Lyly Sri Haryati Bahasa Indonesian translation.

YOU ARE ON THE GILI ISLANDS
CULTURE &HISTORY
The three Gili Islands, composed of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, are located off the northwest coast of Lombok. In Sasak language, "gili" means "small island". There are more than 30 Gilis around Lombok, but Trawangan, Meno and Air are by far the most frequently visited. Because of their proximity to the equator, they have a tropical climate throughout the year with an average air temperature of 28C and water temperatures ranging from 26 to 29C. The rainy season runs from November to April and the dry season from May
to October. The Gilis bathe in the Bali Sea at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and enjoy a drier micro-climate than the rest of Indonesia due in part to the fact that they are situated between two great volcanoes - Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Like the majority of the Lombok community, the inhabitants of the Gili Islands are primarily Muslim and each island has a mosque(s) emitting sounds of live prayer five times daily. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language spoken which unites all of the country’s islands but Gili locals
speak 'Sasak Gili Air' which is slightly different to 'Sasak Lombok'. About 200 years ago, fishermen from Sulawesi of Makassar, Bugis and Mandar ethnicities arrived on the Gili Islands. They began to settle temporarily because of the abundance of fish in the sea and the presence of fresh water on Gili Air and at that time, sectioning off a bit of land with string was enough to claim it. These otherwise nomadic people began to settle on the Gilis and cultivate the land, planting peanuts, tapioca and corn whilst continuing their tradition of fishing. They sold and exchanged their produce in the markets of Lombok and also traded portions of their land for livestock, rice and other much needed items not native to the islands. Coconut palms are indigenous to the Gilis while mango, banana and papaya trees have been introduced over the years. The first Western traveller to set foot on the Gili Islands came in 1984 to Gili Air. By the mid 1990’s Bali had gained international recognition as a travel destination and the Gilis began to be known as an off-the-beatentrack paradise escape. Today, the Gili Islands are flourishing and are attracting all types of visitors from every corner of the globe. Over time, the people of the Gili Islands have adapted to a multitude of changes and cultural immersions, but have managed to maintain their cultural identity. Historically the people here have seen their days of hardship when during WWII, Lombok and the Gili Islands were occupied by Japanese forces. The islands were used to contain prisoners of war and the locals endured forced labour. A hill situated on the south of Trawangan was used as a lookout post and today remnants of the bunker still remain. Trawangan derived it's name from the Indonesian word "terowongan" meaning "tunnels" of which a network were dug by the occupying forces. The holes have since been filled in. 13 Gililife
DESTINATION GILI TRAWANGAN
THE UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND OF FASHION & FUN
TRAWANGAN When you hear about Gili T you probably also hear the words "party island" yeah? Thought we should just address that straight away! Gili T gained this title because it is the largest of the three northern Gili Islands with the most development, hence it offers the greatest abundance of everything - including nightlife. There are fantastic parties every night of the week that attract large crowds of people from all different walks of life and every corner of the globe. Nightly features start with a sizzling local food market and advance into live music, beach parties and DJ's. There's also the option of watching movies screened at an open air beach "theatre." The rumoured growth of Trawangan from
Gililife 14
a backpacker island into something of a glam island is supported by the unveiling of new upscale boutiques, restaurants, resorts, spas, and now a heli-pad, however, it remains a hub of charm for a wide spectrum of travellers. It's an iconic island of variety with numerous options for every budget/lifestyle for eating, sleeping, entertainment and activities. Luxury Villas abound and less expensive accommodation is available for the budget traveller. Gili T has extraordinarily beautiful beaches and shimmering ocean waters of crystal-clear visibility for diving and snorkelling. This island boasts some of the finest coral gardens and the widest range of dive centers with the best socializing opportunities.
Although it is predominately known as a party island, Gili T has much more to it and venturing away from the densely developed east coast, you can find a plethora of vacant beaches. Renting a bicycle is a great way to see the island, bearing in mind there are some sandy patches! Seeing how life works here can be eyeopening, its not an escape from reality, just a slightly different one, but understandably surreal none the less! There are several conservation organisations based here including Gili Eco Trust, The Gili Shark Foundation, Cats of Gili and Horses of Gili. For getting involved in beach clean ups visit one of the dive centres on the island, make your vacation meaningful by giving back to the island! As you may know - there is no motorized transport on the Gilis and what a soothing break that can be! Surfing is popular off the south and it's not unwise to speak to locals about the break. For a supreme viewpoint walk up the hill on the south that was previously used as a lookout during WW II.

THE SPIRITUAL & RELAXING ISLAND OF LOVE
MENO
Set between Gili Air and Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno arguably offers the finest beaches of all the Gili Islands. The sands are white and soft beneath your feet and you can relax on vacant stretches of beach lined with coconut trees. Its waters are teeming with life and it is very common to spot a turtle whilst snorkelling. The island is still reflective of local lifestyle and

time moves at a leisurely pace. Out of the three Gilis, Gili Meno is the least developed island, where you can completely relax amongst abundant nature and create your own tropical holiday adapted to your needs. Explore its peaceful paths by pushbike or on foot; enjoy the green and blue panorama while riding on a cidomo (horsecart) without being disturbed by large crowds or buildings; venture to the eerie remnants of an abandoned resort- where a popular wreck-dive site exists just offshore. Gili Meno offers a great selection of local and western restaurants, from small warungs to fancy beachfront
terraces, you will have a wide choice of flavours against the same tropical and peaceful backdrop. You will meet interesting local artists and seasoned foreign travellers, and appreciate their smooth rhythm of life. A variety of accommodation options ensure a choice for all tastes and budgets; from eco-friendly star gazing platforms to luxury glamping tents, Gili Meno offers secluded properties as well as luxury resorts, and a lot of activities. Small dedicated dive centres, natureinspired yoga schools and water sport centres are just some of the ways you can fill your time between a swim with the turtles or a tropical cocktail.

GILI AIR
THE ISLAND OF WATER, CHARM & BALANCE
The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air is aptly named after the Indonesian word "air" meaning "water." It is the only Gili Island to have natural underground fresh water wells. Gili Air is gem of a spot that allows you to sample the best of both worlds of the Gili Islands- it has the relaxing charm of Gili Meno and a bit of the night life of Gili Trawangan. Here you can take it fast or slow and enjoy an abundance of water sports from diving to surfing to kiteboarding and land activities such as yoga and cycling. In the evenings you also have the option of watching movies screened on the beach (weather permitting). Gili Air has pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters Gililife 22
gili AIR that soothe and revive. It is the most locally populated island with 1500 residents and it's not hard to see a special pride amongst the locals for the awe that their land inspires. There is the biggest concentration of bars and restaurants on the east of Air where you can take in views of lush green Lombok and the heights of Mt. Rinjani. Venture to the northwest and you will find yourself on empty sands gazing at the majestic Agung volcano of Bali. For sunsets be sure to be on the north/west side of the island. Happiness is infectious on this island and it's friendly inhabitants will never miss a chance to make you smile. Gili Air has a great selection of restaurants including homemade
Italian or Mediterranean food, Spanish tapas and exquisite cuisine options as well as a number of charming Warungs serving all the best local dishes. There's a range of accommodation for every budget from backpackers to bungalows (on the beach and in the village) and private villas and resorts. There are also a number of spas to choose from and you'll be delighted to find quality shopping on the island! Because of Air's beauty and increasing popularity as a dive and travel destination the island is seeing rapid development but somehow maintains it's local charm and atmosphere. Wander throughout the island to take it all in as you lose and find yourself here!

LOMBOK
AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND TRADITIONAL LIVING
LOMBOK
With its largely unspoiled natural environment, vivid, diverse traditional culture and increasing infrastructure, Lombok island is an interesting compromise between touristic Bali and wild Sumbawa. Jagged coasts and sheltered bays, white-sanded empty beaches and lush green hills lined by rice paddies overlooked by majestic Mount Rinjani characterise Lombok’s natural landscape, while in traditional villages a diversity of practices coexist. The island is dotted with mosques, symbols of Islam, the Gililife 28
most practiced religion, but there are some important Hindu temples scattered in the West, heritage of the Hindu tradition. Sasak people, Lombok’s indigenous people, practice a syncretic form of Islam (wetu telu), which blends Hindu-Buddhist influences, Sunni Islam, animism and ancestral worship. Authentic Sasak villages offer a valuable insight into the island’s traditional culture, famous for the turun temurun, Capital city Mataram is a busy town with colourful markets and the gate to Senggigi’s
stunning bays in the North and Mt Rinjani’s green slopes to the East. In the South, world-class surf breaks, a multitude of pristine beaches and gentle hills are an open invitation to explore the surroundings at one’s pace and enjoy the tropical vibe. The East offers a complete different scenery; from waterfalls, rainforests and hills carpeted with rice paddies, the surroundings of Mount Rinjani provide a myriad of hike options, from easy walks to very challenging treks in a beautiful panoramic landscape. In the South-West, facing Lembar harbour and Sekotong, are the less known Gilis (meaning “small island”), where snorkelling in the lively reef and chilling on the empty beaches are the few tourists’ main activity. With its cultural and environmental diversity, Lombok is the ideal destination to discover something new everyday.

From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free. JACQUES COUSTEAU, Time Magazine, March 28, 1960
AN EXCEPTIONAL MARINE WORLD FULL OF BEAUTY & BIODIVERSITY
SCUBADIVING Divers from all over the world come to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. Warm clear waters, many dive spots easily accessible and suitable to all levels make the Gilis a great diving destination, appealing to beginners who experience the Big Blue for the first time as well as to experienced or technical divers who are interested in small sea creatures and unusual dive spots. Expect to swim with elegant white and black-tip sharks and friendly turtles, observe extravagant cephalopods and ghost pipe-fish hidden in plain sight and explore wrecks turned into the home of Gililife 32
colourful fish schools! Home to over 3,500 marine species including a variety of small sea creatures, the Gilis are also becoming a sought-after destination for muck diving. There are a multitude of centres that can plan just the right dive for you and the Gili Islands Dive Association ensures high diving standards and safe diving practices are applied at all times. Every diver contributes to a “reef tax, which is included in the cost of their first dive and goes to support the NGO Gili Eco Trust, a conservation organisation who implements projects such as coral reef restoration biorocks.

SNORKELLING RESPONSIBLE SNORKELLING: • DO NOT walk on the reef • DO NOT touch ANY sea creatures or reef • DO NOT take ANYTHING from the ocean • BE AWARE of strong currents Gililife 34
Snorkelling is a good way to freely explore the waters around the Gili islands. Let yourself drift with the current whilst being careful because sometimes it can be very strong. You can easily rent the mask, snorkel and fins on all the Gili islands. Another option is taking part in a snorkelling trip – a day out on a boat.
Many local agencies offer this service and you can book this trip on site or at your hotel. You leave in the morning around 9am for a full circuit of the Gilis, you stop for lunch and come back at about 4pm. Regardless of the island where you depart from, the boats will tour the most famous spots of the three islands, where marine life is abundant. Expect to see parrotfish and butterfly fish, dense schools of trevallies as well as some species of soft corals. Snake eels are also a common sight and you will most probably see giant turtles swimming along your side.

SPECIES
BOBTAIL SQUID Bobtail Squid, Sepiolida, are tiny cephalopods, enthralling divers just off the Gili Air shores. More apparent during night dives, these enchanting creatures glow at night because of a bioluminescent bacteria they carry with them. The glowing bacteria, used as a camouflage ploy, protects them from predators below, by mimicking the illumination of the moon and magically eliminating their own shadows! They disguise themselves during the day, by covering themselves with a layer of sand. If detected, they turn white, release a puff of dark ink, in the shape of their body and dart away. Females reproduce just two months after hatching and generally breed only once. Females lay their
Gililife 36
eggs under coral ledges and die soon after, while juveniles hatch without parental care Squid are considered intelligent and their brains are large in comparison to their bodies. They reach a maximum of eight centimetres, have two tentacles and eight suckered arms. These diminutive superheroes, fly through the water by either using the fins on their cape or by jet propulsion! As our immune systems are so comparable to this species, as a model of symbioses, squid were sent into space to study human immune responses to spaceflight! Witness the sheer beauty of these teeny squid on a night dive. There is so much more to them than meets the eye!
MORE GILI ISLAND
WATER SPORTS The Gili Islands offer endless possibilities for water lovers besides diving and snorkelling. Enquire at one of the many watersport centres for a variety of activities on all the three islands. You can take a glass-bottom boat tour to see the underwater world without venturing
into the ocean. Rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace or opt for a stand-up paddle board, a great way to approach the water and test your balancing skills. On Gili Air and Gili Trawangan there are a few nice surf spots which are worth a “dawnie. Please
be aware of currents and tides and surfing experience is advisable. Subwing is the ultimate water sport that allows you to glide in the water pulled by a boat at slow speed, while parasailing will take you to new heights and safely land you back in the water! Have fun!

FREEDIVING A BREATH-TAKING EXPERIENCE
Summertime as a kid meant long days at the pool, which would end when my mom stood up and walked over to us to tell us it was time to go home. Trying to extend the day for just a few more minutes, as soon as I would see my mom coming, I would take one breath and swim underwater to the other side of the pool so that my mom couldn’t talk to me. Little did I know that this was my unofficial introduction into freediving.
I had never tried scuba and definitely had never heard the term freediving before signing up for my first course. But after talking to the instructors of the shop, they had my attention. I’ve said for years that I am terrible at breathing, so I wasn’t sure I would be any good at freediving. What I learned is that it is not so much about how you breathe, but about techniques, you learn to relax your body and mind so that you use less oxygen.
Freediving is a thing that almost everyone does, but you might not be familiar with the term either! Have you gone snorkeling and dived down to the bottom to get a closer look? That is freediving! Have you challenged your friends to see who could hold their breath the longest in the pool? Also freediving! Are you a surfer that goes for the big waves and spends some time underwater after a wipeout? Freediving. Now that I have completed a few freediving courses on Gili Air, I feel like so much more of the ocean is available to me. When I see turtles on a snorkeling trip, I can safely stay underwater for much longer to be able to observe these beautiful neighbors of ours in their home (from a distance of course, don’t stress out the turtles!). If I see something sparkling from the ocean floor, I know how to equalize the pressure in my ears so that they don’t hurt and I can dive down 20+ meters to check if it is lost pirate treasure (no luck so far). Best of all, I have met so many other freedivers just by spending time going out on fun dives and spending time at the shop. Talking to other people that are also in this small, but very international community is so amazing. Listening to other people who have seen whale sharks, mantas, pyrosome, just makes you want to grab your mask and suit, and a buddy (never freedive alone!), and head out to the nearest ocean to explore and just play in nature’s playground. If you haven’t tried freediving yet, then make the most of your time here in the Gilis and sign up for a course. You will learn more about your body, about your mind, and then apply those things while you freedive and learn more about the ocean. It is an experience that can’t be compared to anything else. See you in the blue! Written By: Jen Drew

THIS IS LIFE FESTIVAL 24 HOUR BEACH PARTY
THIS IS LIFE FESTIVAL BENEFITS THE LIVES OF ISLAND HORSES ‘This is Life Festival’ on Gili Air will proudly support the not for profit organization, Horses of Gili, which operates beneath the NGO Gili Eco Trust. The Horses of Gili organisation was founded by Gili Trawangan residents.
When planning the festival, the organisers decided to support a cause that would aid the islands to thrive in a more sustainable manner. The working horses of the Gili islands keep things moving on the islands for both locals and tourists. With no motorised vehicles allowed on the Gili Islands, transportation is by foot, bicycle and horse cart, with most of the labour intensive work carried out by the ponies. The Horses of Gili organisation's primary focus is education regarding basic diet and care, they also offers clinics and care for sick, injured and abandoned animals. Horse owners are also afforded a safe place to learn about the care of their ponies. The organisation also promotes natural horsemanship and assists in ensuring that the welfare of the ponies continues to improve on all of the islands. As a result of their exceptional work, an increase in the health and well-being of the horses has been achieved. The organisers of the Festival are committed to providing support and will donate a percentage of their ticket sales to the Horses of Gili.

GECO
GOEZD APSARA
DJ GOEZD
DJ GECO ‘’Purveyor of deep, infectious dance grooves and feel-good atmosphere.” That’s how GECO describes himself as a DJ. Never afraid to go too deep, his emotive musical selections are his own therapy. Having grown up on his father’s eclectic combination of funk music (George Clinton, James Brown), European electronica (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream), synth-infused 80s music (Depeche Mode, Gary Numan)... all which became infused with his own love for house and techno music, GECO ended up with quite a mixed spectrum of musical influence. Today, this translates into sets where he picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of this music that he loves best: beautiful synth work, ethereal backdrops, brooding basslines, and dark melodies... all on top of a pronounced foot stomping house and techno beat. A very active member of his local community, GECO is no stranger to the ups-and-downs of a small-town music scene. Though he loves playing in nightclubs, festival, and special events, his love for music goes beyond the spectrum of mixing tunes. As a producer and promoter, he has found plenty of ways to express himself musically. He also likes to write his music in his free time. “For me, it’s all about mood and a deep, hypnotic groove... playing those tracks that get you tapping your feet and nodding your head without you realizing it, regardless of genre, tempo, style, or release date. “

Many remarkable yoga schools scattered around the three islands offer classes that cater for the tastes of discerning yogis as well as to open-minded visitors who want to try yoga for the first time.
Ubud is Indonesia’s most famous yoga destination, but more and more people come to practice on the Gilis, where yoga classes can be taken in bamboo structures surrounded by peaceful gardens, rooftop terraces where you can meditate as the sun appears on the horizon, or breezy shalas on the beach. For a closer contact with the water element, you can even try yoga on a stand-up paddleboard. Worst-case scenario you will have a refreshing swim!

Turtles Green Sea Turtles, have a mostly vegetarian diet, consuming mostly seagrass, or the occasional jellyfish. Adults can grow up to 114 cm in length and weigh around 190 kg. Hawksbill Sea Turtles have a sharp, curving beak which allows access to food from crevices in the coral reefs. They eat sponges, anemones, squid and shrimp. Adults can grow up to 91 cm in length and weigh 40-60 kg. Hawksbill shells, the primary source of tortoiseshell material used for decorative purposes, has caused them to be on the endangered species list. Reaching sexual maturity can take 20-30 years, with a lifespan of around 80 years. The young turtle’s journey from the beach to the shore is imperative to organ development and strengthens their diving and breath hold. Around the Gili Island, projects attempting to aid the turtles, have been redirected into other methods. The hatchlings avoid the shore and potential predators, preferring to seek shelter around floating logs or driftwood. The process of hatchlings rubbing their bellies along the sand, ensure the females return decades later to the exact spot where they originated! Protecting the nesting sites and cleaning the beaches, is the current approach, so its winners are selected naturally. Their predators are larger sharks, octopus and some pelagic fish. Sea turtles needing to reach the surface to breathe, are often caught in gill nets and fishing hooks, which leads to drowning. When encountering turtles, give them space, no teasing or touching as the bacteria, oils in our skin and sunscreen are damaging to their shells.
To assist the Gili Island turtles, reduce your plastic, dispose of trash mindfully and bring reusable bags and water bottles.

Cuttlefish May I tell you guys something about one of my favorite animals underwater... It is the cuttlefish and it belongs to the family of the sepias. There are around 120 different known species of cuttlefish. The main difference is in comparison to other species like squid and octopus, the cuttlefish has a so called cuttlebone in its head. It‘s not a real bone, it is an internal shell which provides to the animal buoyancy control. Male cuttlefish have 8 arms, females just 6. sometimes the weaker males hide two of them so that they don‘t get attacked by other males. The cuttlefish is very smart and is even capable of counting. When you put two glasses, one with one shrimp in it and the other with four, the cuttlefish will choose the glass with four shrimps. The cuttlefish can change color. It does that in order to blend in with its surroundings, to hunt or to mate. A fun fact about the cuttlefish is that the cuttlefish itself is colorblind. When it comes to mating, it looks quite interesting, similar to kissing. The reason for that is that the „bag“ of the female is very close to her oral cavity. The other option for mating available is that the male hands the female a 'spermbag' for later use. Sometimes the female collect multiple different 'spermbags' and decides later which of these individuals is the best partner for reproducing. Cuttlefish have a lifespan of one to two years ,and they have 3 hearts. Two of them are just to pump blood (which is blue-green) to the large gills. The third for the rest of the body.

Biorocks Biorocks are artificial coral reefs and are now one of the Gili Islands most unique underwater features! In 2004, the first biorocks were installed in an effort to restore the damaged coral reefs around the islands and recover the natural habitat of the resident sea life. To date, Gili Eco Trust, an NGO based on Gili Trawangan, has planted more than 150 structures! So how do you recreate a natural coral environment? Stray or loose-living corals are carefully collected from nearby damaged reefs and transplanted onto artificial structures. The corals are attached with wires or wedged between steel bars, which are then quickly cemented into place by growing minerals, forming over the surface of the structure. A low voltage of direct current is put through the coral and this encourages dissolved minerals in the sea water to accrete onto the steel structures, forming a solid layer of limestone which is the same composition of beautiful reef-building hard corals! With this energy boost, corals can focus on growing bigger, faster and stronger and have now been proven to be more resilient to climate change and warming oceans.
Gililife 60
The Biorocks are solid structures for hard reef-building corals to grow on and they foster many new corals and attract a vast array of reef fish, schooling fish, and many other marine life forms that gravitate to the area. It is a fish nursery as well as a coral nursery. The structures also create valuable wave breakers to protect the beaches from erosion and are making for incredible dive sites. Eco-tourists are encouraged by the Gili Eco Trust to dive or snorkel around the structures and learn about how to boost natural coral growth up to six times faster. Visitors can even take a selfie on the famous Vespa Scooter project!
"This rare species belong to the holy grail for underwater photographers and tops critters list" The Gili Islands, Northwest of Lombok have an abundance of marine life. One of the most searched fish in the world can be found in the Gili Islands. This rare species belong to the holy grail for underwater photographers and tops critters list; The Rhinopias. The Rhinopias are classified in the scorpionfish family Scorpenidae, includes only six species. The Paddle Flap Scorpionfish or Rhinopias Eschmeyeri has been spotted in dive sites which includes Hans Reef and Meno Slope. These unique critters have special characteristics that includes a strange protrusion and upturned mouth with eyes set high on top of their unusual heads. They usually sit motionless between hard or soft corals and utilize camouflage to blend in with their surroundings; just like all other scorpionfish. Divers can easily identify this species with a narrow body. In general, their body is uniform in colour and can be lilac, white, red and purple with very few filaments or appendages on the skin. They have two tentacles on their underside of the lower jaw. These critters rarely swim, however when they do, they move about by crutching along the bottom on their pectoral and pelvic fins. They are predators and will consume any fish and ornamental crustaceans that they can digest. During hunting, they sit motionlessly for their prey to approach within striking distance. Sometimes, they will mimic a piece of debris by rocking forward and backward until the prey is close enough for them to lunge forward and suck in its victim. Do not underestimate their mouth size. If you see a Rhinopia yawn, you will notice that they can eat a large prey.

"From the mesmerizing flower corals that move independently and are beautiful to watch... to leather coral and huge cauliflower coral structures"
Corals When you visit Lombok and the Gili Islands you know you are going to be met with insta-worthy sandy beaches, turquoise water, and a chilled vibe second to none. This continues on when you go below the waves rolling onto the shore. The three Gili Islands are fringed with beautiful coral reefs that can be seen from above the water and make diving one of the most popular activities on the Island. Underneath the surface, you will be met with many different types of coral from boulder corals to elephant ear sponge and beautiful giant sea-fan coral. Diving around the islands is hugely popular with all divers due to the diverse range of corals and the mix of soft and hard coral. The hard coral

structures that form the huge walls that run around part of the island, create a base of ecosystems and allow beautiful soft corals to grow. From the mesmerizing flower corals that move independently and are beautiful to watch... to leather coral and huge cauliflower coral structures. Combined, these corals create a haven for a diverse marine ecosystem that is swarming with life. The Gili’s are progressive in coral restoration programs and part of the Gili Island coastlines have Biorock formations, which are man-made structures allowing baby corals to grow at an increased rate, with the help of very low wattage electrical currents. They also help the corals deal with the changing climates and
strong currents that the Gili Islands face on a regular basis. All these combined create a unique environment that keeps divers coming back to the islands, again and again, to marvel at its beauty.

Ocean Etiquette The underwater scenery around the Gili Islands is quite beautiful. It is not perfect by any means, as destructive fishing techniques decades ago, left behind its mark. However, nature reclaims its place. Divers descend along white sandy bottoms and from there move towards the rich shallow coral reefs or further down to untouched ridges of beauty. Hard corals dominate the reef, but there are stretches of soft corals covering the ground like grass on the meadows. The majority of areas have still untouched marine life and in-between, on the sand, stones and coral remain. Countless critters hide there, with larger fish and turtles grazing for food. It is not uncommon to encounter larger animals, such as reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish or a graceful eagle ray. It is certainly never boring to dive here, no matter whether you prefer the muck or the open blue. The Gilis offer excellent diving for everyone. Together the dive centres strive to maintain and heal the diving grounds. They join regularly to host various ecoprojects on and around the islands. There are organized beach and underwater clean-ups. Divers fix and create safe mooring lines for the many boats and install and oversee Biorock projects. It is a commendable team effort and all divers of any experience level, are invited to join. Divers (and non-divers) can do their part even without specifically joining any of the eco-projects. Here are a couple of things to remember above and under the water.
ABOVE THE WATER • Reuse and recycle plastics of all kind. • Refuse plastic straws and ask for those made from natural materials. • Refill your bottles in one of the many participating resorts, restaurants and dive centres. • Wear only reef-friendly sunscreen. Rash vests are a preferable alternative. • Throw trash in bins and keep cigarette butts in their ashtrays.
BELOW THE WATER • Maintain good buoyancy and keep well off the ground. • Refrain from touching any animals, corals or the ground. • Collect marine debris, unless its removal destroys other marine life. • If it is too big or not safe to collect on the go, report it to your dive centre. • Take all your memories, but leave nothing but bubbles in the ocean. 63 Gililife

RAJA BAR RAJA BAR’S REVAMP IS FIT FOR A KING GILI AIR We met with Agung, owner of Gili Air’s beachfront Raja Bar, to discover the secrets behind their recent refurbishment. Having originally visited the Gili Island back in 2005, Agung made regular trips back to the island every couple of years. His mountain hiking took him all over Indonesia, but there was something about Gili Air that kept drawing him back. Agung realized very soon that he was actually in love with this island when buying his first patch of land, right on the beach, almost 10 years ago. Unsure of what to do with it, he consulted family and friends, as well as tourism experts, and they all agreed; they told him to keep the land or in his words “They told me that I would be stupid to sell this land!”. And no regrets since then, listening to them is one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
Gililife 68
Raja Bar features a fully stocked bar, along with an international restaurant. The menu is packed with delicious drinks to satisfy any holidaymakers dreams, along with all the Western food you can imagine. Of course, there are plenty of local delicacies available, too, ranging from Indonesian dishes to Thai-inspired cuisine. The year of 2015 marks one of the most important one in Raja Bar’s history: the year they added a live band to their already popular bar. The band changes every couple of days, with live entertainment every day (bar day on Thursday, as per the island’s rules). The bar offers the perfect place to grab some dinner, treat yourself to fantastic drinks and rock the night away. If you’re looking for a calmer atmosphere, you can sit on the beach and still hear the band playing.
www.salimcottage.co.id After years in the business, he clearly knows the island’s guests incredibly well. He describes the island as a romantic one, an island of love. Agung is definitely keen to cater to all types of tourists, from backpackers to the growing tourist demographic of over-30s. Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings, they play smooth acoustic – with violins. This quirky mash-up brings guests from all over the island, as do their Friday and Saturday night ‘old top 40 music’ nights. Their renovated interior with wooden train tracks have been repurposed into slats around the bar, 1940s-style tiles decorate the walls and stained-glass windows cast a rainbow of light across the restaurant. Raja Bar offers different
styles of stay, from 4-bed villas to cottages right by the beach, there’s a full range of accommodation options, along with an in-house spa. The accommodation is beautifully appointed. Fifteen bungalows have garden or pool views and four traditional Joglo teak house have been added. Each Joglo has four rooms and can house an entire family quite comfortably. The vibe of the place, however, stays unchanged, which explains why Raja Bar is more popular than ever. This is the place where people come to talk, to look for friends, which is why their motto is, “Come as a guest, leave as a friend". We will probably be hanging there if you’re looking for new acquaintances.

DSM DIVE DIVING DEEP INTO THEIR STORY GILI TRAWANGAN For those after a diving experience to remember, DSM Dive Shop is the place to be. Located on Gili Trawangan, with an additional booking office and a transport platform in the nearby town of Lombok, DSM is the oldest dive shop covering the Sengiggi region and Gili Trawangan. With a range of dive courses available, this 5-star PADIapproved school is truly designed with everyone in mind. Its familyfriendly options stand out on an island that is well known for being every partygoer’s dream destination. Despite opening its doors to anyone and everyone, owner Greg is keen to keep things personal. ‘We work with very small groups to provide the best guidance we can’, he says of their 4-person maximum capacity per dive. This focuses on each
Gililife 70
individual’s experience. This is what makes DSM so special and stems from Greg’s own journey into diving. ‘I started diving 25 years ago in Belgium’, Greg speaks of his home country with a smile, ‘and, after that, I started diving all around the world’. Having explored some of the best dive sites across the globe, he understands the importance of teaching each person in a way that best suits them, hence the small class sizes. So, out of all the diving spots in the world, why Gili Trawangan? Other than Greg’s obvious love for the vibrant island, he explains that it offers incredible diving opportunities. ‘It’s a very nice place for diving because you have roughly 25 dive sites around the Gilis - but each site doubles up because you have the both shallow and the deep side,’ he explains.
www.dsmlombok.com
There are 50 or so options available and he is keen for his customers to have the best possible experience. The facilities and friendly staff reflect that desire. With a huge practice pool, 2 dive boats and offices across Gili Trawangan and neighbouring Lombok, Greg’s dive shop caters to everyone’s needs, with a fantastic team working alongside him. DSM just celebrated its 8th birthday, four years of which Greg has been at the helm of the
business and it’s clear he really knows these waters. "Due to the current here, students learn how to drift straightaway, which is an extra skill that makes them better divers." Again, it always comes back to how DSM can best help their customers develop their own diving abilities. "The main thing is the personal guidance we provide and that is how we make a big difference", he concludes, and we couldn’t agree more.

MAO MENO YOGA MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS GILI MENO
MaoMeno is a dedicated environment for anyone questing meditation and mindfulness. The story behind this beautiful place resides in the owner’s adventures. Kike, MaoMeno’s owner, was traveling for about a year and a half when he fell in love with the magical Gili Meno. He was breath taken by the beauty of the island and had no choice, but to buy a piece of paradise. That was ten years ago and since then, a lot has happened. Living on the island was not an easy task in the beginning since no electricity was available to his property for over a year and he lived off the grid. However, it didn’t stop Kike. He took on the task of converting his land into a fully functioning yoga oasis.
Gililife 72
That being said, Kike possessed no building training, so he, therefore, had to learn all about building and design. The hard work evolved into a passion. Kike is very proud of his work! Fastforward after the years of construction, creation, and sleeping outdoors and now MaoMeno is home to a beautiful Shala, (Sanskrit word for home and a space for yoga), that runs regular retreats. MaoMeno offers a number of options for its guests who can choose from en-suite bungalows, huge villas or bamboo housing inspired by an ultraZen Japanese interior. For those traveling on a budget, Kikes offers the option to sleep outside, where guests can enjoy the breeze and the sound of the ocean. He talks with passion about the interiors of each room, designed to make visitors feel at home – grounded, comfortable and inspired to pursue their own nirvana.
www.mao-meno.com
For Kike, the main essence of MaoMeno is the connection to nature. He created his place in a way that no separation can be perceived between the hotel and nature – it’s part of the beauty of it all. Add to this idyllic décor, the absence of neighbors around allows stargazing freely, when night comes. MaoMeno offers Embodied Flow Yoga – an intuitive style of movement that focuses on connecting your mind and body through continuous motion. Kike explains this process as an embodiment that allows every single cell to become aware of itself. It’s basically tapping into one's own curiosity and empowering guests to become
their own teachers. This is the kind of experience he wants his guests to enjoy at the Shala. The journey for Kike doesn’t stop there. He really dreams of developing eco-cleaning products and empowering the locals to be able to stock them in their own shops. Kike is determined to make a difference to the Gilis. His plan is to offer products in bulk, from washing-up liquid to laundry detergent. That way customers can bring their own containers and avoid single-use plastics. Kike describes MaoMeno, "As a 'retreat within an island retreat''. MaoMeno provides a space to gain inner peace. It is the perfect spot to be in communion with your inner self ..... 73 Gililife

HORSES OF GILI GILI’S GIFT HORSE GILI TRAWANGAN Tori is well-known across the islands as one of the friendly faces of Lutwala Dive on Gili Trawangan. Having moved to the Gilis with her husband back in 2014, she quickly got involved with various animal welfare projects across the region and ended up launching her own project, with her latest one called "Horses of Gili". When they moved to Indonesia, they quickly realized that they wanted to make a difference. They soon met Susannah from "Cats of Gili" and helped her establish the cat hospital in Lutwala Dive. That’s when Tori decided that she wanted to reach more animals and her main focus was on horses. Her primary goals were to help organize the clinics and to gather factual data on the horses on the Gilis.
Gililife 74
“Horses of Gili” is a charity that relies on public donations, therefore Tori constantly needs to find new ways to raise money. She also works on changing public perceptions of animals’ welfare. Many tourists, for example, are saddened by the way the cidomo (cart) horses are used around the islands. It is a cultural shock because many visitors have never been exposed to working animals before. She explained that there are many things going on that are very beneficial to the animals, but aren’t necessarily visible when you walk up to a cidomo. This the reason why some tourists may worry about these animals’ wellbeing on the islands. However, when you have a closer look, you realize that the horses receive twice-annual vet examinations, are dewormed and administered vitamin injections and food supplements.
www.horsesofgili.com
They also have their teeth examined and their hooves are treated. In reality, for a developing country, the horses are treated extremely well and Tori is eager for that to continue improving. On top of that, Islanders and locals now have access to written guides that detail how to feed horses correctly, clean their heels and hooves and how to fit the bit (the metal section that goes in their mouths) in a healthy and comfortable way. These small changes make a huge difference, as in 2010, the average Gili horse’s lifespan was only 2.5 years, while in 2017, the average
age improved from 8 to 10 years. Tori keeps on with the good work explaining how because of the new facilities, there will soon be a vet available on the Gilis, with the help of Animal Aid Abroad that will fund the project. Tori is very proud of that advancement because it will be for all the animals on all three Gilis, and it will be a massive achievement. Her next plan? Spread this message to everyone and mainly tourists through different information packs in hotels and also promote the fact that Gilis’ horses are happy and healthy and hope for more people to join the initiative.

We want to create awareness for the use of single-use plastic and reduce the amount that’s being used on Gili Air. We created the campaign Plastic Free Paradise to help Gili Air to become plastic free! Our aim is to educate locals as well as tourists and provide information about how they can leave nothing but their footprints on beautiful Gili Air. Our #PlasticFreeParadise campaign is a wholehearted project that we are building on with new ideas. See here what we’re doing so far to become a Plastic Free Paradise!

17th August 2019
INDONESIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY The 17th of August marks the independence of Indonesia as the country was under the Dutch imperialism for centuries. Although Bali wasn’t controlled by the Dutch up until 1906, the country was under both British and Dutch influence until the 18th Century and ended up being completely controlled by the Dutch in the 20th century. In 1945, Indonesia’s declaration of independence took place on the 17th of August of that same year known locally as the Proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia. It took four years of revolution and wars for the Dutch to accept the Republic of Indonesia as an independent entity. It wasn’t until 1949 that finally the Republic of Indonesia was internationally recognized. That year, therefore, marks Gililife 78
the end of centuries of Colonialism. Since then, Independence Day is joyfully and colorfully celebrated all over Indonesia as a remembrance of the people who fought for the country's' liberation. Different activities take place throughout the country, and Lombok has planned a day full of celebration with various competitions such as eating kerupuk (fishy crisps), climbing palm trees greased with oil and all sort of different games to entertain, but also to educate, since all these games have a symbolic connotation to them. For example, eating kerupuk is a way to remember people living in poverty and climbing trees is to symbolize the effort it took Indonesians to gain their freedom.
On Independence Day, the country wakes up to the sound of the National Anthem, Indonesia Raya (Great Indonesia), as the red and white flag is hoisted. Schools and offices decorate their buildings and the young and elderly gather wearing their uniforms to commemorate the most momentous anniversary of the country. Some of the younger generations celebrate the occasion with philanthropic activities such as donating to the poor, visiting orphanages and by giving blood. As the day goes on, different animations such as local markets showcasing their individual skills, local food and music and some traditional dances are amongst the highlights of this special day. Everywhere, the Indonesian flag will be flying high in the sky, hanging proudly from local houses and restaurants. Although the air is charged with remembrance, no negativity is felt on the islands as everyone is dancing and celebrating the day away with joy and gratitude for their ancestors.

GILI FOODS
POTATOES
NOT SO HUMBLE … Nowadays we tend to forget the simplest ingredients in profit of the trendy ones, even though sometimes those ingredients have the same good health benefits as the others. With this in mind, we decided to have a closer look at one of the least in vogue aliment: the humble potato. In a fast-changing world, where everyone is constantly looking for food inspiration, the elementary potato might be your best friend. This gluten-free nutriment can indeed be used in so many different ways and has so many benefits, too often forgotten about. Introduced by the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia around the 19th century, the kentang holanda (translated as Dutch tuber) was cultivated all over northern Sumatra in less than 15 years by the Batak farmers. Although potatoes are grown worldwide, Indonesia is known as the biggest potato producer in southeast Asia. Moreover, they’re available all year long no matter the season, which makes it really easy to grow, so easy that they were the first ever vegetable grown in space. Potato is rich in fiber, potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B6 all benefiting the heart’s health. Its lack of cholesterol makes it one of the best options for increasing the risk of heart disease if you include it in a balanced diet. Although it’s made up of 80% water, in terms of nutrition, the potato is closer to pasta, rice and bread, due to its high amount of carbohydrates, also known as starch. This versatile vegetable grows relatively easily without the need for fertilizers or chemicals and is therefore considered as one of the most environmentally friendly vegetables. So apart from its not so pretty façade, everything else is beneficial in this round shaped nutrient. It is up to you to be as creative as you wish! Gililife 86
