HARBOR HAPPENINGS A Monthly Newsletter For Members February 2013

Real Estate Update

A

s we head into 2013 with unprecedented momentum, Tom and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to our success over the past three years.

First of all, we want to sincerely thank our Grand Harbor property owners for their referrals. There is no better way to sell the community than to have an owner attest to the quality and livability of this special place. Next we want to say how much we appreciate R.T. Bailey Construction Company for seizing the opportunity to become involved in Grand Harbor and for helping us grow the community with his new golf course home collection. We continue to encourage other builders to become involved and participate in our future. As a testament to how bright that future is, Grand Harbor contributed 24 of the 63 new housing starts in Greenwood County in 2012, or nearly 40%! This past year, Tom and I experienced our best year so far with The Challenge Golf Group, as property sales grew from 11 transactions in 2011 to 32 in 2012. Finally, we want to recognize and thank the great staff at Grand Harbor for all they do to make potential new owners feel so welcome. We couldn't do it without you!

Grand Harbor Attends 2013 Ideal Resort and Retirement Expos

W

e are committing nearly $50,000 this winter to participate in the Ideal Living Resort and Retirement real estate expos. So far this year Grand Harbor has traveled to New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. In February we plan to participate in the Greenwich, Connecticut and Washington D.C. expos. At the Ideal Living expos, dozens of retirement & resort communities come together under one roof, providing a great resource for people looking to retire or relocate to the South. Our company realized six new sales from this initiative last year, and our goal this year is 10-15 sales. With the increase in the number of expos we are participating in and the quality of the people we are talking to so far this year, we’re confident this program will bring a lot of new families into our community. In fact, the first three expos have yielded nearly 20 appointments already!

Hello Grand Harbor Members,

I

hope many of you are enjoying the few warm days we have this winter on the golf course. Although the course is dormant, the golf conditions are wonderful and the greens are rolling great. Unfortunately in the winter when the grass isn’t growing, careful cart driving is critical. Please obey all cart signs and drive your cart on the path when reaching the black cart signs. Carts have been driving to closes to the greens on several holes including the right side of #5 green and the left side of #3 green along with many others. If you are approaching puddles on the cart paths, please drive slowly through them instead of around them on the grass. Also, please leave your rakes just inside the bunkers after raking your footprints. Please do your part to help us take care of this great course.

Andrew O’Dell, Assistant Golf Pro

As many of you know Andrew O’Dell has stepped up to the plate with Zach Calhoun’s departure and is doing an excellent job. Andrew is excited about the opportunity and will be taking on more responsibility in the future. He plans to finish up his college degree at Piedmont Tech while working full time in the golf shop. Along with helping to manage the golf shop and conducting club tournaments, Andrew will be observing and learning how to teach this wonderful game by assisting me with the junior golf program along with such programs as Get Golf Ready and 3-Hole Play & Learn. Get Golf Ready and 3-Hole Play & Learn are two great programs for novice golfers to learn and improve their game. Both programs will be offered in the spring and a description of the Get Golf Ready program is included in this newsletter. I am happy to announce that video instruction will be available by the end of March.

This year the Golf Shop will be offering the Mill River Merchandise Plan to all members of Grand Harbor Golf & Yacht Club. This plan offers nonresident, social and golf members an opportunity to buy products at the lowest possible price. There is a fee of $150 to be paid in advance and then you, your spouse and children 23 and under can buy merchandise at cost including shipping + 15%. A more detailed explanation of the Mill River Plan was provided to you earlier last week and can be accessed by clicking the link above. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. It’s a great value for your membership and it ensures you can’t get anything cheaper elsewhere. I hope all of you are now aware that the GHIN system is up and running. Your old local number is still the number to use on the posting computer in the golf shop. The Patriot's “eClubhouse” website should be completed by mid-February. Once our website has been built, we will be able create events for which you can register online. To do so, you will need an eGolfer account; 

You can create an eGolfer account through this link: http:// www.ghin.com/egolfer/register.aspx.

You will need to know your GHIN # to create an account, which you can get by calling the golf shop.

After you click “Register”, you need to wait for an email from noreply@ghinconnect.com titled “Confirm Your eGolfer Registration”. It should come within a few minutes.

In that email will be a link for you to click to verify your account.

You will not be able to login before verifying your account.

Any problems with eGolfer registrations should be emailed to ghinnewproducts@usga.org.

As a result of this recent change to GHIN, the annual handicap fee has been increased to $25 per person to cover additional costs.

This amount will be billed in February so if you would like to be taken off the handicap program please call the golf shop.

The new golf schedule is now available in the golf shop and can be seen on our website. I would be more than happy to email you a copy if you would like, just send me an email at patriotgolfshop@gmail.com. The dates of our majors are listed in this edition of the newsletter. Thank you so much for your support over the last seven years and I look forward to a great 2013! by Tommy Thomas, Golf Professional

at Grand Harbor Player development program that provides fun, fast and affordable lessons

T

he goal in 2013 is to bring non-golfing members into the game of golf in a fast, fun and affordable way through the new Get Golf Ready in 5 Days program. The new industry-wide initiative is comprised of a series of five introductory lessons offered by Tommy Thomas in a small-group environment for the affordable price of $125. The Get Golf Ready program provides an affordable and rewarding educational experience for those who are interested in learning more about the game of golf. The program will provide a casual yet structured setting using fun, skill enhancement formats to help participants become comfortable on the links and enable them continue to develop their skills as golfers. Targeting the millions of adults who have limited or no experience with the game of golf, this new industrywide adult player development program’s five lessons provide basic skills instruction as well as information regarding the background of the game’s rules, etiquette and values. Significant on-course learning opportunities will be a part of each lesson. Overall, participants will gain insight into techniques regarding chipping, putting, full swing, half swing and bunker play as well as the fundamental guidelines regarding the use and maintenance of golf equipment, keeping score and navigating the course, among others. Following the completion of the five-session program, a smooth transition into the 3-hole play and learn program will ensure that graduates will be in the course playing in no time. Get Golf Ready was introduced in January 2009 as part of the World Golf Foundation’s Golf 20/20 initiative. Currently in its fourth year, the program is benefiting from unprecedented support and collaboration from the entire golf industry, including the World Golf Foundation, The PGA of America and other leading

national and state golf associations, organizations, manufacturers, media and companies. For more information, or to register for the Get Golf Ready program, please pick up a registration form in the golf shop. About the Lead Organizations: The World Golf Foundation develops and supports initiatives that positively impact lives through the game of golf and its traditional values. 4 Chic, Easy Table Decorating Tips From Jill

Tired of the same dinner table setting, night after night? Spruce up your dinner plans this evening with these simple tips: 1. Store bought flowers in a single vase is yesterday's news. Try placing the same flowers in multiple vases, grouped together with candles for a more inviting effect. 2. Add some fabric to your table. Purchase yards of fabric from your local craft store and hem the edges for instant runners! Adds drama and character to the normal white table cloths. 3. Don't be afraid to not match everything - mix and match colors, prints and fabrics for more character. Place a bright linen napkin on a gold charger for a pop of color. 4. Candles! Mix and match tapers, pillars and votive candles for an inviting and warm table setting. by Jill Causey, Director of Hospitality and Member Services
