Elbow Grease and Dirty Hands Do-it-yourself activities visitors will By Heidi Bethel

Can I tell you a secret from behind the scenes?

Meghan Burk, our vice president of operations, and I have been trying to convince publisher Todd Poth that readers would love to hear about the awesome options for DIY in Reno/Tahoe. We begged. We pleaded. And … he caved. (Insert maniacal chuckle here.) So this better be good. No pressure, right?! Here goes.

Crafted mementos

With three locations in Reno you’ll find frozen goodness at Yogurt Beach. Featuring a wall lined with cool flavor options and endless sweets, this is the perfect topping on our DIY tour. I opted for a frosty take on some serious s’mores — toasted marshmallow froyo, graham crumble, a few types of chocolate candy and hot fudge syrup to finish. Yum. If you experience any of these great interactive activities during your vacation, be sure to let us know @getawayrenotahoe. What a fun way to remember your trip to Reno/Tahoe!

getawayrenotahoe @getawayrenotahoe getawayrenotahoe @getawayrt

Create a little something to remember your trip by at a few local shops. Wildwood Makers Market in South Lake offers Etsyinspired workshops in the charming store filled with wares from local artists. They schedule private group events too. At Beads Etc. you’ll find thousands of colorful charms from around the world. This place is a jewelry crafters dream.; The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is housed in the building where the longest operating brewery was established. Here you can brush up on your drawing, painting, photography, even zentangle during a jam-packed class schedule. In Reno, The Wedge Ceramics Studio is a place to get some dirt under your fingernails. Check out their Wednesday Night Open Throw or Kids and Clay classes, plus many more events on their website. The Clay Canvas and Playful Potter are both great options for some ceramic painting fun. Make an enchanted terrarium at The Nest where they have a station setup with everything you need for the miniature gardens — grab a few river rocks or slivers of driftwood for that Sierra touch.; theclaycanvas. com;; And get hands on at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum with exhibits like Build It!, Little Discovery and the Art Alcove.

Tinctured concoctions What goes better with a little watercolor than a glass of the good stuff? Crafted Palette in downtown Reno serves a delicious menu of coffee, cocktails and nibbles while patrons get busy putting paint on the canvas. Looking to yield a paintbrush in South Lake? Head to Lake Tahoe Paint & Sip for a colorfully good time.;

Culinary creativity Want complete freedom with your pizza pie? Head to Døugh Custom Pizza in South Lake Tahoe. Here you can choose from whole wheat, traditional white or gluten-free crust, five sauces, six cheeses and over 30 fresh toppings. On a recent visit, I combined the kale pesto and alfredo atop a whole wheat dough with what seemed like an entire garden of veggies, artisan mozzarella and chicken. It was delicious and big enough to save some because there’s nothing better than leftover pizza. getaway reno/tahoe • 13

Snow, sleet or shine Make the best out of your wintertime Reno/Tahoe day By Heidi Bethel

With the arid high desert and alpine terrain, the weather can go from balmy to blustery in no time. Here you’ll find some great activities keeping the ever-changing forecast in mind.

Blizzardly pastimes The days that locals adore, when Mother Nature means business, your best bet is to stay indoors. Luckily Reno/Tahoe hosts a plethora of fun options for the whole family. Looking to bring some of those outdoor interests inside? Head to Woodward Tahoe in Truckee where you can ski and snowboard sans snow. Enjoy foam pits, Olympic-size trampolines, parkour and skate ramps fit for a good practice session. If circling around a track at 45mph is your style, then be sure to experience the high-speed indoor karts at Need 2 Speed in Reno. The electric karts zoom from zero-to-40 in less than five seconds as racers twist and turn around the track. Plus they have a fun black light mini golf course, too.;

Reno area museums are a great option for some educational play. The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum presents several tailored exhibits for all ages including their Inside Out: an Anatomy Experience and Da Vinci’s Corner. Hotrods, vintage and Hollywood favorites are what you’ll find at the National Automobile Museum. Or head to the Wilbur D. May Museum to enjoy the ethnographic collection of historic artifacts from all over the world. Make the Nevada Museum of Art a stop on the tour to view original exhibitions by esteemed artists.;;;

For some carnival games and spectacular shows, head to The Midway at Circus Circus Hotel Casino Reno. Having just finished an impressive renovation, here you’ll find pretty much any carnival and arcade game out there. Be sure to checkout a few of the circus acts where you’ll be wowed by dancers, balancing duos and a whole pack of trained dogs. Boomtown Fun Center at Boomtown Casino and Hotel is filled

with over 200 video and redemption games, mini golf, a bounce house and some seriously fun rides — hop on the Rodeo Rider, Flight Simulator, Covered Wagon Ferris Wheel and (my favorite) the Antique Carousel. circusreno. com; Want something a bit more hands on? Stop by Reno Guns & Range. This newish indoor training and shooting facility caters to all levels of gun handlers with an impressive showroom, live fire lanes and real-life simulation room. Wasting Arrows Indoor Archery is a bullseye for armament excitement in Reno. Here professionals will teach you how to hit a variety of targets, including flying objects in their trap archery course. Or head to any one of the great bowling alleys like Grand Sierra Resort Bowling Center in Reno, Tahoe Bowl in South Lake Tahoe, and Wink’s Silver Strike Lanes in Gardnerville.; wastingarrows. com;;;

Blue bird bliss Known as the beautiful sunny day after an overnight snowfall, the blue bird day is the perfect time to hit the slopes or plan other outdoor adventures where you can enjoy the crisp air, clear blue sky and fresh fallen snow. At Camp Richardson Historic Resort the snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails are awe-inspiring. With views spanning the majestic mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe, this is an experience to beat. Didn’t bring the right gear? Head to their Mountain Sports Center for everything you’ll need for a great day outside. How about a bird’s-eye view of the area? SoaringNV will take you high in the sky in a glider over the Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay. For an even more adrenalinepumping flight opt for the Tahoe Wild Ride packed with rolls, loops and even inverted flying!

As they say, “Get hooked,” with Tahoe Sport Fishing Co. offering an unforgettable Lake Tahoe day out. Experienced captains are ready to help you troll, drift and jig your way to some great catches. With warm heated cabins and hot beverages for the whole family, this activity is available year round. Depending on the season, you just may angle mackinaw (a.k.a. lake trout), rainbow trout, brown trout and kokanee salmon.

A light snow day Whether it’s a misty morning or nighttime dusting of the good stuff, there are plenty of ways to spend a day with some elemental variety. How about a sleigh ride? For over 40 years, Borges Sleigh Rides has offered this enchanting way to experience Lake Tahoe. Pulled by 2,000-pound Belgian draft horses, this is a fun experience for the family or a great option for a romantic date. Get on the lake with Lake Tahoe Cruises. Able to accommodate 500 passengers, the M.S. Dixie II is the largest cruising vessel in South Lake Tahoe. Board one of their daytime cruises, dinner cruises and private charters for stunning views of the lake, Emerald Bay and Fannett Island. The indoor multi-level cabin is climate controlled for those chilly days and the outdoor vantages are beautiful. Yearning for some snowy action? Zephyr Cove Snowmobile Center offers exciting rides on

the Tahoe Rim Trail. Climb to some of the highest peaks on their morning, afternoon, evening and full moon rides. Or, head for some inflatable fun at the tubing hills and more thrilling snowmobile rides around the track with Tahoe Snowmobiles. With three locations, Tahoe Snowmobiles has ride equipment safe enough for the kids to take a turn or two in the driver’s seat with mom or dad on board. aspx; Tie into your favorite skates to perfect your double axel triple toe loop at the Heavenly Village Ice Skating Rink in South Lake Tahoe, Squaw Valley’s Olympic Ice Pavilion, and the Reno Aces Ice Rink in the Freight House District in downtown Reno. And try your hand at curling at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.;;; For the thrill of mountain climbing without the mountains, BaseCamp at Whitney Peak Hotel boasts the world’s largest climbing wall scaling the side of the hotel tower. During those wet, chilly days, the indoor Bouldering Park is the main attraction. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, they also have a schedule filled with yoga and boot camp classes. No matter the weather, Reno/Tahoe is the wintertime adventure-seekers play place. Get out, explore and be sure to make the best of everyday!

Vacation Like a Pro

Smaine goes with a local small chain favorite, Red Hut Café, which has locations in South Lake Tahoe, Stateline, Carson City and Reno. He describes the fare as, “Good diner-style food with healthy servings to keep you crushing the slopes all day long.” If he’s in a rush, he opts for a quick coffee and breakfast burrito from Keys Café to eat on the way up to the hill.; Bowman suggests a stop into The Divided Sky, which opens at 2 p.m. every day and is hopping through the night. She describes it as a “true ski town bar with some amazing food.”

By Diane Dye Hansen

Travel like a champ

Much like Los Angeles grows movie stars, Reno/Tahoe grows Olympic athletes. Jamie Anderson and Maddie Bowman both took home Olympic gold in Sochi, Anderson in the inaugural women’s slopestyle event and Bowman in halfpipe. Both women grew up in Meyers, affectionately dubbed “Tahoe Paradise.” Kyle Smaine is the standing FIS World Champion in halfpipe and his sights are firmly set on joining the US Olympic team. He grew up in South Lake Tahoe and still lives there.

All three athletes ski at Sierra-at-Tahoe, a favorite resort of both locals and visitors. Locals tend to keep powder day spots to themselves, but Smaine is all about sharing his favorite spot and tips on how to get the most out of it.

All three have something in common — their dream started right where you are vacationing. We caught up with them during their global quests for the pow pow to give you a champion’s perspective on how to vacation in our beautiful area.

Nosh like a pro Food was an important topic for all three athletes. It’s fuel for the day and it’s essential to get the right stuff in before heading to the slopes. Anderson is all in on Freshies, which she describes as “a great island style restaurant in South Lake Tahoe” with “lots of organic and local foods.” Her favorite quick stop is Freebird. She raves, “They make the best chai I’ve ever had! It’s worth stopping in for a Freebird treat!” We recommend getting one of their super smoothies, which are packed with power ingredients like mate, cacao, raw goji powder, and everything you need to conquer the day.;

“If you happen to be in Tahoe for a powder day, you definitely need to do yourself a favor and head to Sierra-at-Tahoe to ski Huckleberry Canyon. It’s a little bit of extra work to get back to the lift, but you’ll think you’re on a private powder trip. It doesn’t get tracked out for days after a storm. I can almost guarantee you’ll still find untracked powder stashes. Powder to the people!” he says.

Capture It All Wherever you go, make sure your cell phone is charged or you have a camera ready to go at a moment’s notice. Smaine recommends a year-round trek (off skis) to watch the sunset from the top of Cave Rock. “Grab your jacket, gloves, and a six-pack and let Tahoe’s natural beauty put on a show for you. It’s free and no picture does it justice.” Anderson raves about Emerald Bay. “It’s definitely a site to see. Really beautiful and elegant. I love hanging in the bay, preferably on a boat, but paddle boarding is fun too!” She also loves bringing friends to places like Fallen Leaf Lake, Angora Lakes, or up Mount Tallac. It’s definitely a reason to come back and visit Tahoe in the summer, as well. None of the athletes were shy about bragging about the place they call home. Smaine summarizes it perfectly, “Whether it is skiing, snowboarding, biking, rock climbing, hiking, or pretty much any outdoor activity, it is all right here in my backyard and all of it is world class.” You heard him! Get out there and explore some of our local athletes’ favorite spots.

Marvelous Meat-filled Meals Top steakhouses to visit this winter By Alicia Sontag

topped with wild mushrooms. The manager and sommelier highly recommends a heavy merlot or cabernet sauvignon to pair with either dish. The desert, a Jack Daniel’s whiskey and coke bread pudding, wraps up the meal in a delightfully warm winter hug that will leave you loosening your belt loops.

Winter calls for a comfy sweater, a burning fire and hearty food that sticks to your bones satisfying that primal winter craving. On those dark, snowy nights following the holidays, nothing is better than a cozy steakhouse, a glass of red wine and mashed potatoes. There is something so perfect about slicing into a wonderfully tender cut of medium-rare steak, because, well, steak is irresistible. Wondering what to order? Not a problem. Whether you prefer a petit filet, a t-bone or slab of marbled prime rib, the Reno/Tahoe area has something for everyone’s taste.

Within downtown’s Circus Circus Hotel Casino Reno is The Steakhouse at Circus. Affordable, with a casual atmosphere, The Steakhouse welcomes all walks of life, from families to professionals to young romantics. Brick walls are highlighted with porcelain figurines that complement the bouquets of calla lilies on the dining tables. Circus Circus prides itself on the Tomahawk prime rib. The rib eye is USDA Prime angus, prepared on the bone and slow cooked for eight hours. It is seasoned with a dry rub, full of savory herbs, thyme and, of course, salt and pepper. Pairing well with the prime rib are cabernets from Ferrari-Carano, Silver Oak and Camus vineyards – only the best from the Napa and Sonoma valleys. For a side, the decadent four-cheese mac & cheese or the specialty cream of spinach are delightful alternatives to the traditional baked potato. And, as the staff described, the mushroom caps are just gorgeous. The Steakhouse at Circus has its own niche, combining fun and elegant.

Lying on the outskirts of Reno inside Boomtown Casino Hotel is a hidden gem, Boomtown Steakhouse. Boomtown Steakhouse is not only festive, but the perfect location for casual fine dining. The wait staff is professional, amicable and knowledgeable. The chef puts an eccentric spin on the traditional Caesar salad, charring it so that it picks up a grilled taste. The Maryland-style crab cakes have hints of spice and sit in an aioli that makes the flavor pop. While Boursin mushrooms are lightly fried and stuffed with cheese and horseradish, creating a sweet yet spicy explosion. Diners can’t go wrong with the New York steak, deliciously prepared with garlic mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and sweet carrots. The other Boomtown Steakhouse special is a cowboy ribeye served with rosemary fingerling potatoes and

If Reno is outside the scope of your reach, then south shore’s treasure lies in the Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa. Ciera Steak and Chophouse is a traditional steakhouse, decorated with crimson leather booths, dim lighting and red velvet curtains. It transports you back to the glory age of steakhouses. The maitre d’ has worked for Ciera for over 20 years, and is happy to assist and recommend only the best. Through the window of the wine cellar, diners can view the expansive wine collection, which only adds to the romantic ambience. Starters include a lobster bisque or onion soup, essential for warming up after a long day skiing. The filet is fundamental for the meat-eaters palate, paired with a cabernet sauvignon and served alongside mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and carrots. Waiters recommend trying the black truffle salt ground over the steak, a

combination of salt, garlic and black truffle. For a final surprise, try the plump and juicy chocolate-covered strawberries, a sweet treat that ends the meal lusciously. Also located on Stateline is 19 Kitchen & Bar inside Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino. The restaurant stands on the 19th floor of the building and offers extraordinary views of Lake Tahoe. Through the windowlined walls, you can see crystal blue framed by snowcapped mountains all the way from south shore to Mount Tallac and north shore. 19 Kitchen and Bar offers a surf and turf selection, featuring lobster, abalone and diver scallops, along with risotto as an appetizer. While enjoying the winter views of the lake, you can dine on a delicately cooked 10-ounce filet mignon finished in a demi glaze, or a hearty 20-ounce

ribeye grilled with a dry rub. Experts suggest pairing with a Silver Oak cabernet sauvignon, or a Grgich Hills chardonnay if you prefer a light white. Further out in Minden is the Frenchinfused CV Steak in the Carson Valley Inn and Casino. Tourists travel out to the

valley specifically for this steakhouse. It is casually elegant, with dark wood and candles that is still spacious and comfortable. The short yet reasonably priced menu offers a nine-ounce filet mignon, New York and marbled ribeye. The manager suggests an appetizer of fresh oysters, shrimp or escargot, to be followed with any of the steaks, which arrive with a mixed green salad and either baked potato, twice baked potatoes or potatoes au gratin. A Napa zinfandel or a pinot noir are best to sip on with

these items, although the wine list at CV Steak extends far beyond these options. Can’t agree on a steakhouse with your family, but craving a tender cut? Try Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique in Tahoe City. Wolfdale’s always features an Argentinean filet mignon, made of the finest aged, grass-fed beef. Rubbed in a chimichurri sauce and topped in a demi-glaze, the steak melts in your mouth and is offered with any veggie side from portabella mushrooms to butternut squash potatoes. It changes nightly! Wolfdale’s is true Tahoe chic, with a friendly and intimate dining room overlooking the lake. The restaurant prepares only the highest quality, carefully prepared Angus beef. The chef recommends pairing with a Bordeaux blend or cabernet. You can’t go wrong ordering steak at any of these restaurants. They provide indulgent escapes to the bitter cold and snow outside. All steaks are perfectly prepared to order, and will warm your belly while providing a fine dining experience this winter.

Grab-N-Go Get your meal on the run in Reno/Tahoe By Heidi Bethel

Are you off to speed down a few double black diamonds? Headed on a wintry Sierra adventure? Rushing to catch a flight back home? Satisfy that rumble in your stomach with a few great food options for those in a rush.

Sprinting around the shores of Tahoe

While some enjoy a leisurely meal at many of the fantastic restaurants in the area, others are ready to get to business on the slopes. Make sure to stay well nourished with the wares from some local favorites offering delicious grub on the go. Located right along the lakeshore bike path, West Shore Market and Deli serves gourmet sandwiches, fresh salads and more — try their famous cubano for a toasty treat. In South Lake, Lira’s Supermarket is not your run-of-the-mill grocer. With a delicatessen and aisles of options, this is a locals favorite where you can quickly fill your basket with delicious hot and cold sandwiches and sides. This is a great quick stop on your way to and from Stateline. Just down the street you’ll find Verde Mexican Rotisserie with the BEST breakfast burritos around. Open daily at 8 a.m., it’s a delish stop for breakfast before the mountain or a great spot after a long day on the slopes. Mahogany Smoked Meats offers every kind of jerky you can think of, from beef to bison to wild boar. And, Ace High Saloon and Smokehouse is the place to go for a quick sandwich, specialty coffee and a slice of the most delicious barbecued items. They have a killer full breakfast menu if you have extra time.; loyaltylane. com;;;

Racing through Reno Quick dining options abound in the biggest little city! Grab a slice or a whole pizza from Noble Pie Parlor. At Rounds Bakery you can select from a great menu of wraps and bagel sandwiches. Be sure to try the #NotACronut — a community-recognized delicacy. If you’re looking to go purely healthy, head to BFF Café where you’ll find fuel packs filled with nutritious dishes including the BFF zoodle, grilled salmon plate and Thai salad ready for the taking.;; For something a bit more liquid, try Jüs with two locations carrying cold-pressed juices, smoothies, wheatgrass and ginger shots, and acai bowls. One of my favorites is the avocado bowl with avocado, pineapple, banana, acai, juiced apple, granola and honey. Yum! Something warmer? Geno the Soup Man is a beloved local soup purveyor with steamy and gazpacho-style concoctions available at Great Basin Community Food Co-op, Great Full Gardens Café and Whole Foods.;

Quick tour of Truckee and beyond Headed to another great vantage point? There’s some tasty grub in the quaint towns surrounding Reno/Tahoe. Coffeebar in Truckee is an Italian café brewing the best caffé affogato. You’ll want to try their breakfast bowls and paninis, too. (P.S. They also have a location in Reno.) In Carson City, Villa Basque Cafe celebrates some of this region’s Spanish history with housemade chorizo and a gourmet foods market with imported goods fit for a fancy wintertime picnic. The Carson Street Deli and Craft Beer Bar has a create-your-own sandwich menu that’s one to beat.; Whether you’re looking for a quick sandwich, salad or smoothie, Reno/Tahoe has food that’s super fast without compromising the quality.

Fun, family, friends, tasty food and lots of very good beers.

These Boots were Made for Walking When in Tahoe there’s nothing better than doing a boot scootin’ boogie all around the lake. Step into some cowboy boots. Lace up in adorable fashion-funky knee-highs. Slip into some snuggly UGGs as you veg by the fire. And, perhaps most importantly this season, slide down the slopes in new, slick ski or snowboard boots. No matter your size or style, Tahoe has a boot fit for every foot. By Britton Griffith-Douglass

Powder House Ski & Snowboard has nine locations with one devoted primarily to ski and snowboard boot fitting in Heavenly Village, South Lake Tahoe. They carry the hottest boots to wear in the cold snow. If you know you’ll be hopping on a chair lift, you need to make sure the people below look up and see your stylish soles. Powder House offers a demo center and brands like K2, Volkl, Blizzard and Faction. Stepping into the store, you are greeted by professionals who know all about ski and snowboarding. They’ll help you find exactly what you need on your toes to help make it down the mountain. If you already have your best boots in your closet, get them repaired and tuned here as well. After purchasing my new ski boots at Powder House, I know people will be watching this ski bunny’s feet.

I love to giddy up on vacation, no matter if it’s in daisy dukes or my warm wranglers, which is why this cowgirl always makes a run over to Bonanza Boot & Leather in South Lake. They have rows of Western style, both modern and classic. A great stop for guys and gals alike with hundreds of quality cowboy boots and gear to make sure you fit in at any rodeo. I tip my hat to the friendly and fun staff there ready to outfit every buckaroo in heel-to-toe horse-ready boots. Hitting the streets looking fabulous is simply the only way to walk. Sidestreet Boutique dresses patrons topto-bottom in the hottest fashion finds. Want to be cozy? Checkout their extensive UGG selection to get the right comfy kicks — some of my favorites are the cutest and warmest side button boots. The store has so many things to choose from including fun Isabel Iny jewelry and Rock Revival jeans. This boutique makes me feel beautiful and ready for a fireside chat with a splendid mountain view. They say true beauty comes from the inside. Well I know that mantra applies even when it comes under your boots. Sock City a.k.a. The Sock Store in Heavenly Village is ankle and toe heaven. With a variety of brands such as Happy Socks, HUF and SOCKSMITH, Sock City will make your feet feel funky and loved. This is the perfect onestop sock shop to buy all kinds of styles to wear under those new boots and gifts for friends and family.

With all the different boots from these Tahoe shops, I am ready to hit the snow, curl up by the fire, have a date and embrace my inner Wild Wild West. No matter where they came from, the design or even the function, all these new boots make my closet a bit brighter and put pep in my step!

Touch Tahoe

Floren started making the maps in 2015, on a small laser cutter out of his home. The original maps measured 13 inches by 17 inches, and Floren first sold one at a time at 22 Bistro in Squaw Valley. Then, Trunk Show out of Tahoe City began selling the maps. By December of 2015, Floren could barely keep up with the demand. Now, he and his team build Tahoe maps and maps of other cities out in Artech, an industrial space west of Reno’s downtown where entrepreneurs and artists create. To truly capture the depth of Tahoe’s blue layers, Floren created a proprietary dye to stain the Baltic Birch. Each map is carved from indigenous wood, made in the Reno/Tahoe area and assembled by hand. “Some people find a knot in the wood of their map, and I say it’s organic material, it’s part of the charm, it makes it unique,” Floren explains. Building each map is part art, part science. To create an accurate map with marks for different depths, altitudes, towns, roads and parks, Floren’s team created software to interpret data from the United States Geological Survey and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The software works with one of the two laser cutters Floren also built that carve each stratum of each map. “Even though the lasers cut it, each map has to be built by hand,” Floren says. The result? A map you can’t help but touch, examine and explore. Mine’s hanging in the living room. Now, I get a glimpse of peace every morning.

Building each map is part art, part science.

Tahoe Wood Maps creates detailed, 3-D maps of the jewel of the Sierra By Annie Flanzraich

here’s a feeling I get when I first see Tahoe on the drive over Mt. Rose or Spooner Summit. It’s as if I can breathe in the peace. Like the sight of Tahoe’s cool, blue waters wash over the ragged parts of my spirit and make me a little more whole again. I love that feeling. And for four years, I was lucky enough to feel it every day when I lived at the lake. Now, I live in Reno. And while the 40-minute drive is well worth it for a moment of peace, visiting Tahoe isn’t always on the day’s agenda. Photos suffice, but they fall short. There’s no depth. No tactile experience.

The closest experience I’ve found is running my fingers over the precise cuts of a 3-D wood map of the lake, created by Tahoe Wood Maps. Roger Floren and his team make each map by hand, and nestle Easter eggs for the observant (or those who made it this far in this article). There are “beers” (bear+deer=beer) situated at the location of each state park around the lake, because hey — that’s probably where you’d like to drink a beer. On the larger map, which is 31 inches by 24 inches, each street and chair lift is etched out to scale. “If you have people visiting, you can actually use this map to show them where places are in Tahoe,” Floren says.

evada has always been known as a new frontier, a place to hit a gold mine and the best in the Wild West for gun slinging, outlaws and rodeos. Recently, this pull-yourselfup-by-your-bootstraps mentally spread across the nation and many businesses are moving their startup and tech companies to the Silver State.

The new, booming industry includes international companies such as Tesla, Panasonic and Switch that are opening manufacturing facilities and establishing headquarters in the region. We also welcome newer and innovative businesses like CAEK, Filament and Trainer Road. Many of these companies have organically grown in their hometowns and are now crossing state borders to find better business opportunities. Nevada boasts more affordable tax structures and incentives supported by Governor Brian Sandoval, as well as the many other delegates and economic development initiatives within the state.;;;;

Quality of life

While companies are finding our entrepreneurial ecosystem is vibrant and economic benefits competitive, they also quickly recognize northern Nevada provides a positive quality of life for their employees. Tax incentives, low cost of living, and proximity and ease of transportation are not enough to uproot a corporation to a new state. You must appeal to your employee base, as well. Many millennials and tech-savvy professionals find the Sierra has adventure and culture rivaling the scenes in the biggest metropolitan areas. Reno/Tahoe is experiencing a ‘revival’ in our culinary scene, arts and culture programming. Plus we have the slopes and sand, to boot. With a brewery community quickly growing and distilleries like Pigeon Head Brewery, Brewer’s Cabinet, Tahoe Blue Vodka and IMBIB Custom Brews there is something to please every cheers-worthy palate.;;; Arts are our thing in the biggest little city. Burning Man, an internationally known and beloved art and music festival held in the Black Rock Desert, is finding a permanent home with sculptures from the fine event mounted all around the area — including the #BELIEVE metal letter structure by Reno City Hall and the Playa Art Park hosting up to 15 art pieces in downtown Reno. You can always catch a play at Good Luck Macbeth in Midtown and see a classic Broadway show in the Arts District at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.;; This region is a dream for outdoor adventure sports. A new wave of BOGA (stand up paddle board yoga) classes are hosted by Lake Tahoe Yoga. There are also guided tours and adventures to be had including music and art stops with Trails and Vistas.; Incentives enticing businesses to come to Reno is just the start for startups. Companies find it easy to blend work, life and play in the Sierra. People are moving their offices and their homes, creating a perfectly balanced life. It couldn’t be a better formula for tech gurus around the globe.

Winter Warmth By Meghan Burk

A girl’s guide to local hotspots to nip that Sierra chill

Ahhh … it’s winter. For as much as I love bundling up, hitting the slopes and sightseeing during these chilly months, it’s also nice to unravel and escape from the brisk mountain air. Here are some of my favorite ways to beat those cold weather blues and warm up from the inside out. Steamy experience

“Tost” with a complimentary glass of bubbly off East Ridge Run. Unbuckle those ski boots and relax in Adirondack chairs fireside. If free champagne isn’t enough, make your way to Northstar Village by 3:30 p.m. for complimentary s’mores. Cozy up next to the fire pits, chow down and then rent some ice skates to work on that triple axle. For some tunes and fiery entertainment, enjoy après ski in Heavenly Village at Azul Latin Kitchen and California Burger Co. They take center stage for live music, and will get you dancing in your ski gear. Lastly, for a dining experience to finish the night, make a reservation at Zephyr Cove Restaurant. This 1900s-style rustic lodge brings its own warmth to the room, along with the crackle of the fire in the grand stone fireplace.;;

Now you know the ways to thaw out, go explore all of those fun Reno/Tahoe snow adventures, then you’ll have an excuse to warm up again.

There’s no better way to thaw than taking a dip in natural hot springs. At 1862 David Walley’s Resort, skip around five mineral spas and geothermalheated pool, or warm up in the eucalyptus steam room. For a one-of-a-kind experience, book their Vichy Shower, a cascading mineral shower and scrub massage. For more warm weather dips, find an afternoon to relax and feel like a goddess at Spa Toscana inside the Peppermill Reno,this 33,000-square-feet Mediterranean retreat also hosts the nation’s only Caldarium, replicating an ancient Roman bathhouse. If you’re looking for a more private soak, relax under Tahoe’s stars in Nepheles private hot spa rooms complete with cocktail service!;;

Full monty from head to toe Sometimes you just need the complete treatment and these specialized services are sure to make you feel relaxed and, of course, all warm and fuzzy inside. You’re going to love the Hydrating and Detoxifying Wrap at BioSpirit Day Spa. Not only is it over an hour of “me” time, the wrap is a powerhouse of nutrients and you’ll feel detoxified no matter how many glasses of champagne you had the night before. Finish with the foot scrub or relaxing head massage for a truly satisfying experience. And of course, keeping those toes in mind, Soak Nail Spa and Lounge takes pedicure pampering to a new level. Their downtown Reno location is nestled in a two-story Victorian-era house where you can kick off those winter boots, soak your tootsies in a special silver bowl, relax in leather recliners and order the Seasonal Soak, which combines fresh seasonal lotions and potions, paired with a handpainted masque, and your choice of nail art or special cocktail (I’d go for the cocktail).;

Keep it fireside You can’t enjoy winter without cozying up next to the fire, so here are ways to enjoy both! The perks that come with your lift ticket to Northstar Resort is much more than just the pretty view. Every day at promptly 2 p.m., fellow skiers and riders can getaway reno/tahoe • 49

This best-kept secret is tucked away in beautiful Hope Valley, Calif., just 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. It’s the perfect blend of cozy and comfortable relaxation for outdoor lovers hoping to spend time away from emails and cell phones. And by the way, you won’t find any TVs, internet or cell service here, giving you the opportunity to read that book you packed. (You know what I’m talking about!)

Unplug from everyday life at Sorensen’s Resort

Whether it’s enjoying cross-country skiing across the Hope Valley meadows or watching snowflakes blanket freshly drawn snowshoe tracks as we explore 165 acres of forested backcountry in the Sierra, Sorensen’s Resort is my chance to take in all the natural distractions. This is where locals go to unplug and unwind from the hustle and bustle of life.

Offering an ideal mountain experience, enjoy endless recreation every season. In the fall, explore a wilderness hike or nature walk on their array of trails then relax, sipping mulled wine or hot cocoa as you cozy up next to the campfire. Kick up some snow in the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing across the valley floor, or take an exhilarating adventure with Hope Valley’s Husky Express dog sledding. Hosted workshops and other festivities are a special treat, from stargazing, to music, water coloring, photography and more, so be sure to check their schedule of events. Need to fuel those adventures? You’ll love the Sorensen’s Country Café. Serving three delicious meals a day, my favorite item on the menu is their signature beef burgundy stew complemented with a glass of red from their stock of fine wines. On your way out, pick up some memorabilia at the quaint gift shop to remember your already memorable time here. When you’re ready to plan your visit, check real-time weather conditions on their website. They are now an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station, giving you the most accurate weather and conditions for that blue bird fall day or perfect snowbound winter. Sorensen’s is also excited to announce their electric car plug-in stations, partnering with Tesla to support gas-free cars on the road and becoming a Supercharger location to help keep Tahoe blue and the Sierra green.
