Harvest

• Carbon Sequestration Potential • Renewable and low impact

Manufacture

• Rural economy activation • Regenerative supply chain

Build

• High performance structural properties • Immersive biophillic wood environments

Live

• Dense livable cities • Improving qualities of built environment while carbonbanking

BUILDING TYPOLOGIES WITH WOOD Under current CBC and IBC codes, there are a variety of building typologies that can utilize wood for R2 occupancies, and mass timber can be utilized in all of them. As cities densify, these typologies have the potential to deliver cost effective and sustainable solutions with compelling design attributes.

FEASIBILITY For housing, wood is often the structure of choice for cost reasons. Mass timber elements add an additional measure of performance and design opportunities to the wood technology toolkit.

biophilia Wood has scientifically- proven biophilic attributes that greatly benefit living environments.

COST IMPACTS As a superstructure, the hybrid system is more costly than a comparable wood framed structure. However, it also has the potential to reduce the scope of other trades, resulting in an overall reduction in cost. In the Cadence 21 case study, for example, a costly concrete transfer level was removed and replaced with a 9 ply CLT member. Other potential cost savings include reduction in construction schedule and reduction in on-site labor needed for assemblage.
