While the all-new Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-27 closely resembles last year’s multiple race-winning car, the 2012 chassis has been substantially revised from the ground-up, with all major systems updated or re-designed for the new season. The most evident visual differences include more tightly waisted rear bodywork, developed to improve flow to the rear of the car, and a revised cooling system, which re-directs the gearbox oil-cooler. Jenson Button joined Vodafone McLaren Mercedes as the newly crowned world champion at the end of the 2009 season and re-signed a new multi-year deal with the team last autumn.   His runner-up position in the 2011 world drivers’ championship, including victories in Hungary and Japan and a career-best last-to-first final-lap win in Canada, along with nine further podium finishes, underlined his credentials as one of the most respected and complete drivers in Formula 1 history.   The 2012 season will mark his 13th season in Formula 1.   Jenson said: “With the regulations remaining relatively stable, we’ve really been able to focus on the detail with this year’s car. I still think we had a very fast package last year – it was very strong in certain areas – and our race pace was almost always fantastic, but we’re hoping for a further step forwards in 2012. With Mercedes-Benz, I think we also had the best overall engine and KERS Hybrid package in the pitlane.

Arriving in Calgary, Alberta, you might wonder where all the Rocky Mountains are; for the city, famed for its Stampede, which is 100 years old this summer, is set amongst the flat lands and farmsteads. Driving west, pimples appear on the horizon, which within an hour or so are turning into hills, then into mountains. Canmore lies just outside the Banff National Park and is becoming a centre for outdoor pursuits. Banff, a more established town, is, not surprisingly, within the park which carries its name. The town has been welcoming tourists since the 1880’s and its Hot Springs and other attractions still appeal today. Dozens of bars and restaurants vie with souvenir and camping goods stores for the visitors’ attentions and there are plenty of hotels, including the renowned Fairmont Banff Springs, waiting to accommodate travellers on all budgets. Driving north through the Bow Valley and further into the National Park, the peaks, the lakes and forest beneath them seem to compete to offer the best photo opportunity. Moraine Lake is one of the most photographed in Canada and Lake Louise offers an iconic image of snow-clad peaks rising high above its shores. Venturing further north from Lake Louise, you follow the Icefields Parkway, an aptly named route where glaciers cover vertiginous mountain tops and, perhaps even more stunning views than before, seem to appear around every bend. At the Columbia Icefield Visitors’ Centre, there is the chance to join a trip on to the Athabasca Glacier in a specially designed bus and view the icefield from a unique perspective, by driving on to it. From Lake Louise to Jasper, the Icefields’ Parkway is simply breathtaking and ranks as one of the world’s

top drives. In addition to mountain vistas, it’s not uncommon to see elk, mountain goats and even bears en route too. Jasper National Park is as stunning as its neighbour, with waterfalls cascading down enormous, craggy mountainsides and valley floors carpeted with forest. At its heart is the town of Jasper, which, whilst smaller than Banff, has plenty of attractions and it retains a certain historic charm. It is also great for anyone interested in wildlife – elk roam the streets and eagles soar high above, with bears, wolves and marmots enjoying a peaceful existence in the woods nearby. The drive to Edmonton is like a drive back to civilisation, with campgrounds giving way to outlet stores and eventually to the cityscape. Four hours from the tranquil haven of Jasper you can find yourself in retail heaven, at West Edmonton Mall, North America’s largest shopping centre. Whether you fly home from Edmonton or drive back to Calgary from here and, even if you can’t see them, after a journey of such delight, the Canadian Rockies will always be in your mind’s eye.
