Bicycle Motocross Facility

Berlin, Germany

Bicycle Motocross Facility

Extreme sport, extreme architecture. Bicycle motocross is all about speed and tricks. This facility, located on an island in Berlin, acts as not only a track for BMX riders, but the community as well, creating circulation through the island. The facility uses the structure of the existing building located on the site, as well, the Stunt Tower, South-West and South-East entrances uses portions of original building. My concept was to have the BMX program and public pathway interweaving, to make the sport closer to the public. I achieved this by using the track as a roof to the underground pedestrian pathway.

Berlin, Germany

There is an amateur track and professional track, they meet, seperate and overlap each other, creating a dynamic rooftop for the unground level program.

The underground level is a pathyway for both pedestrians and bikers travelling from one side of the island to the other. At points along this path the BMX tracks dip down, forming the cafe, resting areas and bike shop.

The Monster A uniquely shaped building on the site, this water pipe tower was transformed into the BMX Facilities Stunt Tower.

South-West Entrance This is where BMX fans can enter, the upper levels hold the bleachers, ticket booths, snack bar and bathrooms for BMX lovers.

South-East Entrance Cantilevered, this secton of the facility includes the Community & Athletes Gym and Start/Finish platform of the BMX tracks.

Ottawa’s Ripley’s Aquarium

Located in Ottawa along the Ottawa River, this is a perfect location for an Aquarium for Ottawa. The building cantilevers over the site, starting from the street, to preserve the green area near the river. The multiple aquariums inside act as a counterweight. The building envelope and structure were important for the project.

B7. Structural Systems

Structure was something I wanted to be very prominent and included in my design process. I started with a concrete cantilever having this cantilever would not hold up my building, so I added cables. I incorporated and used the cables to my advantage, in People would not only come to see the fish, but also to see the architecture.

cture was something I wanted to be very prominent and included in my design process. I started with a concrete cantilever, with reinforcing bars running through the length of it. After talking to a structural engineer, I was told just ng this cantilever would not hold up my building, so I added cables. I incorporated and used the cables to my advantage, in both aesthetics and also a creative way in separating spaces and circulating people though the building.

ple would not only come to see the fish, but also to see the architecture.

Curved steel I-beams used as the structural shell, holding both the facade and the floors. These beams enclose the steel cables and columns that hold up the cantilevered section of the Aquarium.

Having aquariums inside my building I have to be conscious of protecting the fish from prolonged sun exposure. Therefore I des will be explained further in the next section. Facade structure, also holds up floors

ing aquariums inside my building I have to be conscious of protecting the fish from prolonged sun exposure. Therefore I designed a type of faรงade that is continuous on the outside, but on the inside it changes between rooms. This be explained further in the next section.

Ottawa’s Ripley’s Aquarium

An interior view looking straight into the centre of the building. The cables and cantilever support posts create a dynamic open space for visitors to walk through. The facade is a fractal flame pattern, gererated randomly, and is reminicent of a school of fish in the ocean. The perforations allows for little light to go into the building, protecting the fish and displays of the Aquarium.

B6. Life Safety Systems, Building Code and Standards I was conscious that the fire exits of my building are very important, since the building would have constant people filtering through it. I placed two fire exits on either side of the building, each exiting on the Park Level.

Preston Bookstore

Ottawa, Canada

This project was to design a bookstore on a given site in the Little Italy neighbourhood of Ottawa. The existing brick house on this site was to be preserved. I removed two sides of the house, and replaced them with curves, creating a conversation between the orthogonal and the organic planes. The program includes a bookstore and performace space on the ground floor; public reading area and private residential area on the second floor; and a recording studio in the basement.

A physical model showing the acrylic curved facade, allowing natural light to enter the building. As well, the wooden dome, which acts as a seating area for reading room on the upperfloor, and an acoustic feature for the performance area on the first level.

Thorncrown Chapel

Thoncrown Chapel, Arkansas, was designed by architect Fay Jones, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. This projects A 1:20 scale technical model of this building was made with five group members. Over 1000 pieces comprised, of three different trusses, multiple joints and beams create an amazing array of shadows. Craftsmanship and teamwork were evident in this project.

Design Build: Group Project

The purpose of this project was to design a display case with a volume of 1m 続. We produced a kinetic interactive display, that can have three different static positions (open, closed to the left, and closed to the right) The unique part of the project is the joints, and how we made it possible for the case to spin. Material was sewn into nine wooden frames and the centre box included a string joint that allowed for flexible movement.
