Chairman’s Notes A warm welcome to Molesey Operatic Society’s production of Me and My Girl. We’ve also welcomed back a number of former members for this production after a long absence, Stephen Green, Gordon Bell, Roger Chapman and Lynn Menzies, who is returning to direct her first show with us. Everyone has worked extremely hard to get this show up and running in a relatively short space of time and I extend my thanks to everyone for all that they have done. We all hope you will enjoy our production, and I’m sure your feet will be tapping by the end of the night. As for the future, we will be announcing some major plans in the coming months, so watch this space! Garry Beckett, Chairman email: gjbeckett@hotmail.com

Synopsis The Hareford clan, a group of insufferable aristocrats, are clinging to their blue-blooded ways by the tips of their wellmanicured fingers. The family’s precarious financial situation can only be remedied by locating a legitimate heir to the earldom of Hareford. In due course an heir is found, but, unfortunately for the haughty Harefords, he turns out to be the decidedly non-noble Bill Snibson, a swaggering cockney from Lambeth. (It seems the late 13th Earl of Hareford had enjoyed at least one brief period of amorous slumming, secretly wedding a woman beneath his station). The late Earl’s will specifically states that the heir must be deemed a fit and proper person by the two very fit and proper executors, Maria, Duchess of Dene, and Sir John Tremayne. A good-hearted woman beneath all her jewellery, the Duchess is determined to make the best of the situation by transforming Snibson into a proper gentleman and marrying him off to a "proper" young lady. But Bill has other ideas. He's madly in love with a girl he refuses to leave behind – fellow cockney Sally Smith. But Sally soon realises that Bill was destined for greater things. She does not fit into his new, upper-class world. And she loves him enough to leave him. Bill decides to search for her, even though it means leaving behind his position in the upper ranks of society and new-found wealth. But, thanks to some secret lessons from a certain well-known language instructor on Wimpole Street, Sally returns as a worthy consort to the heir of Hareford.

Cast Biographies Bill Snibson ~ Steven Green Steve is delighted to be returning to Molesey Operatic, where he made his debut in 1985. Since that time he has appeared with many different groups and venues including the London Palladium. Me And My Girl is the show that inspired Steve to get into musical theatre and so it is fitting he should return to his first society to play Bill.

Sally Smith ~ Lisa Guerreiro Lisa is married to Franco and they have 2 children, Michael who will be 13 on March 29th and Sofia who is 10. This is Lisa’s first show with Molesey Operatic Society, and she is enjoying herself immensely playing the part of Sally. Her family have been involved with perfecting Sally’s cockney accent, and now thanks to 4 months of Eastenders, all are hooked on the soap! Happy Birthday Michael!!!

Maria, Duchess of Dene ~ Anne Jones Anne is looking forward to bringing the same sensitivity and creativity to the part of the Duchess as she did in her last critically acclaimed role – the back end of a camel – in Hinchley Manor’s recent pantomime. Never has Anne’s rear-end made such an impact on theatre-goers. Anne hopes the audience won’t take the hump this time!!!

Sir John Tremayne ~ Iain Cannell Iain has been performing with Molesey Operatic Society since 1999 and in particular has previously played Sir John’s “army friend of mine. He shares a room in Upper Wimpole Street with a remarkable man who could certainly do it.” Name that show! As Iain only started performing in amateur musicals in 1996 he was immediately available for the mature parts!

M&MG Prog 12/30/10 11:15 PM Page 11

Lady Jaqueline Carstone ~ Wendy Howard Wendy started performing as a dancer at the age of 2 and has been dancing ever since. She started singing seriously 7 years ago, after many years in the chorus, with role of Phyllis in Iolanthe. She has also played such varied roles as Polly in Jack the Ripper, Yum-Yum and Mabel. She played Lady Jaquie in Me & My Girl with Walton & Weybridge Operatic Society in 2001.

Gerald Bolingbroke ~ Gordon Bell Gordon joined Molesey Operatic Society in 1982 as a clarinetist in the orchestra. Then in 1983 he played Frank in Showboat followed by, amongst others, Baron Zeta in Merry Widow, the General in South Pacific and Koko in The Mikado. For Bookham Light Opera he recently played Dr. Daly in The Sorceror and Lord Mountararat in Iolanthe.

Herbert Parchester ~ Roger Chapman Roger makes a welcome return to Molesey having, over the years, played many lead parts and produced several shows for the society. Recently he has expanded his repertoire by playing Widow Twankey in Aladdin and Stanley in Run for Your Wife, whilst also indulging in grand opera with the chorus of Riverside Opera.

Charles the Butler ~ Roy Flowers Roy has been singing for many years but has only come to the stage in the last 12 months. He came to Molesey Operatic Society from Hinchley Manor where he played Widow Twankey in Aladdin and is delighted to be playing Charles the butler in this show.

M&MG Prog 12/30/10 11:15 PM Page 12

Sir Jasper Tring ~ Alan Forster Every family needs an old buffoon so Alan is a natural for this part! Alan is a quantity surveyor by profession and learned to act at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors!!! Eh??

Lord Battersby ~ Alan Young This is Alan’s second outing on stage having made his debut in a Feast of Gilbert & Sullivan in November. He can’t understand why the society should think him suitable for the part of the dipsomanic hen-pecked peer!

Lady Battersby ~ Rosa Atkinson 2003 will be busy for Rosa as she has starred as The Baroness in La Vie Parisienne earlier this month and now performing Lady Battersby which she is thoroughly enjoying, and in May she will be performing at New York’s Carniegie Hall.

Mrs Brown ~ Audrey Meeks Audrey has been with the society for the last two years. She had previously played Lizzie Stride in Jack the Ripper, and in Mrs Brown, Audrey really comes into her own!
