St. Lawrence University hello realtor University Master of real estate students in this video in the series realtor University Live tips a series will represent common student research scenarios and provide quick and easy solutions we will cover how to begin a literature review search for the re 600 capstone course project in this course students need to conduct a literature review which requires an in-depth coverage of the scholarly literature on the students topic of choice this can not only be daunting at the onset but once digging into the research the body of literature needed to review can grow exponentially the textbooks in this course offer excellent guidance on how to conduct a literature review and include practical advice on how to organize and record research findings we encourage you to begin reading these books early in the course or ideally you would begin reading them prior to the course so you understand all of the different project types and have a good idea as to which project your study would be and then you have a good idea how to go about your study before the course starts one idea these tools provide is to create a literature index now there are tools out there software tools that can help you with your literature review and creating a literature index tools like endnote and refworks come to mind but there are many others for the purposes of this session today we're gonna use Microsoft Word since it's quick and easy and most people have it on their computer already one tip that we provide here at the Ru library is in order to save yourself stress at a later time make sure to get all the citations for the articles you find formatted in APA 6th format as you discover literature to use in your project it's really frustrating and kind of a painful process to pull together and copy and paste a little bit of information about the articles and then the last week of class having to scramble to try and pull everything together into APA format you're putting it in that format as you go it will be a lot easier in a much more streamlined process for you the books for this course also have a couple great suggestions one is to record searches and search processes that you conducted with each research session as it will make it easier to reproduce your process at a later time often times in my research process I found that I I saw an article and I didn't think it was relevant so I ignored it and then I continued to search read other articles and so forth finish that research session and then the next day realized you know that one article that I ignored that actually would be relevant to my research paper or process and now I can't remember how to get that information so if as you're searching you're creating a log of this is what I did these are the searches I ran these are the articles I found it'll be much more easier to recreate your steps in case you ever need to and you'd be surprised often that happens because it's hard when you're starting your research to know what is gonna be useful and what isn't and what direction you're gonna go and you never know you might decide that oh research in this Avenue is actually relevant to what I'm doing and would be a great addition to my paper just keep that in mind a second suggestion the books offer is when you read an article to take notes on key findings and research outcomes of a given study you have the citation in APA six format and then you have a quick line in your own words of this is what the study was about and these are their key finding and then you can also copy and paste quotes from that article and denote the page number of where you found that quote because you never know you may want to incorporate a couple quotes into your paper and then you've already got what you think are the relevant items for your research in other videos in this R you live tip series we cover the basics of how to start a research project and use the ProQuest database we will pick up where those videos left off at the point where you have already identified search keywords run a search on ProQuest and are looking at an article here's an article that I found for my thesis and one thing that you'll find when you read a lot of studies is that they actually conduct literature reviews themselves and they will cite other relevant research within their research and sometimes that research might sound interesting or like something you would need or want to read as it might contribute to your own thesis for this example there's a paper by Olsen and Olsen that is cited and in reading it it sounds like something that I would want to use in my thesis or I'd at least want to read a lot of times especially if you're relying heavily on a work it's a good idea to read the different literature that you that was used to influence support the work just gives you a broader context and understanding of their findings and their approach well we've got Olsen and Olsen and let's say I want to look up this article and see if the realtor University library has it either here in the ProQuest database or elsewhere the first thing we do is go to their references list and we go scroll down to Olsen and Olsen right here now I want to find this article this process that I'm showing you is called citation chasing basically you're looking at the citations of an article that you like and using that as a way to find more resources and I articles it's another way to research in previous videos in this lab tip series I've shown you how to use search words and thesaurus and search through journals individually but another way to find sources

is when you find an article that you like or that's really useful to use the citations in that article to find more relevant and useful articles and this is actually often a great way to expand your research and references and such so I'm going to copy and paste this into my notes for the day so you'll note that here I'm I've got my literature search log so I've got the the day that I conducted this research I have details about what I searched I have the citation and APA sixth here for this current article and then I'm gonna try and look up this one here quick tip if you are using ProQuest there is a APA six citing citation tool that you can use click on cite at the top of the article opens up this little dialog box it automatically puts it in six but you know just double check that it's in sixth and then you copy and then paste it in and then you've got your citation in APA six so that way if you cite this work it's much easier to just copy and paste the citation into your references list in your paper saves you some time now we're gonna go and look at Olsen and Olsen this is from human-computer interaction Journal I want to try and find that I'm going to go to publications I'm in a search for human computer in the title zero publications alright so let's try computer it's a pretty unique word aren't that many journals that have the word computer in the title see if we limit it that way so I'm scrolling through we've got computer dealer computer publishing no computer human or human computer since it's not here we have to think about another place to look for it one place that I often like to check his Google Scholar for Google Scholar you go to SCH Ola are google.com and here you can search articles that Google Scholar has indexed we're gonna look for Olsen and Olsen since Google's pretty great I'm just gonna copy and paste part of that citation into Google and see what comes up I wanted to use this example this is a very lucky instance where in fact Google Scholar does have it and it has the full-text this won't always happen but in instances where it does you can tell if google has the full-text because usually in this column over here at the right they will have a link to the PDF so if they don't have it you won't see that link and then usually you'll go to some journal website where you have to pay you know 50 or $75 for that article I have another idea on those types of articles that I'll share in a little bit but first let's focus on this so I click on the PDF opens it in PDF and then here it's fantastic I have this article in full text which is very very lucky find make sure when you're doing this to save your articles because you never know when you'll need to use them again and you also Google re-indexing things all the time things are taken on and off the web at anytime this article is accessible today I can't guarantee it'll be accessible tomorrow when you find something you like save it when in doubt safe another tool that Google Scholar has added recently which is fantastic is this cite tool so again as I mentioned when you're working through your research you want to get all the citations in APA format to save yourself some time and stress so Google Scholar also has that option I click on cite and it has three different main formats obviously for Realtor University we want to use APA format so I can copy and paste that into my document so that I actually have the citation now clearly this isn't yet in APA 6th edition format since it's an Arial 10-point fine you always want to double-check things when you get citations from from anywhere whether it be ProQuest Google Scholar or even if you use tools like endnote and refworks you just want to make sure that they are in the correct format I found that for example with ProQuest sometimes the way the journals are entered into the database the titles of the journal or the article are in all caps and so when I create this APA 6th edition format citation suddenly the titles on all caps which I know is not APA 6th edition format just always double-check make sure you have a general idea of what APA 6 should look like and scan the citations to make sure that they're good now another thing that I'll notice here is a good example the titles of the articles are in sentence case the first letter of the sentence is capitalized proper nouns are capitalized and the first word after a colon is capitalized so this is good however the title of the actual journal or book itself should be entitled case your interaction is lowercase it actually should be uppercase you just want to be able to double-check everything and make sure it looks good getting back to the instances where you don't find the journal in ProQuest and there is no full-text version available for free in Google Scholar that is a time when I recommend contacting the realtor University Library there's an opportunity or a chance that we might have the article in our print collection and we could scan it for you or even though we have a very limited budget we might be able to acquire the article for you if you need something for your ru 600 capstone project and you can't find it that is precisely the time when you'd want to contact the realtor University Library and see if we can't help you out another thing I want to mention I said earlier that you'll want to save articles download the PDFs save them to your computer when you can so they're easier to access you never know you might be referring back to them several times one to one mention that's free is Google Docs so I believe you have to have a gmail account or set up a gmail account to use Google Docs as you know creating a gmail account is free and if you have another cloud-based tool or document management tool that you use for work or for your own personal use and you are you have that in you're happy with it go ahead and use that I just mentioned Google Docs because it's free and it's a great tool for organizing your documents online or you can access them from any computer in any city so for example here's my folder for my project and I can upload my PDFs and download them to different computers I can access them at work I can

access them at home I can access them at a friend's house the library wherever I am very accessible here so it's just a great way to manage and crack your documents another thing is as you're working on your thesis paper can obviously store it here but I want to recommend that in addition to storing it on some sort of a document management system like this save backup copies print out your paper as frequently as possible typically I like to save trees but in the case of the thesis just if anything happens to your computer you just don't want to lose the hard work that you've put into it I know a guy when I was in college who had written his entire thesis that was probably a hundred or so pages and been working on it all senior year and then his computer crashed or for whatever reason it got deleted and he had never printed it out so he didn't have anything to go off of he had to completely rewrite his entire thesis I don't want that to happen to any of you print it out when you can store it and save it on multiple computers on multiple devices and then just make sure to have a clear versioning system so you know which is the most recent version or copy of your paper that concludes this video on the realtor University Lyde tips video series stay tuned for future videos in this series where we will cover a variety of research and writing topics of interest to realtor university students and of course please do not hesitate to contact us for research guidance ideas and much more we also have a Writing Center for help with papers and assignments Globe Institute of Technology, Manhattan.
