts and buyers who often proclaim him as one of the most innovative visionaries of our time.” 26 Gladys Hope & Inspirational Issue 2021

MARIA, I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY BECAME IMMERSED IN THE WORLD OF JEWELRY. CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY CAME TO AMERICA AND THE JOURNEY OF HOW THE ALEX SOLDIER JEWELRY LINE BEGAN?

“We came to America in a rather transitional time in history, which was the beginning of 1991, half a year before the Soviet Union fell apart. It was like arriving on a different planet, everything was so different than what we were used to in the old world. We literally had to start our new life from scratch. My parents had to work endless hours in order to sustain our family, but we pulled through those tough years as a family and finally in 1996 dad launched his first independent jewelry collection that made its debut at the Jewelers of America International show in New York’s Javits Center.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE GETTING TO MEET PRINCESS CHARLENE OF MONACO AND PRINCE ALBERT II OF MONACO? "It was like a fairy tale that happened almost a decade ago, time flies so fast! We were introduced to them at the Princess Grace Awards in New York City. In 2009, Princess Grace Foundation-USA commissioned Alex Soldier to create Princess Grace Awards, which are bestowed onto the Awards recipients at the annual Awards Gala. A singular, dramatic statue is presented to the Prince Rainier III Award recipient each year: a celebrity in the arts who has made it his and her personal mission to give back.”

When the legendary JA Show Director Mort Abelson saw my dad's collection he said the following: ‘you’re extremely talented and will achieve great things if you’re patient enough, because your vision is so far ahead of our time that it will take people a while to understand it as it often happens to many great artists.’” WHAT MAJOR EVENTS CATAPULTED YOU AND YOUR FAMILY INTO YOUR DESTINY WITH ALEX SOLDIER? “I think that one of the major breakthroughs for us was when Neiman Marcus started carrying our jewelry in 2006. I still remember that day vividly well when I cold-called Eric Ford, Neiman Marcus Precious Jewelry Buyer and asked him to stop by our booth at an upcoming trade show. He did stop by, loved the collection and the rest is history. It really catapulted our brand into a stratosphere of new opportunities and exposed my dad's talent to an international audience.” CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE UNIQUE TECHNIQUES YOUR FATHER HAS DEVELOPED? “He invented his own tools to apply a multitude of his remarkable textures onto the metal that are intricately applied in several layers, making the final outcome a true work of art. He works with precious metal just as a painter with a canvas or a writer with a manuscript. But texture is just one of his many inventions among many others, including his extensive collection of precious mini-sculptures with a myriad of details in them. Alex Soldier’s jewelry and sculptures are composed of so many intricate components that you often need a magnifying glass to be able to see them all. Each design is about structure, proportions, details, texture and composition. It’s like a Rubik’s Cube – each piece dependent on the next one to compose the whole.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST FAVORITE TREASURED PIECES OF JEWELRY FROM ALEX SOLDIER? “I love all of my dad's creations. My most treasured ones are the ones that my dad made for my birthdays. One was of course Codi The Snail which I wear everyday, the other is a diamond heart pendant. A Zodiac pendant that he made for my zodiac sign of an Aquarius and Amethyst Cocktail ring that features my birthstone. I treasure and cherish each one of these special gifts as if they were my children.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR FATHER'S PIECES SPEAK TO PEOPLE? “He puts his heart and soul into making every single piece of his one of a kind bejeweled masterpieces and it really speaks volumes to people when they get to see it and wear it. A lot of our clients become collectors of his work, as it brings them joy and ultimate satisfaction of having a work of art that speaks the language of eternity and soothes the soul.”

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON TODAY FOR SOME OF YOURLATEST COLLECTIONS? “My dad is constantly working on something new. It's always several different pieces at once. Right now he's developing a new collection of dainty pendants and charms that would be perfect for people that like to wear smaller-scale pieces.”

WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE THIS INSPIRATION INTO THE ALEX SOLDIER JEWELRY LINE? “I would say that kindness, love and compassion is what inspires me the most and this is what I try to incorporate into our daily work ethic at our office, starting from supporting sustainability to implementing a plastic-free environment as much as possible on a daily basis. We're also closely involved with a few charities and support our local community as much as possible. Giving back is what gives us inspiration to move forward.” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES WHILST BEING ON THIS INCREDIBLE JOURNEY WITH ALEX SOLDIER JEWELRY? “There are just so many wonderful memories and so many people that I'm grateful to for teaching me and helping me become what I am today. That being said, the journey never stops and life is always about this adventurous journey, not the destination.”

Meet Deb Chandler Powerhouse Publicist of the Year and One of Gladys Magazine's Most Inspiring People!! Gladys Inspiration Interview written by Cutter Chastain

It is a cloudy 65 degree morning in Alexandria, Virginia; a Saturday morning early in October. Part of me is a little nervous, I'm on a deadline with the editor for this cover story. I'm waiting on what is promised to be the perfect cup of coffee. I need it. It's 7:30 a.m. And...here I am sitting on a spacious balcony overlooking trees, surrounded by potted pink begonias. Clay cherubs perch along the balcony ledge, as though they may be guarding this place where I sit. I hear contemporary Christian music playing in the background. At this moment, Deb Chandler makes her entrance with 2 piping hot cups of caffine, followed by 2 very cute Pomeranians! The Poms, Jackson and Jillian are part of the package. Chandler is no stranger to our Gladys readers. She wears more than one hat comfortably. Deb is well known for serving three terms on the Board of Directors for the National Network to End Dometic Violence, as a business woman, and for her talents as a brand manager. Part of the management team behind the luxury woman's brand Dur Doux, she is not dressed for the day. Less than two weeks ago, she had her entire signoid colon removed. This morning she is dressed comfortably for our interview. Admittedly, we all have our definitions of comfortable. Let's say, Deb Chandler is not wearing sweats. Large cream colored Gucci glasses frame her face. I cannot detect any makeup. The blond hair piled into a messy knot atop her head; she is wearing a matching pink gown, robe and fox fur slides. Ms. Chandler's idea of comfortable attire for what I expected would be an eye opening interview. I am not disappointed. She is a collision of old Hollywood glamour, meets Washington DC polite society, mixed with a mega dose of southern grit.

G ladys Cover Story ME: YOU LOOK AMAZING AFTER A MAJOR SURGERY. HOW IS THE HEALING GOING? DEB: I'm shocked at how well I'm doing. This is a 30 day recovery. Everyone knows me. I'll do it in 28. (She winks at me.) ME: YOU SEEM TO HAVE CREATED A SANCTUARY IN YOUR HOME. DEB: Yes. Very much so. Everyone's home should be their safe place. ME: I AGREE. HAS THAT ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE FOR YOU? DEB: Yes, surroundings fueled by my creative side, allow me to feel safe, and bring beauty and peace into my life. Comfort is a necessity. That sounded a bit more earthy crunchy than I intended, and not completely true. ME: HOW SO? DEB: Home is a safe place now. Yet, growing up, and times during my adult life home has not been a safe place. I insist on it now. ME: BOTH FEET, JUMPING IN, HOW HAVE THOSE TIMES BROUGHT YOU TO WHO YOU ARE NOW. TODAY? DEB: Jumping in... like so many, I've reflected on this with Covid over the past 18+ months. Thinking none of us should waste a moment of our lives, wherever that takes us. My approach, we get to do this life thing once, as far as I know. Better get to living. Better get to being happy with who you are inside. People will attempt to define you, but you are the only person, who knows how this turns out. So many people get in their own heads, and won't allow themselves to push forward. First and foremost, we ALL have to get out of our own way. Facts: There is a lot of shit in everyone's life, when you start peeling back the layers. Life is messy. BUT... I also know there is so much to love and cherish in this life. Right there in the middle of the "shit show", and if you blink you'll miss all the good stuff! You best be patient and paying attention. You don't want to miss the best part. ME: WOW. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WRITING A BOOK? DEB: You are not the first person who has suggested that I write a book. We will see. People keep throwing around words like "inspiration," I find it amusing. I'm here by the grace of God. ME: I DETECT A SOUTHERN ACCENT, BUT CAN'T PINPOINT A STATE. WHERE WERE YOU RAISED? DEB: That's always a loaded question. We, moved alot growing up. I was born in Kansas, then raised in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, and settled in Virginia. The family was from Louisiana and Texas. Both my mom and my dad were from Central Louisiana. Vernon Parrish. My parents attended school together in rural Louisiana; an area known for logging camps, farms, and the U.S. Army post. Not a lot of opportunity. My grandfather forced my dad to leave high school before graduating to work. We were from well respected families in the community; yet, life was hard after the Depression. To clarify that was the Depression in the 20's! Everyone had large families, and putting food on the table was critical. What is considered abuse today was discipline, and expected. A spare the rod, spoil the child mentality. Sooo, being whipped in the field with the reigns from a plow mule was not uncommon. Both parents were raised with the fallout for what their parents experienced. All of our lives are much more generational that we can imagine. ME: SOUNDS LIKE A HARD LIFE. HOW DID THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES TOUCH YOUR LIFE? DEB: Yes, it was a hard life. And, yes their circumstances molded much of my life. My brothers lives too. Daddy made his choices and escaped, by joining the Air Force, serving in Korea during the war. He loved serving his country and excelled in his military career. Mom made her escape too. After several jobs, she landed a job as a clerk typist for the Air Force. The families pressured the two to marry. What family viewed as a perfect union was everything, but a good marriage. 40 Gladys Hope & Inspirational Issue 2021

Tragically, my father's military career was cut short after a drunk driver passed a stopped school bus. The accident was a turning point. In a split second our lives changed forever. Mom was thrown across a four lane highway holding my baby brother, landing in a concrete ditch. I slept through the accident, waking to my dad bleeding to death and strangers attempting to get me out of the car. I was four. Life for all of us changed that day, even for my younger brothers who had not been born. Saying we all lived is a cliff note. I have wondered on occasion, what happened to the drunk driver, and suspect nothing. My Dad? Physically, he lost his arm. He came close to bleeding out. Then he almost died from a bad blood transfusion after surgery. He lost his career. Mostly, my father's spirit died that day. From that day forward, our lives were thrust into a daily hell that did not let up for decades. Six people's lives were filled with drug addiction, alcoholism, domestic abuse, child neglect, sexual abuse, guns, theft, paranoia, violence, police, hospitals and rehabs. Try as "they" may, no one managed to stop the rollercoaster. With all the tenacity we could manage we each developed a life filled with what we did not want in our lives. ME: HOW DID YOU GET OUT? HOW DID YOU ESCAPE? DEB: We didn't. We simply lived through it. Remember me saying life is messy. I believe that each of us developed unique survival skills. For me, I caught a Greyhound bus, married a jazz musician. Divorced. Moved to Greece, became a print model. Dated enough to know what I didn't want in a man and in my life. Got an education. I chose to be a survivor, not a victim. We all did. God gave me the ability to see others. To look deeper than skin. To see the pain, and the joy. ME: HOW SO? DEB: I was able to recognize early on that other people had pain in their lives. Most of the time I felt their pain was worse than mine, or I'd been in their shoes. It's called developing empathy and compassion for those around you, and a larger world. ME: HOW DO YOU VIEW YOUR LIFE. DEB: My life has been pretty damn easy. It's been exciting. I've had so many amazing opportunities, and it's not over. I'm on a roll. I'm filled with gratitude for everything I have accomplished. I like who I am. I'm happy. My life continues to be a gift. You can't dwell in the past, but you can take those life lessons and enrich your life and the lives of others. I have a chest chocked full to tools to be the best at anything I choose to tackle in this life. I have a love hate relationship with titles, because none of us are one thing in this life. If we each can develop the patience to let this life rollout, the rewards are beyond anything we can imagine. My best advice. Don't hurry. Everything falls into place, given time. Timing is everything. ME: THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN EASY AND PERFECT APPROACH TO LIFE. DEB: Oh, hell no! It's not perfect. Life is a learning experience. We must be open to learning every day. It's not perfect by any means. I'm not perfect. I make mistakes everyday I take a breath. I do try not to hurt or disappoint people. Sometimes I fail. I have to extend apologies. There are things that are nonnegotiable for me. I can be hard, and unyielding. For instance, abuse on any level, I will not tolerate in my life. No is a word I've learned how to use. ME: WHAT DO YOU MEAN? DEB: The word NO, is a powerful word, in that, it can be very final...or, it can be a door opener. Perhaps, I needed to be clearer in my request, because you didn't understand the importance. Then, I smile. We both laughed, and finished our coffee. BTW, she made me promise to do another interview in 30 years, when she's 95.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR LIFE? Truly my biggest inspiration is my faith. I’ve always believed in God, but going through this Covid pandemic, I had to really lean in to my faith much more to find peace. Through that, I became very clear on what my purpose is for my life and how I want to navigate my next chapter. I’ve done 25 years of research in different teachings of human behavior and chose to become a Life Transformation Strategist as well as the founder and creator of Del Pozzo Jewelry. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Resilient, Empathetic, Blessed WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? The satisfaction that I can achieve anything I want, that I put my mind to, so that I can make a difference and leave a legacy on earth. I want to change the world, any way I can to create a better place through Coaching, Speaking and designing beautiful jewelry. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Success to me is not defined just monetarily. Success is the joy you feel when you’ve made a difference. When my clients learn what they didn’t know they didn’t know, to move forward powerfully in their lives, that’s success. When a jewelry client tells me that wearing my jewelry makes them feel good, that’s success. When my daughter hugs me and tells me she loves me, that’s success. When you feel like you make a difference (large or small), that’s success. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? This one will make you laugh. My husband James said to me one time “Tanya, it’s not always about you.” I literally had to stop and truly realize that most things aren’t about me. If someone was curt with me, maybe they were having a bad day. If I didn’t book an acting job, I wasn’t right for it, etc. Overtime and what I continually work on is not taking things personally. The inner child that we all have reads things like a child, what does a child think? The world revolves around them. My mind (all of our minds), tell us all sorts of things that aren’t remotely true, (you’re not good enough, you can’t do this, you’re not lovable, etc.), but if we can tune into to our spirit (higher self), that’s the truth. That’s where true love, compassion and understanding operate out of. If you are faced with a situation and you feel yourself reacting, stop and distinguish where it’s actually coming from. Once you know, you can shift. This is some of the coaching I work with my clients on.

HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVERTIME? My perspective has changed drastically. I think everyone’s has. Collectively, the entire world is suffering a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I now see the simplicity or ignorance, pre pandemic of taking things for granted such as being around lots of people, we weren’t worried about a virus. The tremendous loss of life, jobs, financial crises, climate change and social isolation is literally remapping society at this moment. But through this time, I also feel we have a huge opportunity to truly focus on what matters in each of us. We have the opportunity to create a better world with more awareness, compassion and empathy. The more we can collectively raise our frequency through Love, not division and judgement, the better opportunity we have to heal as a society and that will also help heal our planet. The time is now, what do you choose? This is what led me to create “Spiritually Inspired Coaching”. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I’ll be doing group and private coaching through “Spiritually Inspired Coaching”. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR LIFE? There are so many wonderful people in my life who have inspired me to follow my dreams and be the best ME that I can be. This has been so inspirational to me, because confidence and encouragement were things I have always struggled with. I found myself in a very dark place several years ago. I was struggling with severe anxiety, depression, migraine headaches and several other health challenges. I wasn’t sleeping, living on prescriptions and caffeine to get through my days. Thoughts of ending my life crossed my mind on several occasions, but the thoughts of leaving my twin sons and the grief my mom would endure were what kept me from following through. I turned to prayer for help and guidance. Not only did God lead me to exactly what I needed to get my physical and mental health back on track, but along with my health journey came a huge family of amazing, loving and supportive people. Honestly, they are who inspire me. Anytime I’m starting to feel down I think of the words they’ve told me: “Don’t stop, don’t quit”, “Love always wins”, “Follow your dream” “Believe it can be you” These words have become my mantra and they inspire me to do better and be better every single day. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Mother, Loving, Thriving WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? My family keeps me motivated to keep reaching for my dreams. My mission and my passion is to help others become the best version of themselves through nutrition and better health, because that is what pulled me through many years ago when I felt lost and stuck in darkness. My passion to pay it forward and help others is the drive behind what I do. Receiving phone calls and messages from people I’ve helped start their own health journeys, telling me things like “I actually look forward to waking up in the mornings now”, and “thank you for always posting on Facebook, you motivated me to change my life”, messages like these are the fuel to my engine. Knowing I can help others out there who may be feeling the way that I USED to feel, motivates me to keep sharing my story every single day. I truly believe God brought something into my life when I needed it most as a tool to change my life, which it has ten fold. And keeping that “gold” to myself would be selfish. I want to teach my boys that helping others is so incredibly important. I want them to witness first hand how what I do is impacting so many people, and I hope they grow up wanting to do the same. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? To me, success isn’t determined by the number of friends or followers or “likes” you have on social media. It’s not determined by how big your home is, or how many fancy cars you have parked in your garage. I also do not define success by how much money you make or what’s in your bank account. Because none of that matters if you’re not truly happy. If you wake up each morning with a roof over your head that you’re proud of, food on your table at each meal, God in your life, and you’re surrounded by family and true friends who love and support you unconditionally, then you, my friend, are successful. If you have the FREEDOM to live your life as you wish and help others along the way, then you are successful. If you can go to bed each night and be proud of what you accomplished in the day, and be proud of everything you have because you worked hard for it, that is success.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? Dreams do come true, and believe it can be you. Something I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older is to never let the negative words of others determine how you feel about yourself. Growing up in a very small town I was picked on and made fun of a lot in school because of my looks. Called names like “Bucky Beaver” and “Bubble Butt”, being serenaded with “how much wood can a woodchuck chuck”, and girls “whispering” (loudly) as I walked by, saying things like “what, does she think she’s skinny or something??” I allowed those negative words to chip away at my confidence and self worth for a long time. And up until about 4 years ago, I still did. I was extremely self conscious. Filled with self hatred, constantly worrying what others thought of me, becoming a hermit because I was afraid of being seen in public. Always feeling like I was being judged or made fun of for something “wrong” with me, and always feeling like I was never good enough. Then one day about 4 years ago something clicked. I started caring more about what I felt, how I felt about ME and less of others opinions. I started THRIVING in life, and my confidence and self love continue to grow every day!! I never in a million years would expect to be in a prestigious fashion magazine, yet here I am! HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVERTIME? I’ll admit that years ago, I was a bitter person and in my darkness, all I saw was a world full of ugly, negativity and uncertainty. However through my journey, breaking down my self-built walls and changing my own personal perspective, I’ve realized that there is still a lot of good in this world if you just allow yourself to see it. Love always wins, and positivity is a ripple effect. Say hi and smile at a stranger. Compliment others as often as you can. Do random acts of kindness whenever possible, no matter how big or how small. One kind gesture can change someone’s day and bring a smile to their face. Spread love and kindness wherever you go, and you’ll find that the world around you is a brighter, more beautiful place. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? Honestly I’m not sure! I give every day to God, I trust that He’s in control! But I do believe there are many wonderful things in my future and my family’s future! I’m just going to keep paying it forward and sharing the gift of Thrive, live each day to the fullest, and be the best mom, wife, daughter and friend that I can possibly be! Life is a GIFT! Enjoy each day - that’s why it’s called the PRESENT.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR LIFE? All the patients out there who struggle the same way I do, but without the background and resources I am privileged to have. Even with the pain, the hassle, the fear of what comes next, they somehow manage to make lives for themselves. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Healthcare experience powerhouse WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? The absolute belief that patients need a seat at the healthcare stakeholder table, especially the healthcare policy table. There are a few places where they allow us in the room, such as some clinical research studies and a few hospital patient and family engagement boards, but to have the most efficient, effective care, patients need to be involved in every aspect of the healthcare discussion. To borrow a phrase from the disability movement, Nothing About Us Without Us, right?

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? ​ or the blog, if I have managed to help just one person feel less isolated or to speak up for themF selves, that’s success. It’s harder to be specific about what a successful consultancy would look like. Getting people to take my patient lived experience seriously? Making progress in places that haven’t invited patients in before? It’s a little amorphous, but I will know it when I feel it. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? One of my best friends gave me a bracelet that says Keep F***ing Going on the inside. I wear it everyday. HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVER TIME? I​ balance 13 chronic and recurring conditions. I wear a device, but otherwise they’re all invisible. I never hid what I had to do to maintain my health and I was always happy to answer questions, but I never went out of my way to talk about them. Then I was invited to speak to a class of medical students, and I realized ladys for the first time that all this experience that I never sought could be used to help people. It was life-changing.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? Working on making my healthcare experience consultancy success. I have given myself a year to work as hard as I can, and then I will assess where I am. I can’t find where anyone else has tried something quite like this, and the risk makes me nervous, but I have to try.

She has been featured on the cover of Forbes more times than on Sports Illustrated, and she recently shattered glass ceilings with kathy ireland Worldwide being named the 15th most powerful brand in the world, the highest ranking for a woman-owned and individually-owned company, ” said Dr. Brian Grim, chair of the business selection committee for the upcoming IRF Summit. “And now it is fitting that Kathy be recognized for her activism in support of all people persecuted for their faith and beliefs around the world,” adds Dr. Grim. In August 2014, ISIS militants swept through the Sinjar region of northern Iraq in a deliberate attempt to annihilate the Yezidis and other religious minorities, employing brutal tactics including mass executions, rape, and sexual enslavement of young women. As this horrific genocide unfolded, Kathy not only lobbied Congress to respond, but responded herself by supporting women-led initiatives to

rescue Yezidis and address the hatred and prejudices that created an environment where such atrocities could occur. To this day, almost 3,000 Yezidi women and children remain missing and almost 300,000 Yezidis still live in displacement camps in northern Iraq. Kathy’s engagement did not stop when the genocide did. On August 22, Kathy cohosting with the Religious Freedom & Business Foundation a charity auction with all proceeds to directly provide business and livelihood opportunities for Yezidi women struggling to recover from the genocide. “It is a tremendous honor and very humbling to receive this honor,” says Ms. Ireland. “It is our duty and responsibility, for all of us, to fight for everyone’s right to religious freedom, no matter what religion you choose to practice. It is basic human rights. Thank you Dr. Brian Grim and everyone at the IRF Summit for bringing attention to the plight of so many who are deprived of the basic right to religious freedom, and for working tirelessly to combat those who try to inflict this cruelty upon others.” Kathy received the Business IRF Hero Award at the Closing Dinner of the 2021 IRF Summit, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. The IRF Summit brought together a bi-partisan and broad coalition that passionately supports religious freedom around the globe for the three day in-person event held in Washington D.C in July with a virtual option for participation. When she looks at me, and smiles that smile, she steals my heart on unexplainable levels. She commands the room. I know her soul. The race is on! THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Force of Nature WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? The ability to build something significant. It doesn't hurt, if there's a little cash involved, but the money is irrelevant, if I'm not doing what I love and believe in. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Making it to Heaven to find out God's only making me clean toilets (with a toothbrush) in other people's mansions 1 day a week, rather than the 3 I'm expecting! OH my wicked ways and smart mouth. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR LIFE? My mom inspired me the most. My mother worked so hard to support her family as a single mom on a hairdresser “salary”. She lived during an era permeated in a culture in which women were still somewhat repressed from career success and frowned upon to be adventurous and out living their best lives. My mother once told me that for most of her life she felt not heard and entirely not seen. Even with that, my mother embraced this

adventurous spirit and so badly wanted to explore the world. I once compared her to a “Princess version of Amelia Earhart”. My mom had an inner warrior and fighting spirit and was also a proper lady through and through. She always came dressed for the party, planned the most beautiful affairs, was the finest entertainer, and brought joy to others through her generosity in doing these things that she loved the most. My mom wanted so much more for me in my life and, as her only daughter, she wanted most for me to conquer the world and focus on the greatness within; she knew it existed. For many years, I did not. I recently wrote about her in “Women Who Shine”. My story was really about her quiet confidence that taught me to be strong, to be kind, to never allow myself to be a victim, to be loyal, and to always look at things from a vastly different perspective than most. Most interestingly, my tolerant and fiercely protective mother taught me all of this not by her words but through her silence. I know this sounds a little puzzling, and in some respects, it was. As I reflected on my upbringing, I realized that it was through her calm and quiet demeanor, when most others would blubber, that she spoke the loudest, with the most simplicity and with the most incredible conviction. She just observed life in a way that was wholly internalized. I think discreet is a good way to describe her point of view. When I asked my mother for help, she always gave me a space to say what was on my mind without judgment. It really wasn’t until a terrible divorce that I realized just how much she meant to me and how much she influenced me. At that point in my life, it was because of so many profound moments, I realized just how deeply she just wanted to be loved, accepted, and respected. And in the twinkling magic that is clarity, I was astonished to realize that she and I were very much one in the same. I, too, have always just wanted to be loved and accepted and respected. And this inspires me. At the core of our being, most of us just want a sense of belonging and to feel loved and cared for. If I can offer a story, a laugh, or a moment


for someone else to realize that essentially we are mostly the same creatures looking to be loved, respected, and admired and in turn that provides for the space and perspective for even one person to be changed then my life becomes far more meaningful than words can describe. I am sad that my mother died without knowing how much she inspires me; so I work hard every day to make her proud and to be the living legacy that she dreamed of for herself. I do this every day because, frankly, I had no idea just how much she inspired me until she was gone. And it is from that seat of understanding this human condition that I always look for ways to inspire others. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? “Passionate, Independent, and Magnetic”. Also strong, funny, courageous and kind. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? Every single day I wake up to do the best job possible to be the best version of myself in all aspects of my life: work, personal, relationships, spiritual, and physical. When I AM that every day, it becomes so easy to find ways to instill that spirit for those whom I love and admire. There is something purely magical about working hard to achieve goals – especially when those goals are in complete alignment with who you are. And from that vantage point, the magic always comes full circle for me. And knowing that it’s a cycle in which everything I put out there always comes back means that it’s always worth it. Always. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Waking up every day knowing that I have the ability to have a profound and positive impact on someone else. Whether is through mentoring a new agent in my career, or listening to a friend and helping him/her work through a challenge, envisioning the life I want to lead and seeing it all manifest, learning every day, connection with others, lending a helping hand. In a nutshell, greeting each day with joy and gratitude defines success to me, and in whatever way that unfolds for me. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? My Nana used to say whether you worry about it or whether you don’t, the outcome will be the same so don’t bother with worry because worry is a disease that will kill you slowly but surely. So, I just don’t worry about things. Mostly. I had a major health crisis last year and was terrified of what was happening to my body, I had been diagnosed with a very rare blood disorder that was literally killing me from the inside out. I was in the ER and all the doctors asked me if I had my final life wishes in order. That was a moment when worry could have completely destroyed me and eventually killed me. I was definitely afraid of what was happening but I did not worry. Instead, I chose to re-adjust my lifestyle AGAIN; I had just lost 100 pounds and was dealing with some additional autoimmune issues. I chose to find a really good doctor even though I had always been a woman who felt she could conquer health challenges solely through nutrition, exercise, and proper supplementation. However, to deal with this life-threatening illness I chose to embrace and respect the medical community. I chose to remain positive and focus on wins. I prayed and asked others to pray for me. Initially, I was on 70 mg of prednisone a day for a period of time and worked with an amazing Oncologist. I refused to allow my body to fail me after losing all the weight and working hard to be a good person. And within six months the condition was “healed” and in full remission. Call it a miracle, if you want but for me it was because I never worried. I acted in faith that I had the ability to heal. And I did. HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVERTIME? As a child and young adult, the world was a big scary place and I preferred to just live in a small bubble with a stable job, the same friends, and within some very tight boundaries. After raising my son and sending him off in the world, I realized that I wanted so much more for myself in return. I learned that the world is an enormous place and I’m just a tiny grain of sand. A pin dot both in size and in the length of time I am here. That lead me to do more, experience more, and live more fulfilled. So, at the age of 40 I started modeling, singing, learning, exploring, traveling, and accomplishing things on my bucket list that most people don’t accomplish even in their twenties and thirties. And after I turned 50, I ramped it even more! When I applied for law school someone told me I was nuts because I’ll graduate at 60 years old. And my response was (also a great piece of advice given to me years ago) “the time passes anyways”. And so what? I have a lot of life left to still live and I want to live it knowing that I spent the time doing things that are meaningful and inspire others to do the same. I never want to be in the ER thinking my life is over and I did not experience pure joy and also having a life that I have always dreamed of. I remember when I was laying in the bed in the ER, I just kept saying to myself over and over that “THIS is NOT how my story ends” and I refuse to die without experience a life well lived and fulfilled. And I stopped doing anything that got in the way of that and changed my story on that very day in the fall of 2019. I became a master manifester. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I plan to collaborate in the book series, continue to write, head to law school, build a commercial brokerage focused on profitability through development in the impact investing space, write my own book about my life when I lived in judgement of myself, fund a no kill shelter for animals, and fund a single women’s non for profit to support women like myself and my mom who struggled financially, emotionally, and mentally to care for their kids in a world where it requires the support of a village. Also to continue to be the best version of myself so that I can continue to support others.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR LIFE? Family and friends always inspire me but above all my three adult sons are my constant inspiration. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Loyal, energetic, and creative WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? My parents instilled a strict work ethic in me from an early age. I've worked since I was 12 and I don't think I will ever be able to fully retire. I've found something I love to do so it's not really work anymore even though I probably spend more time on it than when I owned the restaurants! WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? It's changed over the years. It used to be all about success in business - how profitable were my restaurants, could I open another one, etc. Now, it's all about helping my clients live their best lives with grace and sophistication. When I get feedback from clients, brand partners and online supporters that they love how I show 56 Gladys Hope & Inspirational Issue 2021

them how to use what they already own but may not love and how to add to their collection, or that they're now entertaining at home and loving it because of something I've shown them, that I'm their inspiration to be more than they already are - I see that as true success. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? Someone once told me that the most courageous thing you can do is step off the edge into the unknown - to follow your gut instinct into the next chapter of your life. I did just that at 65 when this new adventure all began and I've never been sorry and I've never looked back. HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVERTIME? When I started with my first restaurant over 30 years ago in 1995, and even after owning them successfully for over 20 years, I never imagined that there would be a job as a creative and an expert in home décor and design with an emphasis on entertaining and lifestyle as exists for me today. Nor had I ever imagined that I would become an author. And, even when I sold the last restaurant in 2015 and started on this journey I had no idea that it could become a full-blown career so quickly. So, for me, the world has changed very fast and for this I am grateful. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? My coffee table book The Catalogue Vol. 1 just launched this fall. It's a true art book filled with photographs that I personally curated. It illustrates different ways to entertain with pieces from both well-known brands and some more obscure artisans from around the world. Both clients and followers have asked me to create products for the home that I love so I'm developing three beautiful glasses - champagne, white wine and red wine - because if you know me you know I love wine and especially bubbles - which will be available exclusively on my website. After that there will be a great woven throw blanket and a cheese/charcuterie board to name just a few. They will all be on my website in 2022 so stay tuned!

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR LIFE? There is a woman who is a very dear friend of mine, who is also an interior designer, that I have a great deal of respect for. She and I collaborated on a few projects together over the years. I was at a crossroads in my life, which she was aware of. So, she told me this story, which is what inspired me to get out of the hospitality industry and dive into my dream of real estate and interior design full-time. The story goes like this, "There was a gorgeous model who wanted to be an actor, a comedian specifically. She was only landing B-rated acting jobs because no one took her seriously as an actress, especially as a comedian because she was too pretty. She was terribly unhappy. At that time, she was also struggling a bit in her marriage. She loved her husband very much but felt that she needed to keep an eye on him at a constant. At almost 40 years old, she decided to create a TV show where she could work with her best friend, keep her husband close to her, and do comedy, which was her true passion in life. Her name was Lucille Ball and she created I Love Lucy The rest is history!" This story inspired me to make a major change in my life at around the same age. I thought if Lucy can do it, so can I! I still fall back on this story from time to time when I need inspiration. Lucille Ball was a pioneer of her time and I have a great deal of respect for her. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Creativity, Love, and Power.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? My family is my constant motivation to work hard, both in my career and in life. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? I think success is when you can finally sit down, feel content and smile at your life. It's not attached to anything monetary. It's about feeling like your heart and soul are full because you have worked hard to achieve that balance and that light in your life. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? My mom told me at a very young age, "There is nothing that you cannot do son, if you want it bad enough." This has rung true my entire life. Mom was right again! HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVERTIME? Wow, do we have several pages for this one? I think as humans we are constantly evolving physically and emotionally. There is a poem by Rumi called "The Guest House." It essentially humanizes emotions and states that there are many types of "people" that come to enter your guest house. Some good, some great, some bad, others depressed, angry, loving, witty, etc. Rumi says to accept all of them as guests and welcome them with open arms because there is something to be learned by each of them. This rings very true for me in my life. I believe that everything happens for a reason. I accept all things good, bad, positive and negative and understand that there is something to be learned by all of these experiences. It provides strength, growth and understanding. If something terrible happens, we have two choices. We can sit and wallow in the negativity and let it consume us, or we can choose to use it as fuel to make us stronger and allow us to persevere. I think during these recent times and challenges this has been my mantra and it has allowed me ladys to get through all of this with a positive perspective.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? So many things. Season 2 of Inside Out begins filming in the fall, and my real estate team, The Sabatella Group, continues to grow strong. I have new design projects that are underway and I'm starting my own wallpaper line to name a few.

More than anything, my partner and the love of my life, Wade, inspires me every day to work my hardest, follow my wildest dreams, and squeeze every ounce out of life. He's by far my biggest motivation and inspiration. I'm also constantly inspired by the incredible young women I meet who also have Alopecia. They are the ones that continually motivate me to keep spreading awareness of hair loss and specifically Alopecia, in the beauty community and beyond. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE? Bald, Colorful, and Electric! WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? I get dozens and dozens of young women and men reaching out to me every day across social media, bravely sharing their stories and how I've encouraged or inspired them to be more confident or bold in their mindset and outlook. Seeing that impact is more valuable than any kind of success or dollar to me, and inspires the foundation of everything I'm working towards down the road. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? I think the ultimate measure of success is happiness, and I think that true happiness is having the privilege of having your basic life needs taken care of and being able to work on your deepest passion while giving back to your community, surrounded by the people who love you. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU? My Dad always said "Rely on the good grace of people once in a while. It's not often that you'll be disappointed, and if you are, don't judge them all." HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD CHANGED OVERTIME? My perspective on the world has changed pretty dramatically over the years. I think after having traveled, lived in different places, and challenged myself to consistently get outside of my comfort zone, I've learned that our experience of the world is what we make of it. It's hard to see that when we're younger, but with time and experience I've really come to understand that our mindset is truly everything. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? Oh gosh, there is so much around the corner this year, and definitely next year too! I'm currently prepping for my annual Halloween series "31 Days of October!" Every day for the month of October I create crazy, creative, full body makeup looks for Instagram and TikTok, and this year is going to be the biggest yet! Definitely keep an eye out for that. I'm also working on a few different collaborations with some incredible brands that I can't wait to share soon. Also, Wade and I just wrapped up filming for a broadcast tv series, so keep an eye out for that announcement, it will be airing this fall!

It all started when she was born, becoming one of only .1% of children born in the world as a triplet, who then went on to define modern fashion as one of the most successful female entrepreneurs of all time. As the Cofounder of True Religion Jeans, one of four fashion brands she grew and sold for a bit shy of $1 billion, she remains one of the most approachable, fun, and normal humans one could ever hope to meet. Some kids are precocious; Mozart was performing the music he wrote for European dynasties at age 6. Steve Jobs was 21 when he and Wozniak started Apple in a garage. And Kym was 18 when she had a brainstorm to buy irregulars in downtown LA and resell them on a then seedy Venice Beach Boardwalk. With the proceeds of that business, she purchased a jewel of real estate in the most expensive market in Los Angeles - and flipped it in 48 hours to make a $75,000 profit. Kym has a thing about hard work and says that sitting in the classroom is not a way to learn, but using your own money serves as the best education. “Entrepreneurs cannot call themselves this until they do the work, part of which means failing. If you want to figure out what this means; earn it” she shrugs, explaining with emotive hand gestures. “I’ve paid my dues. take off. I’ve leveraged everything I had, lived in a hotel with three kids, sold my car and held my breath – many times.” The interestingly bespectacled and tattooed style guru continues: “I’ve been sued for nothing and I’ve had the joys of luminaries like Beyonce and JLo wearing my clothes. I’ve been ousted from board meetings, married and divorced twice, but I’ve had Stephen Tyler of Aerosmith serenade me in my backyard. I have worked with some of the biggest celebrities and business moguls in the world and grappled with watching my mother succumb to breast cancer. Life is rich, but to find success, you must embrace the beauty of all these things.” A native Angeleno, Kym does not have an Ivy-league education; she graduated from Santa Monica Community College with an AA in business and earned a real estate license. But unlike many entrepreneurs who are funded by investors to build swanky offices before they make a profit, she only borrowed $300 from her parents. That injection got her irregular t-shirt selling off the ground, paid back in a few days and feathered her bank account with $50,000. The product of a Jewish family from the San Fernando Valley, the triplets were famous at the schools where their colleagues were the kids of Jimm Caan, Friends comedienne, Lisa Kudrow, rock guitar god of Toto Steve Lukather, and Moon Unit Zappa. Being rare triplets, they were wooed by


Hollywood to be in front of the camera. “I never liked that thing of having to wear identical outfits,” she laughs. They were bat mitzvah’d and worked for their step father, who created Faces International. The family then moved to Malibu, where she describes a “crazy upbringing,” alongside Sean Penn, Flip Wilson’s daughter, the Cassidy’s, Gary Busey and where she met her best friend, Holly Robinson Peete.

Gold worked as a hostess at Alice’s’ Restaurant on the Malibu Pier, about which singer-songwriter, Arlo Guthrie cooed in his deadpan soliloquy. Kym’s first company was called Kymberly Suits You, which ironically enough included the sweat equity of a new-to-Los Angeles-East Londoner, the now famed reality show producer, Mark Burnett (Shark Tank, Survivor, The Apprentice). Though they wed, they went separate ways before Kym’s 21st birthday. From beach boardwalk rack sales, Gold expanded to swap meets and created clothing parties in private homes. “I found clothes that would have sold in Nordstrom for $60 and sewed a little fun flower patch over the damaged spots and they became a $20 fashion statement.” Kym’s next entrepreneurial endeavor created a 1980’s fashion phenomenon when she trimmed Levi’s with kimono fabrics. Bella Dahl sold like hotcakes to all the most beloved retailing giants of the time: Contempo, Judy’s and Fred Segal. She had stints designing for Laundry by Shelli Segal and Rampage, while working with fashion industry moguls, dressing Lenny Kravitz as well as members of Outkast. From there she founded a company called Hippie, continuing to sell high fashion denim to the fashion world. After Kym’s first divorce, she was impossibly drawn to a fabric salesman, Jeff Lubell, who had been a guest at her first wedding. That relationship proved to be deep-rooted and fiery, but produced three strong, beautiful young men. Together, she and Lubell founded, built, and sold True Religion for a legendary $835 million. Afterwards, Kym ventured to her own company, Babakul, Inc., where she hired a supportive team of women. Featured on HSN often, the brand was a huge success, but Kym decided to sell the company after six years so that she could focus on being a mom.

It started in a moment she shared with her youngest son, Dylan, who gifted her with a pottery throwing session for her birthday. She liked the experience so much, her entrepreneurial wheels began turning almost immediately, though she managed to utter aloud: “this would be a great hobby.” Dylan knew better and responded by saying “Mom, nothing with you is a hobby.” Inspired, Kym was off to the races, and translated the decades of business building knowledge, colorway collections and technical shaping of clothing for a body into environmentally pleasing stuff of a home. She sold her magnificent house on a storied bluff of Malibu, where she envisioned living when she was a girl, and came back to the valley. There, she created the Style Union Home pottery atelier, and surrounded herself in a stable of amazing talent of ceramicists, operations gurus, marketing folk, dogs, and a garden. Most importantly, Kym shares her life with the love of her life, Marlon to whom she will wed when the pandemic has come to a close. In her spare time, Kym gardens in her Gucci slippers, hosts weekly Sunday night family dinners as her mother did and donates the bounty of her garden to her neighbors every Monday. She delights in the power of Pilates, pristine water, good friends and is building her next style powerhouse, which she hopes will become her legacy.

After a long marriage with a tough ending and selling one of the biggest dynasties of denim, what does a woman do after her sons are out of the house? Gold turned her craving for creativity toward filmmaking while building and reimagining homes. It turned out that her sense of aesthetics was not limited to fashion, and could also be crafted into utilitarian furniture, decor fabrications, but most importantly a cohesive look throughout a living space. Through a few of these experiences, which, again, were grandly profitable, it was a birthday celebration that sparked these hankerings leading Gold into her next chapter.

Farhad Re drew his inspiration from current events: fascinated by the conquest of space, he imagined a modern woman, conquering the world, while connecting her to her Roman origins, like a vestal of the future. Expected continuation of the couture collection, Farhad Re presents its first Prêt-à-Porter collection. We find the warrior and conqueror woman, signature of the creator, in dresses 100% chiffon and silk tulle. The very elaborate details attest to Farhad's desire for high-end, such as the silk organza squares, cut and folded by hand to form a flower, a detail that can be found in the couture collection. By Karen Holly Berliner SUSHI AMANE Executive Sushi Chef Tomoyuki Hayashi, who decided to pursue the fine and intricate art of making sushi and who has apprenticed under top sushi masters in Tokyo for many years before leaving Japan, has a vast and esteemed history. At Sushi AMANE, Chef Hayashi has clearly used the culmination of all of his experiences to create and plate unique sushi items for even the most discerning palates. As the freshest catches are tantamount to the sushi dining experience, the best cuts of fresh fish are delivered to Sushi AMANE each morning, offering wild fish from Japan and other countries around the world. The dining space itself at Sushi AMANE is an eight seat sushi bar concealed within MIFUNE’s subterranean dining room. Be sure to make reservations for Chef Hayashi’s omakase sushi experience; a progression consisting of four small dishes, nine sushi Nigiri, tamago, hand roll and miso soup. Kaiseki is an elevated form of traditional Japanese washoku cuisine that is served as a multi-course meal and based on the freshest seasonal ingredients. Kōyō in Astoria, Queens is one of a select few New York restaurants that focuses on kaiseki cuisine and is the vision of Chef /Owner Jay Zheng. Zheng’s vision has transformed Kōyō from a restaurant that focused largely on its Omakase sushi offerings to a Kaiseki dining experience including hot dishes that Zheng has created by infusing his Chinese cultural background into traditional Japanese cuisine. Enter and find a warmly lit space adorned with natural wood accents. An eight seat white marble Chef ’s counter enhances your dining experience, with a spotlight in front of each diner’s seat to bring focus to the dishes presented. An open kitchen where dishes are prepared enthusiastically and skillfully can be seen from the dining room where guests can get a peek at the chef ’s cooking and plating the dishes for the kaiseki experience. Kōyō’s spacious outdoor patio located through the restaurants backdoor features a roof that allows diners to an outdoor dining option if preferred. Kōyō features a seven–course tasting menu, beginning with Sakizuke: (the amuse bouche). Some fabulous choices have been featured here like seared ayu (sweet fish) and Norwegian king crab and pickled watermelon rind in watermelon yuzu dashi. Second is Hassun: a collection of small bites to be eaten beginning on the left, starting with Botan like ebi tartar (spotted prawn), Kaluga caviar and Yamagata dashi (diced vegetables over a sushi rice cracker). Following is uni milk custard topped with hokkaido uni and yub, and after that, perhaps the tempura kisu with matcha salt; with the final Hassun bite being fresh wakame (seaweed) , umibudo (seagrape), tosazu glee and crispy sawagani (small river crab) with yuzu salt and yuzu extract; all exquisite and aesthetically pleasing choices. BALADE EAST VILLAGE

Balade combines the authentic flavors of Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisines with flair and flavor. Chef/Restaurateur Roland Semaan, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, found the perfect location in the East Village and returned to his Lebanese roots with the opening of Balade Restaurant in 2010. The restaurant has since become an East Village staple with Executive Chef Micheline Wakim at the helm, and Omar Douad, a native of Jordan, as chef de cuisine. The interior design brings you to Lebanon, as it is adorned with circular cut pieces of wooden cedar trees and Arabesque tiles, all imported from Lebanon. Outdoor seating is offered with transparent partitions, picnic tables and chairs. Perhaps begin dinner here with a spread of savory, shareable plates called Mezze such as the perfectly chargrilled chicken wings, marinated for 48 hours with Balade proprietary spices and imported olive oil, freshly ground red peppers and walnuts topped with pomegranate; or Makanek beef sausages flamed table side with fresh lemon juice. The Samke Mechwiye is a whole grilled branzino, marinated in lemon, olive oil and salt served with tahini dipping sauce while the Sultan El Shawarma is made with thinly -sliced marinated beef and roasted with onions, cucumbers, tomatoes and topped off with tahini and a pinch of a spicy mixture called zaatar. Deserts such as Ashta, consists of “white pudding,” a rich cream traditionally made by repeatedly skimming the film that appears on the surface of boiled milk, coated with velvety honey and doused with fresh strawberries and pistachios. Executive Chef Sachin Wagh and sous chef Alpesh Rathod, have elevated Sapphire’s cuisine and further introduced a modern Avant-Garde prix fixe dinner menu. The modern prix fixe menu allows diners to curate their own experience from an exclusive selection of 15 dishes—four choices for each savory course and three dessert choices—in addition to the restaurant’s main menu. Highlights from the menu include kerala fish curry, Chilean sea bass served over a spicy coconut sauce; filet mignon, served with cumin tempered fingerling potatoes; and masala chai panna cotta, a cookie crumble served with blueberry compote. The a la carte menu offers popular traditional Indian dishes, such as chatpata poori, mini whole wheat puffs, diced potatoes and chickpeas served with yogurt, mint, and tamarind sauces; and tandoori dishes, lamb shashlik, spiced lamb morsels, served with assorted grilled vegetables. Winona’s is a brand new modern European café and natural wine bar set to open its doors in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on November 12th 2021. Owned by husband and wife team Executive Chef Cressida Greening and Emir Dupeyron, the concept draws inspiration from Chef Greening’s British roots and will feature breakfast and lunch in the café which will seamlessly transform into a wine bar at night. The Back Room at Winona’s will feature a prix fixe dining menu that will highlight clean flavors and locally sourced ingredients. The space, which has been there since 1910 and served as an old fixture store, has been completely redesigned. Enter to find an art deco style café/wine bar with light wood banquette seating and burgundy chairs with wooden tables. A long hallway leads to a mirrored door. Open the door and you will find Winona’s dining room (set to open in December), featuring high ceilings and skylights with an open kitchen and opposite facing cocktail/wine bar. During the day, Winona’s will feature breakfast and lunch with coffee selections provided by their neighbors Parlor Coffee Roasters, who roast everything fresh daily. The breakfast dishes will include such popular selections as the overnight oats with chia seeds, coconut milk, hemp seeds, seasonal fruit compote and crushed almonds. For a decadent treat, the brioche toast with whipped ricotta, almond butter, grape jam and crushed peanuts delivers while the smoked salmon tartine with smoked whitefish spread, with pickled beets, scallion crème fraiche and everything bagel spice on rye bread stands to likely become a signature dish. Lunch items will feature such tasty choices as the mortadella sandwich with provolone, cornichons and frisée on focaccia; or for the health conscious, a warm grain bowl with quinoa and brown rice, shaved brussels sprouts, roasted koginut squash, pickled carrots, cauliflower and sautéed market greens will hit the mark. The cocktails at Winona’s are inventive and unique such as the brown-buttered rum, served hot and made with aged rum, amontillado, cream, brown butter and baking spice; or the Lavender Fields with blanco tequila, grapefruit, lavender and lime among many others. On a second day of October of each year, it became a tradition to celebrate outstanding talents in the field of medical aesthetics. New England Institute of Medical Aesthetics is a prestigious educational landmark for many nurse practitioners and doctors who decided to dedicate their career to beauty and aesthetics. October 2, 2021 was highlighted by an amazing Gala at Encore casino, Boston, MA. Over 200 glamorous guests were gathering to celebrate Audrey Rose, a founder of New England Institute of Medical Aesthetics and her fellowship peers. The Gala was filled with presentations by world class recognized surgical professionals like Dr. Kolenda, an Assistant Professor of University of Toronto and Erika Barry, NP. The star of the show was Tox Josh, named top 100 Best Injectors in America, who was MC of the event. This Gala was also a celebration of professional achievements. Since first appearing in Gladys Magazine, I have stepped away from the camera and have been focusing more on my growing family, being active in fire and emergency medical services, and my exciting career as a Deputy Coroner. The current pandemic has kept me very busy!

IG: @__scurt When I modeled for Gladys I was a sophomore in college (both times). The photo session I went to for the second magazine I was featured in my, at the time, boyfriend came with me. Later that year he asked me to marry him and 8 months later we said I do! We just had our 3 year wedding anniversary in August of 2021. I graduated college shortly after the wedding and we moved to North Carolina where we both got wonderful jobs! I’ve modeled a few times between my Gladys shoot and my most recent photo shoot. The latest was a mock bridal party shoot at the beach in Emerald Isle, NC. Still love modeling and always learning and growing through every photo shoot experience. My sister is a corporate director at DELL and I am a senior sales executive at one of the largest analyst advisory tech firms – Gartner. I love being in the emerging technology space and helping my clients grow and scale their business through refining their products, market positioning and acquiring funding to make their dreams come true. I get a chance to hear about all the newest tech advancements like chat bot solutions, natural language processing and cyber security. On the side – I am a Head Creator for a new food language app called FoodQuirk. This app brings foodies to the (largest dining table online), where we can discuss allergies, food preferences, recipes and more. Think of it like an Enneagram for food, where you are profiled based on your eating habits and aligned to others just like you. We hope it will streamline the process of eating for all and bridge cultural gaps to explore bolder flavors among us all. I am also married and have a 3.5 year old daughter and a 5 month old son! The most important aspects of life of course!

don't get caught up in what's going on around you and you don't compare yourself to others. The phrase "comparison is the thief of joy" is so accurate, and anytime we compare ourselves we put ourselves down.

NAME THREE PEOPLE OR THINGS YOU ARE INSPIRED BY? Honestly, I am inspired by the many strong women that surround me, and that social media allows me to be connected to every single day. Of course my family- my mum and dad in particular, they’re hard working, kind and humble and they really instilled in me a work ethic. I also love traveling and feel that I get really inspired when experiencing other cultures. There’s nothing that inspires you as much as when you’re reminded of how small you are, and how little you actually know. For me at least, travelling makes me crave to learn more and be a better, kinder person.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST HOPEFUL FOR? I’m hopeful for the future! I have lots of big goals and plans for the next couple of years and I can’t wait to see them come to fruition. I’m hopeful that I can continue to grow as a person, and experience and learn more about myself and the world, and ultimately be successful. Not just in the way of a career, but also that I continue being genuinely happy, surrounded by friends and family. HOLIDAY WISH LIST? My number one wish is to be able to visit my family in Australia. I just moved to Los Angeles less than 2 years ago, which I’m so thankful for, but there’s nothing like being able to go home. I grew up in a small beach town with 5 siblings, and I miss my family so, so much. I can’t wait until the borders open and I can go back and see them, as well as my little jack russell (he lives with my parents).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, because I kind of live by many quotes. But one of my favorites is; “If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” It’s a quote my sister Alli told me once when I was at my lowest. This is such a good phrase to live by, to know that when things aren’t going right it will all be okay in the end. It helps me hold out hope for the future no matter what the situation may be. BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN? The best advice I've ever received is to stay in your lane. WHAT'S UP NEXT FOR YOU? Honestly, I have a goal list as long as my arm, but currently I’m really excited to continue on the track I’m on with social media, Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram (@robbijan). I will also be launching a brand in the next year, which is really exciting and something I've been wanting to do for so long. In the next 5 years I would also love to have a family, since I grew up in a big family, it has really made me want my own.

As the world shut down, it became impossible to create the adventure style content in the outside world like I normally would, so I brought the adventure to us inside our apartment. I created a series called The Great Indoors and I skied off the kitchen counter, kayaked class 5 rapids in the bathtub and mountain biked the living room furniture. This young woman had me in tears with her powerful words and presence exuding from that tiny little body. She gives me hope for our future. Women of Afghanistan who are risking their lives to keep their freedoms to work and study. Things that so many women in America take for granted. The healthcare workers who continue to show up everyday even in the face of adversity to help save the lives of people with corona virus, even the lives of those who have campaigned against them. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? Teddy Roosevelt - "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort with

I hope that somehow through all of this craziness and division in the world, we can find more unity and kindness and realize we have more in common than we think. HOLIDAY WISH LIST? NAME THREE PEOPLE OR THINGS YOU ARE INSPIRED BY? People inspire me constantly. I love people. I find us so fascinating, why we do the things we do, what motivates us, how we love. And similarly, I love stories. I soak up creativity in my field as much as I can. Seeing the incredible storytelling that’s out there in film and tv drives my ambition, feeds my own creativity. And when I need a break from it all, I always go back to nature, to the mind body connection, to rudimentary nourishment. There is so much inspiration to be gleaned from the earth and technology and contemporary culture distracts us from these primal truths. BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN? Brene Brown has said that when we’re born, we’re hardwired for struggle. I was bullied a lot as a kid, and I’ll never forget this tough love moment my mom gave me when I was a young teen. I wanted things to simply be better, for my obstacles to not exist, for a life that was happy and perfect. And my mom told me, “That’s not why we’re here.” We’re here to figure out this thing called life, yes to thrive and love and laugh, but also to grieve, to evolve through adversity. If you want to touch the highest peaks this human experience has to offer, then one must radically accept those low lows as inherent and integral to a live well-lived. WHAT ARE YOU MOST HOPEFUL FOR? I’m looking forward to our collective return to empathy. There’s been a lot of unlearning we’ve been invited to navigate through this last period, politically, culturally, spiritually. A lot of anger and radical shift through action and muscle. I think we’re due for more coming home, a decentering of the self and a deepening of our connection to each other and humanity through empathy and love.

And just like that everything seems to be… Semi Back. Our L.A. life with the glitz and glam during the award season has everyone getting pampered, rewarded and awarded. The invites flow; the RSVP’s are none stop with a back-to-back schedule and endless champagne toasts. How much do I love this! It feels like Christmas for the adults.

I was invited to the GBK Bar Brand Luxury lounge. The gift bags for the nominees had a juicy value of over 40 k but lets talk about the event itself and who was there. It was held at the rooftop penthouse of the La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood, as we left our car at the valet parking there was spot were each attendee was given a rapid Covid-19 test from Madek Health Systems before entering, a scheduled appointment time, and measures were taken to have the event spaced out in compliance with Covid-19 occupancy guidelines to ensure a safe environment for the guests.

This was fast and effortless, from there I checked in with a warm welcome and I met the artist Ringo 4u2c - International Pop, who created the entry Emmy art mural for the event this mural took 3-4 days to make. Once I got to the rooftop there was a great vibe, a lot of familiar faces and non-stop food. One of my favorites was Hibachi House LA they were cooking delicious Japanese hibachi right on the spot, the chef was so entertaining I just stayed to watch him cook a true life performance. I had to pair it with a tequila shot from Suavecito Tequila. I also tried the vegan sushi from Kuleana, and I was in shock because the taste and texture was so real that I had to have more than one and yes it was vegan. They had a place were they were cooking in just 3 minutes a perfectly medium well done new york steak by a brand called Blazing Bull Grills Revolutionary portable gas infrared grill that heats up to 1500 degrees to deliver premium quality taste in any outdoor area. I tried it and I was amazed by it.

We also kept hydrated with Boxed Water, pure water in 92% renewable carton and also are a leader in reforestation efforts; recycling is no longer enough, Boxed Water is Better. They will plant 2 trees for every photo of their box found on social. So make sure to post and tag. I was introduced to Greek good inspired luxury Nano amplified cbd skin collection that I can’t wait to try and feel like a Goddess, let’s face it we all love good skin. Over 60 of the biggest stars of television attended including 2021 EMMY winner Evan Peters, 2021 Emmy nominees Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso), Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), Brendan Scannell (Bonding), Sherry Marsh (Pose) along with past Emmy winners Viola Davis and Martin Short. Also in attendance were stars of the Emmy nominated shows Jenna Lyng Adams and Melissa Tang (Kominsky Method), Christian Isaiah and Shanola Hampton (Shameless), Cameron Crovetti (Big Little Lies), Taylor Nichols (Pen15), Rose Abdoo (Hacks), Gianni Decenzo (Cobra Kai), Victoria Tate (Morning Show), and Fortune Feimster (Drag Race). Some of the other stars that stopped by include Malin Akerman, Nia Vardalos, Ryan O’Conner, Saul Rubinek, Raven Symone, Patrick Gallagher, Leslie-Ann Brandt, Mekhi Phifer, Shawn Hatosy, Isaac Keys, Nika King, Abraham Lin, Shannon Elizabeth, Jordyn Curet, Jaylin Fletcher, Greta Onieogou, Larray, Marcel Spears, Melissa Roxburg, Timon K. Durett and many other Vips.
