Conference Overview:

The conference is organized by : - TU Dortmund University/ Spatial Planning Faculty/ Department of Urban Design and Land-Use Planning - German Jordanian University (GJU)/ School of Architecture and Built Environment, -2 Supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).


Project Brief:

The Project is a three year cooperation between the German Jordanian university and TU-Dortmund. The project explored the role of The public space as a catalyst of urban transformation, taking a critical and comparative stance on the conceptualization and the role of public space and public urban nodes in urban integration, giving special focus to contexts of industrial areas, renaturalization of neglected ecological components, and integration of critical social groups. Parallel lessons were taken from the Ruhr Region in Germany and from the districts of Marka and Sahab within the geographical expanse of Amman/ Jordan.

Conference Overview:

The Conference forms the culmination of a three year project by the two universities that explored the role of public space as a catalyst of urban transformation, taking a critical and comparative stance on the conceptualization and the role of public space and public urban nodes in urban integration, giving special focus to contexts of industrial areas, Parallel lessons were taken from the Ruhr Region in Germany and from the districts of Marka and Sahab within the geographical expanse of Jordan.

The Conference will showcase the products of the Project, in form of student work, research projects and knowledge exchange that occurred among the German-Jordanian counterparts; it will showcase the role of major stakeholders envisioning and enabling urban transformation in Jordan; and will act as an international platform to discuss new ideas and create the opportunity to initiate a dialogue with esteemed colleagues and global intellectuals. The conference follows the broad themes of: Urban transformation and the role of public space, Nature based planning approaches, Social and cultural dimension of cities

Transportation from Amman Queen Alia Airport: Airport Taxi: Taxis operate 24 hours a day. Prices are fixed by law and are posted in the taxi park at the terminals exits. Taxi ride from the airport to Amman city center should cost around JOD20. We recommend you to agree a price with the taxi driver to avoid an inflated price or a detour during transportation. Tel: +962 6 4451074 / +962 6 4451302 Airport Express Buses: Depart every 30 minutes from 6:00am to 6pm, and every 60 minutes from 6pm to 12pm. The Express bus stop is outside the Terminal building. Travel time to/from the airport to Tabarbour bus station in Amman -with a stop at the 7th Circle- it takes about 45-60 minutes. Bus route: North Bus Station - Housing Bank Complex - Fourth Circle - Fifth Circle - Six Circle - Seventh Circle - QAIA. Rent a Car: Car rental service is available from Amman airport. Transportation within the stay:

Public Transportation in Amman: The most common way of getting between cities is by bus, most of which are fifteen- or eighteenseater minibuses. Some larger buses and air-conditioned coaches also serve as public transport. City connecting busses usually depart when they are full rather than a specific time table. Transportation within the stay:

Yellow Taxi: Private taxis are painted yellow, can be flagged from the side of the road and have cheap fares. For longer journeys around town, then you’re best off agreeing a price per hour or per journey. Service Taxi: These white cabs are shared taxis that stick to specific routes and are not permitted to leave the city limits.They cost less than a yellow taxi and drive through specific routes only and to specific stops. Another important attraction that can be easly reached from Madaba is Nebo Mount, which is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land.
