REGENERATING CITY GRADUATION PROJECT

WHAT WENT WRONG?

Architecture starts with undertanding situations that leads to destruction. Understanding what went wrong, will give designers to power of creating something that should have been done at the fist place. Understanding urban transformation of Fikirtepe is mainly about examining and questioning methods of modifying. Transformation of Fikirtepe has started with good and innocent intentions. But with the blink of an eye destructions and evictions started. This so called urban renewal was sudden, topdown. Environmental protection didn’t taken into consideration as well as renters role in this occasion. It contiuned more like economical developmetn and politicalporedominance was unchallanged. New contructions didn’t only interrupt entire life routine, they increased infrastructural problems, gentrification and otherization that was already there in the city’s fabric instead of trying to solve these problems. But how did architecture become a failure in this process?

QUESTION: IS NEWER ALWAYS NECESSARY?

Tranformation in Fikirtepe requires demolish and build process. That brings out the question in title. In the most pragmatist thinking, this process will cost more than doing necessary research about infrastructural problems. New contructions does not guarantee to harmonise with district’s fabric. There are no projects regarding district’s general condition. So, can smaller and smarter interventions be better than building everything from zero? In this context, proposel should be about demolishing unsafe and unhabitable buildings and designing new volumes while observing what lies in the original forms. What works in the original fabric, should work with the new constructions too.

SELF-SUFFICIENT ZEYTÄ°NBURNU ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT 7

Self sufficient community project is based on an expected earthquake scenario in Istanbul. It covers for any possiblerequirement for post earthquake such as protection, sheltering, housing and nutrition. Zeytinburnu district is a first degree earthquake zone. Since the old skyscrapers are not suitable for earthquake, the proposal suggests new housing and cultural zones. In order to do so, new disaster assembly zones and escape routes are necessary. Project divides district into five circular zones to make sure everbody has enough time to escape under extreme conditions. Districts are created from three circular sub-zones. Center sub-zones are connected to each other and created a green spine. Green spine is basic public area for self sufficient Zeytinburnu during regular times, and it can become temporary housing zone at post earthquake. Spine is wide enought to let emergency cars to pass, still close to any air pollution activity during daily life. In order to create new housing zones and demolish old ones, a timeline is drawed according to the data of current households. According to that timeline, it is possible to create all five district with their own quality equipments and attach them to he main green spine.

B VILLAGE-HOUSING PROJECT ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT 6

Master plan has designed in order to connect port to Beylikdüzü. To do so, it is planned to design a unique museum out of containers to make area more attractive for inhabitans. Due to the survet between Beylikdüzü locals, fingerpiers are added to masterplan area to create a public space which can make the shore side enjoyable for everyone. Another important point is to care about low income people at the port. This point created the backbone of whole project, creating housing areas that also can produce enough to live within the area that still depends on outside and connects to Beylikdüzü. To do so, housing area is divided into units and these units connected to the street level home production areas. Bringing basic home production to street will ensure friendly neighbourhood relations. Minimum privacy is one of the main purposes of project. With minumum privacy people are forced to get out of their houses and socialize with other people in designed masterplan social zones and on streets themselves. Project focuses on creating a sustainable 21st century village with proper technology and friendly environment.

DOKUNAÇ

ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION

Bakırköy coastline used to be the main element of districts’ character. Now, sea and inhabitans are disconnected from each other with shopping malls, new ports and turning shore into private properties. This disconnection causes for Bakırköy to lose its identity and creates a new unpleasent profile. The new proposal of coastline reminds Bakırköy the importance of the sea for both itself and its locals. In order to fix isolation of shore caused by Kennedy street, elevation difference between sea level and main pedestrian road is integrated with a new landscape design. Old overpass on Kennedy Street is a weak link between residential part and social areas which are supposed to take place near by the sea. This overpass and pedestrain circulation should be considered elegantly and united with coastline. Proposal suggests to create new social zones that surrounds sea. New zones are on different levels to melt down the isolation effect caused by elevation difference. To make sure existing circulation of inhabitans goes on, a new overpass is shaped around the idea of combining the axes of coastline and the axes of residential area with a new square. Ensuring that every point is a new vista point for sea and square is one of the main concerns of the project, creating attraction points is another. The “Dokunaç” is a landscape and architectural proposal that touches the sea with new parks and performing points.

ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION

History of the city is one of the major elements which makes the city what it is today. Yedikule dungeons and Goldenhorn is not only important historic area of Istanbul, they also forms city’s public memory. In this position, re-creting land’s stories is important. Looking back into the past hundred years of gasometer, aerial photographs prove that there were tree diffrent vertical structures of gasometer that are build and destroyed over the years. In the architectural design process, it is decided to create tree different spatial imprint to generate history for visitors’ point of view. Adding new buildings according to architectural requirement list is inevitable, but while creating new buildings,it is important to consider not to push existing structure into the background. New building is shaped according to ramp which connects gasometer structure to the new building, old to the new. New building is shaped according to area and the ramp. Ramp works as both interior and exterior architectural element since it is located on the outside but creates a circulation path for the inside. While ramp is creating one part of the “trio instillation” by rising up vertically, other part is created by going down as its negative. Third part is located on the horizontal gasometer buildings, to emphasize their importance. One of the most important decition during the design process is not to damage any of the historic buildings in area and creating new ways to use them in order to protect them. A controlled entrance point is located on the north side of the land. Exhbition areas are located on the northwest, an open carpark and bicycle rent area is located on east side of the land with cafe area within the tree storey height historic building. An open theatre is located on the third circle to make it work with children’s playground.

33

34

New building’s form is shaped around Yedikule dungeons and view from the entrance. New building and the ramp is not visible from the entrance so that it wouldn’t disturb area’s historic value. It gets visible by walking through the landscape that connects every element of design. Roof of building protects 12 meter height restriction and it slopes trough the south of area towards the sea view so the dungeons are still visible from the silhouette. Main entrance of museum is from the gasometer. At the entrance reseption and auditorium is located to seperate circulation of museum from auditorium’s. At the first and second floor of gasometer temporary exhibiton areas are located. At the new building, permanent exhibition areas are located with the addition to requirement list, an view terrace of Yedikule dungeons. Light enters to the building from both south and the west, but the amount of light entering the museum is filtered by the facade layers. Exit of the museum is from the ground floor of new building. There are two basement floors within the area, one for carpark and one for permanent exhibiton area, storage and offices. Ramp goes down to the first basement floor creating a hole and a courtyard that will hep to luminate the floor.

36

FUTURE PREDICTION Historic gasometer area is important for not only for goldenhorn but also for Istanbul city too. It is essential for the area to give it a new purpose to create attraction for different people from the city and museum is one of the best ways to do it. Auditoruim and educational areas is another way to create attraction for citizens too. The trio installation will bring back land memories to visitors’ minds and form a new cultural zone for city.

EXHIBITONS

PATTU ARCHITECTURE “...There is a name for temporary houses on the coast of Marmara, Eagean and Mediterrian Sea and the life shaped around them: Summerhouses. This houses which are in use for tree months in a year , became a trend holiday style for middle class families since 1980’s. Popular coast towns have been turned into a strange city extensions from old country towns with new roads, water systems, phones and stores. In time, the ones that decorated their summerhouses with old furniture from their winterhouses, teared down anything possible and build new: Rooms got bigger, closed kitchen walls demolished and opened to living rooms, gardens covered with porches. While gold sand of beach turned into construction dust, houses changed owners, building altered. Ones that spent their twenty years on a summerhouse, immigrated to shores which does not have chained coffehouses, for another twenty years...” “...Summerhouses: Claiming the Coast examines the topic of sumerhouses as an invension of culture; combines geographical and social influences on historical background...” “...One Hundred Years of Love, examines cinema halls, spaces that create concrete connection between audience and movie, as “audience chapels” and presents them nostalgically from the very first halls to todays’ festival theaters. Objects which provides a link between audience and movies such as newspaper announcements, movie brochures, magazines and posters are exhibited in addition to cinema fanaticism on different sections....” “...This exhibition covers for the most striking aspects between photography and modernity in the context of Ottoman Empire. The biggest part of the exhibition material is about presentation of modernity through photographs like the photos ordered by Empire in order to introduce Ottoman to western countries. Modernity became a part of photoghraphy and make it an ordinary practice. The visual world we are living in today, borned about 150 years ago. Camera Ottomana, is a critical evaluation and reflection of importance of photography that has the biggest transforming power than any other technological invention at the last century....”
