Three Voices by Tibor Wehner

The present exhibition at Rearte Gallery in Vienna features a team of three artists, who have been building up their art lives embedded in differing art traditions in various historical and social surroundings inspired by concomitantly alternate motivations. Ulrike Chladek, born in Vienna and having worked in Austria for several decades represents the West; Abd A. Masoud, who was born in Amman of Jordan and has lived and worked in Vienna since 1984 acts as the ambassador of the art of the faraway Orient, while Géza Németh, coming from Budapest, Hungary and having played an active role in the art life in his home country as well as on the American continent embodies the specific fate of the Eastern-European artist. Rooted in their specific backgrounds, the art works they create reflect different intentions, attitudes, and forms of expression, their answers to the challenges of so-called reality are basically different and unmistakenly original. Ulrike Chladek’s minimalist plastic world is guided by the rules of geometry and construction. No matter how different issues of space, volume and form her massive stone sculptures or light and airy paper creations address, they are all brief and concise expressions wrapped in abstractions. The graphic and plastic pieces, as well as the paintings Abd A. Masoud creates, are closely related to the iconographic traditions of the Orient. The calligraphic pieces whose contents and connotations are difficult to decipher by the European viewer have their appeal in their graphic sensitivity, the beauty of detail and their relic nature. Having left the world of photo applications and digitally created images behind, Géza Németh is represented by his new creative period of pure painterly methods and means. His expressive-surrealistic compositions open up the spheres of reality and imagination, memory, and apparition simultaneously thus being the sources of enhanced tension. Seen at the same place, the plastic pieces aiming at the essence and clear formulas by Ulrike Chladek, the calligraphic pieces immensed in Oriental mysteriousness by Abd A. Masoud and the pictures balancing on the border between reality and transcendence by Géza Németh offer an exciting diagnosis of the more and more globalised art in the 21st century that integrates countless forces and impulses while striving to safeguard its original values as well. Tibor Wehner (1948, Sopron, Hungary) After studies in adult education, library and art history he worked as museologist, gallery art manager and civil servant responsible for art affairs. Has been authoring several essays and books on art.

About the gallery In 2008 Helga and Abd A. Masoud started Rearte Gallery and turned the dilapidated old house to such a gem. Entering the house, we find a completely different world than the one we have just left. Abd A. Masoud succeeded in appealing all senses with its Rearte Gallery and only thus can explain that the visitors find simultaneously a soothing and stimulating atmosphere and with each breath, more of the spirit of this house will be caught. Rearte Gallery is a place to meet different people from all over the world, which combines their love and pleasure for art. Abd A. Masoud allows them all in a unique way to exhibit their work at this exquisite place. Rearte Gallery was launched 2008 as a non-profit private initiative in order to give chance for known and unknown artists to present themselves in an exclusive and representative atmosphere. Since then the Gallery dedicate itself supporting young emerging artists but also to connect artists from different countries and assist them to show their work in-group exhibitions with other artists from the region (Austria). Since the establishment of Rearte Gallery 67 events were organized in order to promote multinational exchange and artistic diversity. 343 artists from all five continents have participated in exhibitions in the gallery or in the venues of its cooperation partners. The gallery presents different directions in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography and installation. All projects are designed to international dialogue and communication between artists from different cultures. This makes the Rearte Gallery to an active and important social factor in the Viennese art scene. Every year Rearte Gallery participated in the “Festival of the districts.” In cooperation with the cultural institutes of the respective embassies, a program is organized in order to present the culture of a country through its artistic activities. The events offer intercultural encounters which aims to bring visitors closer to the country in all its facets. So far, Jordan, Hungary, Egypt and Bulgaria were in the focus. Under the slogan “Having a place to meet different people from all over the world combining their love and with the pleasure for art” on 8th November 2013 Rearte Gallery celebrated its five-year anniversary with a group exhibition of thirty foreign artists (Austria, Jordan, Iraq,USA, Spain, Cyprus, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Japan, Lebanon, South Africa, Bulgaria, Slovakia) who had already presented their artwork (painting, photography, sculpture, works on paper, wood and ceramic)in the gallery since its establishment. Rearte Gallery believes that art knows no borders, no barriers, no religions, and no age or sex limitation. Art is there to build bridges, which connect nations and melt the cultural diversity in one pot to create a universal language - the language of art.
