s a participant in this unique expereince we invite you to join a dialogue that goes much further than a single country. We ask you to further educate yourself on enviornmental issues that currently effect the Netherlands through a series of lectures from renoun experts, but this is just the first step. We challenge you, the audience, as people from numerous backgrounds and perspective to apply your knowledge and contribute ideas to our global discussion. This conference aims to utilize the pivotal roll of the Netherlands in Europe as a catalyst for change and the creation of new ideas.

The country continues to set a standard with it’s thriving economy and attention to innovative environmental and social projects. Examining the problems that currently face the Netherlands and the innovative solutions that they have already begun to implement is the perfect starting point for a powerful dialogue to create sollutions for Europe as a whole.

r. Burke is the Executive Director of the National Pollution

Prevention Roundtable, the largest membership organization in the United States devoted solely to efforts to avoid, eliminate, or reduce pollution at the source. Before becoming director of the Roundtable, Burke worked for the Environmental Protection Agency. He was the Philadelphia Region Pollution Prevention Coordinator for nine years, and he developed EPA’s International Course on Principles of Pollution Prevention and Cleaner Production.

r. Verburg is professor of Environmental Spatial Analysis and head of the Department Spatial Analysis and Decision Support at the Institute for Environmental Studies, VU University Amsterdam. Peter Verburg has established a leading position in the field of land use analysis and modelling. He has developed and applied a wide range of methods to analyze spatial patterns of land use at scales from local to global.

r. Riedstra is the Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. Mr. Riedstra recieved his degree in Political Science in 1980 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam where he specialised in international relations. In 1993, Mr Riedstra moved to the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. His areas of responsibility included the spatial aspects of the transport of goods, the development of Dutch ports and the decision-making regarding Maasvlakte 2.

Speakers - General Speakers

Jim Walls Mr. Walls has worked for 33 years in Natural Resource Conservation Services. Jim’s main efforts involve biomass development, carbon credits systems for forestry, third party monitoring on the Fremont National Forest and collaborative forest management. He is also working on geothermal, hydro, solar and wind energy projects in Oregon. Jim served five years as an advisor at the University of Washington, initiating several forest carbon research projects and has served on the Governor’s Renewable Energy Workgroup helping develop policy and legislation for renewable energy in Oregon.

Jeroen Van Der Sommen Mr. Van Der Sommen is the Managing Director of the Netherlands Water Partnership.He recieved his degree in Earth Sciences with specialization in hydrogeology. Mr. Van Der Sommen has published numerous publication on water management and is a co founder of AVKO publications. The group works to improve development cooperation by using ‘open source’ tools with new and unexpected partners. Mr. Van Der Sommen specializes in integrated water resources management, development cooperation, and water and sanitation.

Dr. Alexander Rinnooy Kan

Dr. Kan has degrees in Mathematics from Leiden University and Econometrics from Amsterdam University. In 1977 he moved to Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where he became a professor in operational research in 1980, Director of the Econometric Institute in 1983 and Rector Magnificus in 1986. In 1991 he became Chairman of the Confederation of Dutch Industry VNO. As of August 2006 he is President of the Social-Economic Council (SER). Alexander Rinnooy Kan has published 10 books and 150 articles.

Louise Fresco Mrs. Loise Fresco is a Dutch scientist, director and writer. Outside academia, Fresco is a member of the Supervisory Board of Rabobank Nederland, one of the largest banks currently operating in the agricultural sector worldwide. Currently, as a University Professor in Amsterdam, she writes a syndicated newspaper column, is an advisor to the Dutch government on socio-economic policy, science and sustainability. She is a member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Aurthur C. Paterson Professor Petersen is Chief Scientist at the PBL Netherlands Environmentl Assessment Agency); Professor of Science and Environmental Public Policy in the IVM Institute for Environmental Studies at the VU University Amsterdam; Petersen co-leads the research theme ‘Science and Values for Environmental Governance’ within the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis. This research theme focuses on the role of scientific knowledge and values for addressing complex environmental problems, and specialises in three key areas: communicating scientific uncertainty; values and sustainability transitions; and producing sustainability science.

Cees Veerman Mr. Veerman studied economy at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He obtained his doctorate in 1983 in Wageningen. Veerman is professor of Sustainable Rural Development at Tilburg University and Wageningen University. Mr. Veerman was the Dutch Minister for Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries from 2002 to 2007. Until July 2009 he chaired the meta-evaluation committee Quality Assurance in Scientific Research.

Test the Waters This session will focus on transboundary pollution in the netherlands and work to show the interrelatedness of enviornmental problems within all of europe. The underlying theme of the first session is union, asking people to come together to collaborativly think about issues surrounding this significant enviornmental problem and others surround it.

The last session of each day will be an open discussion where attendees will be invited to share thier oppinions and collaborativly discuss the day’s topics. Starting a dialogue among educated people from many backgrounds and perspectives is essential in creating solutions for the Netherlands and Europe as a whole. You have the power to initiate change.

This session will focus on development issues realted to overpopulation, specifically urbanization, spatial shortage, and spatial planning. The netherlands has the highest population density of any country in europe and a very small landmass. Examining how the country has dealt with this problem provides valuable insight.

Encroaching Habits This session will be a continuation of the topics touched on in the previous session and will furthure examine thier consequences. This Session will focus on the effects of overpopulation on the environment. A variety of topics will be covered breifly with an in depth focus on Fragmentation of natural habitats, habitat loss and loss of species

This session will elaborate on issues realted to agriculture. The topic of agriculture is very multi-dimentional, as the countries largest export it is closely tied with the countries eceonomy. Additionally Agricultural pollution and over farming present significant enviornmetnal strain. In a country with incredibly small landmass these issues have lead to a variety of unique sollutions, most notably land reclimation to create new farm land. This session will discuss the problems related to agriculture in the Netherlands and the countries innovative sollutions.
