Lucky Strike in S.F.: Bowled over Carolyne Zinko Sunday, March 18, 2012

It’s not your Midwestern cousin’s bowling alley. Lucky Strike, at Third and King, has bowling lanes - 12, in fact. But the stylish joint is a gastro pub and funhouse, bowling optional. That’s according to its owner, East Coast native and Southern California resident Steven Foster, who owns 21 Lucky Strikes nationwide and who opened his latest March 8 in SoMa. Foster has a longtime affinity for the Bay Area, where he learned Transcendental Meditation in Berkeley on Aug. 2, 1969. “To me, San Francisco is the coolest city in the United States,” he said, as crews put the finishing touches on the facility across from AT&T Park, in a building that once housed Borders Books. “It’s my spiritual home.” But man (and woman) does not live by spirit alone. He enlisted the help of Ray Azoulay, who owns the famed antiques and curiosities boutique Obsolete, in Venice (Los Angeles County), to ensure that the place reflected a San Francisco aesthetic. It promises to be a happening date-night spot with activities to break the ice, and has design flourishes aplenty. They include floor-to-ceiling glass windows; polished concrete floors; a 40-foot zinc bar; an Einstein room with pictures of Albert Einstein, pool tables and trivia-based video games; a photo booth with dress-up props; and amber light fixtures lending a warm glow. Baseball fans, take note: San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian Wilson is an investor, and lane 12 in the VIP room ($500 an hour, plus food and beverages) has been renamed Lane 38 (his jersey number) in his honor. Because San Franciscans are foodies, Foster changed the chain’s standard menu, enlisting chef Bob Lynn, formerly of the Houston’s chain, to create nibbles that range from sushi, tacos and six varieties of sliders, to french fries cut from fresh potatoes with five dipping sauces. Azoulay, a former design director for Liz Claiborne and Macy’s, had never worked as an interior design consultant before. Foster was a client for 14 years, but Azoulay didn’t know he owned bowling alleys until Foster asked him to help. Their collaboration, said Foster, “was organic - superfluid, to borrow from Einstein.” “The idea,” said Azoulay, “was to mix the vocabulary in this space. It’s not modern, it’s not industrial, and it’s not contemporary. It’s not formulaic. But it’s all relevant.” Milwaukee should be so lucky.

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW With more than 50 million people – 20% of the country’s population – participating annually, bowling is a $4 billion industry according to an “Overview of the Bowling Industry” by the premier bowling industry research company, Sandy Hansell & Associates, Inc. These figures make bowling the largest indoor participation sport in America and help make it the largest participation sport worldwide, one that is “clearly gaining in popularity.” A recent study by Market Facts, Inc. found that 70% of bowlers hold white-collar jobs, 60% have attended college and 95% have graduated high school. And, compared with the U.S. Census Bureau estimate of annual U.S. household income of $48,700, “bowling households” have an average income of $60,300 per year, according to American Sports Data, Inc. The bowling industry is attractive not only because of the vast number of consumers, but also because of the quality of their demographics.

While these statistics are promising, they are limited by a universe of mainly traditional bowling alleys – harshly lit facilities in poor locations with sub-par food. Many locations are in rural areas or are outdated centers. Lucky Strike has broken this paradigm. It has pioneered the field of “boutique bowling” – upscale hip bowling and entertainment. By offering quality food, dramatic ambience, a high energy bar, a private lounge and a sophisticated A/V system programmed with sports, media and art, Lucky Strike has extended its appeal beyond the typical bowling guest demographic. As a result, Lucky Strike is consistently recognized in the media as the leading operator of this new generation of bowling lounges (See enclosed press package), and on a per lane basis generates revenue and profit numbers well in excess of the traditional bowling center.

OUR STORY In 2003 veteran restaurant and entertainment entrepreneurs Steven and Gillian Foster and Kevin Troy conceived the idea of Lucky Strike. Inspired by the notion of bringing people together in a high energy, fashionable environment, they created Lucky Strike to be a paradigm breaking entertainment venue featuring bowling as its primary social draw. In designing Lucky Strike, the Foster’s found inspiration in “Hollywood Star Lanes,” a legendary bowling alley (the location for “The Big Lebowski”) that had served the Hollywood community for forty-three years. With this facility being demolished to make way for a school, the Foster’s purchased its vintage fixtures including the iconic “Hollywood” sign and neon blue stars created by the Coen Brothers for the movie. They also used lane seven as the bar in Hollywood. By marrying elegant nostalgia and modern technology, the Foster’s and Troy gave birth to “America’s first bowling lounge.” The combination of warm tones, leather sofas, original artwork, intimate bar, and private party space makes this venue unique, dramatic, and inviting. Enhancing the experience is the food. The exciting menu was created exclusively for Lucky Strike by celebrated Corporate Executive chef, Bill Starbuck, Vice President of Hollywood’s premiere catering company, “Along Came Mary,” well known as the caterer of choice for such prestigious events as the Emmy’s, the Grammy’s and many of Hollywood’s A-list movie premiers. This innovative and premium quality cuisine is a centerpiece for thousands of parties Lucky Strike hosts each year. These events range from corporate parties, celebrity charity events, wrap parties, Bar Mitzvahs, to birthday parties for all ages. Whether attending an event, having drinks and hors d’oeuvres, dining with a few friends, lunching with co-workers or entertaining clients, Lucky Strike’s menu continues to surprise and delight millions of guests each year. The first Lucky Strike debuted in the heart of Hollywood in May 2003, a befitting tribute to its inspirational roots. Today there are twenty locations across the country including one location in Toronto, Canada. Lucky Strike has proven to be a fabulous multi-day part anchor for entertainment districts and malls across the country. Its broad appeal has made it a vibrant cultural destination in each of its host communities.
