Curriculum Vitae GG-loop

GG-loop is an architectural practice established 2014 in Amsterdam by Giacomo Garziano. The office works within an international network, deriving its strength from an interdisciplinary approach. We work on different scales, ranging from urban planning to Furniture design. GG-loop is also involved in art projects, such as video installations, digital sculpture and music performances, embracing various creative fields. We believe that architecture, as answer to a spatial demand, cannot be merely functional. Every space needs to tell a story. This story acts as filter between functional request and creative intuition. Our main goal in the design process is to create a unique question, based on the analysis of context, necessities, possibilities and constraints. This question will create a unique answer, that will create another unique question, that will create another unique answer, a loop. Creativity, technical solutions and financial facts are fed into this loop, to finally obtain an answer that equally satisfies all the questions coherently, producing noble architecture. A good architect for us is a scientist, able to arrange components in harmonious proportions creating a totally new element, a composer enabling the orchestra to perform his piece in the best way.

Modular sofa

Vibrio is a modular furniture piece inspired by the relentlessly changing multitude of primary organic shapes created through molecular aggregation. Like nature displays itself in an infinity of forms, Vibrio, like a living entity can manifest in continuously alternating constellations and be reinvented through subtraction, addition and recomposition of the individual modules. Molecular properties like bioluminescence inspire its visually responsive surface, the iridescent velvet fabric traces movements and creates ever changing reflection patterns painted by its use.

Modular Table

Inspired by the unicellular microscopic organism, Diatom’s frame is composed of extremely light elements forming a rigid and almost invisible structure. Diatoms are unicellular organisms enclosed within a cell wall made of silica, displaying a wide diversity in form, usually bilaterally symmetrical. This imperfect symmetry, created when a diatom divides to produce two daughter cells, has inspired the ever changing look in the structure of the table. The circular table has no front or back side, allowing an ever new experience of the piece when walking around it.

Modular Cabinet

Zephyrus is a cabinet, a first piece of the modular furniture series designed by GG-loop. The polymorphic nature of the sculptural furniture piece reflects the quality of the butterfly as a symbol of life as transformation. Its dynamism evokes the beauty and elegance of that transformation in a space. As a butterfly, it is composed by a body and two wings: the main core of 3 drawers and two wings of 2 drop-front drawers each. Mirroring and rotation around the symmetric core create an ever transformable furniture piece. ‘The Butterfly’ does not have a front and back, but rather two front sides that can be rearranged at wish and extended or reduced over time.

Interiors of the House-Museum “The Seed Of Time”

When a body is sick it changes equilibrium, any method applied to cure it is actually perceived by the body as causing an imbalance initially, as an infection itself. This project seeks to generate new life, recreate a positive equilibrium, in a long abandoned space. Based on the Voronoi diagram, the furniture spreads its cells along the walls of the apartment embracing and purifying the entire space. This 2 rooms apartment is the first floor of a old complex built in the 50’s, made of typical local tuff stone. The young owners wanted to improve the quality of the space exploiting the beautiful 4 meters high vaulted ceiling by adding a mezzanine for the more private space of their bedroom.

Tatanka shop

TATANKA started as a little commerce some years ago in the center of Amsterdam. For its growing activity, the owner decides to renew and align the image of the stores. Our proposal starts from a branding approach. The aim is to induce a new TATANKA experience, improving identity, efficiency and quality of the new coming spaces. A wall/ceiling system, composed by modular units, hosts

technical installations and serves as display for the products. It can be adapted to the diverse dimensions of the different shops and different needs and circumstances, with small and big display units or technical ones. The whole space becomes a unity and embeds the visitors in an interactive journey.

Apartment for a Family

In an existing building in Altamura, the task was to renovate the apartment on the 2nd floor, with the addition of a private elevator. Due to technical reasons, the partition between zones stayed the same as the former configuration. Division between private and public areas is nullified; permeation between active area and rest area is introduced in order to avoid useless dark connectors. The connecting areas between closed rooms develop like a liquid

from a source, which is obviously the entrance of the apartment: the liquid develops on a surface in the same way as the path of the lodger defines the connection between different spaces. The walls, when necessary, enclose private spaces. The rest of the areas are fully connected, increasing possibility of diffusion of light and ventilation. The furniture flows along the walls to increase the perception of fluidity.

Refurbishment of the House-Museum “The Seed of Time”

The city and its various parts can be seen as a music score, the edifices acting as notes played by different instruments simultaneously. A melody is created by, what the Romans used to call Genius Loci, the spirit of the place, the conductor of the city. The Genius Loci of this area, after decades of abandon, has arisen from its sleep. The façade starts to vibrate and due to its structure creates an

ever moving surface. The red represents the strength of the genius. Red has the longest wave length of the visible spectrum and can be associated with the longest sound-waves that rather than touching our ears are felt in the torso. Hence it touches the instincts of the viewer, it is not linear, it is multifaceted perception that reaches out from the walls, transforming a residential building into a sculpture.

More than 100 years ago, Zeeburgereiland was born from the sediments of the river Ij to host the Dutch Navy. This area became a watershed of the river Ij splitting it into North side and South side. Long before that, when the Ij was one, this water hosts the ships which were prepared to sail the oceans. These years sets the Dutch hegemony on a global level, the Gouden Eeuw began after 80 years of war to set the country free.

Piet Hein was a commander of the Dutch navy, a privateer and considered also a freebooter. His ships were beautiful and its navy strong. They defeated all the opponents and made the Netherlands the one of the most acclaimed countries in the world, for art, military, industry, science, wealth. On a land that belongs to this water, a new ship is about to be built.

Villepinte Urban Plan

The urban planning is based on a hypothetical population growth of 10.000 people. The approach leads to look for a replicable architectural typology, already existing in town. The most interesting is the “Pyramids” one, a 70’s housing model by Arnauld and Barat architects. 4 houses’ unit, with external and internal connections, can be assembled in 2 units for 8 houses (24mx12m), 4 units for 16 houses (24mx24m) and more.

New urban composition was based on overlapping two kind of wefts: 1 – the orthogonal one, obtained by the model developed by Arnauld’s Pyramids and Barat. 2 – the “Strengths” one, extended from the Cardo and Decumano axes, generated by fluxes of the existing emergences, widening the dense housing development.

Spaces Virtual & Augmented Reality Arena

Our entire experience of reality is a combination of sensory information and our brains sens-making mechanisms for that information. If we can present our senses with made-up information, our perception of reality would change in response to it. We would be presented with a vision of reality that isn’t really there, and it would be refer to as a virtual reality. Inspired by this phenomenon and the brain’s reaction, the renovation of the New State pavilion is a new installation and hosts a virtual & augmented reality center to develop and promote this emerging technology. Simulation, game immersion and training will be provided on a large scale. This will be a new arena for full body immersion, representing a new interaction between the space and the body. The project has composed by two parts, offering a private and a

public area. The private space consists in the reorganization of the ground floor area, to become a Virtual Reality Academy with classrooms, digital laboratories, meeting rooms. The second part of the project aims to experience the hall as an empty entity with suspended paths made out of a textile structure. As the neurons organization, this new system of floating connections crossing the whole space, allows people to have new perspectives on the pavilion. The building seems semi-closed, protected. From the inside the translucent fabric and the transparent steel meshes ensure new exciting views on the building, respecting its historic value and new views towards the city and the park. The colored glass roof is re-introduced to restore the original appearance, still visible also from outside.

Immersive Performance

Deeply inspired by the album “Ïn the Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson, our main project of 2015 was inaugurated by an opening event organized by the art collective Elephants & Volcanoes. The immersive performance hosted 75 people over three days. The guests were invited to enter the house on their own and were guided through the rooms in which the sensorial experience was amplified by the sound, video and light installations, the culinary intervention, the dance performance, and the acting performance of the four inhabitants of the futuristic dimension of the house. Parallel to the performance, an exhibition took place in order to show the experience also to the people who didn’t have access to

the performance. A seed, as it grows, impacts and alters the environment around it. It begins a process of growth that, through the very nature of the seed, bridges the past and the future. The metaphor of the seed serves as the point of departure for an event that emerges out of a building that has been healed and protected by architectonic interventions; a building that holds within itself its past and future iterations simultaneously; a building that wants to alter and affect its environment.

Self-assembling, Self-organizing architectonic structures

Through the study of the analogy between forms and patterns of sound and of nature, we are conducting experiments concerning a different mechanical way to stimulate matter. Petri dishes and flasks hosting different media for diverse kinds of bacteria, algae, kombucha or fungi are exposed to precise vibratory frequencies. Through the study of models in nature, prototypes of integrative, self-assembling, self-organizing architectonic structures are created. A 3D-printer is hacked to host this system and extrude agar-based or bio-plastic structures as a bone system.

This structures host colonies of bacteria, algae, kombucha or fungi to function as a membrane. Sound as source of energy and matter on the smallest scale as vehicle of this energy can create harmonic structure propagating from atomic geometries to full scale living organisms. Digital generative simulation together with 3D-printing prototyping can lead to three-dimensional harmonic architectural sequences.

Requalification of a urban space

This historical site at the moment is little used because of the vehicular traffic. To convert this situation, we intended to create an intimate and spacious pedestrian area. Through street furniture that prevent traffic and parking, and a covered corridor originally inspired by the “Pergolato” of the nineteenth century, we create a protected area, interacting with the surrounding architectural space. A tent that recalls the “centrino”, typical domestic element

of the local culture. Besides being a decorative element with a strong historical value, it saves the passersby from the scorching sun in summer. At night, the lighting system integrated in the benches, creates a play of light that visually adds another layer to the square. In this way, the unprepared passerby begins his visit to the city from Piazza Madonna dei Martiri.

Jurassic Park

A few kilometers from Altamura, a small town in the South of Italy, about 30.000 dinosaur footprints were discovered in 1999 in a idle quarry. Currently it is the Europe’s richest and most important site. A Jurassic Park was proposed for this site, in order to preserve the footprints, to interest the scientific world and to activate

possibilities of economical growth. The whole site is covered by a light structure of steel and ETFE and solar panels. This “tent hosts all the facilities: the indoor park, the museum, hotels, restaurants, scientific and editorial center. Outdoor was the green entertainment park. The design was conceived to be sustainable thanks to energy saving and producing system.

Music Park

The project focused on creating a new space near the city of Pistoia for developing, teaching and discovering contemporary musical approaches. The project was composed by a Concert Hall for 1800 spectators, a Modern music school and a building for musical therapy and health activities related to the next hospital. These three buildings

forming a public square were located into an open system of a green park. The aim was to stimulate a reflection on the relationship between Architecture and Music. Primordial elements like the womb and platonic solids, with their interpretations and transformations, feed the concept of the project.

“

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Architecture and music have always been my main interests. During my personal investigation of design approaches I came to realize how close these two forms of expression are. Main concepts in one field, assume significant meaning within the other: form, structure, rhythm, tone and so on. Music, as sequences of sound and silence, embodies my vision of Architecture: harmonic sequences of full and empty, closed volumes and open spaces, light and shadow, evolving in a continuous loop. Both fields have the capacity to stimulate all five senses in a Copernican way, the human being the center point. Giacomo Garziano

GG-loop is an architectural practice established 2014 in Amsterdam by Giacomo Garziano. The office works within an international network, deriving its strength from an interdisciplinary approach. We work on different scales, ranging from urban planning to Furniture design.
