During the late 1960s and ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, thinking it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter. Rust Be Gone By Tresa Erickson

As a vehicle owner, you have probably dealt with rust at some point. No matter how well you take care of your vehicle, rust spots may appear, and the longer you own your vehicle, the more likely you are to encounter it. Fortunately, there are ways to deal with rust and help prevent it. To protect vehicles from rust, manufacturers apply a variety of protective coatings, including lacquers and resistant paints. The thicker the coatings, the better chance the vehicle will not rust. However, common nicks, scratches and dents will penetrate coatings and expose the surface to corrosive elements, like water, dirt and salt. Over time, the surface will develop rust. If left untreated, the rust may eat through the surface, leaving unsightly holes. The most common areas where rust occurs include doors, bumpers, chrome-plated trim, hinges and brackets, and any other places prone to nicks, scratches and dents. There are several measures you can take to protect your vehicle. First, cover paint nicks quickly. If you don't have any touchup paint on hand, use some clear nail polish to seal the area. Then get to an auto supply store for some touchup paint. For the exact color of your vehicle, check the identification plate for the paint code number. If you don't know where the identification plate is, consult your owner's manual. Keep in mind that unusual paint colors may have to be ordered. Next, mend any scratches you see. Pick up a scratch repair kit at an auto supply store and follow the instructions. Finally, repair any dents that occur. Unless you're an auto body specialist, you probably won't be able to fix the dents yourself. Ask around and find a service specializing in paintless dent repair. Preventive care is key in deterring rust. Avoid parking your vehicle outside for long periods of time. Elements, like the sun and rain, are hard on a vehicle's surface. Wash and wax your vehicle often. Make sure you use a cleaner and a wax that is appropriate for your vehicle's finish. If you live in an area with harsh winters, consider having your vehicle, especially the undersurface, professionally undercoated. Rust can make any car look old. Fortunately, keeping it at bay isn't difficult. With some maintenance and preventative care, you can keep your car free of rust and looking like new for a long time.

March is National Nutrition Awareness Month

March 14-20, 2019

‘You are what you eat’, said someone wise, a while back. The phrase holds more importance than ever in our modern times of rushed meals and fast-food diets. National Nutrition Month, celebrated in March, is the perfect excuse to be more mindful of what you eat. An initiative of American Dietetic Association, first celebrated in 1973, National Nutrition Month is meant to make Americans more aware of what they eat.

National Kick Butts Day – March 20, 2019

Get ready to kick some butts this March 20! We’re not talking about beating people up — we want you to kick those cigarette butts to the curb. National Kick Butts Day is a day of anti-smoking activism. Teachers, kids, youth leaders, and health advocates all participate! They come together and organize events that raise awareness of the problem of tobacco use in their communities, encourage kids to stay tobacco-free, and try to get anti-tobacco legislation passed. The day is organized by The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and it was first held in 1996. Get ready to kick some butts and take some names!

Workout Supplements Are Sum of Their Parts DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, in his mid-20s, uses a preworkout energy supplement to which I am opposed. Can you tell me if this is harmful so that I can show him scientific research and your educated and medically sound response? The supplement he uses contains alanine 1 g, creatine 1 g, arginine 1 g, tyrosine and velvet bean seed extract. It also contains 150 mg caffeine. -- B.G. ANSWER: It’s not always easy to tell what supplements are safe or effective for the condition they are marketed for, and the information available through a web search often is biased. One place I start to get information is Medline Plus ( medlineplus/), which has reliable information about many supplements, but you often have to search individually. In this case, alanine, arginine and tyrosine all are amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins, and are safe in reasonable amounts. Cre-

atine is generally safe for adults, and has been shown modestly effective at helping improve strength in young male weightlifters. One gram is a fairly low dose and is generally considered safe. The 150 mg of caffeine is about the same as a cup of strong coffee. Velvet bean seed extract I had to look up. It has been used both as a food crop and in traditional medicines. It has toxicity at high doses, but at the dose in the supplement, it should be safe. In summary, I think this supplement is not likely to be harmful if taken in recommended doses, and it might have some small benefit. There is nothing in the supplement that cannot be obtained easily and cheaply from food, apart from the velvet bean, which I think has the least proof of benefit of all the components of the supplement. ••• DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 49 years old and in good health. I recently was told by my doctor that what was first diagnosed as a swollen lymph is actually a condition called carotidynia. Can you please publish some information about this condition and what I can expect? Sometimes it is worse than at other times, but it never really goes away. I would not consider it painful; it is just uncomfortable, and when severe, it radiates up into my ear and down into my chest. -- S.W. ANSWER: Carotidynia (literally, “pain in the carotid artery”) can come from several distinct causes, some of which are catastrophic, such as a carotid artery dissection, which is a tearing of the lin-

ing of the artery. In some cases, carotidynia may be a form of migraine. After surgery or angioplasty to the carotid artery, one also can get pain that comes from the carotid itself. In the case of no other cause being identified, the condition is sometimes called idiopathic (which simply means “of unknown cause”) carotidynia, and some, but not all, experts think this condition comes from a type of inflammation around the artery, which can sometimes be seen on CT or MRI scan. Idiopathic carotidynia is usually treated with antiinflammatory medicines -- ibuprofen, or prednisone in more severe cases. Most cases respond quickly, in a few days or up to a few weeks. However, I want to emphasize the need to thoroughly search for other concerning causes of neck pain. ••• Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. How to Observe National Nutrition Month

Volunteer at nutrition awareness events Local events, like food drives, are organized across neighborhoods and schools in the US. Check for events in your area and volunteer for the ones you can.

Donate food A healthier nation also includes the less-privileged citizens of the country. If you can't find time to volunteer, donate food at food camps or centers that accept donation. Make a meal plan If you have been struggling to curb your eating habits, National Nutrition Month is the perfect month to put it down in writing. Make a meal plan and make sure it's balanced; include healthy carbs, proteins, and fiber. And keep some room for cheat days, too!

Irish Leprechaun Nodder Bobble heads are popular today as sports collectibles. Most baseball teams offer souvenir bobble-head dolls at some of the games during the season, but today’s dolls are made of slick plastic and usually are wearing fabric uniforms. Early toy bobble heads were made of painted papier-mache. The head bobs up and down because it is attached to a long-weighted neck that’s suspended in the neck’s hole. It is balanced on a narrow metal rod that swings back and forth, making the head move. The idea came from 18th-century porcelain figurines that had moving heads and hands. The major German porcelain factories made complicated nodders. One was a group of four women drinking tea while their heads and hands moved. Another was a 20th-century figure of a woman seated in front of a typewriter. Her hands moved up and down as she typed.

This bobble-head figure in a lime-green suit and hat is a 5-inch-tall, smiling Irish Leprechaun nodder. It was made in Germany of a composition material; his glass eye is winking. He’s a charming fellow, but St. Patrick’s Day collectibles are not as popular as those for Halloween or Christmas, and there were fewer bids. The buyer paid only $59. ••• Q: Is it true that furniture from the U.S. House of Representatives is sometimes sold at auction? Who owns the chair used by each elected official? A: For many years, there were few rules about the furniture that belonged to the government in the Congressional buildings, the White House or other Federal buildings. It is said that President Lincoln’s wife sold some of the furnishings because she needed money to live on, as there was no pension for the wife of a president. Now there are pages of instructions about buying and selling official furnishings. Most pieces have to be paid for by the elected official according to a written schedule. We have seen several Victorian chairs from the House of Representatives sold. They were made in 1857 by a famous New York firm, Bembe & Kimbel. They featured three stars

Cheddar Cheese Biscuits for St. Patrick’s Day Whenever I run into my Irish-American friend Margaret Wachholz, I feel like I’ve just won a ticket to the Emerald Isle. It’s not just her catchy sayings and accent that inspire me; she simply exudes joy whenever I tell her about my attempts to be just a wee bit Irish, especially around St. Patrick’s Day. When I recently shared a favorite biscuit recipe made with cheddar cheese and scallions, which I thought might be ideal for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner, she exclaimed, “’Tis, indeed, but be sure to add lashings of butter! Irish butter.” Good thing, because this recipe calls for butter in the batter and for brushing on top of the warm biscuits -- perfectly suited to accompany an Irish-themed meal on March 17, This easy recipe skips mixers, kneading and biscuit cutters in the prep. Just set out a big bowl, grab a wooden spoon and call in the kids. They can measure and stir before you pop the doughy mounds in the oven. When baked, they can brush the lightly browned tops with “lashings” of butter and top with a shamrockshaped flat parsley leaf as a nod to the “green.” CHEDDAR CHEESE AND SCALLION BISCUITS (Makes 16 medium biscuits) 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup whole milk 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsalted melted butter (resources below) 2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese (look for Irish cheddar for St. Patrick’s Day) 2 teaspoons scallions, chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped 16 whole leaves from flat leaf parsley, for garnish (optional)

Page 9

To prepare oven and baking pan: Heat oven to 450 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. To prepare dough: In a large mixing bowl, let your kids measure and combine flour, baking powder, garlic powder, sugar and salt. Stir with a big spoon. Add milk and 1/2 cup of the melted butter, and combine lightly until flour is mixed in. (Do not overstir!) It will be sticky. Fold in the cheese, scallions and chopped parsley. To bake: Use an ice-cream scoop or large spoon to drop equal-size mounds on the baking sheet. Bake 12-14 minutes, until lightly browned. To serve: Remove from oven. Brush each biscuit with remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter and press a parsley leaf shaped like a shamrock on top. Resources: Kerrygold brand pure Irish butter is widely available. ••• Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
