OLIVET COLLEGE

OLIVET COLLEGE Established in 1844, Olivet College is a private, liberal arts institution located in south central Michigan, between Battle Creek and Lansing. Olivet was one of the first institutions in America to admit women and minorities. The college is dedicated to its vision of Education for Individual and Social Responsibility, and remains true to its roots by providing a quality higher education to all, regardless of gender, race or financial means. Olivet College is home to more than 1,100 students, who study under The Olivet Plan. In this unique educational experience, students engage in both curricular and co-curricular programs that combine real world experiences with lectures and service learning. Olivet College offers 49 majors leading to a bachelor of arts degree, a Master of Arts in Teaching

degree, and dual degree programs with two higher education institutions in Michigan. Olivet is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The college offers opportunities for students to get involved in more than 20 clubs and organizations. Approximately 40 percent of all Olivet students participate in athletics on a non-scholarship basis. Olivet consistently has one of the most diverse student populations of any private institution in Michigan. In a typical year, the student body includes 15 percent minority students and international students from six countries. All of this makes the campus community a microcosm of the world – an ideal place for learning to live and work in the global society of the 21st century.

MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Adrian College Albion College Alma College Calvin College Hope College Kalamazoo College Olivet College Saint Mary’s College Trine University The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference. The 2008-09 school year marks the 122nd consecutive year of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From the very beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-season championships in multiple sports. There have been changes in some of the sports (bicycle racing and Indian club juggling have long since disappeared, and basketball did not even exist in 1888), but these changes have served to develop the MIAA into one of America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women. The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schools that have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s. Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belonged to any other formal league. Albion and Olivet were charter members although Albion is the only member to hold continuous membership. Ex-members are Michigan State University (1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000). The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960 until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the first time that the league added members outside the state of Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that the name of the conference would not change. The inaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997). The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the league accepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as an associate member for the purpose of competing in football. Wisconsin Lutheran left the MIAA after the 2007 season to join the Northern Athletics Conference. Trine University of Angola, Ind., became a conference member in 2004-05 upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.

Now Open! The Cutler Event Center

Thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus, The Olivet College Cutler Event Center is now open. Cutler contributed two donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. Construction of the facility began last October. A grand opening ceremony will take place after the Homecoming football game Oct. 4, 2008. According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognition of Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback and led the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1. “Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as Dave Cutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majority of the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski. “This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitive edge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College community is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility was added on to the existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used by the college and community for activities ranging from athletic events to commencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts and conferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practices and competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs will use the center for offseason workouts and conditioning. A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer with Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988, he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development of three major releases of the product. In addition to leading the Windows 2000 team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all parts of the system. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, Cutler was awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.
