112 Years of MIAA Football - the Traditions Continue!

2009 MIAA Composite Schedule and Results

W e l c o m e t o t h e 11 2 t h y e a r o f Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football competition. On behalf of each of our member institutions, student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators, I hope you enjoy today’s game and festivities. While watching the contest, I would also encourage you to exercise a positive spirit of sportsmanship toward all game participants and officials. We in the MIAA Dave Neilson are signatories to the NCAA Division III sportsmanship initiative - “Be Loud, Be Proud, Be Positive.” All you can do in support of these principles contributes to a more civil, fun-filled and respectful competitive environment; consistent with our league traditions as the nation’s oldest athletic conference. The 2009 season again promises to be very competitive, with the rekindling of traditional rivalries. We continue to see balance across our conference and expect the title to be in dispute right up until the final games in November. The MIAA had another outstanding year in 2008-09, featuring individual national champions in swimming and diving track and field, and individual athletes earning All-American honors in virtually all of our 18 sports. Academically, 55 of our 128 teams were recipients of the conference team GPA award for maintaining a cumulative 3.3 average, and more than 930 varsity letterwinners earned Honor Roll of Athlete Awards for maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA. Seventy-five letterwinners received recognition for achieving Honor Roll status all four years at their institutions. Observing this level of performance both “on the field” and “in the classroom” demonstrates the concept of the student-athlete, a philosophy we in the MIAA value and which truly describes our participants. With this rich educational tradition, commitment to athletic excellence and our dedication to athletics as part of the educational mission of each college, the MIAA remains the premier Division III conference in the United States.
