SEASON PREVIEW AND COACHING STAFF

WOMEN’S TENNIS LOOKS TO CHALLENGE RECORD The Olivet College women’s tennis team is excited about the 2009 season. With a nice mix of veteran players and newcomers, the Comets look to improve on last year ’s performance and to challenge the school record for wins in a season. This year ’s team features a senior, a junior, two sophomores and four freshmen who are set on reaching and exceeding their goals. Head Coach Mary Anne McMullen is counting on the returning players to help the newcomers adjust to the college game. Leading the Comets in 2009 is senior captain Jaclyn Mummaw (Buchanan). She has been a mainstay in the lineup since her arrival on campus, including the last two years at the No. 1 singles flight. Last season, Mummaw earned secondteam All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association honors. “Jaclyn has been a significant part of our success over the past three years,” said McMullen. “Her ability to compete hard in every match she plays will set the tone for the team.” Also returning for the Comets is junior Celeste Gruber (South Haven). During her two campaigns, she has seen action in the middle part of the Comet singles and doubles lineup and will look to solidify that part of the lineup again this year.

“Celeste has grown tremendously during her first two seasons,” said McMullen. “Her leadership will be important to us reaching our goals.” Sophomores Leanne Scudder (St. Joseph/Lakeshore) and Kristen Wolfolk (Lansing/Haslett) are eager for their second year of action. Scudder and Wolfolk saw significant time last year and will be aiming to improve on their performance. The freshman class is comprised of Jenna Baker (Battle Creek/Harper Creek), Giana Guerra (Lansing/Waverly), Paige Sedgewick (Lennon/Powers Catholic) and Kelsey Singer (Brooklyn/Columbia Central). “I am excited about our freshman class,” said McMullen. “I believe they will have a positive impact on the court and in the classroom. All of them are going to have a good chance to come in and make significant contributions in both singles and doubles. They bring with them good tennis experience and a positive attitude.”

HEAD COACH MARY ANNE McMULLEN

ASSISTANT COACH MATT WAIT

Mary Anne McMullen begins her ninth season as the head coach of the Olivet College women’s tennis team. Over the last eight years, McMullen has helped build the Comets into a solid program. In 2004, Olivet won six matches. The biggest win was 6-3 over Alma College, which snapped a 104-match losing streak in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. In 2005, McMullen’s Comets bettered the 2004 win total by three with nine victories. In addition, Olivet had a player earn All-MIAA honors for the first time in school history. In 2006, the Comets won eight matches. In 2007, Olivet won a schoolrecord 10 matches. Under McMullen’s tutelage, Rachel Vilums became a three-time All-MIAA player. McMullen earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Olivet in 2001. While a student, she was a member of the golf and tennis teams.

Matt Wait serves as an assistant women’s tennis coach at Olivet. In addition to his coaching duties, he is the director of the Global Citizen Honors Program, director of judicial affairs and an assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies. Wait, a 1999 Olivet graduate, was a four-year letterwinner on the men’s soccer team. He also earned a law degree from the Michigan State University College of Law in May 2003.

Now Open! The Cutler Event Center

Thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus, The Olivet College Cutler Event Center is now open. Cutler contributed two donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. According to Cutler, his support of the center was given in recognition of Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback and led the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1. “Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as Dave Cutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majority of the event center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski. “This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitive edge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College community is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.” The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility was added on to the existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It is being used by the college and community for activities ranging from athletic events

to commencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts and conferences. The new facility includes a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs use the facility for practices and competition. In addition, the softball and baseball teams can use the batting cages for extra practice. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning. A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer with Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988, he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development of three major releases of the product. In addition to leading the Windows 2000 team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all parts of the system. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, Cutler was awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.
