the spiritual closets of our lives and our mortal houses? I remember hearing the Sunday School teacher admonishing the class of women to be more giving and unselfish—to rid ourselves of things—particularly clothes—that we hadn’t worn within a year. Our spiritual clothes—attitude, behavior, disposition, etc., are sometimes the things in need of discarding—ridding ourselves of bad habits and behaviors. This might be a good place for a plug to encourage you to get Pastor’s recent sermon series on Changing and Breaking Bad Habits. This Spring will provide an opportunity to take a look at some things or some people that might need to undergo reconstruction, God’s consuming fire or simply a rebuilding in our lives! We can hear from God and follow His guidance more clearly when we de-clutter our lives of things and people that stifle our ability to fulfill God’s purpose for our life.

and especially during this season of economic uncertainty, some of us are and have been without employment and a source of steady income. But we know faithfully what Romans 8:28 says, “All things work together for the good of them that love the Lord and are called ebuild...GGBC Spring Revivals! according to His purpose.“ All of your pain, all of your worries, all of your uncertainty about the future—bring it to the cross because at the cross it is finished. It’s not everyday that one of our own is published for the truth in the midst of denial and opposition. Minister Kwame Nyerere was recently published in the WinstonSalem Journal Newspaper for his commentary on a different approach to reducing the number of suspensions of African-American students in public schools—“It actually comes down to the amount and type of background knowledge a student has before entering a school environement.” Minister Nyerere writes, “The more applicable the knowledge one has, the better one will adapt and function effectively in a school environment.” He further asserts “In too many African-American homes, children are not taught, before entering school, the value of reading and studying, the exercising of self-control when faced with a confrontation,

the proper use of one’s voice, the exercising of respect for others as well as the property of others, and the idea that learning isn’t always fun. Nyerere goes on to say that “When African-American students enter school lacking this type of background knowledge, it forces them to go into a survival mode, which results in misbehaving.” Minister Nyerere emphasizes that teachers can not fill this parental void—“By trying to fill this parental void, my colleagues are sending the message to parents, especially those who are unwilling to teach their children before school, that teachers are responsible for what was once called “home training.”” Nyerere believes that at this point, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction must include a major parental involvement initiative with consequences. Nyerere concludes that “To do otherwise, is to continue proposing and implementing the same actions and looking for different results.
