Chatham County Schools (CCS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 20th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, CCS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music programs, Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. The award follows last year’s recognition of Northwood’s individual music program with the SupportMusic Merit Award, also

TriM Music Honor Society
This is Matthew Hanson’s 7th year at NHS teaching choral music and guitar. He is a graduate of UNC-G where he received both his Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. Hanson is an active member of the National Association for Music Education as well as the American Choral Director’s Association. He serves as faculty advisor for the Tri-M Music Honor Society and music director/arranger for Northwood’s a cappella group, Pitch Please. His groups have performed at the NC State Legislature, at Carnegie Hall, and this past April at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. This is Kami Keesor’s 4th year teaching music/chorus at Margaret B. Pollard Middle School. Previously she taught music and chorus at North Chatham Elementary, and AIG at M.B. Pollard. Prior to her time in Chatham County, she taught in Warren County and Orange County Schools. She graduated Suma Cum Laude from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree and is a member of the NCMEA. She serves as general music teacher, director of the 6th–8th Grade Mustang Chorus, director of Pollard’s Spring Musical, and director of the all new “Aca-Pollard” Singers. This is Gina Harrison’s 13th year serving as accompanist for the NHS music department. She studied piano and art at UNC, graduating with a BFA in studio art. She has been a member of Duke Chapel Choir for 35 years and just completed her first year as accompanist for the Fearrington Village Voices. She is president of NHSAEF, a board member of Arts NC & Chatham Arts Guild, past president of Chatham Arts Council, and the 2017 recipient of the NCMEA Music Educator Advocate Award.
