Watch your Wall! Everything you need to know about wall décor….

f a s h i o n . s t y l e . i c o n

o your walls seem drab and uninviting? Do you long for a cosier ambience for your room? The easiest way to infuse life into your house is by changing the décor of the walls. Wall décor can be brought about through endless unique ways which include paints, papers, wall hangings and a lot more. Try these exciting ideas to liven up your home, and your walls would be a statement to everyone who visits your place. Finish it to begin with The first step to a great looking wall is finishing it right. Use paints, textures, or wallpapers to finish your walls. ( instead, to make the walls pleasing) While paints are the most common method to cover the walls, textured wall finishes can create an interesting and dramatic effect. Textured wall paints are available in a wide range of colours from white, pastels, glossy to metallic and sparkling colours. The Royale Play collection by Asian Paints is (has) a range of such readyto use special effect finishes. Effects like brushing, spatula, combing, sponging, ragging, and colourwash available in hues to suit every mood can give your wall the rich look you want. Wall papers on the other hand are also a stimulating way to cover walls. Wallpapers not only give

your wall a complete new look ( an elegance) ,but also prove beneficial in hiding the cracks on it. Available in plain colours, stripes and various motifs, these help you decorate the surrounding walls in a time saving, yet fashionable way. Once a great (the main )surface is ready, add on from the following to complete the look(s). Off the shelf A wall shelf is great to display items like books, photos and memorabilia. It not only helps you store in an organised manner, but also help highlight the objects of your choice. Available in various sizes to suit your needs and budget, a wall shelf can be an attractive addition to your room. Mirror, Mirror on the wall You may not have a magical mirror to answer all your questions, but by choosing the right mirror you can magically enhance the look of your room. Apart from the basic purpose of reflecting, mirrors in their wide variety of shapes, sizes,

styles and materials can give a makeover to any room. Mirrors can be used to decorate most areas of your house including lobby, dining, bedrooms, and the corridors. For a bigger wall choose a well framed mirror that will be both useful and appealing. For a smaller wall, or a pillar, choose a set

of mirrors of varying sizes. The light reflecting from these would create a sense of spaciousness while giving a modern and sophisticated look to the room.

the look of your wall. If your house has a modern appeal, choose a design to match the same. To add luxury to a classic interior, antique clocks are the ideal option.

Picture perfect

Light it right

Instead of hanging one picture on a wall, opt for a picture frame that is designed to hold multiple pictures. Multiple picture frames not only save space but also invigorate the wall while giving it a much personalised feel. Select the colour of the frame to match the interiors, while choosing from the perfect zigzag, oval or rectangular shape to suit your need. Put together a few pictures to bring a focus spot on your wall. Multiple photo frames are definitely the way to go, if you want to showcase your memories while creating an impression that lasts.

Wall lights can go much beyond the purpose of lighting. Mount them on the walls to either cast their lights upwards or downwards. Up-lights cast their beams upwards usually to reflect light off the ceiling. Various colours of light beams can be used to create an interesting play of lights on the wall. You can also use down-lights on your walls either singly or just above an object, like a painting you want to focus upon.

Enhance with a painting Wall paintings can add a huge deal of excitement to your otherwise dull and boring walls. If you are an art lover, you can adorn your walls with the paintings from your favourite artist. Else, you can choose from the designs that express your personal taste. Also, you can accentuate the effect of a painting by using lights, or other knick knacks like beaded curtains around it. A timeless timepiece Classic or contemporary, this is a musthave for your wall. A wall clock can be a stylish yet functional way to enhance

As walls draw the attention of the onlooker instantly, its décor deserves a little attention from you. There is a varied array of options to choose from. So, mix your creativity with these ideas and you are sure to create a look that is interesting in its own exceptional way-a wall that would be welcoming for you and all!!! - Priyanshika Sharma

Let your heart out! Graffiti consists of inscriptions, slogans, or drawings painted or scribbled on a wall. If you have an artist within you, unleash it and express yourself with this popular mode of wall décor. Just spray, paint or scribble, and your walls would be a reflection of your true self!

Yo ho, Yo ho! - a pirate’s life for me Get ready to walk the plank.

oday, people have lots of choices. Be it shopping, entertainment or food, the choices available are aplenty. So putting up a new restaurant and to attract people depends on lots of factors from the ambience of the place to the quality and taste of the food. And everything seems to be in the correct place as far as ‘Once Upon a Pirate’ is concerned. The name in itself triggers the interest in you. And you would want to give it a try. As you enter the restaurant, the interiors are bright and refreshing. The walls are adorned with the items associated with the pirates. Antique guns, swords, treasure box, maps and much more present themselves for you to look at while you await your orders. So how was this venture inspired? Mr.Pravin, Managing Partner, is eager to share the experience. “We wanted to give the people a different theme in both food and the place. The idea of the pirate theme just dropped and got us all exited. I was already a collector of pirate items and we also brought collectibles from around the world to design the restaurant.” In reply to the speciality of the restaurant he quotes that they don’t compromise on quality of food and the wide range of the menu is what makes them stand apart. True to the menu is it

door or Chinese, every cuisine has its own array of food and everything looks tempting. Every category of food has been divided into three parts – From the Barn (Chicken, Lamb and Goat etc), From the Sea (Shrimp, Fish, Crab etc) and From the Farm (all veggies). The menu has been designed in such a way, so as to not to let you be bored with it in a few visits to the restaurant. And I agree. So enough talking and let us, oops, let me delve into the menu to give orders to the pirate, the attendant I mean. As is the tradition, I started with the soup. The Veg Jade Spinach soup, though not out of the world, proved to be a nice start. For the starters, I ordered Volcano Chicken form the Chinese cuisine. The chicken was nicely cooked and spicy as I requested. Chicken Hariyali Tikka is another worthy starter and with the mint chutney, it makes a delightful combination. The start-

word, the range of really wide. Be Indian or Tan-

ers also include an array of Shorbas of Paneer, Murgh, Tamatar and Dingri. And Kebabs is a must-try and its taste is sure to leave your mouth watering. Moving from the starters, I ordered a paratha and kulcha to go with Harra Murgh Chicken gravy. The cashew based chicken gravy is surely a winner and complimented the rotis’ well. The gravy menu is as long as other food varieties in the menu. For the veggies, Kofta, Aloo, Paneer and Dal are there to suit your needs. Chicken, Shrimp, Fish, Crab make a line for the non-veg species. Following the rotis, I dug myself into the Chicken Biriyani. The spices were not overly done as in many restaurants and made for a great main course. If you want a different taste in Biriyani, you can select between Dum or Hyderabadi or Mughalai. Pulav is for those who are not the spicy types. Kashmiri, Paneer, Gobi, Jeera are some of the types of Pulav to opt from. Noodles and Fried rice are the Chinese

counterparts for the main course. Chicken Szechuan noodle is what I had and will be the choice for the noodle lovers. Once my stomach was almost full, it was time for the desserts to show their flair. Choco soufflé and Honey noodles with ice-cream made the whole afternoon enjoyable and gave a suitable finish to the meal. As a whole, ‘Once Upon a Pirate’ proved to be a fine restaurant to head to after a stroll at the beach, or for a group lunch with friends or colleagues. The ambience and the food are sure to give you a different experience as a whole. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.

Whether you are a person who glorifies patterns inspired by history; or a person who likes simple, modern designs, to go with your personal fashion idea and mood; you have got to spend some time, to pick and choose the best collection to form your priceless gold wardrobe. Besides the style element, another essential thing you have got to look into is that of caratage. This is important because, it determines the amount of gold that is in a piece of jewellery. Ideally a piece of jewellery has about 22 carats of gold. A 24 carat gold piece is mostly for investment purposes; it is categorised as pure gold and is used for exchange and investments. When you build your wardrobe, you have to shop wisely. Your collection needs to be complete and complementary as well. So shop for basic pieces of jewellery that can include a neck piece, earrings, pendants, bracelet, etc; these are the basic must-haves in any wardrobe. Your basic jewellery needs to be chosen appropriately. The right designs, right emotions, and the most exquisitely styled jewellery are what you need to find your hands upon. Up for a ride! Carpooling comes with many benefits: its saves fuel and costs, beats fuel price hikes, and can help you juggle a tight time schedule. However, choosing carpool buddies deserves a lot of thought… ith fuel prices on the upward rise, many individuals and even companies are looking at the idea of carpooling favourably. While carpooling with friends is a common thing – mothers carpool with other mothers to take their children to swimming class and take turns instead to ease up busy schedules. Carpool deals are often struck among friends – the rise of carpooling companies and agencies is a thing of the recent times. More companies, especially call centres, have taken to booking cabs for three or four employees from the same residential area – a carpool of sorts. Moreover, individuals have started advertising their carpool needs online – through carpool agency websites or networking sites, and striking up a convenient arrangement to work with people they meet online itself.

fuel, and it will be easy on your pocket too.

Why carpool?

There are a lot of carpooling companies and agencies

The benefits of carpooling are many: it saves fuel, money and gives your busy schedule an efficient fix. Carpooling is a green choice: it is one way to conserve

Do-it-yourself You can create a carpool group by yourself – with friends. If you have friends who live close by, then why not carpool to that Friday night salsa lesson that you all go to. Create a system where everyone gets passed a turn at being driver. If your children go for a daily swimming class along with some neighbours’ kids, then resort to striking up a carpool deal with them. It will do your schedule some wonders and maybe you can fit in that glass painting or Pilates class that driving your child to swimming class was keeping you from. Carpooling Companies

that match your requirements with others and offer professional carpooling and taxi services. Ask around for the one that seems most professional and is closest to your residential locality. Usually these companies require you to register and charge you an initial nominal fee before they form a carpool for you; and it might not happen in a single day. These companies also offer hire services to corporates. Carpooling Online Most carpooling companies offer online services for convenience and it works the same way – you will need to register and then strike up with people who have similar carpool needs in your locality. Otherwise, you can also post your carpool needs on networking sites and other sites that deal with carpooling as well, although this is obviously less effective and less

safe .

go green

Exercise utmost care when choosing carpooling partners. If you are forming a carpool with friends or neighbours, make sure your time schedules match conveniently to avoid hiccups later. If you are using a carpooling agency, make sure they are well-recommended and professional – also, meet your carpool partners before you decide to go ahead with the carpool and talk to them. Carpooling online is not highly recommended, but even if it is a bona fide website, insist on meeting your carpooling partners, and avoid carpooling late at night with strangers. Sharing your ride makes our earth greener, but make sure you do it with the right crowd!

Be street smart! Here are some websites you can check out to find your carpool buddies: Or check in regular classifieds in local websites or newspapers.

From Waste

SETC asked to pay injured passenger

he lifestyle and consumption habits of people have been changing for the better of late due to their higher earning capacities, but have, at the same time, resulted in a gargantuan problem of disposal of waste and garbage, not only in Chennai, but in most urban areas worldwide. The authorities are trying out all methods to minimise the problem by recycling waste to generate energy or tap gas for cooking purposes. It is indeed shocking to learn that some countries, for want of garbage filling areas, are quietly dumping all types of refuse in third world countries thereby affecting their ecosystems and people’s health. In our country, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is giving all help for setting up projects to generate Energy from urban and industrial wastes including garbage. The technologies being presently used are biomethanation and combustion followed by biogas engines or steam turbines for power generation. The cost of power generation from urban and industrial wastes is about Rs.2.50 to Rs.4 per unit of electricity depending upon the type of wastes and the technology deployed. The Ministry is funding such Waste-toEnergy projects. But the main constraint to such schemes is non-segregation of garbage into degradable and non-degradable ones. So far, a total of 36 projects with an aggregate capacity of 83.13 MW power from urban and industrial wastes have been set up in the country. Chennai project: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) some months ago entered into an integrated solid waste management project deal with a Hyderabad-based firm to maintain the wholesale market at Koyambedu and a 250-kw unit to generate power from organic waste. Under the deal, about 150

to 180 metric tonnes of garbage will be removed each day from around 3, 500 shops in the area. The project is the first of its kind in the country. The power plant uses the organic waste collected in the market to generate power through biomethanation. According to the CMDA, the entire waste generated by the market is not used in the Rs.5 crorepower plant. Only a half of it will be the fuel for recovery of energy. The plant has a capacity to generate about 4,800 units of electricity a day. The garbage collected in the market is segregated as biodegradable and nonbiodegradable. While the biodegradable waste is used to make fertilizers, the non-biodegradable waste is dumped at the Kodingayur yard. The vegetable waste is reduced into miniscule particles and fed into a cement concrete digester. The process involves decomposition of organic matter by microbial action to produce methane rich biogas. This gas which comprises 65 per cent methane and 35 per cent carbon dioxide, is transferred into a gasholder from where it operates an engine for production of electrical energy. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board takes the power generated from the plant at Rs.3.15 per unit. The digested slurry is collected in the effluent buffer tank for dewatering. Dewatering is done in a screw press. The effluent liquid from the screw press is used as fertilizer on CMDA campus or pumped to the nearly sewage treatment plant for further treatment. The

dewatered cakes are disposed of as

manure. Five such projects are in operation in Tamil Nadu in Salem, Namakkal and Dharmapuri districts. Biogas is also generated as methane gas from biodegradable organic wastes such as cow dung, kitchen waste, poultry litter, night soil etc. through a process called anaerobic digestion and in which a series of biological and chemical process take place. This process also involves ‘Biomethanation process’. A research team has calculated that the available landfill waste in the world can produce 82.9 billion liters of cellulosic ethanol and the resulting biofuel can reduce global carbon emissions in the range of 29.2% to 86.1% for every unit of energy produced. Biofuels like cellulosic ethanol obtained from processed urban waste may provide the desired solution. According to Mr Hugh Tan, Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore, “Our results suggest that fuel from processed waste biomass, such as paper and cardboard, is a promising clean energy solution. If developed fully this biofuel could simultaneously meet part of the world’s energy needs, while also combating carbon emissions and fossil fuel dependency.” - Correspondent

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in Krishnagiri has ordered the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) to pay Rs 19,140 to a woman passenger who was injured when the bus hit a speed breaker. Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, the complainant, was thrown up from her seat and hit the roof of the bus when she was travelling with her husband from Hosur to Tiruchi in an SETC bus in April 2009.

According to Vijayalakshmi, the bus was driven in a rash and negligent manner and did not slow down even while crossing speed breakers. As a result, she sustained injuries on the head, hip and back and was unable to continue the journey. Her husband also suffered mild injuries. After taking some rest, they engaged a taxi from Salem to Tiruchi, the complainant said. She prayed to the district consumer forum to order for a compensation for the physical and mental agony she and her husband suffered and for the additional travel expenditure caused due to the negligence of the bus driver. But the SETC management said in its counter that the bus was driven only at the permissible speed, the transport corporation had not acted in a negligent manner and there was, therefore, no deficiency in service on its part. But the consumer forum did not accept the transport corporation’s contentions and said that the complaint was believable going by the documents submitted and versions of both the parties. The bus driver had the responsibility to ensure the safety of the passengers. The forum asked the SETC to pay to the complainant a sum of Rs 14,140 towards travel and medical expenses, Rs 3,000 for the mental agony caused to her and her husband and Rs 2,000 towards her cost of the litigation.

The Beauty of the Beast O

n May 8, 2010, Mercedes Benz kicked off a unique ‘Star Drive’ programme at the Sriperumbudur racetrack in Chennai. The event featured expert drivers who demonstrated the key strengths of the cars and the various safety features. This was a treat to the visitors who experienced watching some death-defying stunts, which displayed the state-of-the-art features that are built in in the Mercedes cars featured. The event was supported by Michelin and Mobil 1 oil, who were the presenting partners. On the ramp The cars that were on display were MLClass, Gl-Class, C-Class and E-Class models. The customers were shown the different dynamics of the vehicles where the key focus was on safety combined with performance in on-road and off-road conditions. The SUV models namely the ML and GL 350 were put to the test with some challenging conditions, such as driving on the ramp with two tyres off the ground or driving at a speed of 120kms and using the power brakes in full effect so that the car stays on the ground. The latter was demonstrated using the sedan type cars such as limited edition models of C Class and E Class. The cars passed muster in all these tests with élan and it was truly a great sight to watch. Tough and the toughest The cars that were used for demonstration were exceptional to say the least, which is not such a big surprise, given the fact that they were manufactured by MercedesBenz, but some of them were definitely the cynosure of all eyes. The GL-Class model is something that we do not come across that often and have definitely never come across in India. They are sleek and stylish and

the interiors are very similar to the MLClass models, but ML Class is definitely better than the GL-Class in terms of performance and off-road activities. As for the C and E Class, the former is already a huge hit among the Mercedes lovers in the city and this is no surprise. Even though E Class might have an edge over the C-Class models in terms of looks, the C Class definitely holds its own in terms of horsepower. Both cars are extremely safe to drive and drivers of these cars can rest assured that they will receive a complete backup in difficult times. Safety First!

The Star Drive event also had on display the new E and C-Class models, which are truly world-class cars. Mercedes’ stronghold in the world of automobile manufacture was on display at the Star Drive event, with a large number of customers being present. The stress on improved performance coupled with the various safety features definitely made a mark on the audience, as did the emphasis that was placed on saving fuel. Overall, the event helped prove that Mercedes Benz is definitely up there with the best.

As mentioned earlier, the primary focus of this programme was to bring about an awareness of the safety mechanics in coordination with the solutions that the vehicles are built with. The primary focus here is on ABS, which stands for Automatic Braking System wherein the brake adapts itself automatically when it senses danger, which helps to protect the driver in case of danger. Even while going downhill, the brakes adapt to the situation so easily that it is a definite treat to drive.

Joining hands with Pre-Safe A special mention must be made of PreSafe for kick starting this movement for the safety of the driver. They have done a great deal to reduce the possibilities of any kind of danger, so much so that there are even special sensors that detect the air pressure of the tyres. Needless to say, all the Mercedes Benz cars that were featured are equipped with airbags, which help cushion the driver in case of direct impact. Chennai public were enthralled by the gravity defying stunts by the stunt master on his BMW F800R. After seeing Chris Pfeiffer, one thing is clear. The guy doesn’t need two wheels to ride a bike. The event was conducted by the energy drinks giant, Red Bull, as part of their campaign to strengthen their branding in the country. Thanks to Red Bull, we were able to see the magician at work. Variety is the

Spice of my Life! Director Ameer

e’s become a household name after the resounding success of his ‘Paruthiveeran’ in 2007. The film went on to win critical acclaim and his film reached all the way up to the Berlin Film Festival bringing International fame to the director and its cast. We catch up with director turned actor Ameer who was last seen donning the greasepaint in ‘Yogi’ directed by Subramania Siva. Now he is back to directing once again and this time it is a commercial project. With Ameer, you’ll never know what’s up next.

on sets

l i g h t . c a m e r a . a c t i o n

On the ‘Yogi’ experience… I decided to act in the lead role and the experience was really good. The story was set in the slums and was about a baby which is brought up by a ‘goonda’ character who discovers his softer side after the kid comes into his life. The film had Madhumita, Snehan - the lyricist, Ashok Vincent and Devaraj - a leading journalist in main roles. The next frame My next project is called ‘Aadhi Bhagavan’ and is produced by first timers Anbu Pictures and producer J Anbazhagan, a politician who forays into film production with this movie. The lyrics are by Snehan and the music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja who teamed up with me in ‘Paruthiveeran’ earlier. This is in fact our fourth film together. Jeyam Ravi plays the hero. All about love This story is going to be different from my previous films. It’s about obsessive love as the tagline suggests and will be a total ‘Chennai’ story. I am not doing ‘Madurai’ subject for the time being! (laughs) Going commercial ‘Aadhi Bhagavan’ is going to be an out and out commercial film. I don’t want to be stuck in an image and make films only for festivals. I am a creator and want to do a variety of films. Look at Spielberg who did Schindlers List and Jurassic Park which are so vastly different! I have grown up watching films like ‘Sakalakalavallavan’ myself! I want to entertain my audience in another style this time. We will complete the film by the end of the year. I am going to include 25 new faces. And yes, there might be a kiss in the film, wait and watch! The film is about how love exists for everyone. I think I have been inspired by the story of Adam and Eve somewhere down the line. On brickbats and bouquets I take it all with a smile. The perspective after all is in the eyes of the beholder. On Jeyam Ravi After ‘Paruthiveeran’, I wanted to work with him. He’s a sincere artist whose potential is yet to be fully realised. - Rinku Gupta

Just Ameer! Fit on board: For ‘Yogi’, I had to really get into shape and the practice continues. I drink a lot of water and have become a regular at the gym. All time ‘reel’ favourites: 16 Vayadaniley, Uddiripookal, Aval Apadi Thaan….the list is endless! My pick from the world cinema: It’s tough to make a list but I would include Titanic, The Ten Commandments, Life is Beautiful and Sholay Love to eat @: Dhaba Express, Nayar Mess, Malgudi Days Ma cuisine: Fish fry and other Kerala seafood. My shopping space: Kumaran stores, Citi Centre etc.
