A big welcome to the Gold Coast from those of us who call this beautiful place home! Whether this is your first time, or you’re a regular visitor, we hope you enjoy everything our incredible city has to offer. We have put together this handy guide to take with you as you explore the city. There’s so much to see, taste and do here on the Gold Coast and we know you will fall in love with it all, just as we have. Have a fabulous time here! – The Get it Magazine team

CONTENTS MAYOR'S MESSAGE After years of preparation the Gold Coast is stepping into the global spotlight as we stage the 2018 Commonwealth Games. When 1.5 billion viewers around the world tune in, they will see an attractive, confident and very enticing city that offers a mouthwatering array of lifestyles. And why wouldn’t they fall in love with a place that boasts more than 300 days a year of sunshine and well over 57km of golden sandy beaches offering some of the best surf in the world with a backdrop of World Heritage-listed rainforest in our Hinterland? With 2,300 parks, world-class shopping precincts, brilliantly eclectic restaurants, bars and cafes, an edgy craft brewing scene, jaw-dropping theme parks and a built environment that does justice to all the rest, our good fortune does not end there. I know a strong economy is essential to generate the jobs and prosperity that underpin a safe society. We are the engine-room of a $32 billion regional economy with low unemployment. Tourism remains a core element of our Gold Coast way of life and we welcomed more than 1 million international tourists last year, while domestic visitation has shot past 1 million a month. The city’s focus on continual renewal and innovation in our services, facilities and attractions ensures we give our visitors great experiences to take home memories for a lifetime. And none of this is happening by chance. We are working to a comprehensive strategy to ensure Gold Coast is ‘Way Ahead’ and stays there. I hope you enjoy it.

Tourism & Events Queensland - Burleigh Heads

One of the Gold Coast’s best assets is it’s beautiful stretch of coastline. However, ensure you never swim alone or at beaches without patrolled life guards. Popular beaches are patrolled from 8am to 5pm, and will have extended hours during busy periods. Swim between the red and yellow flags; if you don’t see red and yellow flags — don’t swim.

RIDING THE TRAM Stretching from Helensvale to Broadbeach, the light rail (known as G:link) is a great way to get from point A to point B. Your entry ticket will grant Tourism Queensland - Surfers Paradise you free travel on the day of your ticketed event, up until 3am the next day. For all other travel, we recommend purchasing a GO Card — an electronic ticketing system which saves you time and money, compared with your usual single paper ticket. Simply tap on before each ride and tap off afterwards. Your GO Card can also be used on buses and heavy rail services. Do not ride the G:link without a ticket — you will be fined. Services are running on a 24-hour timetable for the Games, with trams departing every 6-30 minutes depending on day and time. For more information on tram times head to:

PARKING YOUR CAR Where possible, plan ahead and use public transport instead of driving. If you must drive, make use of the 13 park and ride locations. Certain venues also have parking available within reasonable walking distance. Most of the Gold Coast is zoned parking, so if you do park, be aware of this to avoid a fine. For more information on park and ride locations plus journey planning for spectators visit:

“Drape yourself in this sensuous velvet top and matching pants. With a longer back and cut outs on the shoulders, it’s easy to wear, perfect for travel and has a sexy swing to it!”

“Street wear chic meets runway fashion with this charcoal spot dress – it’s made from a stretch fabric, is easy to wear and also available in black and white.”

“Black is always seductive and this mesh black tunic shows just enough to keep them guessing. Throw it over tights or pair it with a great pair of heels for instant glam.”

“This look is seriously on trend – the linen and cotton jacket and loose pant are perfect together or can be styled separately with white jeans or a simple white tee shirt. They’re washable, chic and the perfect look for your next getaway!”

Gold Coast designer Helen Grant isn’t afraid to add a little zing, a bit of bling and a whole lot of glam to everything she does. And her stunning designs are no exception. From on-trend street wear, through to chic, sexy statement pieces, Helen’s designs are every bit the daring, unapologetic powerhouse that she is. “All these styles I design myself and there is a little of me in every piece. I focus on the look my customers want and create it with high quality, great fabrics that are easy to wear.” Having travelled extensively and taking inspiration from both the streets and runways of Europe, Helen knows the importance of a versatile wardrobe and how to not let a suitcase compromise style. “I endeavour to create pieces that can mix and match to add pizazz to your wardrobe and keep you looking great, even while you’re jet setting around the world.” See more of Helen’s stunning pieces and accessories, as well as her range from local and international designers, on the cover and pages 10-13 in our shoot with Olympic goldmedallist Brooke Hanson. 2/29 Tedder Avenue, Main Beach | P (07) 5532 0123 Level 1, Marina Mirage, Seaworld Dve Main Beach | P (07) 5532 5758

rooke Hanson OAM is one of Australia’s most recognised athletes. Known for her incredible swimming feats, she has won Olympic gold and silver medals. She’s also had a successful career out of the pool as a television presenter, and was even nominated for a TV Logie.. But with all the ups have come some downs, and, sadly, one of those include the loss of her child, Jack (8 July 2011-3 April 2012), at nine months old to cardiac arrest. Hear how the world champion has faced life and all its challenges with strength and hope. This mum of three doesn’t usually spend her weekday mornings glammed up at Palm Beach Aquatic Centre wearing Helen Grant fashions! How are your mornings usually spent, Brooke?

Like many Gold Coast households, my mornings are spent getting the kids ready for school, pre-school and daily activities. There’s so much to do it makes the swimming days of 4:15am wake up, 6km in the pool, stretch and spa followed by breakfast and coffee look easy! Tell us about those days, what made you want to pursue a career in the pool? I almost drowned twice as a baby, so my parents put me into swimming lessons. I won my first race at the age of 5, it was a 15m freestyle race, but I swam breaststroke and still won. It was a stroke that came so natural to me. When Dad would return from the Olympics and Commonwealth Games with a new swimsuit for me and stories of the Australian team winning medals, it was all I wanted to do!

QUICK QUESTIONS WITH OUR COVER MODEL Suburb you live: Palm Beach Family: Husband Jared Clarke (married in 2007); and children Cooper (age 8); Jack (8 July 2011-3 April 2012); Billy (age 4); and Matilda (age 2) Favourite GC spot: Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club. I’m a thirdgeneration surf life saver and the entire family are members of the club so, to me, it feels like home.

What are your favourite career achievements? The Commonwealth Games in 1994, 2002 and 2006 were all memorable, winning gold and silver medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004 was a highlight as, after missing two Olympic teams, I finally achieved a lifelong dream. My favourite moment was the 2004 World Short Course Championships where I received 6 gold medals, 1 world record, 2 Commonwealth records, 3 Australian records and was named Female Swimmer of the Championships. It was the most incredible week of racing for me with personal best times in every event and a fantastic feeling to be the world’s best. Let’s talk about your son Jack now, what was it like when he was born 12 weeks premature? The day he was born was one of the hardest days of my life. We’d known for two months there were problems, but we were hoping the second round of steroids would get us through another week. The blood flow between us was reversing and I was close to killing him. I was rushed into emergency and had a chance to call Mum and say good bye; it was the toughest conversation I’d ever had, staying strong but thanking her for being the best mum as I didn’t know if I would ever see her again. I spoke to Jared about what I wanted for Cooper and his future, but he refused to hear what I was saying, just telling me that it wasn’t my time and that we would get through this together. I delivered a baby boy via emergency C-section and he weighed 663 grams and was 32 centimetres long. I was 28 weeks and 5 days, but he was severely growth restricted and so our journey in NICU began.

How do you keep fit? I still love swimming here at Palm Beach Aquatic Centre. I also enjoy the group fitness classes – spin, pump, barbell or yoga, as well as having a run and swim at Currumbin Beach, surfing at Currumbin Alley, stand up paddle boarding on Currumbin creek and bike riding. GC2018 events you will be watching: The swimming, athletics, beach volleyball, rugby sevens and closing ceremony. Quote you live by: “Be true to yourself, listen to your inner voice and never give up.”

Get It Magazine | THE GOLD EDITION

So, he was in NICU for 9 months, what were your emotions like? Nothing could prepare us for the journey. I’m a high achiever, a first-born child, that likes to fix and help, and I felt completely out of control. Coping was tough, we took it day by day and, as a family, it was undoubtedly the hardest thing we’ve ever had to go through. Jared and I had a positive and realistic outlook, but it was a roller coaster of emotions. All I thought about was getting Jack’s little toes onto Currumbin beach and, through the tough days when he was in an induced coma, that vision got me through. We celebrated milestones, the first cuddle, the weight gains and first bath. We read him stories, did music therapy and took thousands of photos and videos. No matter how tough things got, we never gave up hope as where there was life, there was hope. He kept fighting until he couldn’t fight anymore. And sadly, Jack did pass away. What was it like for you and Jared? As a mother, it was my greatest fear; you never want to bury a child whether they be still born, live for 9 months, 9 years or 19 years – no words can describe it. Jack’s severe chronic lung disease, along with pulmonary hypertension, all became too much for his little body to bear. Despite his amazing strength, he lost his fight for life after suffering a cardiac arrest. I held Jack for his last breath and could see that he was finally at peace. Jared and I spent the night with him in hospital and got some special time to say goodbye. We washed him, dressed him, wrapped him up, had beautiful photos taken and slept next to him – it was wonderful to have that time. How did you recover from that loss? I believe you don’t ever fully recover. Jared lost his mother to cancer as a teenager and he told me after Jack died that our hearts will feel heavy, and that the heaviness will go with time, but the scar will be in our hearts forever. You move forward as best as you can, and the scar reminds me of how precious life is and how much he was, and is, loved. We have a little shrine to Jack in our home with his ashes, photo, tree of life, his favourite things and a candle. We were given a star in the sky as a gift and every night our family looks for the brightest star. Our kids know that their

brother is looking over them and guiding us through each day. We find this so important for them, particularly our first born, Cooper, who spent every day in the NICU with Jack. You and Jared chose to share your story and raise awareness of premature babies, how are you doing this? Sharing our story has helped us. Everyone deals with death differently, but it has brought us closer together. I’m a proud ambassador of Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, and I’m passionate about spreading the message to all parents of babies born premature or sick that they are not alone. I raise money for the foundation by selling signed copies of my book at speaking engagements and on my website So, three years after Jack you had another boy, Billy, and then finally a girl, Matilda. What was it like to have those two healthy babies after Jack? Both pregnancies after Jack were full of constant testing, anxiety, supplements, great concern for the unknown and high risks. When I delivered two healthy babies it was an incredible feeling. Being able to take Billy and Matilda home and do everything I missed with Jack was truly amazing. I believe they are gifts from Jack. We have some chronic health problems with Billy and we are doing everything as parents to provide him with the best care possible, giving him a chance for a healthy and happy life. Do you feel your little family is complete now? A month after Matilda arrived we left our jobs, sold our home in Melbourne, donated many of our belongings and moved to the Gold Coast. Call it a sea change, a lifestyle change or a calming change, but we wanted to raise our family near the beach, as we are all water babies. It’s beautiful to wake up each morning and see the five of us so happy. So yes, I’m content and feel complete. I have a wonderful husband, four children – three here and our angel – and a coastal lifestyle. The lessons learnt from Jack and the NICU continue to pave the way for us as our little family finds peace and happiness on the Gold Coast. THE GOLD EDITION | Get It Magazine

The wrong time

It’s time to face an uncomfortable truth ladies, we never meet the right person at the wrong time, writes Get it’s Hayley Bogaard We gather our girlfriends together; spilling our souls like we spill the cheap wine we pour into our glasses. “He’s perfect but it’s just not the right time,” we rationalise, “Maybe if it was in 12 months, or a few years. It’s just the timing, that’s all.” The girls nod into their own glasses of wine, silently united by a common experience of an ill-fated relationship that succumbed to bad timing. One of them met the man of her dreams just a month before he moved back to England for a career opportunity. Another met her soul mate when he was in a relationship with someone else. One relationship ended because a partner wasn’t ready to get serious and another because they were getting serious too quickly. So why do we surrender to the constraints of time, accepting it as an obstinate third party of our relationships? We are so willing to compromise the potential in defence of our time. We rationalise that he is the right guy; it’s just the wrong time.

But the truth is girls — and get ready because this one is going to sting — you never meet the right person at the wrong time. The people we meet at the wrong time are simply the wrong people. Stop for a moment and let that sink in. Your failed relationship is not a cruel injustice, delivered by the hands of a ticking clock. It’s the culmination of every one of your decisions, however subconscious they may be. Truth be told, when we pass up someone because the timing is wrong, we are really saying that we don’t want to give our time to that person. Maybe it stems from a fear 26

of compromising our independence, taking a risk or changing our status quo. Maybe it’s just convenient for us to hide behind the veil of bad timing. But if you’re really, deeply, honest with yourself, you will know that there will never be a perfect time… when the stars and planets align, and every piece of your complex puzzle falls neatly into place. But that’s the beauty of humanity. We will never fit perfectly, but maybe — just maybe — one day you’ll meet the right person who will fit you perfectly. It’s inevitable that we will meet many more wrong people than right people. But cherish the wrong people too. They aren’t fundamentally bad, just wrong for you. And, despite how it stings, it’s unlikely that they mean to hurt you. It’s the classic, ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ line dressed up with the trappings of time. But there is beauty to be found in all this tragedy. If you have met the wrong person, at the wrong time, then that simply means that the right person is still out there for you to meet. And that, in itself, is exciting and exhilarating. The promise of what’s to come. When the timing — and the person — is just perfect. So ladies, gather the girls, pour the cheap wine and remind each other that the right person will come along, at just the right time. And that is something worth drinking to!

your fit FINDING

We all know that athletes are seriously fit, so how can you steal some of that ‘fit’ for yourself? Before you think of jumping out of your seat and onto the track to grab an athlete in the hopes that some of their magical fitness will rub off on you, think again. We don’t mean actually steal some of their fitness, but rather, take inspiration from it. (Otherwise you could end up in jail — which is probably not how you expected to spend your time on the Coast!) If you’re anything like us, January is your fittest month; you hit the gym, go running, eat clean and swear this is the fittest and healthiest you have ever been, that is, until January 5 rolls around and your restrictive, perhaps ridiculous, regime comes undone with cake, alcohol, takeaway foods or all of the above. While we don’t expect to see you participating in the next Commonwealth Games (although you are welcome to prove us wrong!), it’s a great moment in time to appreciate how fit we humans can be, how much we can push our bodies and that, unlike you on January 5, we can get past excuses and achieve great things.

1. Sign up for your favourite sport: Do you love watching the swimming? Or athletics? Or perhaps the cycling? None of those are superhuman activities, although with the the way the athletes perform them, you’d be mistaken for thinking they are! But you can do any of those sports on your own, or even train for a local marathon or race in your city. Don’t just sit around watching; try it for yourself. Learning to love exercise is half the battle, so if you already enjoy watching a sport, it’s a no-brainer that that’s the one you should try. s

2. Set yourself a goal: Athletes have a date in mind that they have to be performing at their peak – that’s their target. A goal is also a great way to motivate yourself. It doesn’t have to be a local race, it could be an event you’d like to lose 5kg by, a certain number on the scale or a measurement on your body you want to reach, or even a certain number of times per week you aim to workout. Set your goal and stick to it, with the same determination as your favourite athlete! 3. Take inspiration from others: Allow the athletes to inspire you in all aspects of your life. They dedicate their lives to their sport, it becomes second nature to them. So, make fitness your second nature, dedicate yourself to moving more and eating better, and it will get easier with each day. Before long, it will be a habit and something you cannot live without. They say it takes, on average, two months before a new behaviour becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. Dedicate yourself for the next 66 days! 4. Remember that you’re only cheating on yourself: Winners are grinners, that’s how the saying goes, not cheaters. Our amazing athletes didn’t get to where they are by cheating, and cheating will do a disservice to your fitness too. Skipping that workout (or whole week) or eating junk food too often is cheating, and it will only set you back. The only real person affected by your cheating is you, so keep yourself accountable. 5. Make your family proud: Just as our athletes have their friends and family on the sideline, yours are too (even if it’s just an imaginary sideline). Think of how proud they will be when you do something for yourself and accomplish your health and fitness goals. They will cheer you on every step of the way and remind you of what’s important when you forget. Do it for your cheer squad and number #1 fans (you may even want to consider handing out autographs!). And with these tips in mind, we hope your time on the Gold Coast inspires you to become the fittest, healthiest and happiest version of yourself! You can even get started while you are here; we have plenty of great activities you can participate in as well as gorgeous parks and walking trails you can visit for a workout.

SECURITY THREAT? How safe are you on social media? Get it’s Hayley Bogaard exposes just how revealing your happy snaps really are

kay, I’m sorry Madonna, but we are no longer living in a material world. We are living in a social media world. And in social media world, the saying goes: picture or it didn’t happen. No longer is it enough to simply eat your brunch, you must photograph it, filter it and post it. And if you don’t post a mirror selfie in your Lorna Jane tights, did you even work out? So in a world so consumed by images, how much do you really think about what you’re posting? You may be surprised at how these seemingly innocent photos, could be revealing a whole lot more than you ever intended!

BOARDING PASS Look up #boardingpass on Instagram and you’ll find over 82,000 posts. Who knew it was a thing, right? While you may be tempted to post a photo of your boarding pass to brag about your adventures, think again. With your boarding pass details, savvy users may be able to access your full itinerary, frequent flyer logins, and even credit card details. Think covering up your personal details will solve that problem? Wrong. The barcode on your boarding pass also contains all your personal booking details and can be read easily using an online barcode reader. You’ve been warned! YOUR WORKSPACE It’s a Thursday morning, you’re on your second cup of coffee and productivity is at a peak. You take a quick photo of your 36

Get It Magazine | THE GOLD EDITION

workspace with your cute notepad, laptop and kitschy coffee cup and post it online. Perfectly innocent, right? Well, one blogger found out how dangerous this can be when, after posting a picture of her home office set up, her followers quickly pointed out that by zooming in on the photo, her diary and post-it notes were clearly visible – featuring phone numbers, personal information, client names and invoices being chased. Gulp! SCHOOL UNIFORMS The kids are heading back to school and look adorable in their school uniforms – complete with oversized backpacks and dorky straight-brimmed hat – so you take the traditional back to school snap and post it to Facebook. You’re a proud mumma! Well, you’ve just announced where your child will be 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Does that sound safe to you? No, me neither. GIFT CARDS AND CREDIT CARDS Learn this valuable lesson from those who have learned it before you. In 2016, a Perth woman decided to sell an unwanted makeup voucher online to make some extra cash for a holiday. She took a few snaps, uploaded them to Facebook and within minutes the $94 value was stolen. Avoid posting any images that include barcodes or reference numbers., as these can be used easily used in an online store. Oh and when it comes to posting a photo of your credit card, the rule is simple: don’t.

Meet some local celebrities who call the Gold Coast home

The Gold Coast isn’t only loved by the locals, it’s also loved by celebrities, both born here and who visit the area. Some of the stars born here include Margot Robbie, Cody Simpson, Ally Simpson, Luke Mitchell and Kurt Coleman. And, Iggy Azalea is from a little south of the Gold Coast, born in the scenic town of Mullumbimby. Some big Hollywood names have enjoyed all the Gold Coast has to offer, and who could blame them? This city has it all! Here’s where a few of them were seen; • Miley Cyrus and her Australian fiancé Liam Hemsworth were spotted enjoying lunch with friends at Burleigh restaurant Rick Shores • Palazzo Versace has enticed many stars with its opulence including Mariah Carey, U2, Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West and Snoop Dog • The One Direction boys have tried a surf at our golden beaches • Hugh Jackman was spotted at Little Truffle in Mermaid Beach • Orlando Bloom was seen caffeinating at Broadbeach’s Elk cafe • Tom Hiddleston was snapped sitting at the Social Eating House in Broadbeach • Jason Momoa was seen riding a bike shirtless in Nobby’s Beach • The Foo Fighters have dined at Moo Moo’s, a Broadbeach steak restaurant • Taylor Swift posed for a selfie with a kangaroo at Paradise Country and then headed to Warner Bros Movie World with Blake Lively

The young Australian actress, known for her role in H2OJust Add Water, can’t get enough of the sun, fun and food here on the Gold Coast. What do you love about the Gold Coast? I moved to the Gold Coast from Tasmania when I was 4 years old, and it has everything! Some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, stunning rainforests and hinterlands, great shopping, nightlife and amazing bars and restaurants! Favourite place? Burleigh Headland. I love going to the hill for picnics and walking around the headland to Tallebudgera Creek. What’s a great Gold Coast day look like to you? Burleigh Headland, obviously! A swim at Tallebudgera Creek, a surf at Currumbin Alley, a bite to eat at Lucky Bao, some dessert at Cowch, followed by a shop at Pacific Fair and a night cap at Aloha Bar in Broadbeach. Sounds like a pretty good day to me!

The radio personality at 102.9 Hot Tomato holidayed regularly on the Gold Coast growing up and now calls this place home. Why do you love the Gold Coast? The weather, massive doses of Vitamin D and the sea are obviously the biggest draw card. But I think that the beautiful stretch of sand makes everyone who lives here happy and grateful, and living in a community that has that vibe every day is hard to beat. Favourite place? It’s Rainbow Bay Beach for me. My family are so biased because all our happy memories are there. It’s such a family beach because usually a little beach pool develops which is great for the little ones. What must someone do when visiting the Gold Coast? The beach! End of story. It’s free and, if you listen to the life savers, it’s safe. Once the kids get on the sand they have so much fun they never want to leave. The hours tick by and before you know it they want to go home to bed and sleep all night!

CHARLI ROBINSON This bubbly Australian television and radio presenter, well known for her role in Hi-5 as well as on travel TV program Getaway, has called the Gold Coast home for six years. Why do you love the Gold Coast? It’s the people that make the Gold Coast so special, as well as our breathtaking views! People care about each other and still say good morning – just stroll along the beach in the morning and you’ll see what I mean! Favourite place? I do adore D-Bah, sitting on the hill with a smoothie from Coolangatta, watching the surfing and the stunning view. Recommendations for visitors to the Gold Coast? Natural Arch is a lovely nature walk and all our beaches are spectacular, but check out Snapper Rocks or Burleigh Headland. I like Mermaid Surf Club a lot for meals and Pacific Fair for shopping!

CASEY BARNES This Australian country and acoustic music artist, who has performed alongside the likes of Mariah Carey, Lady Antebellum and Bryan Adams, has called the Gold Coast home for 20 years. Why do you love the Gold Coast? I love the people, the beaches, the weather and being able to do what I love most (performing music) in my own back yard. Favourite place? I’d have to say living in Currumbin, you’ve got the best of both worlds. Living amongst nature but also having the most incredible beaches, cafes and restaurants within a kilometre from your house — it’s the perfect spot! What are some places people must visit while on the Gold Coast? I’m an ambassador for the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary so I’d have to say it’s a must if you’re visiting the Gold Coast. Don’t forget to suss out some amazing music venues like the Soundlounge, Miami Marketta and NightQuarter!

born to box Gold Coast women’s boxer Skye Brittany Nicolson is gearing up for the Games. The 22-year-old Yatala resident is excited that the Games are on her home turf so she can feel the support of her friends and family, as well as all of the other Aussie spectators! BOXING IN THE BLOOD I started boxing when I was 12. My older brothers boxed, and my family was always involved in boxing, so I grew up around the sport and decided to give it a go. Turned out I was pretty good at it! FINDING OUT SHE MADE GC2018 I had to win the 2017 Australian Titles to qualify for the Games so winning the final was how I secured my place on the team. The first feeling was honestly just relief, as I had a lot of pressure and expectations on myself. The excitement and happiness quickly followed, and I feel very proud to be representing Australia at the Games. ON HOME TURF I am so excited that I’ll be competing in home Games. Having all my family and friends there to support me and cheer me on, as well as the Aussies getting behind the Australian team, will create such an incredible atmosphere to compete and win in.

SPORTING BACKGROUND: This champion boxer won a bronze medal at the 2016 Women’s World Championships in Kazakhstan, and she has represented Australia since 2011 as a junior, youth and elite — and competed in over 100 fights!

FAVOURITE GOLD COAST SPOT I love taking my dogs to the Gold Coast Seaway. FIGHTER’S MINDSET I always tell myself the hard work is done, trust the process. You’ve done the hard part, now it’s time to go out there and have some fun! Train hard, fight easy! GOING FOR GOLD The whole experience is going to be amazing. I’m hoping to show Australia what I’m made of, make memories and, of course, win the gold medal. 40

with PRINCIPAL GRIMES A.B. Paterson College – Stepping Into the Future If ever there was an historical figure who could serve as a visionary role model for younger generations, it is Andrew Barton Paterson, of whom our A.B. Paterson College is named after. Banjo was a man well ahead of his times. While most of his contemporaries toiled away in jobs for life, Banjo adapted his skills to a range of varied careers – much like the students of today will do in the future. He was a poet, an author, a solicitor, a journalist, a war correspondent, a clerk, a composer and a soldier. In this age of rapid technological change, it has never been more fitting that our College proudly takes and maintains the name of this iconic Australian legend. Predictions from economic forecasters remain that the children entering primary school today will have as many as 40 jobs and 10 career changes in their lifetime, and that most children will end up working in job types that have yet to be developed.

So how do we teach our children to thrive and flourish in a world that we cannot even imagine yet? Researchers and thought-leaders seem unanimous in their response to such a question – our students, as they prepare for the future workforce and to be future citizens, need to be adaptable, flexible, creative problem-solvers, excellent in communication, collaborative and be willing to review, seek ongoing improvement and cope with change. Our College recognised this need some years ago and developed and embedded strong Prep to Year 12 curriculum programs of contemporary learning skills to provide the very skillset our future citizens will need. These skills are essential for our young people and provide the basis for effective human engagement, interaction and personal development – the key to future success. Our College’s innovative teaching programs are supported by world-class facilities, including re-developed Junior School classrooms that boast some of the most amazing and unique educational spaces ever seen. Our new major building development at A.B. Paterson College, sprawling three levels and approximately 4,500m2 in size, is one of the most outstanding and well-researched educational facilities to be enjoyed by our College and the wider community. delivery of our internationally renowned and research-based pedagogy – Teaching for Understanding. This magnificent building will be a state-of-the-art learning precinct, featuring a magical rainforest-themed playground, three Pre-Prep classrooms, an Outside School Hours Care facility, a cafĂŠ and film studio. Upper levels will feature a Years 4 to 6 Library, dedicated academic research space for staff, flexible learning spaces, a deck with a view to the threestorey atrium, and a stunning 160 seat multi-purpose lecture theatre. Notwithstanding our outstanding facilities, it is our leading and dynamic educational programs, our dedicated and highly qualified staff and the many varied opportunities that provide the essential A.B. experience. It is this unique experience that enables our students to be better prepared for the world beyond our College gates. Interestingly, one aspect that seems to be missing from research into our future workforce is the development of self through leadership, moral principles, and a strong sense of personal values. These essential human qualities are a clear distinction between man and machine. At A.B. Paterson College, we recognise that these personal attributes have never been more important.

Students need to be adaptable, flexible, creative problem-solvers, excellent in communication, collaborative and be willing to review, seek ongoing improvement and cope with change. Our College has grown from a rich history bathed in the Australian heritage, into one of the leading educational and most forward-thinking institutions in our country. From our leading pedagogy and purposeful consideration of educational research, to our caring pastoral approach, based upon principles of mindfulness and positive psychology, our College enables all students to achieve their very best. Steeped in traditional values, set apart by a future-focused approach, our College is so much more than an academic school. If you would like to know more about our A.B. experience I invite you to be our guest at our College Open Day Tuesday 1 May, or join us for a College tour, watch my video blog, Talk Times with Principal Grimes, and connect to our College Facebook page. one last time FOR AUSTRALA

Meet Kurt Fearnley, 37, who never let the fact that he was born without the lower portion of his spine hold him back. From backyard games of football to crawling along the Great Wall of China and now competing in GC2018, Kurt is a world champion in and out of his racing wheelchair. A LOVE OF PUSHING THE LIMITS My first marathon was at age 19 to qualify for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. After qualifying for the main field, I passed out half way through the race but found a way to finish in about 30th position. From that moment, I knew it was for me! There’s something about the marathon that is special, the hard work getting to the start line, then the hour and half pushing your body to its limit. I love it. RACING FOR A HOME CROWD I’ve been lucky enough to race all around the world but there’s nothing like racing in front of a home crowd. It was an honour to be part of the bid team for these Games nearly 10 years ago, and staying a part of its development through various committees, as a Games ambassador and baton bearer. It’ll probably be the last time I pull on the green and gold for Australia, and to do it on home soil, there’s no greater honour. GOLD COAST VIBE I’m a regular to the Gold Coast Marathon and love experiencing the festival atmosphere each year when thousands converge on Southport to reach their running goals – the vibe is incredible! RACE MINDSET There’s a lot of self-talk, reminding myself of the hard work I’ve put in to get my body ready, and then it’s just about hitting the limit and staying there for as long as I can. An hour and half in the chair can go surprisingly quickly. BEST PARTS OF GC2018 The Australian community coming together through sport is a great thing. The GC2018 will have the largest Para-sport program ever and to have it integrated with full medal status is something we should be very proud of. There’ll be 100 or so family and friends at my events and to race in front of them, with them, one last time, will be special, medal or no medal. A medal would be nice though! MOTTO TO LIVE BY If an opportunity comes your way, ask yourself ‘why not?’ rather than ‘why would I?’ and give it a crack!

WATER SAFETY FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN Tourism & Events Queensland - Surfers Paradise

Having your baby or young child attend a drowning prevention program should be your priority as a parent. Children need to develop a healthy respect of the water, as well as skills that will assist their confidence and ability in the pool. Your ‘Under 5’ can attain a high degree of Independent Drowning Prevention Skills which will allow them to enjoy the water and all the activities they can do in it. Start them young because you can even achieve this with toddlers if they are taught the right way! Below is a checklist for your child to see where they are at in their Independent Drowning Prevention Skills, so you can address any areas where their skills lack.

These skills are all taught in good Drowning Prevention programs. Two lessons per week, with no breaks, is necessary to see results. Start as young as possible so you leave nothing to chance! Six months old is a perfect age to commence. The earlier a child is taught these skills, the safer and more confident they will be around aquatic environments. Children, in particular those under five years of age, are the most vulnerable people in our population at risk of drowning. Don’t wait until they are at school! And remember, nothing prevents drowning like adult supervision! For more information or to book visit

CAN YOUR CHILD... • FLOAT INDEPENDANTLY for 30 seconds or more in rough water? • Paddle independently, rolling onto their backs to float? • Swim without floaties or back bubbles? • Swim and lift their head to breath? • Jump into a pool – and paddle independently back to the side of the pool? • Tread water with their head above water? • Comfortably swim dressed in clothes and shoes? (Children need to experience the feeling of being in the water with the extra weight of being fully clothed.)

The Gold Coast is famous for its surfing and the world-champion surfers who call it home! It’s not uncommon to see surfing legends and icons Mick Fanning, Steph Gilmore, Piper Harrison or Alyssa Lock out on the breaks. Hear more about one of these champion surfers, Alyssa, as well as what you need to know if you want to hit the waves.

5 MINS WITH PRO SURFER ALYSSA LOCK who calls the Gold Coast home You first started surfing at Snapper Rocks at age 6, what made you fall in love with the sport and who got you into it? I was a beach baby right from the start. My first taste of the ocean was heading down to the beach with my family while my Dad would go surfing. He eventually taught me to ride a bodyboard, but I couldn’t help wanting to be out further where he would surf. He eased me into surfing on swells in the river and I fell head over heels for the sport. How did you get from there to where you are today? I joined Snapper Rocks Surf Rider’s Club when I turned 6 and got confident in the ocean. Joining the club was a huge stepping stone to where I am today because it allowed me to meet lots of friends to surf with on the weekend and gave me my first taste of the competitive side of the sport. From there it was a lot of training with my coaches in and out of the water.

Gold Coast’s Pro Surfer Alyssa Lock

LEARN THE LINGO Barrel: When the wave is hollow when it is breaking Blown out: When onshore wind turns the surf into unrideable, messy waves Choppy: When the surface of the ocean is rough/bumpy Foamies: Whitewater waves ideal for beginners Grommet: A young or inexperienced surfer In the Soup: When a surfer is in the white foam of the wave after the wave has broken Lull: When the ocean goes flat between sets and everyone sits around waiting for the waves Offshore: When the wind at a surf break is blowing off the shore creating ideal surfing conditions Onshore: When the wind is blowing towards the land ruining the waves Rip: A strong current heading out to sea; can be dangerous for surfers and swimmers alike Wipe-out: Falling off your board on a wave

If you are an experienced surfer, or at least know what you are doing, check out the best breaks. If you’re new to the Gold Coast it’s always best to surf where other surfers are as they are familiar with the conditions. Surfing etiquette applies when surfing these breaks, no dropping in on other surfer’s waves! If you’re a beginner, hit up a local surf school — like Walkin’ on Water!

What are your favourite surfing achievements to date? Winning the Roxy Pro Trials in early 2017, which allowed me to qualify for the Championship Tour (CT) event held at Snapper Rocks and verse the current number one in the world which was Tyler Wright. It had always been my dream since a very young age to compete in the CT event at my home break Snapper Rocks, and I really didn’t expect to achieve it so early on in my career. Why is the Gold Coast a great spot to surf? The Gold Coast has so many great surf spots that are in easily accessible locations. My personal favourites would have to be the world-class waves of Snapper Rocks and Duranbah Beach, but if you’re looking for a great wave to learn to surf on, I would recommend The Alley point break (Currumbin) because it’s a perfect and simple wave for starting out on.

• Snapper Rocks • Kirra Beach • Rainbow Bay • Duranbah Beach • Currumbin Beach • Currumbin Alley • Burleigh Heads

What’s your favourite place on the Gold Coast outside of the water? Raw Energy café because they do great smoothies and juices, which are perfect for an early morning kickstart or good after a long day spent at the beach. What’s your tip for those who want to learn to surf? Practice your surfing not only in the water but out of it too. I would look in a mirror and mimic my paddling and pop-up on the board and see what wasn’t technically right, and try again until I did it correctly. What’s one surfing term used frequently on the Gold Coast? A common phrase is saying “the surf is pumping” which means the waves are really good today. This is said a lot because it’s very common to have great waves on the Gold Coast!

SWIMMING, CYCLING AND RUNNING HIS WAY TO Meet triathlete, Matthew Hauser, 19, who lives in Mermaid Waters, right here on the Gold Coast. Having been living and training here for more than two years, Matt’s excited to compete in backyard with the home crowd spirit to cheer him on

TRIATHLETE IN TRAINING I started doing triathlons at around 12 years of age. I was previously doing cross country and athletics — there was a strong community triathlon scene where I grew up in Hervey Bay. I tried the sport and loved the variety of different challenges it posed physically and mentally. HOW IT FELT TO BE ANNOUNCED AS A GC2018 ATHLETE It was a great relief and I was hit with a wave of excitement. At the start of 2017, I was thinking I had a slim chance for a spot, but as the year progressed I improved by leaps and bounds, and it became a massive possibility. To share the news with family and friends was very exciting as well, it was a time for celebration but also a moment of real motivation and inspiration.

In 2017 Matt secured two World Titles including the Mixed Team Relay in Germany with Team Australia and the Individual Junior title in the Netherlands. He also won an Elite ITU World Cup race at the start of the year in China. And now he’s ready to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games!

I try to block out any external pressure and don’t think about the end result of the race, instead I tick off some key processes throughout the race. There’s so many variables in a triathlon, so you have to stay alert and either create or take opportunities when they come. I have a rough idea of how I’m going to attack a race at the start but with a readiness to adapt.

FAVOURITE SPOT ON THE GOLD COAST Burleigh is a great spot for families to relax and it has got some nice beaches and also the headland. There’s some really nice places to go for a bite to eat and a drink around Nobby’s Beach. A few of my favourite cafes would have to be All-Time Coffee, Double Barrel and also Quade & Co in Miami.

CHASING A MEDAL FOR AUSTRALIA The honour of representing Australia in my own backyard, especially at such a young age, is massive. If I can execute my race plan and give everything I’ve got out on the course for Australia, that would be a success in my eyes. Ultimately, I want to chase a medal for my country, whether that be individually and/or with the team in the Mixed Teams Relay race.
