The motto for the Jerome Boys Basketball Program is attitude and effort. It starts at the freshmen level and extends all the way up to the varsity. Varsity head coach Joe Messick says “there are two things you can control as a player, your attitude and your effort.” It starts at the freshmen level and continues all the way up to the varsity.
Everyday practice ends the same for the varsity. The team huddles together and has a cheer that signifies where all the hard work hopefully gets them. All the film sessions, the intense practices, the thought of proving the state wrong is all put into the two words the team ends practice with is, “State Champs.” With only two returning varsity players from last year’s squad the team looks like it lacks experience. However; eight of the eleven players are seniors and have a mindset
dedicated to make it all the way to the state championship. New to the squad this year is senior Austin Leavitt. Leavitt transferred to Jerome from Nevada. Leavitt is a strong perimeter player that can also attack the basket strong. The Jerome boys have improved greatly as a basketball team. With 12 games in the season gone by in the season, the Tigers record currently sits at 8-4. Messick believes the team has improved every time they have stepped onto the court. He says that his players come ready to practice and the intense practices help make us better. The Tigers target for the season is to make the state tournament and perform well. Messick said, “Teams in the tournament handle the ball well and play aggressive. That’s how I want the team to be by the end of the season.
