GIRGARRE REVIVAL NEWS
Spirit Rising - Gargarro Gala Opening 14 April I AM having a wonderful time preparing for the Gala Opening of the Soundshell. We are now in WEEK FIVE, with the performance taking place in WEEK EIGHT (Saturday 14 April). There are 35 players in the orchestra, and I have been running seven rehearsals a week, although we are cutting down to four to capture more people at once. Instrument creation has moved at a pace, driven by Wallace Williams, Pete Gibson and myself. After much experimentation and fabrication we now have an ‘orchestra’ of drums, strings and percussion, mostly from up-cycled materials, which works brilliantly when joined by ‘proper’ instruments. There is a part to play for everyone who wants to be involved, although if you are considering joining but have not been along to a rehearsal yet I suggest you do so ASAP as we are well under way with quite a lot of learned pieces. But you have plenty of time to catch up so do come along and check it out. The main sections of the piece, called Spirit Rising, are now written, and most of them have been tried out in rehearsal. By WEEK SIX I hope to be running the show in rehearsals, and by WEEK SEVEN we will move as many rehearsals to the Soundshell as possible to get used to the stage. The score will be fully notated and documented however we won’t be using music on the night. We are memorising as we go with lots of drilling and repetition in rehearsals.
Our producer Patrick Cronin was in Girgarre last week and attended all rehearsals. He and I worked on shaping the show into a draft running order with a production schedule. He will be here for a day of rehearsals on 4 April and will then be in Girgarre from Wed 11 April until the performance. Patrick and I have worked on many projects together before, notably Raising the Roof for the Arts Centre Melbourne in 2012 and a decade together on stage in the Spaghetti Western Orchestra’. Patrick plays the trumpet, sings, plays percussion and is an excellent whistler. He’s also a terrific event organiser and it is great to have him on board. The show, featuring all local talent, has a wide variety of elements with a few surprises. So if you hear the call of the drums, follow your ears to the rehearsal room. Everyone is welcome to sit and listen to any rehearsal, and you may feel moved to take up the sticks and stand by your neighbours to join the thriving ‘Junkestra’. By Graeme Leak, www.graemeleak.com E:graeme@graemeleak.com or phone 0427 693 960.
The gates open at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm show Food vans and pre-show entertainment, followed by a traditional ‘Jigarre Jam’. COME AND JOIN IN - IT’S A LOT OF FUN.
That’s the way, just place your finger here….

Spirit Rising – the Gargarro Junkestra Experience What the players think... Maureen Shepherd (left): “What a lot of fun and plenty of laughs, learning to play in time and to actually count and to listen to the sound of the other instruments. Quite amazing. I love listening to the different sounds produced by the containers/barrels/ drums”. Maestro Graeme...this is how it’s done
John Warde (above): “It’s heaps of fun playing Jan’s bass but, after this, I'm not intending to take it up any time soon”
Sandra McDonald (above): “It’s been interesting to learn how to follow a conductor. I realise how important they are to an orchestra. Great fun too.”
Above: Wallace and his tin violin and Lynne Kowalik, visiting from Canberra, who made it sound very nice
Patti Harrison (above): “I am finding the junk orchestra fascinating and engaging. It takes you beyond what you think of and understand of an orchestra.”

THE BUSHRANGERS HIT TOWN
Have you often spotted all the vans over in the Park area behind the Hall and wondered who they were and where they’ve come from? Well, low and behold Girgarre was once again transformed into a caravan park just after the last market. Turns out it was the members of the Australian Caravan Club’s Bushrangers Branch. The Bushrangers are a Victorian based group that mainly bush camp but also frequent APEX and Lions Club sites, with an occasional visit to small towns like Girgarre. They had previously spent the week, with approximately 80 other members, at the Events Centre in Elmore for the Chairman’s Muster. Having arrived in Girgarre they noticed the town was small in size but big in community atmosphere. They became swept up in chatting to people and becoming involved in events of which they had no idea were happening ahead of time but thoroughly enjoyed. John Warde and Jan Smith’s
Mark Noonan, Noonan’s Landscape & Design Service installing the watering system. And the seed being sprayed on, below
assistance was particularly welcomed, as too was hearing the ‘band’ practicing in the hall with Graeme Leak, watching the SoundShell construction and one member even joining the Quilters. They will definitely be recommending others to visit our vibrant little town! From Girgarre, the majority will continue north to Wills Bend (Murray River, Moama), Spencers Bridge (Gannawarra, near Kerang) and then spend Easter at Murrem Beach. There are 50 branches of the Australian Caravan Club, with over 4,500 members nationwide. Some are small trips and numbers whilst other are much larger with some musters attracting over 200 caravans! If you would like more information about the Australian Caravan Club please visit their website www.australiancaravanclub.com.au.

Walking to Gallipoli By Bernie Ryan ONE OF MY most moving experiences during my 25 years of backpacking around the world was my visit in 2008 to Turkey and Gallipoli. Before making my way to Gallipoli, I spent time out in the rural areas walking from village to village. The weather was perfect for walking in July, and staying in the villages at night and eating Turkish food was most enjoyable. Each morning before I set off on my days walk I would shop at the local market in the village. My staple diet was Turkish bread, tomatoes, olives, cheese, fruit and water. I always had my sleeping bag in my back pack just in case I was not near a village at night fall, so I could roll it out and sleep under the Turkish moon and stars. One lunch time, after walking for several hours, I sat down under some wild apricot trees growing in a rocky area. It was a beautiful spot, the trees were laden with fruit with the most amazing flavour, ripened as they were by the sun and growing in such a wonderful environment. Nearby, there was a family cutting a small crop of oats with a sickle and scythes. During my break a young boy about 12 years old came over to me and offered me some bread and cheese. In return I gave the boy, whose name was Ihan, some of the watermelon I had bought at the market earlier that morning. He asked me in broken English, what was my name and where did I
come from, how old I was, and, welcome. After he went back to his family, I decided to go over to them and Ihan's father, Joseph, came to meet me and took my hand in greeting. I spent an amazing afternoon working with them. Cutting the oats with the scythe, laying it in small heaps, which Ihan would tie into bundles with long pieces of green oats, and then loading it onto the donkeys. Ihan's grandmother then climbed on to a small pony and as she rode towards their home the donkeys just followed her. The rest of the family and I also followed them to their home which was made from mud bricks and surrounded by a large brick wall, there to stop the donkeys, pony, sheep and goats from wandering away at night. Joseph's wife and daughter prepared a great meal of tomatoes, onion, garlic, zucchini and egg plant in a pot which was then put on a bed of coals outside the house. Water and spices were added and when cooked it was spooned into bowls and served with fresh Turkish bread. It was so good. After the meal was finished we tried to have a conversation. As I did not know any Turkish and they had very little English, it was very difficult. I had some Australian coins which had kangaroos and emus on them. Ihan was fascinated, so I gave them to him. When I said I would be leaving tomorrow on my way to Gallipoli, Joseph left the room and returned with a photo in a small frame, it was a man in a
Turkish uniform. Joseph said to me, "Aussie, Gelibalou (Gallipoli)". It left me wondering if maybe it was his grandfather and he had been killed by an Australian. It was a moving moment. Here I was spending the night with a Turkish family in their country and there was no animosity, just friendship. When I left early the next morning on my way to Gallipoli, Ihan took my hand and walked with me to the main road. There were tears in my eyes as we parted. Another three days walking and I was in Gallipoli. It had rained most of the way on the last day and I was very wet, with very muddy boots. I must have looked a sight when I presented myself to the receptionist at the Australia House Hostel. An Aussie voice said "I think you could do with a Vic bitter", it was great to hear that Aussie accent. I realised I had been wandering around Turkey for three weeks, speaking very little English, unaware of what was happening in the world...that evening we had a barbecue tea then watched the movie, The Anzacs. Myself, and seven young Australian and New Zealanders, aged between 18 and 25 left for Anzac Cove in a minibus at 4 am. It occurred to me that my young companions were the same age the young colonial boys would have been when they landed at Anzac Cove. We arrived just as the sun was rising, the same time the landing started on 25th April 1915. Continued on page 11

WHERE POPPIES GROW a poem by Mick Coventry I was a shearer. A drover. I plied the tools of trade. A doctor. A lawyer. I was Australian made. I was tough and uncomplaining, I saw the sunset glow. I fought. I tried. I bled. I died. In a field - where poppies grow. I was loyal to King and country. Australian to my core. On landscapes bearing bloodstains of the men who'd gone before. I still share the camaraderie of mates from long ago. We rest as one. 'Neath a foreign sun. In a field - where poppies grow.
My name is documented. Carefully written down. Upon the noble cenotaph that stands in every town. I still wish and hope for freedom that was ours so long ago. I do not weep. I soundly sleep. In a field - where poppies grow. The Anzac ranks are thinning with the passing of each year. As the men who shared a special bond slowly disappear. But the memory of the fallen is in every Anzac marching row Their spirit is free. They rest with me. In a field - where poppies grow. We Will Remember Them

Walking to Gallipoli, continued from Page 10. It's now history that the landing took place in the wrong spot the small boats could not get into the shore causing great hardship for the Aussies. The boys had to jump into the water carrying their rifles and rounds of ammunition. They
immediately came under fire from the Turks in the trenches who were armed with machine guns as they manoeuvred their way through the sea and up the rocky and scrub covered terrain. Many did not make it to the shore. The sheer guts, determination and the mateship that resulted from their
experiences at Anzac cove made the world take note; they were a force to be reckoned with. It was then I realised that the next generation were not going to forget the sacrifices that these young colonial boys made on 25th April 1915 so that I, and the future generations, could live in a free and democratic society.

GREEN THUMBS NURSERY
Supporting your community car
Shorter & slightly cooler days of autumn are very welcome and encouraging us to tackle some of the tasks neglected over summer. Most importantly we are attacking the accumulation of plants and materials that have recently come our way via generous donations. In order to accommodate recently propagated and re-potted plants some current stock will be replaced by other species. This month, in addition to our regular offerings that include natives and succulents we have cyclamen ready to flower, wide variety of begonias and established ferns available. We are disposing of all our current stock of cannas. If not sold they will be available bare rooted at the April market. Our ever popular named variety of daylilies usually $5 each, are currently on special at 5 for $ 20. To assist your selection photos of these may be viewed at the nursery. Green Tips – instead of using commercial rooting compounds for propagating we dip most of our cuttings, including natives in honey with very good results. When starting succulent and begonia cuttings we don’t use any. Why not call in and see the extensive range of plants. Nursery is open Mondays and Wednesdays 10am -1pm. By Carol Ohlin.

OUR COMMUNITY
Rushworth and District Community Bank are proud to announce the sponsorship of $40,000 to the Gargarro Botanical Garden Project. We are excited to be developing such a relationship with Girgarre, continuing the support we have previously shown to the Moosic Muster, Tertiary and Primary School Scholarships as well as supporting local sporting groups. As a volunteer Board who run the Community Bank company, we have passion and drive to ensure such basic infrastructure as a Bank to provide banking services to our townships. We applaud Girgarre for the tenacity and passion you have to reach such great achievements and develop outstanding facilities for the future generations. The Gargarro Botanical Garden will truly be a community asset for generations to come. We know the impact of big business pulling out of our towns with very little regard for the wellbeing of our communities and are very proud to continue to invest in Girgarre and support the community to continue to thrive and grow. Of course, continued financial investment can only happen if we continue to gain support from the Girgarre community. Please be diligent when you think banking, insurance, superannuation, financial planning and Rural Bank agribusiness and contact or call in to our Branch in High Street Rushworth, or the Customer Service Centre in Stanhope to discuss your needs and see if the staff can help you. The more business we gain, the more our communities benefit and ensures that we can continue to invest in Girgarre. Your banking will help your community and when we work together, we can achieve fantastic outcomes. Members of our Board and Staff will be celebrating the opening of the SoundShell on 14th April, sharing the excitement and achievements of the Girgarre community. The group meets every 1st and 3rd (and 5th) Wednesday afternoon at 1.30pm in the Activities Room at the Girgarre Community Cottage. The group is appropriate for both new and experienced players of the ukulele and we would love to include you in their next get together. Phone Lyn for more information on 5859 0297
Zoos are calling on you to recycle your old mobile phone, routers, ADSL modems and cables to help save one of our closest living relatives. A rare mineral ore called coltan, found in many mobile phones and other items, is mined in gorilla habitat. The mining is accelerating the decline in gorilla numbers and at least 10 other African primate species. By simply recycling an old mobile phone, the pressure on gorilla habitat is reduced and money raised from refurbished mobile phones supports conservation projects in Africa.

settlers history in February was a lovely event, well organised and attended by visitors and many locals. President Laurie Young and Girgarre RSL members wish to acknowledge the significant contribution from the Girgarre community and other non-local community minded people, for the assistance they provided at the unveiling of the dedication wall commemorating “Closer and World War 1 Soldier Settlers” of Girgarre District on Sunday 25 February. Without the voluntary assistance provided, the wonderful unveiling spectacle and tremendous afternoon tea that followed would have not made for such a successful event. Girgarre RSL thank you.

SPORT The 2018 Football & Netball season has come around quickly. Both sides of the club have been working hard in the off season to build on the improvement from the 2017 season. Shannon Tucker and his team has worked hard on retaining the majority of the playing group from 2017 plus adding more depth and on the netball Erin has worked tireless in appointing three new senior coaches & retaining Sheree Starling for our juniors. On the football side, Shannon has be re-appointed as the Senior coaches for 2018 after an impressive debut season with Girgarre last year. The improvement on and off the field has earnt him this appointment & something not
Girgarre Cricket Club’s
only the players are looking forward to but also the members and spectators. Brendan Baumann is once again our reserves coach after finishing in the top 6 & the team playing Stanhope in the 1st Elimination final last year. Brad Canny is our thirds coach for 2018 after a trying year in 2017. Recruiting has been a major focus for the off-season & the club would like to welcome the following players and their families to Girgarre Football Netball Club: Mick Marret; Matt Giorgianni; Phil Hazelman; Rowan Priest; Nathan Terry; Damien Dalziel; Tom Powels; Joel Bunce. The following have been appointed by their team as captains, vice
captains & leadership group for 2018: Seniors Captain: Luke Whykes. Seniors Vice Captain: Jake Hyland & Ryan Jones. Leadership Group: Rowan Priest & Ash Kirchhofer. Reserves Captain: Chris Potter. Reserves Vice Captain: Chris Milnes. Reserves Deputy Vice Captain: David O’Brien & Jaiden Shenfield. Update on the happenings for the football; Trainings are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm. One more practice match for the boys, 24th March 2018 at Girgarre against Katunga.
2017/2018 season began
with the hope of reaching our 3rd grand final in a row in B grade and our second in C grade. After struggling for numbers early in the season, unfortunately we had to drop our D grade side from the competition. C grade was our best performed side only missing out on finals by percentage. The highlight for the year was a partnership of 214 between C grade captain Scott Fitzallen with 93 and Lachie George with 102 runs; his maiden century. We had a very financially rewarding $2000 draw and ferret races day which was well attended. Also on that day, we inducted David (Ducky) Asquith as our newest Life Member. To wind up the season the clubs presentation day was held at Ky West hotel one of our loyal sponsors. B grade player of the year was Andrew Medhurst and C grade was Scott Fitzallen. Any locals wanting a game of cricket next season are encouraged to contact the club via the mycricket website or just come and introduce yourself at Thursday evening training.
