Popular artists - The ‘Limberjacks’, regulars at the Girgarre Moosic Muster.
Record crowds flock to the muster Moosic Muster organisers watched in delight as campers began to arrive early in the week for the 2018 Girgarre Moosic Muster. Caravans and tents soon popped up to the sound of music ringing through the pretty bush park days before the official festival program began on Thursday. Director Jan Smith beamed throughout the whole festival. “It was wonderful to see,” she said. “There were over 170 campers and the feedback has been terrific and worth all the planning that takes place, pretty much from the end of the last Muster. We’ve done our committee, and our community proud once again”. Workshop Programmer, Di Burgmann was also more than pleased with the response to the workshop offerings introduced this year. There were queues waiting to take part in the extra Walk-Up sessions on Thursday. The new ‘Band from a Hat’ (where three names were randomly drawn and participants sent off to work up a song) proving very popular. Workshops, all 42 of them, were also well received with large crowds participating. Pictures from the Muster on pages 3-5.

FROM THE EDITORS DESK Girgarre’s Moosic Muster is over, done and dusted for another year. It was nothing if not a resounding success, attested to by the many accolades the committee are still receiving. The weather did us no favours but, as always, capricious or not it was no deterrent to a good time. Behind every successful event there is always an enormous amount of hard work, if not blood, sweat and tears. And this festival was no exception. I particularly want to commend the hard working volunteers who, in many cases did not have an opportunity to participate in some of the workshops on offer because they were keeping a birds eye view of all that was going on; counting heads and checking all was in order, sometimes ducking from venue to venue by bicycle! But most of all, it’s the behind the scenes workers who set up chairs, cleaned toilets, manned the info
van and kept the grounds spic and span who need a gold star or two. I am a regular attendee at festivals and I have to say no other event I’ve been to comes anywhere near the cleanliness of toilets and grounds, or the willingness of behind the scenes volunteers to go out of their way to be helpful as they do at Girgarre. So congratulations to all on another successful Muster. Well done. I would also like to thank Claire Roberts, Manager HiViz Event Managing and Promotions, who has generously donated many hours creative work to update the layout of our Gazette. Keep your articles and photos coming in won’t you. The Gazette is a wonderful opportunity to showcase this unique and active small community. Share the good news with others.

GIRGARRE REVIVAL NEWS Tuning up the Junkestra Small Town Transformation Arts Program 2018 Girgarre Small Towns Transformation Project will be up and running again from February 19 when Artist in Residence, Graeme Leak comes back to Girgarre to take up part two of the music and arts program he began in 2017. Building on the legacy of last years musical fence by developing the ‘Junkestra’ concept already in place in Girgarre, the Supermarket will become the hub and workshop for the visit, alongside regular weekly music-making sessions in the hall. The plan is to create an ensemble from locals and develop and compose music for this group week to week, culminating in the performance of a piece that embodies the re-kindling and rise of Girgarre's spirit, to be performed at the opening concert of the new sound shell in April. Graeme will develop the program on his arrival and plans to use the resources on hand, but he also intends to begin playing music with everyone as soon as possible. The Girgarre 'Junkestra' is shaping up to be fun and a surprisingly beautiful concept. A lot of people probably think they cannot possibly play music, but as Graeme says, “I've found over the years that in fact everyone can participate in music-making on some level. Obviously some are more experienced than others, and some may be total beginners. I find ways to accommodate these different skill levels in one group and create music that gives everyone something to enjoy and feel a part of. Everyone will be a part of the creative process too and see the piece take shape week to week. You won't have to go home
and practice! All the work will get done in the sessions.” All community groups are invited and welcome. Graeme intends to collaborate with any and all existing community ensembles including choirs, brass bands, uke groups, recorder groups, line dancers, indoor bowlers etc. Folk from neighbouring towns and communities are invited too. All that will be needed musically is to find one note and play it beautifully in tune and it will build from there.
Graeme Leak Artist in Residence and Wallace Williams of tin violin fame.
All Systems Go With The The work on the Sound Shell over in the Gargarro Gardens is progressing well. The sand mounds (right) are in place ready for the concreting of the slab. If all things come together as planned there will be an official opening in April. Watch this space.

Bernie is a most interesting and well travelled man, mostly by backpacking and a great deal of it on foot. Often, while walking through villages and farms, he would step in and help, maybe with the loading of hay bales as he did in France, or help a peasant family bind a wheat crop in Turkey as he walked towards Gallipoli. That way, as Bernie said, you get to know the people, they invite you into their homes and let you share their lives for a few days at a time. It is a wonderful, first hand experience. For those who missed it, Bernie’s Gallipoli story will appear in April’s Gazette.

SPECIAL EVENTS FOR THE LOVE OF NATURE Endangered Species Art Exhibition
Under threat, Squirrel Gliders. Photos John Child
Expressions of interest are sought from artists in any medium to display work featuring threatened species for an exhibition called ‘For The Love Of Nature’ . The exhibition will be held in June in the Alton Gallery Echuca. An initiative of the Strathallan Family Landcare Group, the focus of the exhibition is to highlight endangered and threatened species in northern Victoria. Suitable subjects for an exhibit may be anything the artist/photographer is interested in that’s deemed threatened. Remnant vegetation, maybe a significant tree, a bird like the superb Parrot or a native animal to suggest just a few.
President of the SFLG Veronica Groat is keen to educate the people who come to the exhibition about the uniqueness and beauty of our local flora and fauna. “I intend to write an explanation about each exhibit,” she said recently “If we can increase the understanding of the fragility, and wonderful diversity of plants and animals we have in this region. We will then be able to talk about them with some pride and understanding”. Veronica and partner John run a captive breeding program for the endangered Squirrel Gliders from their property along the Campaspe river at Strathallan. It has been successful producing 17 young to date from the 19 breeding adults they have in their care. They are now working with the Dept. of the Environment, Land and Water Plannning to survey the existing population before working out a policy
to release the Gliders they’ve bred back to their natural habitat. The Strathallan Landcare group has also successfully undertaken a nesting box and tree planting program along the river from the Ogilvie St. bridge in Echuca to the Campaspe/Murray mouth thanks to support from the Shire of Campaspe. The trees when established will support the protected Squirrel Glider population as it re establishes itself along the Campaspe river. More information is available from Veronica Groat. T: 54849293. GIRGARRE UKULELE MATES (GUM) ___________________________________________
___________________________________________
The group meets every 1st and 3rd (and 5th) Wednesday afternoon at 1.30pm in the Activities Room at the Girgarre Community Cottage. This fun group comes together and fills the area with beautiful music. The group is appropriate for both new and experienced players of the ukulele and we would love to include you in their next get together. Phone Lyn for more information on 5859 0297
Zoos are calling on you to recycle your old mobile phone, routers, ADSL modems and cables to help save one of our closest living relatives. A rare mineral ore called coltan, found in many mobile phones and other items, is mined in gorilla habitat. The mining is accelerating the decline in gorilla numbers and at least 10 other African primate species. By simply recycling an old mobile phone, the pressure on gorilla habitat is reduced and money raised from refurbished mobile phones supports conservation projects in Africa.

AROUND OUR DISTRICT Stanhope CERT - Membership Drive a Success Happy New Year to all members of our community. We had a great response to our drive for new members for our CERT Team. We now have six people signed up to take part in the training to become new CERT members. Their training will begin with an induction in late February and continue with some face to face sessions and some on-line subjects to provide our new members with the training they need to become First Responders. There will be a further training session later in the 2018, so if you've been thinking about joining but haven't contacted us yet, please call. It's not too late. Becoming a CERT gives you some great skills and helps the community. Contact Pauline Keegan 0414 495 311

SPORT NEWS Carpet Bowls
Tennis Club
The Girgarre Carpet Bowlers are taking steps to increase interest in the competition back to a time when most local groups had a team. Treasurer Rob Varcoe said recently “There were up to 12 teams going back many years ago now. Our focus for the 2018 season is to try and attract more juniors to come and have a go with a view to growing the competition again. Carpet bowls are not hard and the few young ones that have been coming really enjoy it. Kids like to be with other kids” he said. Rob also said, “We are planning to organise some sausage sizzles to raise enough funds allowing us to reduce our entry fees and cover the small but significant costs of hall hire and insurance. This will make the competition more attractive. Insurance cover is essential and covers players who travel to competitions in other regional centres. If anyone would care to come and assist us, we would appreciate it.” The Annual Meeting of the Carpet Bowls group will be held on Thursday February 22 in the Memorial hall at 7:30pm. The agenda will include fund raising to cover the cost of hiring the hall; insurance and entry costs for 2018 season. There will be a raffle to be drawn on Thursday March 29. Tickets are $1 each and available from Club members, Rob or Theo George following the AGM. Three prizes of baskets of Easter Eggs on offer. Bowls competition will begin on Thursday 5 April and run weekly until the end of August. These dates and an update on annual fees will be confirmed following the Annual meeting on 22 February.
This season the Tennis Club has 4 junior teams and 2 senior teams entered in competition. The juniors are once again being coached by the capable Sheree Starling. Our section 2 team is having a great season, so far winning all of their games and second on the ladder. Two of their players, Joel Asquith and Liam Francis, are also at the top of player rankings, having won 70% of all games they have played. It is great to see all of our junior and senior teams having a few wins this season. This year we have started the HotShots program, aimed at introducing children 3-8yrs old to the terrific game of tennis. 5 children have enjoyed HotShots, learning the basics of tennis while also developing fine and gross motor skills and co-ordination.
