Gracie Jiu-Jitsu / MMA Academy Offers classes in BBJ (Brazilian Jui-Jitsu) MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Classes for kids, juniors, adults male & female

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can sucessfully defend themselves againsy a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique; most notably, by applying joint-locks and choke holds to defeat your opponent. Braziliian Jiu-Jitsu can be trained for self defence, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Classes taught by Stephen Coll and Brian Coyle both have purple belts under Rilion Gracie. Brian has a black belt in traditional JiuJitsu (World Jiu-Jitsu federation) under Sensei Gabriel McAeer.

Classes are held in a friendly environment to learn new skills, meet new people while improving personal fitness, flexibility, co-ordination, balance and confidence.

D

eveloping a healthy lifestyle takes a bit of planning, a lot of people say that they do not have time to exercise, while this may be true in some cases, the fact is anyone no matter how busy they are could actually find the time if they prioritised and seen an exercise routine as an important tool in improving their overall health.

Not finding the time can be a good excuse to not doing any exercise at all; usually if a person can find an excuse then it makes them feel better about not doing it. Why wait until you have a serious health problem before you begin to exercise or until your doctor tells you that you must. Exercise and a good healthy diet will go a long way in keeping the body and mind in good condition and can be

a good preventative measure to see off any disease.

Exercise

If you have not exercised before then you must start very gently by maybe going for short brisk walks every other day and then increasing that over a period of time. It is important to realise that physical fitness and health are not the same. Too much regular practice of Western-type of exercises such as weight training or jogging may make one fit but it does not necessarily make one healthy. Soft internal exercises like Yoga or Tai Chi are good to balance the external Western type of exercise with the internal, the hard with the soft, the yin with the yang; this is the very principle and philosophy of Chinese medicine. Sadly on most accounts this is neglected. Don’t forget to also include exercises that calm the mind. Meditation and treatments like acupuncture are very good for clearing

09 Health stress out of the mind and body. A healthy mind is a healthy body. Acupuncture combined with herbal teas is also very good in reducing cravings for food and also to speed up the metabolism leading to a reduction in weight.

Food and Diet

Food is very important for your health, eating the right amount is also important, but more importantly is eating healthy food, just because you eat a large portion of vegetables every day does not mean that that food is healthy, by that I mean is it organic? One of the huge advantages of organic foods is that they haven’t been doused in pesticides. Organic farms ban artificial pesticides. In the UK alone, 31,000 tonnes of pesticides are blasted on to farmlands every year, and 25% of food carries residues of these chemicals, created to kill pests and weeds. Non-organic fruit and veg. is covered in the stuff and it won’t all wash off. Pesticide residues turn up, not just on fruit and

vegetables, but in bread, baby food and other products. Did you know that if you consumed an average apple you would be eating over 30 pesticides, even after you have washed it? The quality of food has definitely gone down compared to the way it was back in the 50s and 60s. How can we help to change this situation? Well we can start by sourcing organic produce whenever out shopping, organic food is now less expensive than it used to be because more and more farmers are changing to organic growing and this brings the price down. The more we support the growth of organic food the cheaper it will become and eventually the nasty chemical growers will wither up and go away, they will only stick around if we keep supporting them. In Inishowen and Derry North West Organic (http://www. nworganic.com/) delivers organic produce right to your doorstep and you can order online, they are a great source and service to the community. It’s all out there you just have to source it.

Attic

Conversions Converting attic space can provide a relatively low cost means of increasing useable space, relative to the more arduous options of extending, or moving to a larger building.

W

aste of space in an attic space is a huge missed opportunity. It’s a pity that so many houses built today don’t have attics that can be converted later. That to me is a missed opportunity in practically all of the 60,000 or so houses a year being built in Ireland. This is certainly typically the case with houses built by spec builders and developers, who don’t provide the opportunity for subsequent development. When building a new house, building in such a way that the attic can be converted adds only minor costs, and will be a great help when the owner decides to convert the attic, in terms of overcoming planning, reducing costs, and complying with the building regulations. There’s very little cost in doing that basic work, such as providing the headroom, floor structure, and somewhere for a stairs to go later, that can be designed to comply with fire regulations. These are basic things that are missed in house building all the time. From a sustainability point of view, we need to provide houses that can adapt over time, and can accommodate the needs of families, so the life cycle, or use of that building can go on. If an attic is convertible, it allows the possibility of two families living in a house, such as with elderly parents living on the lower level, and a young family occupying the first floor and the attic space. That adaptability is typically missed. However if you have a house, and there is an opportunity to convert the attic space, it makes so much sense. It’s the first space to look for if you want to expand.

From a sustainability point of view, we need to provide houses that can adapt over time, and can accommodate the needs of families, so the life cycle, or use of that building can go on.

If you look at the other options, you either move to a bigger house, or build another house, or you extend the existing house. The problem with extending, unless you’ve got a garage you can convert, is that usually the extensions are going to compromise the house in terms of daylight, and in terms of enjoyment of the garden for the existing rooms, because those rooms become compromised by extensions. Within a typical plot, whether it’s a semi-d, an existing house in the country or an older

13 problem. When you’re carrying out this work in an existing residential area, how do you get the light and the benefit of the views and ventilation through windows without taking from your neighbours. The other issue regarding daylight relates to windows at the front, which do require planning permission, as do any material changes to the front of a house.

Daylight When thinking about daylight, and windows, it’s important to avoid compromising the privacy of adjoining neighbours. There is of course the advantage of an extra view from a higher point, but one has to consider the private aspects of overlooking other people’s properties. This is only an issue at the back of houses, or at the sides. There can be ways around this, with skylight windows, because of their higher mounting and aspect, which don’t cause this

The big advantage with a roof is that you have the hemisphere of the sky above you, so you have huge opportunities of very good daylight to bring to that space. This can lead to real solar benefits. Predominantly these windows should be south facing, to get the passive solar benefits into that space, rather than north facing, which would lead to losses out rather than gains in. Larger windows on the south roof slope, if possible should be opted for. At the same time, during the summer months you have to avoid the roof over heating.

F

or many a bride and groom, weddings involve more than simply booking a banquet hall for the gala reception and ceremony. Coordinating by using a wedding checklist makes the most sense, allowing you to checklist your items and keep all of your wedding planning details in order. You have found the perfect life partner. Now, plan your perfect wedding. Regardless of where you decide to have your wonderful day, the event will call for a significant amount of planning along with ideas and information.

Tying the knot?

Planning a wedding involves many things, including invitation ideas, bridesmaid dresses, attire for mother of the bride, not least selecting the right bridal flower bouquets. Most importantly, you’ll need to make your wedding fun and fabulous. Every wedding has a budget, be it a no-hold extravaganza or a low-key smaller affair. And both can be a beautiful fun day for everyone. Most brides and grooms feel overwhelmed in the process of wedding planning. Begin by creating a personalized month-by-month checklist with an approximate wedding date. Add all meetings related to the wedding to your checklist so you don’t forget.

Most important of all, the wedding day is about both of you bonding together in a lifetime partnership with each other.

The reception party is where all your guests come together to celebrate your new life as a married couple. It should reflect and complement the formality of your ceremony. The reception site should be selected depending on its availability, price, proximity to the ceremony site, and the number of people it can accommodate. The entertainment you choose will depend on the type of wedding ideas planned - From the classical stringed quartet to the full on wedding band. Writing your own vows is a good idea if you want to give the ceremony a personal touch. Don’t shy away from this as each one of us is a sucker for romance; and the vows will add an intimacy to the ceremony. The dress will be the centre of attention for the whole wedding. The perfect dress should make the bride feel and look beautiful. A well-fitted dress is flattering to the figure. But most importantly it should be comfortable to wear all day long. Take recommendations from friends and people who have recently got married. You can always cut costs on the big day without compromising on style and atmosphere. You can organise it yourself, with friends and family to help with things like the video camera and driving guests from the ceremony to the after party.

wedding You may also consider hiring a wedding planner. Given the fact that most brides are working professionals, finding time to compare vendors and review deals can be near impossible. A wedding planner is a consultant providing professional advice to guide you through your wedding plans. They will understand your needs and make a wedding which reflects your style, taste and personality, all within your desired budget. Some consultants offer end-to-end wedding planning services, while others offer a-la-carte services for more budget-conscious couples. Create A Warm, Romantic Retreat with these Bedroom Decorating Ideas Although this page is focused on bedroom decorating ideas for romantics, many of the concepts can be used to create the mood you want for any bedroom style. Your bedroom is probably the most important room in your home. After all, it’s the last thing you see before you fall asleep and the first thing you see when you wake up. And when you’re not sleeping, it can be a hide-away to read, listen to music, or be with someone special... which brings me to an important question for you. As you now search for bedroom ideas, have you already determined how you will use your bedroom and the furniture and furnishings required to make it an inviting

oasis?... Do your bedroom decorating ideas address storage space, seating, furniture size, etc.? Of course when I think of bedroom decorating ideas, relaxation and romance are the first thoughts that come to mind. For me, a romantic bedroom has a way of pleasing all the senses and washing away life’s stresses. Bedrooms painted an earth-toned color and has a diamond pattern stenciled on one wall to give it texture. The sheer panels over the bed and 6 ft x 9 ft window add an airy and elegant look. You’ll obviously want to decorate your bedroom in a style that suits your taste and preferences. However, remember that your bed will be the focal point of your bedroom, so go all out and make it as luxurious as possible... Try some of the decorating ideas in the photograph as well as some of the ideas below to create the romantic sanctuary you’ve always dreamed about:

for special evenings, your bedroom decorating ideas should include romantic candlelight.

1. Paint the room in a warm neutral colour. Consider adding texture and depth to the walls with faux painting, stenciling, or rubber stamping. I think rubber stamping is the easiest and fastest of these decorative painting techniques. There are thousands of stamp designs and the results can be very impressive. Faux finishes are also quite popular, and with good reason. They add depth and texture to your walls. 2. Cover your bed with quality cotton sheets in solid colours, prints, or patterns that reflect your mood. Top your bed with a comforter, duvet, or feather bed to add drama to your decorative style. 3. Nothing kills romance faster than clutter... So find appropriate storage spaces for papers, spare change, and other excess. If you have a small bedroom, eliminating clutter will make your bedroom look larger. If you could use some tools for getting clutter under control.

4. Select the right bed and other furniture. Don’t make the mistake of getting a bed that is too big for the room. And rather than buying the standard chest of drawers, why not try a large armoire. Don’t think you have to buy an entire matching bedroom set. You’ll want plenty of space to move around. 5. No bed can be deemed romantic without lots of pillows. You’ll want to use a mix of pillow sizes and shapes. Start by propping two or more of the large, square-shaped, European-sized pillows against the headboard. They will look nicely behind rectangular pillows. Add texture and dimension by using various shaped small pillows covered in different weaves, finishes, laces, and tapestry. 6. The lighting in your cosy bedroom should generally be low wattage. Consider using a threeway bulb in your side table lamps if you occasionally read in bed. And

piece of natural material (such as a small cotton handkerchief) and pop it into the tumble dryer along with the bed linen.

7. Lay an area rug on your bedroom floor. The rug will add extra richness to your room. I placed an area rug at an angle, with a part of it slid underneath the foot of my bed. The effect is quite dramatic. (Note: It doesn’t matter if your floors are hard or carpeted. This bedroom decorating idea is equally effective.)

10. Remember that layers of soothing colors and interesting textures are what give a room life and character. So don’t be afraid to experiment. If you still aren’t sure how or where to get started making over your bedroom, you should consider Awaken Your Interior Designer.

Don’t forget that speeding is the No. 1 reason new drivers lose control of their vehicles.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR PREVENTING TEENAGE ROAD COLLISIONS & FATALITIES MARY CLINTON A-CEART Email:mary@a-ceart.com Web: www.a-ceart.com

1. DEVELOPE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE ABOUT DRIVING, REMEMBER, DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT!

Many teen crashes aren’t caused by a lack of skills or knowledge. It’s often an issue of attitude, behaviour and immaturity. Be sure to develop and practice a responsible driving attitude.

2. GET AS MUCH SUPERVISED DRIVING PRACTICE AS POSSIBLE

Work with your parents to develop a schedule so they can supervise your driving. Practice driving in different conditions so you know what to expect in inclement weather, heavy traffic, urban and rural situations and night driving. This will give you more experience and will increase your confidence behind the wheel. Commit to supervised, driving practice for at least six months so that you can become familiar and comfortable with the road before you take the driver’s licence test.

Realize that driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine or other drugs is clearly dangerous.

4. UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL

Drinking alcohol or using drugs when driving is totally unacceptable. Not only are drug use and teen alcohol use illegal - they also can impair your senses. Even if you’ve consumed only one drink or smoked one joint, there is a chemical effect on your brain that can affect judgment and reaction time. Realize that driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine or other drugs is clearly dangerous. It can cost you your license - or your life or, the life of someone else that is not yours to take!

5. LIMIT THE NUMBER OF FRIENDS IN THE CAR 3. MAKE SURE TO “CLICK IT”

Get into the habit of wearing your safety belt all the time. There’s no question; safety belt use saves lives.

If you are a new driver, limit the number of passengers in the car while you are driving. Your risk of a fatal crash increases with every additional passenger.

25 Motoring 6. STICK TO DAYTIME DRIVING TILL YOU’VE GAINED EXPERIENCE

Stick to daytime driving when you first get started. Your risk of a fatal crash is three times higher at night per mile driven than in the day.

7. KEEP IT SLOW AND SAFE FOR STARTERS

Stay away from fast-moving, heavy traffic until you’ve had plenty of supervised practice. Once you’re more comfortable with driving, you can gradually take on more difficult situations, such as Motorway driving and major urban areas. Don’t forget that speeding is the No 1 reason new drivers lose control of their vehicles.

8. TRAIN FOR BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS

Heavy Rainstorms, snow, sleet and icy roads can be very scary and dangerous (I’ve had plenty experience in those situations, as I worked on the road as a Rep for a few companies for many years) even more so

when you’re an inexperienced driver. Get as much supervised practice on the road in bad weather conditions as you can.

9. PUT YOUR MOBILE CALLS ON HOLD

Don’t get into the habit of talking on your Mobile phone while you drive. Use a Mobile phone for emergency situations only. If it’s necessary to use your phone, pull safely over to the side of the road.

10. DRIVE A SAFE CAR

The kind of vehicle you drive is as important as the way you drive. Get the best advice from several reputable car dealers before you purchase. If you’re thinking of getting your own car, look for one with high safety ratings. Insurance Companies for Road Safety also offers valuable vehicle and safety advice.

Why should I switch to electric? To enjoy the pleasure in motoring

The electric car is nothing short of a revolution and it is a particularly gentle one. Using a combustion engine vehicle pollutes the environment, particularly when you accelerate or go up a slope. An electric car however, emits no CO2 whatsoever during use, nor does it produce any carcinogenic pollutants or exhaust gases that cause acid rain. What’s more, it actually benefits whenever the vehicle goes downhill or decelerates, with the kinetic energy converted into electricity to recharge the battery. The electric motor’s constant level of torque is available instantly, ensuring a more pleasurable drive without any jerky gear changes. To have a partner you can rely on. With the Renault Z.E. electric vehicle range, peace of mind is combined with intelligent energy management. The advanced navigation system found in Z.E. models allows drivers to optimise

journeys easily, and monitor energy effectively. The real-time information system: • Provides information on the current range. • Identifies the nearest recharging points and stations. • Keep informed about your status via your mobile phone, offering greater flexibility and improved time management.

Stop wasting energy!

The electric motor offers average energy efficiency of some 90%. This means 90% of the energy it consumes is used to power the vehicle. This is far superior to the 25% offered by current internal combustion engines. Renault’s new electric power units are made up of four key components: The charger, which receives the current directly from the power socket and adapts it so that it can charge the battery. •T he inverter, which converts the direct current provided by the battery into alternating current to power the motor. •T he motor, which transforms the electric

energy into kinetic energy. • The reducer, which transmits the power to the wheels. Even when you brake, the motor transforms the kinetic energy released into electricity. As a result, every time you remove your foot from the accelerator, the battery is recharged.

Enjoy the dependability of lithium-ion technology.

Lithium-ion batteries provide superior performance to any other type of battery considered for automotive use considered for automotive use. Lighter and more compact, these batteries offer two or three times more energy per kilogram than previous generations. They are also more practical, as you no longer need to wait until the battery has been totally emptied before connecting it to a power source – even for short periods. The lithium-ion cells developed by Renault have also been designed so that after six years of intense use, any drop in capacity is not noticeable to the user. The technology therefore offers the perfect solution for long-term, worry-free motoring. Source: www.renault-ze.com

Soup!

Cookery

Soups are an excellent and cheap option in current climate and made even better if you’re growing your own vegetables. I have found myself taking fat and salt out of my soups recently almost a process of weaning off salt is required. It’s worth noting when using stock cubes they already contain salt therefore do not add salt to salt! Most stock cubes will recommend 1 stock cube to 450ml of water I recommend 1 stock cube to 1 Litre of water as I believe stock should only be a back round carrier flavour and in your selection of fresh vegetables the vegetables should be the dominant flavour. Fresh stocks are excellent option but can be time consuming thus I am using stock cubes in my recipes for your convenience at home.

A hearty bowl of soup is known to lift fatigue!

Garden Carrot & Red Lentil Soup What a cheap and easy soup this is to make without feeling guilty. I have yet to serve this to someone who thinks it is nothing other than superb. Right away it’s a winner as it is Fat Free Vegetarian Soup, full of vibrancy, fibre and goodness! Any one that knows me will know that I love Lime zest in soup as it cleans your taste buds and give a lovely zesty zing. Serves: 12 portions Ingredients: 100g Onion 200g Carrots 200g Red Lentils 21/2 Lt Stock Water with 2 Vegetable Stock Cubes 1 Clove Garlic 400g Chopped Tomatoes (Tinned is perfect for this soup) Sprig Thyme 60g Tomato Puree Fresh Ground Black Pepper 1 Lime Method: Soak the lentil in cold water for about 20 minutes. Chop Onions, Carrots & Garlic. Put stock cube with the water on to heat. Add the Lentils, garlic, Onion and carrots followed by the chopped Tomato and tomato puree. Stir occasionally and add some pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. With a blender blitz the soup, return to the heat then reboil for 4-5 minutes. Just before service add some more fresh ground pepper and serve into each bowl some Lime zest and squeeze of juice.

Brian’s Tip! Serve with natural yogurt or lime juice. Chopped parsley or chives work well sprinkled on top. You may add bacon to this soup at the start also if non vegetarian.
