GET IT I PUBLISHER'S LETTER

FIRE & ICE WINTER BALL

from the publisher LEANNE HART

For me, I stopped giving a damn about these things when I was about 35, after the birth of my second child, when I realised pride and dignity were no longer part of my vocabulary — neither was a good night’s sleep but that’s another story. I was not going to let any of this BS fly with me any longer, so I stopped caring about... What she said: Gossip, drama, nastiness or rumours — pass! Someone wants to talk about you behind your back? Good, give them something to talk about! But never be worried about what they have to say. You’re worth being talked about so you must be doing something right. What he said/did: Ladies, I’m talking about exes here. Whatever happened in the past, leave it there. That man has probably already wasted more of your time than he ever deserved so he’s sure not worth wasting additional time talking about. Grudges, revenge or plotting his gruesome and painful death doesn’t ever help — believe me. What I said/did: Don’t be worried if you offend someone purely because you voiced your opinion. Don’t be worried if you only have a small circle of friends because you’re just too much for most people — their loss anyway because you’re awesome! Do what you want, when you want and never apologise for it. What someone else thinks of my body: Whether it’s a man or woman, it really doesn’t matter what someone thinks our bodies should or shouldn’t look like. Whether it’s how we dress, how much makeup we do or don’t wear, how many tattoos we have, whether we are too skinny or need to lose a few, someone else’s opinion of your body does not matter. What I can’t control: There are a lot of situations that are out of our control in life and we live life a hell of a lot more peacefully if we can learn to manage the things we can control and let go of the things we can’t. Choose your battles too, because sometimes peace is more valuable than being right. What I don’t give a damn about: Someone doesn’t like that I don’t give a damn about the above things? Oh, let me count how many damns I give about it… zero. Zero damns to give! Putting myself first, valuing my own opinion, not holding onto negative stuff and basically living a happier life is nothing to apologise for.

Top tips for being a 2017 Winter hermit Do winter right this year with Winter expert Anna Davis

Short Hair Cut & Colour Specialist

I think we can all agree that 2016 was objectively terrible. Luckily 2017 has engineered itself into the perfect climate for us all to lock ourselves away from society without any judgement or suspicion. Don’t believe me? Wrap yourself in a snuggie and read on… UBER EATS If you haven’t tried Uber Eats I truly feel sorry for you. Uber now delivers food from all of the Gold Coast’s hip hot spots and calorific cafes straight to your home, and it is dangerously good. Once upon a time takeaway food meant eating a greasy pizza with a side of shame. Nowadays I can order an ice cream sandwich on a Brioche bun straight to my house at 11pm — it’s shame with a side of fancy. Uber Eats is exactly the same as going to that hip new cafe in Nobby’s Beach but without having to deal with the queues, people in bicycle wear and the hassle of having to put on clothes. THE ‘ATHLEISURE’ TREND For those of you who don’t know,‘Athleisure’ is a growing fashion trend that makes it completely acceptable to hang out in your favourite hoodie, track pants and runners. The Kardashians do it, so it must be cool, right? Yep, you don’t even have to pretend you are going to the gym anymore. Now when your family and friends find you sitting in your track pants at 1pm eating an ice cream sandwich they don’t need to worry about whether your life is falling apart, you’re just ‘on trend’, it’s fine...

Winter style!

For those of you who don’t know, ‘Athleisure’ is a growing fashion trend that makes it completely acceptable to hang out in your favourite hoodie, track pants and runners.

NETFLIX I know Netflix has been kicking around for a while now, but a Winter hermit would be nothing without a good show to binge watch. However, when you add Netflix into the equation along with Uber Eats and your ‘Athleisure’ track pants, people do start to question whether your new trendy lifestyle choices are a desperate cry for help. Have no fear fellow hermits, for I have invented the perfect solution that allows you to masquerade as a proactive member of society while simultaneously combating the effects of all the ice cream sandwiches you’ve consumed. I call it ‘Harry Squatter’, and it might just be the next Crossfit. Basically you take a movie like Harry Potter and make up rules such as ‘Squat every time Harry does something stupid’ or ‘Squat every time Snape is shady’. Trust me, by end of the movie you will have the Kardashian booty to match your ‘Athleisure’ track pants. Of course, the best part is that no one can tell you your Uber Eats ordering, track pant wearing and Netflix binging lifestyle is unhealthy — talk to the thighs, haters. So there you have it, Winter 2017 in a nutshell. If you need me I’ll be in my living room watching Harry Squatter and the Philosopher’s Tone. 9

GET IT I BUSINESS PROFILE

Fight your fight without

burnout Founder of MIAKO Education Mia Munro teaches you how to be a real change maker urrumbin local Mia Munro knows a thing or two about fighting for what she believes in and has contributed to the start-up of over 21 social projects. One area she spent considerable time and energy on is child trafficking. “Prostitution, child trafficking and the world of using children as vehicles for pleasure is a world issue that sickens me,” she says.“Around nine years ago a team of business leaders and I went to Thailand and Cambodia to see what we could do.” “We walked the path of a trafficked child from the hills in northern Thailand to Bangkok and Pattaya where they were often stolen to work in brothels. We walked the streets at night and went undercover into brothels to see the emergence of multiple children, as young as six years old, dressed up in bikinis ready to dance for hours.” Mia’s purpose saw her move to Thailand indefinitely and she was able to witness many children being rescued to arrive safely in a loving home away from danger. Another cause she is very passionate about is inclusion for people living with intellectual disabilities. Her sister Marnie was affected by the condition and although she required 24-hour support for safety, she was included in everything the family did. “I never will forget being in Fiji with my mum and seeing a child with polio who had been hidden away from the village activities,” she says. “From that moment on I passionately fought for inclusion in my own way, I spent much of my time with other families with disabled children. I was active in many community events and went on to work in residential facilities as I trained to become a nurse.” However, all of Mia’s action came to a halt following her sister’s passing. “My giving levels were out of whack, my frustrations with humanity heightened and my hope for the future dwindling fast,” she says. “Doctors spent months trying to diagnose the very strange symptoms my body was June 2017

throwing out and when things went from bad to worse and the medical system was not working, I sought alternative healing. “I started to recognise the truth of what had happened. It was like I had taken on the responsibility of all humanity, something I found later on to be a very common burnout symptom for change makers.” With a powerful healing team, and a very new way of seeing Mia launched miakoeducation.com to assist other change makers who were exhausted.

We walked the path of a trafficked child from the hills in northern Thailand to Bangkok and Pattaya where they were often stolen to work in brothels

“Our change makers as human beings are our most precious resource but misguided they end up exhausted and walking a path that is not sustainable,” she says. “We take leaders on a new pathway and provide innovative solutions that serve humanity, the environment and our animal kingdom.” If you have something you’re passionate about but don’t know where to start, Mia has some tips. “First evaluate what you stand against? 10

What infuriates you and makes your blood boil?” she says. “Second what do you stand for? Now flip that emotion to something that is empowering and possible in the future. “Lastly ask yourself, what role do I choose to play? If you don’t understand the roles seek more information. Find innovation groups online that will support your discovery process.” After Mia’s experience with fatigue, she also knows how to fight for a cause without burning out. Here’s what she suggests. 1. Take out a minimum two days to sit in nature and rest and reflect. 2. Ask yourself a truthful question: why did you start working in this field in the first place? Find your real big WHY. 3. Then ask yourself,“What is it that I personally need right now?” Many people answer money but rarely is it money at this stage. 4. Listen to your answer and ask yourself again,“Is this true?” Finding the real truth without influence or programming can be the tough part but by listening to your truth you can identify the real problem. Is it martyrdom, lack of support, lack of commercial model or lack of finances? Most people who come to us think their problem is money, if only we had more money, but a hand out, more donations or a grant won’t fix the internal core problem. Burn out comes from you internally; it is hard to admit this. I was a successful entrepreneur, it couldn’t have been me! HA! But it was my internal world that needed to shift. When this shift was made I was able to see the truth of our world, of giving and receiving.

Tax planning: be smart

allace Partners loves helping small business, and annual tax planning is an important activity that all business owners should engage in. Why? Because you need to know what your taxation liabilities are well before they are due and take steps to minimise your tax before June 30. The more you know about your business, the better decisions you will make and the more your business will prosper. Firstly, let’s understand what you are really saving in tax by spending your hard earned business profits. As a rule of thumb, for every $1,000 you spend you are saving $345 in tax. If you don’t need it, don’t buy it to save tax because it’s actually costing you more than it’s saving you. Wallace Partners considers your business profitability as a whole after tax; we aim to help our clients increase their overall wealth by driving business profits up and putting more money in our clients’ pockets.

3 Depreciation: The small business $20,000 write off has been extended to June 30 2018 and is now accessible to more businesses. Those businesses who turnover up to $10m can now access this tax deduction. 3 Wages: Subject to personal services income rules, if your spouse works in your business you can consider paying them a reasonable wage based on the work they perform. 3 Prepayments: Consider prepaying expenses (small business), examples include rent, insurance and interest. • Structure: Operating your business in the right structure can save you thousands of dollars. Real life example: 3 Mrs X is a business owner that came to see us in February 2016 to get some advice in relation to tax minimisation and structuring. She was operating as a sole trader and her estimated taxable income was $290,000.

Here are a few tips and tricks that you can utilise in your business before June 30. • Defer income: You may want to consider deferring income until after June 30, especially if you expect lower income in the 2018 financial year in comparison to this financial year. Be wary of the impact on your cash flow! • Accelerate expenses: Consider bringing forward any expenditure into this current financial year, only if you need it! • Deductions: Ensure bad debts are written off in your accounts before June 30. 3 Employer and/or self-employed superannuation contributions must be paid to and received by your fund by June 30.

3 Income tax on the earnings was expected to be $114,247 if she didn’t make any changes. 3 We provided advice in relation to her structure including asset protection and tax minimisation. 3 The results of great advice: a tax saving of $46,894.90. Of course every client is different and not all strategies suit all clients and their situation, this information is general in nature only. If you would like a review of your current tax strategy and structure give us a call on 55263888. We are a local Gold Coast business and would love to help you.

What’s trending this season Meet Margaret Berndt from Mirra Boutique in Paradise Point who has the hot picks for Winter 2017 fter running her previous boutique in Brisbane for nearly 18 years, Margaret opened Mirra Boutique. Four years on and she is still loving offering Gold Coast women something different. After 22 years in fashion, are you still as passionate about it as when you first started? Yes I am! You see, every day you have to get up and get dressed, right? So have some fun with it, play a little! I believe dressing can make you feel comfortable, confident and happy. Now we know about your fashion philosophy, what’s in this season? Well it is gorgeous, the colour palette is beautiful. I have chosen lots of soft neutrals, placid silver, grey, charcoal, cream, muted tones of taupe and mocha — it's delicious! And of course, a bit of black, there has to be — it's not a law or anything there just has to be some. Loads of lovely fabrics, fluid fabrics, natural fibres, fabrics to breathe and move in and drape, lightweight easy-to-wear pieces. Winter dressing here can be a little tricky with fresh

mornings, cool nights and beautiful days. We need a cardi and scarf but as the day warms we need to peel off, so layering is the key. What's in store right now at Mirra? There are jeans of course — NYDJ, the very comfortable, flattering American jean with tummy tuck technology. Cosy knits from Zacket & Plover, a Melbourne-based family company using beautiful Italian yarns. Banana Blue with unstructured edgy characteristics in natural fibres. And from the talented designers of New Zealand's Obi, Chocolat and HSL Travellers, gorgeous collections, very wearable, dress up or dress down pieces, the perfect layering ranges to build and create your individual look. I simply love the beautiful no-ironingneeded chiffon items! Let's not forget to accessorise. Jewellery, scarves, belts and hats all highlight and add interest to a subtle neutral outfit. Costume jewellery is fabulous right now and there is lots to choose from. Enjoy the season!

Teneile Napoli CAUSE: Tattooist empowering women in and out of the industry through her all-female tattoo studio Garage Ink Manor; helping families affected by suicide

Teneile Napoli

WHY AN ALL-FEMALE STUDIO: Women have a kindness, a nurturing side, and when we are creating highly emotional and special tattoos for people, I believe this comes from a very feminine energy. The girls always show strength, work ethic, passion, respect for each other and their clients, and we all just get each other — well most of the time! EXPERIENCE IN A MALE-DOMINATED INDUSTRY: I appreciate the men that did support me through everything as it was not easy, but I kept my head down and my heart open. I was so obsessed with tattooing art, my art. I had the love and support I needed from family, friends and my amazing clients. And I would never change a thing. Every heartache, every achievement was beautiful and has made me the person I am today.

Nadine Muller

HOW YOU LEAD THE WAY: I’ve always thought outside the box, always taking risks, changing thing up. If people are going left, I go right. I don't really like breaking the rules but sometimes you just have to make your own!

CAUSE: Advocating for women to breastfeed in public without shame or stigma through her own breastfeeding journey on Instagram: nadinemuller__

MEMORABLE WORK: The stand outs are most certainly the teen suicides and the portraits of those beautiful kids on the mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. We are going to help and I have so much on the go at the moment in developing a strategy to instil a new core subject in every school across Australia that teaches children self-love, mindfulness and the tools to understand the importance of human feelings and connection. Therefore helping them in every other aspect in their life. Prep to year 12, let's do it people!

WHY YOU SPOKE OUT: I’ve always been quite raw, honest, forthcoming and open on my social media platforms, especially regarding my breastfeeding journey. Providing comfort and nourishment to my child in this way is something that I continue to be proud of. The bond is incredibly special; something that I didn’t expect would move me so much. WHY THERE’S A STIGMA: Breasts are most commonly regarded as sexual objects instead of for their biological function, which is to produce milk for an infant. Interestingly, until recently, even Instagram banned photos of breastfeeding mothers, perceiving it as a violation of their nudity policies, again reiterating this association between breasts and sex. The taboo comes from the very fact that we are an over sexualised culture, the message is that breasts are mainly regarded as sexual pleasure as opposed to providing nourishment to a baby. Because of the stigma attached with public breastfeeding and the sexualisation of a woman’s breasts mothers are bound to be the recipients of negative and misguided comments from time to time — it is simply the

WHY IT EMPOWERS YOU: My tattooing gives me a sense of connection with the ideas and dreams of someone else (my client) and collaborating, whether it's a full bodysuit or a single portrait, there is a connection there with my client I can't explain. It gives me so much joy to see the happiness in my clients. When they see their thoughts and expression of self on their body or see a photo of a loved one passed or still with us to look back at them forever. I'm so very grateful for this amazing life! And I don't take one single day for granted.

CAUSE: Vulnerable elderly people matter; combatting the number who fall while living on their own through CareCallingNow HOW IT STARTED: My husband Ian and I were a young, busy family, running a demanding business and trying to balance our life as best we could. His mother Maisie, 86, lived in Melbourne on her own and we just weren’t able to check on her every day, so a medical alert necklace was the next best thing. Maisie fell one day in the bathroom, suffering a mini stroke and was not wearing her necklace because she found it uncomfortable. She was paralysed by the stroke and lay on her cold bathroom floor, unable to move or call out for help for two days before she was found. Thankfully, Maisie survived her ordeal, but we were all shaken. AN IDEA IS BORN: Maisie, like many older people, wouldn’t wear her medical alert pendant. We couldn’t possibly ring her every day or ask her neighbours to spend more time checking in on her… And besides, Mum wouldn’t want any of that. If only we could call Mum every day. But how? We thought, what if we could automate it? Automated daily reassurance calls by phone to your loved ones to check they’re okay. GENERATIONAL BUSYNESS: Many in the younger generation are so time poor that it is difficult to "find time" to call. When we are young we don't really realise how busy we are we just get the job done! We fit our parents in when we have time or when it suits our purpose. I don't think it is a case of remembering, it is more that there is a lack of awareness and I believe that is just youth and history repeating itself. WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT: Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among people over the age of 65. The Australian Bureau of Statistics projections suggest that by 2026 about 907,000 people aged 75 years and over will be living alone, over two thirds of them older women. When a system is failing, people start paying attention. With our aging population, one solution was never going to be enough. We have just added another option… and that’s not the end of the story.

unfortunate truth at this given time. WHAT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED: I shared a breastfeeding photo of my son and as I was nursing him back to health from a stomach bug and an attempt to shame me was tried and snowballed quite quickly. The man said that my son would be embarrassed and grossed out by the image when he grows older, that people like me are selfish for posting pictures like this, and that it has nothing to do with my child but rather for attention seeking purposes to increase a social media following. He also said I should spend less time posting photos on social media and actually look after my child like a good mother should. HOW YOU’VE FOUGHT BACK: I posted a lengthy post defending mothers rights to post breastfeeding images on social media and likewise posted a whole slideshow of pictures that featured me breastfeeding my son — encouraging other mothers internationally to do the same, with the hashtag #wefeedunited. The support was incredible, the beautiful images of mothers nursing their babies were posted all over the world and I’ll forever be thankful to all the people who banded together in support of this. We don’t just stand united, #wefeedunited and that is something that we as mothers should be very proud of! WHY YOU’RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT IT: All mothers need to know that however you feed a child, breast or bottle, that it is a beautiful act and bond between a mother and her young; it can be done wherever, whenever and however (covered or uncovered), and it can be done without judgement. As mothers we post these images and videos because we are proud, to give other mums encouragement; we post so that other mums feel accepted, supported and respected. I encourage fellow mothers to post their ‘feeding’ breast or bottle photos, to be proud and to inspire other mothers to do the same. It all contributes to the bigger cause — that this act isn’t wrong, it isn’t embarrassing, it is far from gross; it is beautiful, it should be celebrated and it should be admired!

HOW IT STARTED: Five years ago I was sitting in my office working as a Bookkeeper, my two kids had left home for good, I was bored with my life as it was, I was spending too much time shopping for unnecessary things and having numerous lunches with girlfriends, who were also utterly bored with their lives. During quiet times sitting at my desk on my own I started to write short pieces about being in my mid 50s and feeling worthless. I then decided to start up my own blog and within six months I gained a whole heap of followers and readers! PURPOSE: My purpose has always been about being a good role model and inspiring others to improve themselves. My posts are light-hearted and entertaining, discussing issues that women my age face, like menopause, the ageing process, kids leaving home and retirement. I want to motivate and inspire women to feel worthy again and to get out there and live their lives that they suddenly regain after years of hard work and sacrifice raising families. WHY OVER 50s SHOULD LIVE LIFE: Living the life you desire is so much easier when you don’t have the pressure of a full-time job, a home mortgage, dependent children or purchase unnecessary material objects. I now have more time and money for me and I can chose to do as much or as little as I want. I also have a lot more spare time to keep healthy and active that enables me to travel long distances and hike or walk up mountains and through bush trails. I feel that this time of my life is “my time” and I intend to make the most of it while I still have my health. WHAT’S HOLDING SOME PEOPLE BACK: Fear. I believe people get stuck in their own little comfort zones and are too frightened to get out there and experience travel. It is as though once people are a certain age they give up on themselves because society perceives them as “old” so that’s how they view themselves. Fortunately I don’t think this way! OBSTACLES ALONG THE WAY: During the early months of starting up my blog I found my friends and family to be very unsupportive. They all thought I was crazy writing a blog and putting myself out there in the blogosphere. It was through pure stubbornness and perseverance that I managed to make my blog the success it is today and also earn a small income from it. Never, never give up on something you are passionate about!

Video is the new

black

Whether it’s your personal image or that of your business, video is a reflection of who you are and what you represent. Define this and put it forth on camera each and every time

Walt Cudlip from Vitamin Media reveals why you should get on board the video bandwagon

here’s no avoiding it; whether it’s a sultry clip on Instagram, ‘Woo Grrlz’ having a fun night out and sharing it on Facebook or someone’s super-helpful ‘how to’ tips on YouTube, it’s video and it’s everywhere. So much traffic on the Internet is shifting to video (infographics abound with statistics on this) and there’s a lot of pressure to create and post content. Judging by what we see (with our keen professional eyes), a lot of it is ad hoc, low quality and not a great reflection of the person or business connected to the content. Ladies, you don’t want to be one of these. Quality is easier to achieve than you think and it’s also not expensive. We don’t want to see you shamed on social media with embarrassing footage, and a good guess is that you don’t want to either. With this in mind, we’ve assembled some guiding principles that the professionals use to develop a strong following. Know who you are Here’s where so many people trip up, and by understanding this, you can avoid falling at the first hurdle; be ‘on brand’. Whether it’s your personal image or that of your business, video is a reflection of who you are and what you represent. Define this and put it forth on camera each and every time. The consistency builds your image and viewers return again and again June 2017

because they know what to expect, even if your brand is ‘unexpected’. Explore the App store The video mode on your smartphone does an average job. For the cost of coffee with a girlfriend you can install applications that give you much more cinematic control. Why is this important? The better the image quality, the better you look. We love using Filmic Pro (works on both iOS and Android); it allows you to adjust the same settings as you would if you had a more expensive DSLR camera. Learn basic skills No camera can focus as fast as the human eye, so don’t try to whip around a room shooting all the “AMAZING! OMG I can’t believe what I’m seeing” stuff in ten seconds. It’s just a blurry mess. Frame your shots, use steady movements and make sure what you’re recording is lit well enough. The viewing experience is much improved and that will reflect on your brand. We also need to quickly address the audio issue. Frankly the mics in smartphones are not great for video. Too much room noise, wind and often pointing 90° to what you’re filming. Third-party microphones are easy to find and make a HUGE difference. If you’re saying something important, or want people to get the full impact of what you’re shooting, it’s key they hear nice clean sound. Get on camera Seems obvious but if you’ve got a fear of looking unpolished or feel uncomfortable being the centre of attention, stop stressing. 16

Remember that no one, not even Hollywood actors, started off fantastic on camera. It’s a developed skill. How do you improve? Write out a script.Your personal story is a good one. Now set up the camera and record it in the privacy of your home, office or wherever you won’t be disturbed. Do it over and over.Try different presentation styles, use lots of energy and speak in a relaxed friendly manner. The more you practice, the more confident you will appear. Give value Top content that gets more hits, likes and shares delivers on the WIIFM factor.“What’s In It For Me?” is what your audience is asking whenever they interact with you. Just like any of your other social posts, videos have to give value. This is like a feedback loop to your boosted following. You can be the Queen of product reviews, top tips, how-to skills or interviewing thought leaders. Whatever your content is, make sure your audience is getting great take-away. Then ask for comments or follow through so you can gauge how you’re succeeding. Video is a huge part of social media and if your goals are to be a top vlogger (video blogger), brand ambassador or to feed your marketing with quality content, there’s no more powerful way to do it. With minimal investment in equipment, but some thought and effort in your objectives and image, your brand will stand out against the rest in the most on-trend way. GET IT I LOCAL PROFILE

"I'm not known for my silence" Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert talks to Hetty Johnston about how far a mother’s love can really take someone ounder and Chair of Bravehearts Hetty Johnston AM is not only Australia's leading child protection advocate but a mother who went to hell and back for her daughter. With a background in business management, then involved in politics, Hetty turned her grief into something good and launched Bravehearts to protect and help children affected by sexual assault. Hi Hetty, can you start off by telling us what happened to your daughter and how you found out about it? Our daughter Kayleen was sexually assaulted at age seven. I should say here that it’s perfectly fine to use her name as she is as passionate about this as I am. This was a foreign concept to me. I was working for Senator Kernot at the time as the QLD State Leader for the Australian Democrats. I had a protected childhood, I wasn’t harmed, I had beautiful parents who protected me and we got everything we needed. This whole concept that people could sexually assault children, while somewhere in my head I knew that it happened, I just didn’t think it would ever happen to us.

1 in 5 children will be sexually assaulted before they turn 18, and mostly the people that commit those offences are people known and trusted, and even loved, by the child and by the family

give you the bounty bag, they talk to you about cleaning their teeth, breastfeeding, the importance of immunisation and all these things that are around the health of the child but nobody says, “Oh and by the way, 1 in 5 children will be sexually assaulted before they turn 18, and mostly the people that commit those offences are people known and trusted, and even loved, by the child and by the family.” It’s not a really pleasant message, it’s a horrible message, but it’s absolutely true. The 1996 Federal Election was on and I was running as a candidate for the Australian Democrats for the seat of Fadden. I said to my husband Ian, “Why don’t you take our daughter and go to New Zealand?” As his family is over there. Basically step to the side while I leave my blinkers firmly planted on campaigning. So they did that and when they were over there she disclosed to him. My husband believed her immediately, thank God. He had a choice to make, whether he was going to defend his daughter and tell me or whether he would defend his father, who was the offender. For Ian, his Mum died when she was young so Dad was everything. And we all loved him, totally, no question. He knew how I would react if he told me. He knows my background, I’m not known for my silence — not even back then. I’m quite used to campaigning, advocating and speaking, and I’m not putting up with anything. But in that moment, lying there on the bed with our daughter who was distressed at the time and didn’t want to go to bed, he chose her which makes him the most amazing man on the planet. He rang me, I couldn’t believe it but I did believe it, and life just turned in a nanosecond. So what happened from there? They came back almost immediately on the falsehood that my father was unwell. That’s how we got them out of the country and back to Australia. We told no one in New Zealand what had happened as we didn’t want anyone talking to our very young daughter or blaming her. I did all the research, who does this, why do they do it, and I looked at what was happening to these children who were sexually assaulted — drug abuse, alcohol abuse, self-harm, eating disorders, mental health issues, depression, anxiety, suicide, not finishing their studies, being dropouts, being angry and finishing up in jail. I

We believed it because it was our daughter and she didn’t tell lies. Why would she? Kids don’t lie about this stuff. People don’t want to believe it. That’s what happens.

remember looking at that and thinking, “I do not want that for our daughter, this is not the outcome that I am looking for.” So how are we actually dealing with this now and how are we going to do it better? I wanted to deal with this differently and fortunately my husband supported me in that. We went to police and police through Interpol went back to the police in New Zealand. I wrote a 10-page letter to everybody we knew in New Zealand, family and friends, to tell them what had happened and to explain to them the necessity that if this did happen to anyone else that they come forward. We didn’t want our daughter to be the one that had to carry the court case and in New Zealand they don’t rely on the separations of trial legislation that they do here, so families can go together. Ian’s sister and cousin came forward as the lead complainants, that meant Kayleen didn’t have to give evidence which was beautiful. I’m not sure we would have proceeded had she had to take a stand. Ian’s father ended up pleading guilty to 19 counts of indecent assault. It went back 40 years and there were 10 or 12 victims who came forward. He was sentenced to four years in prison and was released after two and a half years. So what was it was like as a mother to go through that and to know what your daughter was going through too? Oh, gosh, you’ll make me cry! When you have your children you have so much hope and so much love for them and when someone threatens that, and actually hurts your child, and you look at a bloody computer screen and you can see what the next step might be for them… it’s just… if you’ve ever looked through a kaleidoscope it’s all moving all of the time. There’s no top, bottom, left, right, you can’t 23

get a grip on anything, that’s your life. I’m a very ordered person, I’m structured, I’m organised, and then that happens. I was angry, sad, lost, lonely, distrustful… I felt like a failure as a mother because I’d failed to protect my daughter. How did I not see this? How did I not know this? How did that happen? This man can’t be doing that… not this man… this man that I love… this father in law of mine. There’s no words. There’s really no words. And it’s not something I’d even want to try and dig into and feel again because I’d break down. I can tell you though, the next morning after finding out I went onto my deck and screamed the most horrific obscenities. It was like I was purging. I had to go apologise to my neighbours! Whatever happens, and everyone will respond to things differently, but for me I went from grief to anger really quickly, and I’m not much one for anger or hanging onto things so I had to scream and just get it out. From there I went to action… How do I fix it? And that’s where my energy has stayed. I think if I had of stayed in anger, or even in sadness, it would have killed me. I had to turn that energy into something positive. What was the fight you fought within your family like? Turmoil. Total turmoil. Who’s on our side, who’s on their side? The whole family just totally fractured. First of all, he was a very popular man, obviously, that’s how he got access to all of these kids. No one could believe it. We believed it because it was our daughter and she didn’t tell lies. Why would she? Kids don’t lie about this stuff. People don’t want to believe it. That’s what happens. Ian’s brother had three boys and he had to make a choice whether he was going to stick with his Dad and play happy families or was he going to report. So he decided to not see his father any longer. And Ian’s sister was a survivor. I think that was the key for Ian — that he had his brother and sister standing with him. His step mother, who he adored, stood with the offender. Not a bad thing within itself because somebody who knows watches. The bad thing about that was she thought we had done the wrong thing by going to the police and she kind of blamed us for it, and that hasn’t really been repaired. Since then he’s died (the offender) and his wife we’ve seen at the funeral. She’s a June 2017

victim too, but her views are so ignorant and offensive that it’s hard. I don’t wish her harm, I just don’t want to be around someone that has the toxic ideas she has, they are toxic and they’re wrong. They’re absolutely wrong and yet she’s not the only one. Do you want to tell me about your experience seeking help after Ian and Kayleen came back and how Bravehearts came about? When they came home we sought counselling but there was no support services for these kids. There was for 15 and up but the ones underneath — nothing. I did so much research and not one of them was able to help me. No one dealt with child sexual assault. This was a taboo subject, this wasn’t on the table, there was no funding for it, and therefore no one really wanted to do it. I found a few private practitioners and we were able to pay for it, and it was a lot of money even then. We got ourselves all sorted out. I tried to get back on with my life, I really did, we all did, we tried to just get back to normal, but I couldn’t. I just couldn’t do it because I knew we had to do something. I couldn’t know what I then knew and not do something about it. The guilt, my conscience, wouldn’t allow me to. I talked to my husband about it and we started an organisation. My husband and I paid for it and we did it by ourselves for nine years. We didn’t actually want government money because we didn’t want the muzzle that came with it. I do believe we were the first organisation to finally get funding without the muzzle, and that was courtesy of Anna Bligh when she was Premier. Bravehearts started by breaking the silence with the White Balloon Day campaign. We’ll never know who the offenders are until the victims tell us. We wanted to break the silence because even in our family the offender had been offending against two generations of girls across 40 years, and no one ever said anything, not even to each other. So you can see this cultural reluctance to speak out. This silence was actually facilitating further harm against more and more kids. So the first port of call was to stop the silence, well, what a nightmare! I was shouted down from the greatest heights by the biggest voices, I was called a lesbian, a right wing activist, a nutter, a greenie, a “damaged mother who hasn’t got over her stuff yet” — can’t tell you how many times I heard that! June 2017

White Balloon Day ambassador Natalie Gruzlewski with 'Ditto'. Ditto's Keep Safe Adventure has now educated almost 700 ,000 Aussie kids and will see 2,42 5 children this term on the GC.

I just know why I’m doing this. I know that this isn’t a vendetta against any person, this is an attack on paedophilia. This is what I can do, for what it’s worth, to protect children against sexual assault and to finally address that. It’s hard work and it’s emotionally draining. It’s 24/7. I’m not going to sugar coat it, this is not an easy job. It’s getting up every morning and coming in to fight the good fight for 20 years. It’s hard and some days you wake up and you just want to put your head under the covers and stay right

where you are and not think about it. But overwhelmingly, all of that goes to the side when you see these kids come in here any they’re destroyed and you watch them over a few weeks come and go again and you can see the change in them. There’s no amount of money for that. What are some of the other rewarding things you have experienced through all the work you have done? Legislation, Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act — that’s now right across the country, and that came out of the death of little Keyra Steinhardt — amber alerts, our work with police and Taskforce Argos, the support we get from organisations… This place beats for kids. It’s the survivors, that’s what it is. When you’re able to help them, you’ve actually changed their whole life and their children — the whole trajectory. As well as my family. I have two daughters who I’m very proud of. Talking in this sense though, seeing the amazing human being that Kayleen is and knowing that could be the future for all children. The trajectory into dysfunction doesn’t have to occur, child sexual assault is preventable. I’m proud of it all, I’m proud of all the people I work with — particularly my daughter Kayleen.

Liz Clift says goodbye after 25 years at Benowa Gardens

“Thank you to all of my loyal clients and friends who have supported me over all these years.” – Liz Clift s an original tenant at Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre, Liz Clift has seen a lot of changes in business and fashion from discount shopping centres to online shopping. Liz has survived all of this with a clear understanding of what her customer’s wants and needs are. Her clients like to feel and try, then buy. She is constantly exploring and sourcing unique designer labels from all over the world that are exclusive to her boutique. Liz has decided to move on to an exciting new venture with a fresh approach. As a constant traveller she has packing and travel

She designed a label, Sans Souci, withouta-care travel wear, which has rocked out the door of her boutique. This has been a passion of Liz’s for some time and as a multi-award winning fashion designer, she has not lost touch in designing garments that women want — easy to wear and care for, drip dry, no-fuss, stylish clothing. “I have been overwhelmed by the loyalty of my clients over the years,” Liz says.“Many have become close personal friends to both

my husband Bill and myself.” “I’m also extremely fortunate to have a loyal and loving team behind me. Christina Price has been with me 24 years, Helene Gonzales 23 years, Ellie Ollson 23 years, Carol Flipp 16 years, Ann Goggin two years and Shelly Le a recent addition to the Liz Clift boutique family. “Without their loyalty, honesty, integrity, expertise and devotion I would not be where I am today. Controversial exercises that waste time and cause injuries Learn the exercises to avoid in the gym with Owner of Vision Personal Training Bundall Jeff Osborne here will be many personal trainers and gym goers that will HATE this article. The reason is because I am about to point out why some of their favourite exercises are a waste of time, stupid and cause injuries. If you are doing any of these at the moment, STOP! If your trainer makes you do any of these, ask them to find something better. Where things started to go wrong was with trainers who have all day to train, are physically gifted and don't spend all day at a desk. With all the time they had to train they got bored. So they started looking for new ways to do things. Rather than using great anatomy and physiology knowledge they went off how something 'feels'. Then, because it worked for them, they assumed it would work for everyone. I'm not saying any of these exercises don't work, I am saying they aren't worth it. If you look at the risk of the exercise first, ask is the exercise safe? All exercises carry some risk with them. However, some exercises, because of the way the body works, have a much higher risk. Some of the exercises are rehab exercises that trainers have decided to make training exercises out of, but that’s another article! The other side of the coin is that some exercises take much more work to get results. As a personal trainer, I think it is almost criminal if you are giving your clients exercises that aren't the best ones for their goals and who they are. That is part of what a client is paying for. Here are my top three STUPID exercises. Front and side raises These are just flat out dumb. From an anatomical perspective, taking a long lever and adding a load to the end of it puts great strain on the ligaments and tendons that are the most injured in the body. On top of that, they are ineffective. For most people they will use a quarter of the weight they would shoulder press working the same muscle. To recap, they don't do much good, they strain the most commonly injured part of the body and you have to lift less. Bad choice. Leg extensions Whenever you are working a single joint, you increase the stress on that joint. With a leg extension, you are adding something called a sheering force to the knee which the only thing holding your knee together at that point isn't the muscles around the joint but the ACL ligament — which is a commonly injured one. There are at least four better exercises for the quads and none of them put anywhere near the same amount of stress on the joint as extensions. If you like your knees and want to walk into old age, skip this one too. Sit-ups Sit-ups are dangerous and pointless! They don’t do what most people want them to do... reduce fat. Spot reduction is a myth and if working one area burnt fat from that area, all chubby tennis players would have one skinny arm. What do sit-ups do? They take one muscle, the rectus abdominis, and add very little load and accumulate lactic acid which is a sign you aren't burning fat at all. The worst part is the repeated compression of the lower discs in your vertebrae. Most people have small bulges in these discs and all sit-ups do is aggravate them. So they don't do anything, they burn and hurt and they wear out your lower back. Worst. Exercise. Ever. If you want to test what the person recommending your exercise actually knows, ask them to name the muscle that is working and June 2017

where that muscle starts and ends. If they can’t tell you the muscle or the bones that it attaches to, you might be getting bad advice. Simple works best, especially when you don't have hours and hours to work out. The name of the game is results and the only thing that new exercises and changing things every week does is hide when a program isn't working. P: 5538 4788 visionpt.com.au/bundall

Simple steps to hearing better in noisy environments Spend less time straining to hear with these steps from Clarity Hearing Solutions Principal Audiologist Grant Collins ne of the hardest environments in which to maintain a conversation is in noisy restaurants, cafes, food courts, bars etc. It doesn’t matter if you have untreated hearing loss, an auditory processing deficit, older hearing aids or completely normal hearing, listening to conversations in noisy environments is hard. There are some simple strategies you can use, with and without hearing aids, to aid your communication in these environments. If you do not have any hearing aids or you have older, more primitive, hearing aids then where you sit in a noisy restaurant is crucial. Many people sit in the middle of the noise and are unable to hold a conversation due to the competing noises all around them. If you sit in a corner or with your back to a wall then there is no competing noise behind you. All sounds are in front of you and you can pick the people talking at your

table above most of the other restaurant noise as they are closer. If you have a more recent hearing aid with directional microphones, which can reduce noises behind you, then you would do the opposite. By facing the wall you reduce the unwanted noise source in front of you and your hearing aids will reduce the level of noise behind you, allowing an increased ease of conversation in these environments. Good lighting is very important. We all rely on an element of lip reading to help us out when unwanted background noises are actually louder than the people we want to hear. Having good lighting on peoples’ faces aids this strategy. When someone talks to you from the side, don’t push one ear towards them to try to hear them better. Turn your head to look at them instead to supplement your hearing with visual lip-reading cues, and to maximise their voice to both ears.

Two ears are always better than one. This is particularly important for those with directional hearing aids as the hearing aids are only focusing on the sounds in front of you. Not the side. Lastly, get someone’s attention before you start talking to them so they are looking at you from the start of the conversation and you can use visual cues. If either of you are looking elsewhere at the beginning of the conversation, there is a pretty good chance that by the time you do see their face you’ll have missed some of the conversation. While these strategies can help you, properly fitted hearing aids suited to your lifestyle will help your comprehension dramatically in these situations if you suffer from hearing loss or an auditory processing disorder. Talk to your audiologist today to determine the best solution for you.

Become a handywoman Learn the tricks of the trade to create an impressively clean home et’s face it, keeping the home, family and dog clean while allowing everyone to enjoy life (and enjoy life yourself too!), is a very tricky balancing act that you certainly did not go to circus school for. Before you come tumbling down from your high rope (or explode because there’s muddy paw prints on your just-mopped floor), we have some hacks to help you learn the ropes. If there’s some circus tricks you really just don’t have time to learn, paying someone else to do it is a great option. We are strapped for time these days and as we all know time = money. Besides, no one has to know that when you say you’ve been “handy” around the home, you really mean you’ve used your hands to pick up the phone and call an expert to help out. Your secret is safe with us. PROBLEM: The air con is seriously putrid It’s cooling down on the GC and while we may no longer need to retreat to the air conditioned indoors to find some solace from our constantly dripping sweat, don’t think the AC doesn’t need cleaning. It’s been out of use the last month or two and will already be harvesting mould. Rather than leaving it until the November heat strikes, and finding your AC is not only less effective because the filter is clogged but it has a lovely mouldy stench, give it a good clean and then store it away or cover it. How to clean your AC: Your AC’s filters, coils and fins require regular maintenance but we’ll focus on filters here. Most AC filters are washable so simply pull the filter out, rinse it in your sink or tub, use a little dishwashing liquid and a soft-bristled brush to scrub any additional gunk, leave to air dry, run a vacuum cleaner

hose over it, and then snap it back into the unit. Need a helping hand? If that sounds like something you don’t have time for or you want your AC to have a full clean and check up, get in touch with our AC expert. PROBLEM: The car is a sight for sore eyes Cleaning the car… Some of us love it, some of us hate it but it’s a job that does have to be done. Our cars go through the works with every member of the family in and out of it bringing in dirt, sand, grass, rubbish, food crumbs and, our personal favourite, dog hair from our most loved furry family member. Hacks to clean your car: Get crayon stains or candle wax stains out of your upholstery by ironing a piece of paper on top of the seat. Clean leather car seats with a little bit of olive oil on a cloth and get right into the texture of the leather; soap wash first and rub dry afterwards. Brush out AC vents and other tough to reach places with foam brushes you would use for

painting. Need a helping hand? Those hacks only help with some parts; there’s still the rest of your car to go! Give our expert a call today and your car will be looking and feeling new in no time. PROBLEM: The dog stinks And not just because he keeps threatening to kill the postman with his bark but in reality wouldn’t hurt a fly — no, we mean he actually stinks. Whether he’s been swimming often and has that eau de wet dog fragrance or has rolled in questionable textures and smells on the ground, he needs a bath pronto. Dog-cleaning tips and tricks: Make sure your dog is tired when he gets bathed; that way he won’t treat it as a game. It helps if the surface of the bath isn’t slippery for your dog, so use a large towel or bath mat on the tub floor. Also be sure to set up your supplies before you bring your dog to the area. Use dog shampoo, a large

If you don’t feel like battling the dog to stand still while you and the house gets covered in water, dirt, fur and soap, call our doggy expert. PROBLEM: The property needs some work done Homes require serious upkeep… whether it’s chipped paint or that squeaky stair everyone has been avoiding stepping on for weeks. The job is usually put in the rainy day task basket and then when that rainy day comes around we’d rather watch a movie on the couch with some wine. Property maintenance for peeling paint: If you have chipped or peeling paint, it’s not an easy fix; peel away loose edges with a scraper, use a wire brush to sweep away debris, if any paint peels, repeat the scraping, apply thin layer of wood filler with putty knife, allow to thoroughly dry, then sand, prime and paint. Need a helping hand? If you’d rather be like Stacy’s Mom and come out with just a towel on for a massage while someone else takes care of your property, no judgement here! Give our expert a call and spend your time

getting pampered instead – even if you don’t have a daughter called Stacy, we know you’ve got it going on. PROBLEM: The pool has more leaves in it than the trees do We love our pools on the GC and spend so much time in them but unfortunately they’re often like a magnet for leaves, twigs, bugs and the occasional dead animal. While it’s not great having our kids scream in horror at the sight of the dead animal, it’s even less fun to hold a funeral for the noisy minor that you’re really not

sad to see go. Hacks to clean your pool: Supercharge your skimmer to help it remove more debris by wrapping an old pair of pantyhose around the baskets and clean out once a week. Toss in a few tennis balls to soak up grime from sunscreen, makeup, hair products and body oil, leaving you with crystal-clear water. Use a baking soda paste to scrub the tiles around your pool of mould and dirt. Need a helping hand? Feeling uninspired to clean your pool in the cooler weather but still want it looking nice? Give our experts a call; they’ll turn the lagoon in your backyard into a swimming paradise again.

Feeling extra handy? If you seriously enjoyed getting handy around your own house with these hacks and realise you have quite the knack for all things home, why not make some extra money from it? You can become the go-to handywoman in your area and reap the benefits. Plus you’ll be your own boss, so you call all the shots!

GET IT I REAL TALK

Rebels with a cause

Elizabeth Campbell believes it’s time to get in touch with your inner rebel and start to the live the life of your dreams where you don’t have to conform appy birthday, Gemini! Don’t you love how this whole month (and the one before it and the one after it) are all about us! I know, me too. And don’t you just love how when your evil comes out to play you can blame it on being a Gemini! Oh, or is that just me? In this edition, we are talking about embracing your inner rebel — and let me tell you Geminis are really good at this. We don’t conform… well not usually anyway. However, my whole life I have tried to wear conformity like a new handbag or the latest accessory. I did it well for many years too. I have pretty much always done what I was told, especially at school and in my career as a journalist. Even when I was married. In some friendships. And in general life. When I started my business I also tried to confirm, keep everyone happy, you know. Do you know how hard that is? Then I quickly noticed I didn’t actually have to do that anymore. I didn’t have to do what I was told. First of all, you’re your own boss so you answer to yourself… a bit confusing if you’re a Gemini and your other personality tells you can take the day off. {Note: Just in case you don’t know… Geminis have multiple personalities, it’s part of our charm, it’s also confusing for people. But you are always guaranteed a different

experience each and every time you hang out with us because of this slightly insane quality. And also most of the Get it team are Geminis, so you could imagine the personalities getting around in here!}. Anyhow, I was now running my own show and I could basically do whatever I wanted. I could be a rebel in business! I always wanted to be a rebel… I kind of had this romantic notion of rocking up on a Harley in my leathers to a meeting like a rock star. That fantasy hasn’t eventuated yet. So what does being a rebel actually mean? Well, I think it means embracing the sides of you that don’t conform. And, well, I took to this like Carrie Bradshaw to Manolos (I’ve also been watching Sex and the City reruns of late). It’s not rebel without a cause, these days it’s all about being a rebel with a cause. A cause for Manolos perhaps (my business started for shoe money!), or probably more about making an impact on your community, giving to charity and generally just contributing to the greater good. So what does it take to be a rebel? I think they have some certain qualities… if you’re a Gemini you already have several of them… personalities, I mean. 1. Personality: Rebels have a certain personality, they have sass. They have a #nofail attitude towards life and business. They are strong and determined; one-of-a-kind type of people. You know one when you meet them. They might have a stripe of pink in their hair (or their name is Pink!), they might not dress the

part or they will talk very differently. 2. Strong mindset: Always look to the future… and only look back if it’s to go forward. Two words. Oprah Winfrey. Have a look at where this woman has come from. She never talks about it in a negative sense. She hasn’t let her past define her, but she has let it shape her in ways so it can help others. 3. Buck trends: Rebels don’t care for trends… in fact, they make the trends. They aren’t followers. Instead they make the rules and people follow them. They do things differently and the think differently. Hello Richard Branson and Steve Jobs. 4. Ask questions: Rebels, like Geminis, question everything. We were those annoying kids that always asked “Why, but why, why?” Asking questions gets you to the next step, it clarifies a situation and helps you to level up quickly whether you are buying a new straightening iron or running a multi-milliondollar company. 5. Make waves: And they don’t care because waves mean change. Rebels are change makers, they want to see better things happening in their communities and for the people around them. They embrace new ideas and thoughts. And if they don’t agree with them, at least they will listen to them, before making waves! So which one are you? Maybe it’s time to embrace your inner Gemini, I mean rebel, and conform less, make up your own rules and live life on your terms.

I could be a rebel in business! I always wanted to be a rebel… I kind of had this romantic notion of rocking up on a Harley in my leathers to a meeting like a rock star. June 2017

INGREDIENTS • 1/4 kent pumpkin (800g) • 1 bunch baby beetroot • 1 bunch broccolini • 1 bunch baby (Dutch) carrots • 1 red onion • 1/3 cup CocoEarth Liquid Coconut Premium Oil • 1/4 cup orange juice • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves • Salt & pepper • 1 packet haloumi • 4 cups rocket leaves • 2 tbsp toasted pine nuts METHOD Preheat oven to 200°C. Line two oven trays with baking paper. Slice pumpkin into thin wedges. Trim tops off the beetroot and carrots, then peel carrots and quarter beetroot. Peel onion and cut into wedges. Combine orange juice, CocoEarth Liquid Coconut Premium Oil and rosemary leaves in a small jar. Shake to mix well. Drizzle half the oil mixture over veggies, toss to combine and season with salt and pepper. Place pumpkin, beetroot, carrots and onion on the prepared baking trays and roast for 15 minutes. Turn vegetables, add broccolini to trays and roast a further 10-15 minutes until golden and tender. While vegetables are roasting, thickly slice haloumi and brush with a bit of the oil mixture. Cook in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until haloumi is golden on both sides. Serve vegetables over rocket, topped with warm haloumi and pine nuts. Drizzle with remaining CocoEarth orange juice dressing for extra taste. TIP: Haloumi can be replaced (or enjoyed!) with chicken, steak or tofu. 39

GET IT I DATING

I lived

like a man for the

weekend

Inspired by Beyoncé’s If I Were a Boy, a female takes a walk in a man’s shoes FRIDAY 6pm: Just arrived home from work. What a week. A quick shower is needed. 6:30pm: Lost track of time. I throw on a baggy tee and some pants and head to the kitchen. 6:45pm: After staring at the fridge, all I managed to find is a wine, so I pour myself a glass. Let’s order some pizza. 7:15pm: Meat lover’s pizza arrives. Pizza boy was cute so I gave him a wink and told him he’s welcome to come by this address anytime — with or without pizza. Boys love a girl that put sex out there like that. 7:30pm: Slump onto the couch with pizza box on lap. Wine in one hand, pizza in the other. How I Met Your Mother marathon begins. 8:30pm: Feeling like some attention, let’s see what Tinder has on offer tonight. Dad bod, left! Receding hairline, left! Ohh damn, look at his abs, right! Guy with kids, left! Big biceps covered in tattoos, right! 8:45pm: “It’s a match!” Matched with the abs guy. Nice! I kick off the conversation with a classic line guys love,“You know what’d look good on you? Me.” And Abs bites. He laughs it off and asks how my day was and a bunch of other boring crap. I just wanna feel those abs. 10pm: After some mediocre chatting with Abs and a few more episodes, I check my other matches. There’s a bunch, obviously, cause what guy wouldn’t want all of this? But Abs is still the hottest, though he seems a bit needy. Gross. 12am: What’s the time? Oh midnight? I must have fallen asleep on the couch. I push the pizza box off my lap and put the box in the fridge. 12:15am: Stumbling off to the bathroom I give my teeth a quick brush then get to bed. 12:30am: Four new Tinder messages? Treat em’ mean, keep em’ keen they say. I check them all for a little self-validation before bed.Yep, they all want me, duh. Then fall asleep without replying to a single one. SATURDAY 10:30am: Oh man, what is the time? 10:30? Crap, I need to meet Jess at the gym soon! 10:45am: Active wear on… hair tied up… hungry. Need breakfast. Leftover pizza will do! 11am: Spin class. At least we can see the gym floor and all the fine specimens walking around.Thinking about riding them rather than the bike gets me through the class. 12:15pm: Off to see a movie Nicki. We walk into the shopping centre and spot a cute guy who walks past us. Damn, his bum looks great in those jeans so we wolf whistle at him.Yeah, bet you liked that didn’t you mate! You’re welcome. Guys appreciate when you wolf whistle at them. 12:30pm: Movie time with a frozen Coke and big bucket of buttery popcorn. Mmmm the goodness. 3pm: Dropping Nicki home. We drive past a construction zone and have to stop. The guy with the stop sign is hot so I hang out the window and say,“Well, I wouldn’t mind working on you on a fine day like today!” He seems taken aback but I can tell he appreciated the compliment. Made his day. 4pm: I slump onto the couch, time to chill. Probably should check my June 2017

phone.Three Tinder messages? Oh boys, you shouldn’t have! Abs hopes my Saturday is off to a great start. I almost think about replying but fall asleep instead. 6pm: Good nap! I order some Chinese. 7pm: It arrives and the delivery man isn’t even cute. How devastating. I plop on the couch with a wine and devour the Chinese as I watch some more How I Met Your Mother. 8pm: I could actually go for some Abs tonight. I reply back to him “Sorry for the late reply, so busy today. Wanna chill?” He bites straight away and is keen, he asks if I want to do dinner or drinks. No boy, it’s not like that. “I have drinks at my place,” I tell him and insist he should come over. 8:30pm: Quick shower and I put on some cute shorts and a tight singlet. 9pm: Abs arrives. He’s shorter than he looked on Tinder but still slightly taller than me so it will do. We get wine and sit on the couch. He wants to get to know me but all I can think about is getting to know his abs. 9:15am: That’s enough talking. I lean in to kiss him and we start making out. I then climb onto his lap to let him know what’s really going on here tonight. 9:30pm: I pull his shirt off and his abs are good. We head to the bedroom and make quick work of each other. He plants his face in between my legs and it’s alright, he’s no pro, then I climb on top of him and we get to action. 9:45pm: Three positions later I orgasm and roll off him. Phew. I reach for my phone to check any notifications. He looks at me, puzzled, and then says,“Oh, by the way, I didn’t finish yet.” I reply,“Yeah, I’m just really tired now and gonna sleep.” 10pm: He asks if he can stay over and I tell him I have work early tomorrow so he can see himself out. He seems annoyed but I can’t be bothered dealing with man emotions right now. I fall asleep. SUNDAY 9am: Sunday, I have nothing planned for today but Netflix and junk food. I roll over and pick up my phone. Let’s check Tinder. Red-haired tradie, left! Guy on a dirt bike, left! Clark Kent lookalike, right! Gym buff with nice abs, right… 40

Gentle preparations for the 2018 Games

Hear how the Gold Coast and athlete Ashleigh Gentle are preparing for the Commonwealth Games here is less than a year to go until the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade and the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen. The beaches, hinterland, ride loops, world class facilities and endless amount of outdoor swimming pools are a few reasons why I love home, and it’s going to be amazing to showcase the city to the rest of the world.

Commonwealth Games journey so far, even though they’ve shown their support in their own way. “They had embarrassing ‘Go Ash’ t-shirts on for the selection race, so I have absolutely no doubt there will be something in the works for the real deal in April next year,” she says. “Along with family and friends, the support from the Gold Coast community in general is incredible, and I am always extremely humbled and grateful for that. “I hope to see lots of people lining the course for the triathlon as well as the other sports on offer, I hope to get out after my race and support my fellow Australians too.” At the one year to go mark a free public celebration that will run concurrently with the GC2018 Competition Events Schedule was announced. GET IT I DATING

what we

don't understand

about you

While it’s commonly known to never bring up these topics with women, a (very frustrated) man disobeys the unspoken rule for Get it’s Rebel issue

ey women, Let me start out by saying us men love you, we really do; you are so useful for so many things and, let’s face it, us fellas would be lost without you. But there’s some things we’ll just never understand, so I thought I’d bring them up. Something fairly simple that still does our heads in… why do you need so many pillows on the bed? You know we’ll just throw them all off come bed time. They take forever to put back on the bed, and we can never get their placement quite right. It stresses us out, and cushions should be the last thing we have to stress about in the morning. Another thing you have too many of: products in the bathroom. And why does it take you so long to get ready? Oh wait… I think I cracked the code… Maybe it takes so long because you have to use all of the products you have — and there are literally hundreds. (I once counted while killing time on the toilet and had done what I needed to do before I finished counting them… and I spend at least 30 minutes in there). You know what else seriously bugs us? The word “fine”. Why do you say it’s fine when it sure as hell is not fine? If it’s not fine, don’t tell us it’s fine, because we presume it actually is fine then a few hours later you explode at us about the thing that was apparently “fine” earlier. It was not fine. And it never will be. And what are we supposed to do when you’re in a bad mood? We try to talk or to offer sympathy but nothing works. Do we just throw chocolate at you from a distance and hope for the best? That probably won’t work though because the following day you’ll ask us if you look fat in something — why do you do that? Even if we say no, you don’t believe us and think we’re just saying that to make you feel better. You never look fat. Maybe you just feel bloated or maybe your period is coming soon, but we know not to say the “P” word. That’s another thing we’ll never understand, and we sure as hell don’t want to, so let’s move on from that immediately. Why don’t you allow us to relax quietly with a beer after work? It’s been a big day… we’ve worked hard. Yet we come home to nagging. You want help with something. You want to talk about the day. The day was fine. We worked. That’s it. You think something is up if we don’t want to talk but it was actually fine, not your kind of “fine” but fine as in there was nothing eventful to discuss. June 2017

What you love to discuss with us though are our exes. Why do you want to hear about them? It never makes you feel any better to know another woman once had her hands all over your favourite play toy so you may as well not ask. You ask us so many things you don’t really want to know the answer to and then get upset once we give you the answer. Here’s an idea, don’t ask! And why do you say you have nothing to wear? You literally have triple the amount of clothing as us, with so many options to wear, but whenever we go anywhere you suddenly have nothing to wear? Or if you find something to wear, you complain that it’s uncomfortable? Those heels are crazy high and the dress is stupidly tight (though it does look good!), but we’re willing

The word “fine”. Why do you say it’s fine when it sure as hell is not fine? If it’s not fine, don’t tell us it’s fine, because we presume it actually is fine then a few hours later you explode at us about the thing that was apparently “fine” earlier. It was not fine.

to sacrifice a perve if it means we won’t have to hear constant complaints of being uncomfortable. Lastly, and I may get in trouble for this, but do you know when you’re being a b*tch? Like you’ve gotta know when you’re giving us serious attitude right? You ladies love it, we see that little smirk when you’re being a straight up b*tch. If we weren’t so attracted to you we wouldn’t put up with it. But we couldn’t live without you, though we certainly could live without the 15 pillows on the bed and hundreds of products in the bathroom. Sincerely, Confused men everywhere (that definitely do appreciate women – please don’t forget that!) 44

GET IT I TRAVEL

Luxuriousontravel a budget

Live up the luxurious lifestyle while your wallet takes a smaller hit in places like Thailand, Greece, Vietnam, Cuba, India and Mexico.

hile travel may be the only thing you buy that makes you richer, your bank account certainly won’t feel richer from a luxurious and expensive holiday. But, there are ways to skimp on the expensive and still get the luxury. Here are our top seven tips. Budget – but before you leave If you budget in the months leading up to your holiday, you’ll end up with more money to spend. That means less budgeting while away which will make you feel as if you’re enjoying a more extravagant holiday. Use Skyscanner’s “Everywhere” button Want to jet off somewhere but don’t overly care where? Jump on Skyscanner and enter in your closest airport. You’ll see the cheapest flights to destinations all over the world that you may not have considered before. Go to cheap destinations Cheap destinations mean you can stay luxuriously for less than you’d pay elsewhere. Five star resorts, your own swimming pool, and lavish food. Live up the luxurious lifestyle while your wallet takes a smaller hit in places like Thailand, Greece, Vietnam, Cuba, India and Mexico.

45

Air BnB away For the price of an average apartment you can get fully selfcontained houses, units and flats. It can be a bit hit and miss but if you have a good look at the reviews and images, you can be in luck. You may even have breakfast provided inclusively too! Travel off season Peak season will always be more expensive so travel outside of that. There will be less tourists around to deal with too — luxury by peace anyone? Cheaper accommodation, flights, and deals act as an incentive to get you there. Take advantage of it! Book early or last minute Early bird and last minute deals are a great thing to do if you know you can take a holiday six months away or you’re feeling super spontaneous and want to leave next week. Companies reward both of those behaviours. Cheaper luxuries Luxury doesn’t mean the most expensive activity or hotel. Luxury is whatever makes you feel wealthy and special. Whether that’s buying fresh flowers from a local market for your hotel room, spending the afternoon drinking a cappuccino at a fancy coffee shop or buy a good bottle of wine to enjoy. Whatever your version of low-cost luxury is, do that.

Write down your wishes and take the necessary steps required to make them manifest. H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Some real progress can be made from the 6th once your ruler, Venus, finally enjoys some home territory after a long retrograde cycle.
