THE IRON ROUTe
he iron industry has enjoyed a long tradition in Gipuzkoa as evidenced by the wealth of industrial heritage which lives on today. The aim of the Iron Route, which goes through Andorra, Catalonia, Languedoc-Rousillon, Aquitaine and the Basque Country, is to highlight the cultural importance of the iron-making industry, once one of the main pillars of the region’s economy. Although the inhabitants of the regions surrounding the Pyrenees had already been exploiting the area’s natural mineral deposits for thousands of years, it was the iron-mak-
ing industry which developed during the Industrial Revolution that left a deep imprint on the rural and urban fabric of the area. The mines, charcoal kilns, ironworks, and workers’ and master ironworkers’ dwellings along the Iron Route bear witness to this unique cultural heritage and allow visitors to explore the region’s past. Notable examples in Gipuzkoa are the Agorregi and Mirandaola ironworks, the Basque Iron Museum, Zerain Cultural Park, the Ormaiztegi viaduct, the Mutiloa Mining Complex, the Arditurri mines, the Elgoibar Machine Tool Museum and the Eibar Arms Industry Museum. Apart from the rich industrial heritage, the area boasts outstanding scenery, interesting works by contemporary artists, and towns which grew up around the iron industry. A combination of art, history, and nature guaranteed to offer visitors a unique tourist experience.
