GHS Speech & Debate

With the help of incoming novice debaters, Garland High was able to sweep Berkner during the last tournament of the year. Bernker was home to the usual array of tournament gourmet (soggy ramen noodles, cold pizza, and overpriced soft drinks), but the team burnt some calories by running up three flights of stairs to get to rounds all over the school building. And the school district says that Debate shouldn’t be counted as P.E. credit. In spite of these “troubles” the team was able to triumph over some stiff competition, even beating Plano Senior, one of our biggest rivals. By the end of the semester Garland high school had put itself back on the debate circuit as a team to watch out for. Perhaps a bigger success was the fact that the gentleman of the team had successfully perfected the art of tying a tie and walking around for over 12 hours in heels was no longer an obstacle for the ladies. This tournament began the avalanche of qualifiers for TFA and would set some on the path to qualify at tournaments in the future.
GHS Varsity Speech & Debate won FIRST PLACE SWEEPSTAKES at Berkner December 13 & 14! (We beat Plano Senior by 75 points!) We now have 6 State Qualifiers! HAPPY (belated) HOLIDAYS FROM THE GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM!
DENTON GUYER TOURNAMENT
Never had the garland high school debate team encountered what they did at Denton guyer. What exactly caused half the team to burst out laughing and the other half to drop their jaw in shock? A bobble head trophy for winning first place in sweep stakes. After finding that the creekview tournament had been cancelled on December 7 due to ice and snow, GHS journeyed to denton guyer to compete at the first tournament of 2014. braving the winter chill, the team entered the enormous school and got straight to business. This one day tournament allowed GHS to ring in the new year with success and even more TFA state qualifiers.

FLOWERMOUND/MARCUS SWING TOURNAMENT
To go to a swing tournament is to know the feeling of complete and utter exhaustion. With two tournaments crammed into the time normally used for one tournament, some members of the team had to suffer through, I mean, compete in up to 6 debate rounds or 9 individual event rounds on Friday night. After getting a quick nap at the local La Quinta, the team awoke with sleepy eyes and dined on the breakfast of kings: Texas shaped waffles. Because most of teenagers are used to a sleep deprived high school life, the team was able to regain spirits quickly and earn a third place sweepstakes over both tournaments. As the official season winds down the team only has one more tournament to qualify for TFA state with. Like Stewy says, “It’s never too late!” and GHS may have some state qualifiers to come at Jesuit/Vines.
This weekend Varsity Speech & Debate attended TWO tournaments at the same time. We were awarded 3rd Place Overall Sweepstakes for our performance at both tournaments! We now have 14 T.F.A. State Qualifiers (only 5 away from our record)! Thanks for your support!
