A new $30 million recreation center and fieldhouse is presently under construction on Western’s campus.

Western State Colorado University, the highest four-year institution of higher learning in the United States at 7,703 feet above sea level, opened its doors to students 102 years ago this fall and celebrated a century of educating educators two academic years ago. Western is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, with academic programs that take advantage of the natural laboratory that surrounds campus. The college has the only college-based Mountain Rescue Team in the nation and is consistently ranked by National Geographic and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine as one of the top colleges for students to experience outdoor recreation. Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain are both within an hour drive of campus for winter sports, and Hartman Rocks features a range of activites in the summer. The City of Gunnison hosted the start of the “Queen’s Stage” of the USA Pro Cycling Tour, which several international cycling experts called one of the toughest stages to receive certification. The Mountaineers have maintained one of the top small college athletic programs in the nation, with the fourthhighest average in the history of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. With 89 RMAC championships, 105 individual national championships and 15 national team championships, the Mountaineers have been building “Champions Out of Thin Air” since the college opened in 1911. The programs have maintained one of the top graduation rates in Division II when compared to the student body, with several programs outpacing the national average many times over.

BASKETBALL

Built in 1951 and renovated several times since, Paul Wright Gym boasts a capacity of 1,800 spectators. At 7,728 feet above sea level, the facility is the highest collegiate gym in the world. In 1960, the current swimming pool was added to the facility. In 1965, the wrestling room was added on the east side to help support the back-toback college division national championship teams of 1963 and 1964. In 1998, a major 40,000 square foot renovation was completed that added a 2,500 square foot weight room and a locker facility for visiting teams and the Western State student body. Along with the south addition, six classrooms were included that allowed the Recreation and Exercise Science Department to conduct all its classes in one building. During the 1998 renovation, the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Room was completed with meeting facilities and trophy cases. In 2008, a new gym floor and retractable baskets were installed. New bleachers were installed in 2005. The facility is currently undergoing a major renovation

as a Rec Center and Field House is being added to the southwest portion of the building. The facility will feature a regular 200-meter track for collegiate and high school meets, expanded office areas for the Mountaineer athletic department, a new weight training facility, an additional training room, a new High Altitude Performance Lab and a student recreation facility on the south end of the building. The project is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2014. The building is named after Paul W. Wright, who spent 38 years as a professor, coach and administrator at Western State. He also served as judge and mayor in Gunnison and was instrumental in establishing skiing as an NCAA sport.

MIKE MOSKOWITZ

BASKETBALL

Head Coach Michael Moskowitz enters his seventh year leading the Mountaineer program. Over his tenure at Western State Colorado University, the Mountaineer program has been on a steady and consistent incline towards success on and off the court. “Our grade sheet undoubtedly is measured by the type of young men we produce once they have come through our program,” Moskowitz said. “Winning on the court is a byproduct of developing character and expectations that have nothing to do with being a basketball player.” Prior to arriving in Gunnison, Moskowitz served as an assistant at two fellow RMAC institutions, (Mesa State 99-00 and Adams State 00-04). In 2004 he was named the head coach at Si Tanka University where he led the Eagles to an appearance in the conference tournament after going 10-17. In 2005 he was the top assistant on Team USA which competed in the Maccabi games in Israel. While at Si Tanka University, Moskowitz led the Eagles to their best record in six years and an appearance in the DAC-10 Conference tournament. Moskowitz coached two all-conference players while at Si Tanka University, one being Manual Guzman, a starter on the Dominican Republic National Team.

of 2007, and then head coach a year later. Moskowitz is a regular speaker and presenter at a number of camps and clinics in Colorado. Moskowitz also published an article “Let’s be Clever” in the May 2007 issue of Scholastic’s Coach and Athletic Director.

During his tenure at Adams State University (2000-2004), Moskowitz severed in the top assistant role for head coach Larry Mortensen. All four of those years in which Moskowitz served this role, the Grizzly’s appeared in the RMAC Shootout. Moskowitz recruited and coached a number of student athletes that received either RMAC All-Academic or all-conference accolades.

Moskowitz has 14 years of experience in the Rocky Mountain region. His familiarity with high school and junior college coaches makes him one of the top recruiters in the region. He believes in instilling strong character and passionate individuals into his program whose personal goals are out weighted by those of the team’s accomplishments.

Moskowitz served as a full-time professor in the Exercise and Sport Science department at WSCU in the Spring 2006. Then after one year in the top assistant position with the men’s basketball program, Moskowitz was named interim head coach in the spring

Moskowitz received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and in 2003 and earned a master’s degree in exercise science from Adams State College. His wife Katie and their two sons, Myles and Elliot, reside in Gunnison.

MEN’S ASSISTANT COACHES

TANNER STILLWELL ASSISTANT COACH Tanner Stillwell begins his second year at Western State and his first as a full-time assistant for the men’s basketball program. Stillwell grew up in Steamboat Springs Colorado and played basketball for Coach Kelly Meek from 2003-2007 at Steamboat Springs High School. Upon high school graduation Tanner enrolled at Colorado State University and graduated in 2012 with a degree in history, a minor in business, and a Colorado teaching license. During his last semester at CSU Stillwell student taught at Fort Collins High School where he was also an assistant with the basketball team. His responsibilities, this season with the basketball team, are numerous. As a second year coach he tries to bring energy and enthusiasm to everything he does and be an “energy giver” to the Western program.

JOHN McCARTHY ASSISTANT COACH John McCarthy is in his 22nd year as an assistant coach for the Mountaineers. A Western alumnus, “Coach Mac” began his time as an assistant to Hall of Fame Head Coach Jay Helman. During his tenure as an assistant, he has been on the bench for over 500 games and has been fortunate enough to have coached Western’s RMAC Championship team, 31 players that have garnered RMAC post season honors, and two players who have gone on to become members of the Western State Hall of Fame. Prior to his involvement with Mountaineer basketball, McCarthy served as the basketball coach at Battle Mountain High School in Eagle-Vail, Colorado where he left as the Huskies all time winningest coach. McCarthy is a retired history teacher from Gunnison High School where he was the department chair and taught Advanced Placement History courses. During his career, he was recognized on several occasions as an outstanding educator including as a recipient of the Dan Tredway Memorial Excellence in Teaching Award and 2010 Colorado VFW Teacher of the Year Award. McCarthy is married to Western alumna Melanie Torpey, a retired Physical Education teacher and gymnastics coach with the Gunnison Watershed School District.

KELLY MEEK ASSISTANT COACH Kelly Meek begins his sixth season in 2013 as an assistant coach for his daughter, Katie Moskowitz and his fifth season as an assistant with the men’s basketball program for his son-in-law, Mike Moskowitz. Meek spent 36 years as a high school coach, including 34 as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Steamboat Springs High School. With the Sailors, he won 44 league, district or regional championships and 20 preseason tournament championships. Meek’s teams won the Western Slope League championship in eight of his last 11 seasons, including three

undefeated campaigns in the last four seasons. In that span, the Sailors won 30 consecutive league games to set a school and league record. Meek finished with 544 wins alltime at Steamboat Springs which ranks him third all-time among Colorado high school coaches and second all-time among coaches at one school. Meek entered the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011. Meek has been married for 41 years to Karen Meek.

BASKETBALL Van Girard begins his second season at Western State Colorado University in 2013.

Before coming to Western, Girard spent 24 seasons at the helm of the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball program. The winningest women’s basketball coach in the history of Cal State Dominguez Hills, Girard put his trademark stamp of hardnosed pressure defense to go along with an up-tempo style of play on the Carson campus. Girard took over the reigns at Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1988. He turned the Toros into one of the top NCAA Division II programs on the West Coast. He led CSUDH to three total CCAA titles including a 2009 title, three runner-up finishes (including the 2004-05 campaign) and five 3rd-place finishes in one of the strongest conferences in the country. He also guided the Toros to the CCAA Tournament 10 times while earning five NCAA West Region playoff berths, including the 2008-09 season in which the Toros lost a 66-65 heartbreaking buzzer-beater to perennial power UC San Diego. Girard’s record speaks for itself. He is atop CSUDH’s all-time coaching record list, compiling a 302-350 mark en route to being named the CCAA Coach of the Year five times, including a stretch of three-consecutive years (1994-96). On March 3, 2007, Girard achieved his milestone 250th win in an 83-56 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay. Girard likes to play a very up-tempo style of basketball while incorporating his trademark man-to-man pressure defense. The opposition knows to expect a swarming high-pressure defense and a creative offense when they face Girard’s squad. Known as a teacher of fundamentals, Girard has coached one All-American, seven All-West Region players, three CCAA Conference MVPs and 42 all-conference players. Prior to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Girard served as Assistant Athletics Director at Lynwood High School and the girl’s varsity basketball coach for ten years. During that span, he compiled an incredible 230-48 career record for an amazing winning percentage of .827. In creating a dynasty at Lynwood, Girard led his team to 10-straight playoff berths, seven-consecutive San Gabriel Valley Conference championships, two CIF championship appearances and two Southern Regional State playoff championships, with 1986 culminating in a CIF title. During his tenure at Lynwood HS, he twice was honored as the

VERA JO BUSTOS ASSISTANT COACH Vera Jo Bustos is in her second year as an assistant coach at Western State Colorado University. Bustos spent the 2011-12 season playing professional basketball in Thessaloniki, Greece for Apollon Kalamarias. She averaged 11.2 points per game and 4.9 rebounds in 21 games as a rookie.

Los Angeles Times “4A Coach of the Year.” Even more impressive, Girard was honored as the California and CIF “Coach of the Year” in 1986. Fifteen players under his tutelage earned NCAA Division I or Division II athletic scholarships at the collegiate level. In a March 5, 2004, ceremony held at the Pyramid on the campus of Cal State Long Beach, Girard forever was immortalized for his achievements at the prep level. Along with Southern California coaching notables Ron Palmer (LB Poly), Gary Prestesator (San Dimas HS) and Cliff Warren (El Segundo, Rolling Hills, Redondo and Peninsula High Schools), the CSULB alumnus was inducted into the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA) Hall of Fame for the legacy he left at Lynwood HS. While at CSUDH, Girard worked closely with the local Boys & Girls clubs providing free coaches and team clinics. He also worked closely with the City of Carson Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the local Carson-Gardena YMCA in providing more opportunities for girls basketball. Girard is a 1977 graduate of Long Beach State, earning his bachelor’s degree in History. Previously, Bustos was a stand-out basketball player at Adams State from 2007-to-2011. During her time in Alamosa, Colo., Bustos not only became the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,859 points but became the school’s all-time leader in minutes played (3,805) and games started (105). In her four years, Bustos averaged 17.5 points per game and set records for most points in a game (36), most three-pointers in a game (8) and most points in a half (27). A stellar player at West Las Vegas High School, Bustos owns the school record for most rebounds (935) most points (2,098), most assists (536), most steals (331) and games started (125).

BASKETBALL

The Mountaineer Athletic Association (MAA) is celebrating 50 years working with Western Athletics in 2013-14. The first mention of the MAA can be traced back to the days of Head Football Coach O. Kay Dalton with the creation of the Century Club in the 1963-64 academic year. For just $100 each year, members could enjoy all the benefits or supporting the Mountaineers and the various sport programs that existed in the 1960s. The Century Club maintained its current membership level - $100 a year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; until inflation and the need for additional funds encouraged the creation of different membership levels. The Century Club was renamed the Mountaineer Century Club in the 1989-90 academic year, and then adopted the current Mountaineer Athletic Association title in 1995. The MAA corporate partnership program started a year later to create additional means for businesses to become involved at a larger level and to create additional marketing avenues for those businesses. From the original 32 members in the 1996, the corporate partnership program has grown to 68 local and regional businesses and corporations in 2012-13. In 2001, the Sam Boyd Crab Feed, Auction Dinner and Casino Night was started and has raised nearly $280,000 in 12 years. More than $29,000 was raised for student-athletes last year. Last year, more than $302,000 was raised for the scholarship needs of Western State Colorado University student-athletes with the support of 339 corporate and individual members. Over the past 50 years, the MAA has raised millions of dollars for Western student-athletes, making it one of the most succesful booster clubs in the nation. Among public NCAA Division II institutions with football, the Mountaineers continue to be among the national leaders in private support, in part from the generosity of the MAA members. The original charter members of the Century Club listed in a 1964 football game program.

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the MAA, first-time and long-term members alike will receive benefits throughout 2013-14. Both individual MAA members and corporate partners have the opportunity to join this exclusive club, honoring the Golden Anniversary of the MAA. To become a member of the Mountaineer 50-Year Club, 2012-13 members gain access by increasing their donation by $50 or more. If any new individual member joins the MAA at the $500 level or higher, they will also receive membership in the 50-Year Club. For corporate partners wanting to join the 50-Year Club, 2012-13 corporate partners must increase their MAA donation by $500 or more. For any new MAA corporate partner to gain access to the 50-Year Club, they must join at the $2,500 or greater level.

MOUNTAINEERS - A poem by John Nelson Up to the peaks and the pinnacles, high above the Black Canyon’s floor, through passes on trails where the peregrine sails and huge hearted eagles soar, comes men and women made for the mountains, athletes of prowess and flair, to a place with a school where the elements rule, and champions are made from thin air. And here the strong must grow stronger, and the weakest must get tough or die. In nature’s rule the fittest pull through, in this land of the bull elk’s battle cry. And, the fittest and toughest will thrive here, to summit peaks and podiums in stride on a mountain’s supply of endurance and try, and the Mountaineer spirit and pride. Western State Colorado University is the proud home of the Mountaineers. Where high achievers abound and champions crowned form a legacy passed through the years. And, you may join them if you are up to the challenge. But, cast off your fears and all doubt. When you learn to believe, you can “over achieve.” That’s what “Mountaineer Magic” is about. Then when you’ve put out the work and the effort, and you are sweating at twenty below, but you don’t think twice of rare air and the ice, then fitness is something you know. That’s when that magic consumes you. When you are winning at dreams that come true, look west to the sky and contemplate why. Then give the mountains and University their due! Up among the peaks and the pinnacles, you’ll feel blessed that you came to be here. But, know from the start it takes a mountain of heart, for the honor to be called Mountaineer!
