WHAT’S GOING ON IN YOUR OFFICE? I want everybody to grab a pen and paper, walk toward your office and stop at the doorway. Take a minute here and look around. You spend so much time in your office that sometimes the clutter starts to blend into the walls and you become numb to it. At first glance, you see a cluttered desk, a bulletin board full of papers, cluttered bookshelves, and random piles on the floor. It’s chaos. Then you take a step into the office and stand over the desk. It’s cluttered with paper piles everywhere, random files scattered on the desk, chatzkies all over the desk and sticky notes stuck to the computer. Business cards are thrown all over the desk. A cup sits on the desk with above 20 writing instruments, half probably don’t work and most never get used. Inside the drawers, it’s chaos. You’re not utilizing drawer organizers and you try to find a binder clip and it takes you a few minutes to locate one. You haven’t purged your files in years, there is no system and the files aren’t even hanging in the drawers. It takes you 15 minutes to locate an important file. Now, you start to wonder if there is money in any form on the desk. You start to wonder if there are missed business opportunities in those piles. You think about how long it takes you to locate a file or important document. You start to sweat because now you’re thinking about all the time you’ve wasted due to your disorganization. You think about how much money you’ve lost and how many clients you may have lost due to your disorganization. How does this make you feel? If this overwhelms and stresses you out, you’re not alone. Before you even think about getting organized, you have to get past this feeling. People get stuck in all different areas of the organizing process. You may have trouble getting started or you get started but get stuck with the process of decluttering. You may make it through decluttering but then you get distracted and lose focus and after an hour, you’ve moved onto something else. Some make it through all of this but then get stuck when they begin the organizing process because they

10

Rhode Island Small Business Journal

don’t have the skill set. You may make it all the way through but the little things frustrate you and can’t figure out what to do with them. Then, there are the people who make it through the entire process, but just can’t seem to maintain their organization, which is one of the biggest steps in the process. One of the first things you need to do is recognize where you get stuck. Once you recognize that, you can move forward with a detailed plan. You can’t tackle a large project if you can organize a drawer. Start with your drawer. Take everything out of the drawer. Make your piles of keep, toss, and move to another area. Wipe out your drawer and take measurements of height, width, and length. Take a picture of what you’re keeping. Look at the empty drawer and think about how you want to function going forward. Think about functionality and how often you’re grabbing these items and how you want to organize them. Go to the store with your picture and measurements and purchase drawer organizers to match what you need to hold that will fit the space. In a nutshell, this is the process to get organized. The process is the same for everybody, but when you start creating systems, that’s where everybody functions differently. Everybody’s system will be different based on how they function. That’s where you really have to start asking questions about functionality. Don’t let the task of getting organized hold you back from functioning at your highest level. Don’t let this ruin you as a business owner. Make the time to evaluate how you’re functioning and put a plan into motion to get organized and become more efficient and productive.

Kristin MacRae Organizing and Efficiency Expert, organizinginri.com

THE PROCESS IS THE SAME FOR EVERYBODY, BUT WHEN YOU START CREATING SYSTEMS, THAT’S WHERE EVERYBODY FUNCTIONS DIFFERENTLY. EVERYBODY’S SYSTEM WILL BE DIFFERENT BASED ON HOW THEY FUNCTION.”

your hands. Instead hold the spine of the book cupped in your hand. Make sure a book has significant sentimental or monetary value before bringing it to a professional book binder. Once rebound, a book will look beautiful and will last for a very long time, but the cost of binding an average sized book can begin in the low hundreds, and increase exponentially with fine leather, and other high-quality materials that may be chosen (or needed) for the repair.

Kelly Allen-Kujawski established, owns, and operates Rarities Books and Bindery in North Kingston, Rhode Island. Kelly specializes in antique book and document repairs, as well as making journals, books, and other book type gifts. She also sells antique books, maps, and prints, and will be offering bookbinding classes to families and small groups of people later this year.

Kelly is a lifelong Rhode Islander, having been born and raised in Bristol and now residing in Western Coventry. She pursued her lifelong interest in reading as she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Florida Atlantic University. Her degree has been very helpful, as Kelly and her husband, Nate, raise and educate their son, Ethan (8 years old) and daughter, Nora (6 years old) as well as their dog and two cats. Her interest in books shifted from teaching to binding and restoration within the past few years, so she learned the art of bookbinding at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, Connecticut, and at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Massachusetts. She began work as a professional bookbinder, working out of her home in 2017 and established her studio in 2020. One of her favorite projects to date has been preparing beautiful preservation cases for minutes from Quaker Meetings from the early 1700s.

If you enjoy reading Kelly recommends:

Kelly shared these ideas to preserve your books: •

Never use any kind of tape on books or valuable documents. Instead leave the tear alone and bring it to a professional book binder for repair. Once tape goes on the document it can cause further damage and the cost of repair in the future increases dramatically. When removing books from a shelf, never pull from the top of the spine. Likewise, never flatten a book on a table or in

A special contemporary book Latitudes of Longing (a love story addressing our connection with earth) by Shubhangi Swarup which first became available in the USA in 2020. Kelly admits a bias here as she had the privilege of meeting the author in India a few years ago. Two classics -- The Hobbit and Pride and Prejudice. If you are planning to start a small business. Kelly strongly recommends: Doing research about monetary and time commitment. Making and documenting a detailed business plan. Sticking with the plan (even when things aren’t going perfectly).

2. Mix the honey, water, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice and a pinch of salt together. Stir to combine well. 3. Heat up an oven-safe skillet (cast-iron skillet preferred) on high heat. Add the olive oil. Pan-fry the salmon, skin side down first, for about 1 minute. Turn the salmon over and cook for 1 minute. Turn it over again so the skin side is at the bottom. 4. Add the garlic into the pan, saute until slightly browned. Add the honey mixture and lemon wedges into the skillet, reduce the sauce until it’s sticky. 5. Finish it off by broiling the salmon in the oven for 1 minute or until the surface becomes slightly charred (optional step). 6. Top the salmon with parsley and serve immediately.

Dessert:

Molten Chocolate Cakes Total Time: 35 minutes | Serves: 4

Ingredients: - 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter

- 2 egg yolks

- 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, preferably Valrhona

- ¼ cup sugar

- 2 eggs

- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

- Pinch of salt

Cooking Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 450°. Butter and lightly flour four 6-oz. ramekins. Tap out the excess flour. Set the ramekins on a baking sheet. 2. In a double boiler, over simmering water, melt the butter with the chocolate. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs with the egg yolks, sugar and salt at high speed until thickened and pale. 3. Whisk the chocolate until smooth. Quickly fold it into the egg mixture along with the flour. Spoon the batter into the prepared ramekins and bake for 12 minutes, or until the sides of the cakes are firm but the centers are soft. Let the cakes cool in the ramekins for 1 minute, then cover each with an inverted dessert plate. Carefully turn each one over, let stand for 10 seconds and then unmold. Serve immediately. “It is important to gradually transition and adapt to healthier eating, rather than making drastic measures that will make it difficult to stick to your resolutions.”

FUELING A HEALTHY BODY Eating healthy is a crucial part in meeting your fitness resolutions. Ditching the processed foods and filling your fridge with fresh produce and protein is a great start in cleaning up your diet. Something as simple as setting a timer every hour to remind yourself to drink water, can make a significant difference in your health. Using one day of the week to meal prep is another great habit to develop. This allows you to proportion out healthy meal options for the week and saves you from choosing unhealthy food as last-minute, quick alternatives. It is important to gradually transition and adapt to healthier eating, rather than making drastic measures that will make it difficult to stick to your resolutions. Try to start by limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption, and avoiding late night snacks before going to bed.

“Daily meditation is a positive way to reflect on yourself, reflect on your day, and be mindful of all the appreciations in your life.”

MAINTAINING THE MINDSET Taking care of your mental health is just as important as reaching your physical goals, especially in these difficult times. Daily meditation is a positive way to reflect on yourself, reflect on your day, and be mindful of all the appreciations in your life. Just taking time to pause, breath, and acknowledge how you feel can help you ground yourself and release some of the stress from your mind. Reaching out to loved ones and staying connected is so important while we live in a socially distant world. Checking on others’ wellbeing, as well as being mindful of your own is a goal we should all have on our New Year’s resolution list.

The Arcade Providence 65 Weybosset Street, Providence, Rhode Island The Arcade was built in 1828 and is the nation’s oldest indoor shopping mall in downtown Providence. This historic structure has Greek Revival columns, granite walls and classic facades still standing beautifully after more than 185 years watching over Westminster and Weybosset Streets. Those who worked or lived in Providence at the time spent their days in the open center atrium to enjoy the delicious eateries and shop the small stores. The Arcade was designed by Russell Warren and Tallman & Bucklin in hopes for it to be a space for shopping and gathering inside with skylights for natural light. The design was inspired by many similar buildings found throughout Europe.

At the time of the Arcade’s opening, there were only a few stores on the west side of the building. Most of the shopping was on the east side. The Arcade was slow to attract customers and was known as “Butler’s Folly” for several years because of its distance from the shopping district. All things changed when a high end hat shop opened up, which attracted many wealthy customers to the neighborhood. More and more stores started to develop and it became a major shopping area in Providence. Unfortunately, the Arcade closed in 2008 because not enough retail space was being used. To revamp this old mall it took the commitment from several new stores to take over the empty retail spaces. It reopened ints doors in 2013 and is now used today as a residential and commercial mixeduse building. You can choose to shop at any mall, but you will never experience a mall with this much history and beautiful architecture! From soup and pizza to doughnuts, cakes, danish, and more, Samantha Chamberlain has mastered vegan baking. As owner and Head Pastry Chef of Blush Bakeshop, Chamberlain has been selling her made-from-scratch vegan baked goods and pastries at farmers markets and pop-up events around Rhode Island since 2018. Shortly after establishing herself, she was ready to open a retail location to take her business to the next level. She contacted Providence Center Director Manuel J. The Mayor of Providence attended to welcome this fresh and exciting bakeshop to the community. Samantha Chamberlain is now excited to share her love for vegan baking with Rhode Island, from the comfort of her own shop.

Along with offering fully vegan baked goods, Chamberlain strives to use natural, organic and local ingredients as well as eco-friendly packaging for all her treats.
