ecause of the advancement of the internet, there has been an advancement in the industrial control systems (ICS) as well. There are plenty of improvements in the connectivity and efficiency of the system that makes their service more satisfactory to the consumers. While the ICS is improving, there is one very significant factor that the organization may have overlooked. It’s their cybersecurity measures. Although the system may have significantly changed over the past few decades, it didn’t manage to upgrade to better security facilities and infrastructures, making the overall structure vulnerability to malicious attacks from hackers and viruses. The technical ability of hackers has increased in the passing years, and while most incidents had only mild attacks, it is still considered a vulnerability to the system. Cybersecurity should always be an essential issue to deal with in any company. The frequent attacks include data breaches and stolen information, which is already a catastrophe in itself. But when hackers start messing with more technical stuff such as altering codes and machine processes in the company, then it becomes more than a catastrophe per 4

Online Security in Power & Water se. The power and water industry has been quite vulnerable to these attacks as they had been left out of the cybersecurity trend. They are too concerned with downtimes and not servicing their customers properly that they opt out of upgrades and improvements, making their securities too outdated for hackers and viruses. Cyber-attacks are now becoming an impactful problem in the digital world, and while there is a multitude of easy ways to counterattack these vulnerabilities, some companies are not just too aware of the possible consequences outdated systems bring to their workforce and overall processes.

Companies should always maintain their systems and ensure that dedicated IT experts and security staff are always available to look out for possible breaches and malware.

The industrial control systems (ICS), the systems responsible for managing industrial automation such as water treatment plants, power plants, wastewater plants, and even oil and gas plants, has greatly evolved over the course of the decade thanks to the advancement of the internet and its wireless capabilities. Although this has led to higher efficiency and speed, it also became more vulnerable to unwanted attacks from hackers and viruses. According to one of the top security firms 8

across the globe, Positive Technologies, their researchers could gain access to 73% of industrial organizations, eventually gaining a hold of ICS equipment to play around with. Smart hackers have taken advantage of this fact and used this vulnerability to access and penetrate insecure systems. Some of these notable hacks involving the power and water industry are mentioned below.

Hacking Incidents over the Years

Hacking of an Electric Company Not long ago, a hacker tapped into the telephone-based outage reporting system of the Ozarks Electric Cooperative and changed the voice greeting to “All of Ozarks Electric’s employees have gone home. Call someone who cares. Although considered as a minor incident, this historical telephone hacking became a 10

wakeup call for the organization to reinforce its security and review their guidelines. If the hacker can penetrate their telephone system, then it was possible to do more than that. The company then worked on integrating a two-tiered password security into their operations.

Infiltrating Nuclear Plant Network A plant personnel at Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in Ohio firmly believed their network was safe as it has a firewall. But when a Slammer worm got into their systems and disabled a safety monitoring system for about five hours, the company was forced to maintain and improve their malware detection measures and install intrusion detection sensors in their critical system networks. The main reason behind this vulnerability was that the staff at the plant wasn’t able to install patches for their server to counterattack the Slammer worm. They weren’t aware of any patches even though the patch has been out for about six months.

Stealing Information from the National Nuclear Security Administration Nearly 1,500 personal information was taken from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) when someone hacked their system in September 2005. The data belongs to employees and contractors and included their name, Social security number, birth date, and more. Although the incident was discovered at that time, higher officials were only informed in June 2006.

hackers. Most manufacturers and companies are not too eager to make any changes to their system as they are worried it might cause unnecessary downtime that their customers would not take so lightly. This then led to outdated systems which were not able to keep up with the technological trend, making them too easy a target for the malicious hackers. Deloitte and the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation once reported that about one-third of manufacturers do not even conduct cyber risk assessments, making their systems fail in no time.

Verizon Security Systems reported a data breach in the control system of a huge water utility service with millions of consumers back in 2016. The hackers were able to alter the computers managing the water chemicals of the plant that makes water safe to drink. The investigators found out that the cause of the breach was quite common among these services — outdated 18

cybersecurity protocols. Eddie Habibi, CEO of PAS, a Houston-based ICS security firm, emphasized how control systems can create havoc in the infrastructure of the company. Such incidents could have been prevented if the organizations were not afraid to upgrade their system to counterattack these high-tech

What makes the situation worst is when the industrial systems are connected to office systems and computers, allowing hackers to penetrate not only the office processes but also the technical processes. This compromises the system altogether and makes information messed up, eventually leading to a complete stop of operation. Experts suggest isolating the office system from the machinery. Human errors also account for some of the vulnerabilities in the system, which is why continuous maintenance and improvement is always a must in the plant.

Global water market to reach $915 billion by 2023 The 2018 - 2023 global water market forecasts, published as part of a major update to GWI WaterData – GWI’s online market intelligence platform – featured: Updated 2018- 2023 outlooks for the water markets of 100 different countries.Water spending forecasts and analysis for utilities, technology markets, and a range of industrial sectors, including upstream oil & gas, mining, refining & petrochemicals and the microelectronics industry. Expanded coverage and analysis of the digital water solutions market.

The global water market is projected to reach a total value of $914.9 billion in 2023, according to the latest 2018-2023 forecasts published by Global Water Intelligence (GWI). GWI’s market research linked this growth to a recovering global economy, high commodity and oil prices, and major water quality and infrastructure plans such as those in Saudi Arabia, China and Southeast Asia aimed at improving wastewater treatment and incentivising private finance in water. The 26

forecasts are available to GWI WaterData subscribers and were published as part of a major update to the WaterData platform. New forecasts published by GWI have projected that the value of the global water market, representing the sum of both operating and capital expenditures by utilities and industrial water users on water and wastewater, is expected to grow from $770 billion in 2018 to $914.9 billion by 2023.

Christopher Gasson, Publisher at GWI commented that “The global water market is growing at a faster rate than at any time since 2010, driven by a buoyant global economy and a recovery in the oil price. That said, the rate of investment is still well below what is needed to maintain existing infrastructure and keep up with the demands of urbanisation, environmental protection and climate change.” GWI’s team of research analysts found that the projected increase in global capital expenditure on water and wastewater is being fuelled by a return to growth

management and treatment requirements. GWI found that the average number of water barrels used per frack in the Permian Basin increased 434% between 2013 – 2016. The North American fracking boom is also creating a new market for “midstream” water management infrastructure where water is piped, managed and treated at plants in closer proximity to the fields, in order to more easily meet the water needs of the fracking industry. Similarly, GWI’s analysts forecast that global capital expenditure on water and wastewater by the mining industry will increase by 23.5% to $1.64 billion by 2019, mirroring a sustained increase in the price of commodities such as copper, nickel, cobalt, and chromium worldwide, fuelling the expansion of mining operations as well as new projects.

for key industry sectors such as mining, upstream oil & gas, and microelectronics. Commodity and oil prices experienced a rebound in 2017 off the back of successfully implemented OPEC production cuts and a growing global demand for commodities such as copper, lithium and nickel as a result of increased demand for batteries and electric vehicles. GWI’s analysts have forecast increases in spending on water and wastewater treatment systems, particular-

ly in the oil & gas and mining sectors, over the next five years. The market for oil-water separation technologies for instance, is forecast to grow by 14.6% bringing new opportunities for technology suppliers and specialists in water management and treatment. Rising oil prices are facilitating a boom in the North American fracking industry, and the renewed exploitation of mature fields like the Permian Basin which increasingly have high water

The new forecast updates suggest the growth of the mining industry, coupled with increasing competition for water resources between municipalities and industries in regions threatened with water scarcity, will create new opportunities for seawater desalination and water reuse projects, as the world’s mining hubs act to secure their water needs. Chile for example, is set to become a key source of desalination project opportunities. A 128.5% increase in the use of seawater in the country’s mining operations is expected over

the next ten years, driven by continued investments in new mining projects, and the impact of a new regulation which makes desalination mandatory for mining operations with water needs exceeding 12,960m3/d.

28

GWI’s market analysis also found the introduction of more stringent water and wastewater quality regulations will have a significant impact on the dynamics and growth prospects of several key water markets over the next five years, especially in China and India.

in stricter enforcement, and a clear uptick in project flow for wastewater treatment projects. In China, drives to tackle flooding and stormwater pollution under the ‘sponge city’ programme and to centralise and standardise industrial park wastewater treatment are coinciding, creating a diverse range of technology opportunities. India meanwhile is seeing a breakthrough in the adoption of reuse technologies, due to government directives demanding the use of treated sewage effluent in the power industry.

Increased regulatory powers of relevant agencies in both countries has resulted

GWI also expects a major uptick in reuse projects to occur in China, as the central

government tightens water pollution regulations for both utilities and industry. The 13th Five-Year Plan calls for 90% of municipal sludge to be treated to new, tougher environmental standards by 2020, creating new opportunities for projects and technologies focused on sludge management in one of the world’s largest water markets. Additionally, the forecast updates suggest that the international water market is experiencing the strongest pro-privatisation wave in two decades, following on from the major national water privatisation programme announced in Saudi Arabia in 2018.

GWI’s analysts highlighted the expansion of private finance models for water in Southeast Asia as a key part of this pro-privatisation trend. The string of IPOs carried out by Vietnam’s utilities to raise the capital to expand wastewater treatment networks, the use of private finance for water beyond Metro Manila in the Philippines, and Indonesia’s progressing national PPP plans all look to provide opportunities for international investors and companies working in wastewater.

Why Elite Families in the Philippines Choose TOSOT U-Crown Split Type Aircon These elite families deserve nothing but the best, and this TOSOT split-type aircon is nothing short of perfect.

Of course, these luxurious home décors fit perfectly in the traditional pre-Colonial mansions and have been well-thought-of even for the smallest trinkets that are made of either silver or gold. Some elite men even house cars as many as a hundred in their well-maintained garages. And not to mention how grand parties are in these posh “little” mansions. Anyone who’s anyone is definitely on the guest list!

C

razy Rich Asians, a 2018 film showcasing the luxe life (and love life) of crazy rich Asian people, particularly some Chinese families. Apparently, there is quite a handful of real-life “crazy rich” families in the Philippines as well. Despite its being a third-world country, one can never doubt the fact that it is home to dozens of known names in the society that are living the high life. Prominent names such as the Marcoses, Ayalas, Lopezes, Roxases, Tecsons, Tuasons, Yuchengcos, and Tans among others have graced the streets of Manila since the 1800s. They were definitely

50

the ‘it’ crowd and the epitome of elegance and luxury spending. From traveling abroad monthly to spending an easy 10 million for a child’s birthday party, these Filipino elites sure know how to celebrate their financial success. They need not boast of their hefty wealth since it is always evident in their myriad of extravagant properties, especially their homes, which are in fact taken care of by at least a dozen pack of househelps. Many of these homes were adorned with exquisite wood furniture (made exclusively by famous craftsmen) and a few fabulous classic paintings by the likes of Amorsolo and Hidalgo.

As expected, a very chic home deserves an equally premium air-conditioning unit materialized by TOSOT in their U-Crown Split Type Aircon. This wall mounted aircon is a combination of elegance with a hint of modern and innovative technology, perfect for luxurious ancestral houses and modern homes. Here are a few other reasons why Philippine elite families choose TOSOT U-Crown Split Type Aircon.

Unique Style and Design While many other split type aircon in the Philippines have the average-looking designs, TOSOT U-Crown wall mounted aircon is a definite stand out. Its slim U-shape integrated IDU design complements an equally elegant building interior and acts more of an aesthetic than a cooling unit. Another plus in its design is the 18dBA low noise which is practically negligible in

a mansion as big the elite families have. Thanks to this neat feature, this aircon can be installed in noise-sensitive areas such as the bedroom or library. Besides those mentioned features, TOSOT U-Crown Premium Series is also built with a wide air outlet with waterfall cooling, suitable for enjoying a relaxing lazy day during the summer.

R410A Eco-Friendly Refrigerant Modern air-conditioning units have already adopted the use of eco-friendly refrigerants in their models, and TOSOT is among those who have taken the earth-friendly route in aircon manufacturing. TOSOT U-Crown Premium Series is not an exception in this route as it features a very eco-friendly refrigerant called R410A. Homeowners can now cool themselves all day long all while preserving the beloved environment with this low-impact wall mount aircon.

Powerful Performance Fabricated with a full DC inverter that lengthens the life of the unit and lessens the total energy cost, TOSOT U-Crown Premium Series aircon is packed with powerful performance. Its two-stage compressor that operates from -30 to 54 degrees provides a more flexible option to the users. They can easily switch from freezing cold to burning hot in a matter of seconds, all with a push of a remote button. Its capacity outputs up to 18,000 BTU per hour and can cool large function rooms up to about 1000 square feet. It also features four different kinds of sleeping modes, adding to the user’s degree of freedom. 52

Maximum Efficiency Although elite families can obviously spend thousands of pesos for their electricity bills, a couple hundred pesos in savings can still do them good. With the aircon’s 1Hz Inverter technology that adds to the unit’s energy efficiency, even elite families can enjoy paying less for more. Its minimum input power is 15W to 0.2W standby power that will greatly save on energy consumption for the whole house. Pairing this with a full DC inverter and an eco-friendly

refrigerant, higher machine efficiency is a definite guarantee. To find out the best split type air conditioner for your condos, mansions or yachts, visit TOSOT showroom located at 2162 FB Harrison St., San Jose, Pasay City, Philippines or call +632-8330000 to book an appointment. Asphalt Maintenance Tips From a Colorado Springs Company

Tips on how to care for and maintain asphalt surfaces to ensure their longevity Asphalt has the durability to take on years of vehicle and foot traffic without any visible signs of damage. However, all asphalt surfaces must be repaved when its materials break down or suffer wear and tear. There’s no need to worry, however, as this article will give you tips on how to care for and maintain asphalt surfaces to ensure their longevity. 60

Seal Your Asphalt Sealing your asphalt driveways in the dry summer season will help increase its longevity. It is best to apply asphalt sealant at least once every two years to renew its protective layer and have it looking fresh again. According to an asphalt Colorado Springs company, sealants help maintain the durability and strength of the asphalt’s foundation, making it last longer for years to come.

Repair Cracks Regular preemptive inspections are vital in keeping your asphalt driveway in tip-top shape. Make sure to repair cracks ahead of time, before any extreme weather conditions begin. Although small cracks in your pavement may seem harmless, it can rapidly expand and cause serious issues when exposed to harsh elements and regular use. Water percolation can cause cracks to erode and weaken the substrate below its surface, which can also lead to crocodile cracking. Spotting cracks and repairing them at first sight can help you avoid expensive repair jobs in the future. It can also be in your best interest to hire a reliable concrete repair Colorado Springs company to inspect and repair damages on your asphalt driveway.

Shovel The Snow Removing snow from your driveway is an essential part of maintenance. As the snow builds up, it can lead to hazardous conditions when driving in or out of your property. For example, a snow-covered driveway or parking lot can be slippery for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Regularly removing snow can help the asphalt retain its integrity and help reduce the likelihood of incidents from happening on your property.

Clean It Up

Use Potassium Chloride

Closing Thoughts

A simple step such as cleaning and removing debris on your driveway can go a long way when it comes to asphalt damage prevention. You should regularly remove dirt, leaves, debris, and standing water from your driveway and parking lot. Although it’s best to keep your driveway clean at all times, this can be particularly important before winter begins, as snow can freeze and stick debris to the asphalt surface. Frozen debris on your driveway can be potentially harmful for you, your family, and to the asphalt surface.

Rock salt can be effective in neutralizing slippery conditions on asphalt surfaces; however, it can also harm the asphalt pavement. Rock salts are highly corrosive and can cause premature external damages on your asphalt driveway and parking lot. Avoid using rock salt as a deicing agent and use less-damaging alternatives, such as potassium chloride.

Proper maintenance can go a long way in ensuring the longevity of your asphalt pavement. Although these tips can be easy enough to do yourself, it can still be a daunting task. Save yourself from unnecessary trouble and look for a reliable and professional asphalt company.
