Introduction

Concept People go to the internet to search for answers to their questions. They also surf the web to discover new artists, new ideas, new experiences. The search bar is the gateway to this world of information; all you need to open the door is the keyword. I see my portfolio book as a collection of designs, waiting to be discovered. By using a search bar as my cover image and in my chapter openers, I want to evoke a sense of exploration and discovery.

Fraser Tea

Digital Design Studio 1 Fall 2021

Deliverable Instructor

UX/UI Lloyd Mitchell

Objective Fraser Tea is an herbal tea company based in Livonia, MI, which serves its tea in cafes across the country. Due to COVID-19, more people prefer to order online, rather than purchasing products in-store or visiting a physical location to order tea. Therefore, Fraser Tea also sells fresh herbal teas to customers online. The goal of this project is to re-design the Fraser Tea website for desktop and mobile platforms.

Approach The concepts I have chosen to market these herbal teas are clarity and conciseness. Compared to consumers of other beverages, the average tea customer is older, so I chose to make the UX/UI easy to understand and as clear as possible. Also, the stable and warm imagery was created by using soft pastel greens and light blues, rather than dull colors.

Scuba Diving School

Visual Thinking Summer 2021

Deliverable Instructor

Brand Visual System Jeremy Stout

Objective SSI (Scuba Schools International) is one of the world’s largest store-based scuba diving training agencies. Despite their efforts to promote this activity, many people avoid scuba diving for safety reasons. However, scuba diving is easy to learn and safer than almost any other sport. Thus, the goal of this project is to emphasize the safety of scuba diving and attract more beginners to this recreational activity.

Approach Because many people think that scuba diving is dangerous, the concept I chose to embody are accessible (easy to learn) and active. Rather than using dull blue and dark green tones, I employed a yellow and orange color palette to create lively images of a fun and safe activity.

Objective The goal of this project is to re-design an episode from the podcast. This American Life, a weekly public radio program and podcast, into a coffee table book. I chose “ The Walls,” which aired on March 16, 2018, a series of vignettes (or “acts”) that explores the theme of walls. I selected keywords, created mood boards, and designed layouts that express the stories of people living in border communities and the walls that divide them.

Approach I used two completely different colors and fonts to express the concept of confrontation and the conflict that often occurs in border regions. I also used diagonal lines across the layout to highlight the images of countries and borders.

Kim Cogan Gallery

Deliverable Instructor

Brand Visual System Hunter Wimmer

Objective Kim Cogan is a San Francisco-based painter who held exhibitions at Hashimoto Contemporary art gallery in August and September 2021. The purpose of this project is to promote and produce deliverables (posters, banners, chapbook, and website) for a gallery exhibition of the artist's work.

Approach Cogan process is fluid and spontaneous. Definition emerges over layers of board and dark pastel tones brushstrokes. That is why his works are somewhat disturbing, but there is also has a sense of cozy and warmth. The overall approach also maintains the disturbing but friendly, dark but comfortable concept.

Objective The goal of this project is to design a coffee table book using the photos of photographer Robert Beresford. I used my design skills to convey the content and meaning of text organization, hierarchy, layout, and grid system.

Approach Because most of the photos are of plants, I used gray and beige tones to convey a calm and stable feeling. In addition, I increased the spacing of the title to express a soft and elegant feeling, and I chose a pastel-toned background throughout.

Objective Cage Fight is an application based on mixed martial arts (MMA), such as boxing and UFC. Users can use the app to look up match schedules, purchase tickets, view upcoming events, and read or watch MMA-related news and videos.

Approach The logo references the shape of a hexagonal cage, where mixed martial arts take place. In addition, the intense and colorful imagery is effectively expressed using a deep purple.

Objective The World Wide Fund for Nature is a global eco-friendly environmental organization. Their efforts ensure that the value of nature is reflected in decision-making from a local to a global scale. In this project, we redesign the logo for this WWF.

Approach The current WWF logo uses a panda logo that doesn't fit their mission. I designed a logo that embodies a tree that is suitable for the harmony between humans and nature, suitable for their mission. The color is green, which symbolizes nature.
