ABOUT OLIVET COLLEGE Established in 1844, Olivet College is a private, liberal arts institution located in south central Michigan, between Battle Creek and Lansing. Olivet was one of the first institutions in America to admit women and minorities. The college is dedicated to its vision of Education for Individual and Social Responsibility, and remains true to its roots by providing a quality higher education to all, regardless of gender, race or financial means. Olivet College is home to more than 1,000 students, who study Burrage Library under The Olivet Plan. In this unique educational experience, students engage in both curricular and cocurricular programs that combine real world experiences with lectures and service learning. Olivet College offers 28 programs leading to a bachelor of arts degree, a master of arts in teaching degree, and dual degree programs with two higher education institutions in Michigan. Olivet is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The college offers opportunities for students to get involved in more than 20 clubs and organizations. Approximately 40 percent of all Olivet students participate in athletics on a non-scholarship basis. SWIMMING AND DIVING 2007 SEASON PREVIEW The goal for the Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team in 2007-08 can be described in one word, “three-peat.” Last year, the Comets captured its second straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship by a mere nine points over Hope College. With 19 returning letterwinners, including six All-MIAA selections, the goal to “three-peat” is a realistic one. The returning All-MIAA performers are seniors Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus), Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep), Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) and Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silverthorn CI) along with junior Shawn Bergman (Chelsea) and sophomore Nathan Busscher (Hamilton/Holland Christian). Bylina, a two-time All-MIAA selection, excels at each of the four strokes. At the 2007 MIAA Championships, he broke the school record in the 200 (1:56.84) and 400 (4:09.72) individual medley. Bylina also ranks among the top-five alltime in the 100 freestyle and the 100 and 200 butterfly. Meisner, a three-time All-MIAA pick, and Key rank 1-2 all-time in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Each of his first three years, Meisner competed at the NCAA Division III National Championships after winning the 200 breaststroke and being the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at the MIAA Championships. Last year at the league championships, Key placed third behind him in both events. Takahashi holds the school record in the 200 butterfly, an event which he won at the 2006 MIAA Championships. Bergman was selected as the 2007 MIAA Most Valuable Diver after winning both events at the league championships. Busscher had a stellar freshman season, as he placed fourth in the 200 and 500 free and 3rd in the 400 IM at the MIAA Championships. He holds the school record in the 200 freestyle (1:43.76).

Senior Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) tops the Olivet record books in the 50 (:21.50) and 100 (:46.88) freestyle. Junior Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) is right behind him in both events. Other returning freestyle swimmers on the roster are Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha), brothers Brian and Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio), Greg Seger (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) and Jason Wheatley (Portage/ Central). Seger is a sprinter, while the others are distance freestylers. Brian Jaffee is the current school-record holder in the 500 and 1,650. Brian Johnson (Lansing/Eastern) joins Powers, Seger and Takahashi in the backstroke events. Powers holds the school record in the 100 (:53.98), while Takahashi achieved a school record in the 200 (1:58.39). In addition to Key and Meisner, Nathaniel Burchfield (Lansing/Everett) and Andy Williams (Fenton) are returning breaststrokers. Burchfield, Bylina, Meisner and Williams add depth in the butterfly events. Justin Hulsebos (Wayland) and Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge) join Bergman as a solid group of divers for the Comets. All three placed in the top five in both diving events at the MIAA Championships. Freshmen Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington), Mike Harden (St. Johns), Rick Kinsey (Chelsea), Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western), Zach McMunigal (Grand Blanc/Flint Powers Catholic) and Carl Scozarri (Centerline) add depth at each of the swimming events, particulary in the freestyle. With all of this talent, there is no doubt that the Comets have the studentathletes, who can continue to make an impact in the MIAA and compete another league championship.

HEAD COACH JAKE TABER Jake Taber is in first season as Olivet’s head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach. Prior to joining the Olivet staff this past summer, Taber spent the last three years at Hope College, serving as an assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach and admissions representative. His coaching duties included managing the recruiting efforts for both programs, and assisting with training and development, as well as planning and meet management.

Taber earned a bachelor’s degree in 2004 from Hope, where he was a fouryear letterwinner on the swimming and diving team. He helped Hope capture the 2004 MIAA championship and was on two freestyle relay teams that competed at the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championships. Taber starred at Lakeview High School, where he swam for former Comet head coach Dave Stubbs. He lives in Battle Creek with wife, Kelly.

ASSISTANT COACH ADAM LYNG

DIVING COACH STEVE LEWIS

Adam Lyng begins his first season as an assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Olivet. He also serves the college as a campus safety officer. Prior to joining the Olivet staff, Lyng spent a year as an assistant coach for the Rockford Riptide Swim Club. His duties included the stroke and training development of swimmers ages 7-17. Before serving at Rockford, Lyng was the head men’s and women’s swim coach for Hudsonville High School for three years. During that time, he produced the most successful men’s team in the last decade, as well as one of the largest women’s teams to date. Lyng earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 2003. He was a four-year letterwinner on the swimming and diving team.

Steve Lewis is in his fifth season as the diving coach. He also serves Olivet as a campus safety officer. Prior to joining the Olivet staff, Lewis was a diving coach at Battle Creek Lakeview and Marshall high schools for five and four years, respectively. He attended Western Michigan University for two years and was a part of the swimming and diving team. Lewis lives in Battle Creek with wife, Tricia, and two daughters, Courtney and Kaitlyn. Courtney is a junior at Olivet and plays volleyball for the Comets.

Olivet College breaks ground for The Cutler Events Center Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributed two donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognition of his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility The Cutler Events Center. According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognition of Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback and led the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1. “Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as Dave Cutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majority of the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski. “This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitive edge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College community is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”

The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility will be added on to the existing athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It will be used by the college and community for activities ranging from athletic events to commencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts and conferences. The new facility will include a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room. Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs will use the facility for practices and competition. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs will use the center for off-season workouts and conditioning. A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designer with Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoft in 1988, he launched the Windows NT group and has since led the development of three major releases of the product. In addition to leading the Windows 2000 team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all parts of the system. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, Cutler was awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineering in 1993.
