Heber Valley Heber Valley, one of several mountain valleys in the Wasatch Mountains, is often called Utah’s Switzerland because of the rugged beauty of Mount Timpanogos, located to the west, as well as its climate and the large population of Swiss that settled in Midway on the west side of the valley. Located on the east side of the Wasatch Front (known to locals as the Wasatch Back), Heber Valley has evolved into a year-round recreation and vacation hub for many outdoor activities Utah has to offer. Fall is a wonderful time to visit when daytime temperatures in September and early October are pleasant and the fall colors are in their prime. But do come prepared; conditions can change quickly from golf weather to back country skiing in a matter of days! This is Utah after all. Heber Valley is close and easy to get to – U.S. Route 40 and U.S. Route 189 both cross the valley. Interstate 80 is located approximately 18 miles north 20 getaway SALT LAKE CITY, PROVO & PARK CITY

of Heber City and can be accessed via Highway 40, while Interstate 15 can be accessed via Highway 189 through Provo Canyon and is approximately 25 miles away. A typical drive to downtown Salt Lake City is approximately one hour. Park City is a quick 15 minute drive north. Sights to see – Mid-September to early October is an excellent time to see the fall colors as the hills surrounding the valley glow with shades of red, orange and gold. Highway 92, also known as the Alpine Loop, between Highway 189 and the town of Highland is a route that showcases some of Utah’s premier fall colors. A highlight along the way is Robert Redford’s Sundance Resort, nestled at the foot of majestic Mount Timpanogos. If you stop at the resort, check out the historic Owl Bar that was moved to Sundance from Thermopolis, Wyoming. The restored 1890s bar

is the original Rosewood Bar once frequented by Butch Cassidy’s Hole-inthe-Wall Gang. 877-369-1779, www. sundanceresort.com. Things to do – There is a plethora of year-round things to do in Heber Valley, which truly is a four-season destination. Early fall is a time when you can golf at one of several world-class golf courses, mountain bike on trails coated with Aspen leaves, hike and fish at the nearby Jordanelle, Deer Creek and Strawberry reservoirs. Later in the season, early winter weather will unveil Utah’s famous powder snow at the nearby ski resorts and back-country trails. Explore Utah’s back country by renting an ATV or snowmobile or go on a guided tour with a skilled and knowledgeable guide from Lofty Peaks Adventures. 888-472-7669, www.loftypeaks.com. For a bird’s eye view of Heber Valley,

Morning Star Balloons offers sunrise hot air balloon flights that sail quietly above this mountain Shangri-La. 801-6858555, www.mstarballoons.com. Heber City was once connected to Provo by a 32-mile long railroad line. The line, completed in 1899, was used by Denver & Rio Grande Western until 1967. Today, a portion of the line is used by the famous Heber Valley Railroad, a heritage railroad open to the public. 435-654-5601, www.hebervalleyrr.org. Fall represents many things to many people—a return to school, the beginning of the holiday rush, cooler days that allow more time outdoors—but one thing it means to most everyone in Utah, at least for a few short weeks, is color. When the chlorophyll is replaced by the xanthophyll and the carotene, scenic fall-foliage drives abound in Utah. Here is a sampling of the top 8 the Utah Travel Council recommends. 1. Brigham City – Logan – Bear Lake -Northern Utah Follow US 89-91 from Brigham City north to Logan via Sardine Canyon – 25 miles. Continue northeast from Logan on US 89 to Bear Lake through Logan Canyon, a National Scenic Byway, and the Wasatch-Cache National Forest – 40 miles. 2. Big Cottonwood Canyon – Guardsman’s Pass – Park City – Heber Valley -Wasatch Front 22 getaway SALT LAKE CITY, PROVO & PARK CITY

Check with the Forest Service for weekly fall color updates starting each September.

Head up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the point just below the village of Brighton, then take the Guardsman’s Pass road over the mountain to either Park City or Heber. Route passable in passenger car in good weather but not suggested for large recreational vehicles. www. parkcityinfo.com, www. hebervalleycc.org. 3. Alpine Loop – One of Utah’s Most Spectacular Scenic Drives -Wasatch Front Take UT 92 east from the Alpine/Timpanogos Cave National Monument and exit 287 off I-15, or exit 275 off I-15 in Orem and take UT 52 east to US 189 to UT 92. UT 92— The Alpine Loop—carves through dramatic mountain terrain as it traverses the

Uinta National Forest. Regional sites include Provo Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls,

Cascade Springs, Mt. Timpanogos, Tibble Fork Reservoir, Timpanogos Cave and Sundance Village. The route is paved but steep and narrow in places. 4. UT 12 – All American Road -Southern Utah Highway 12, a showcase of dramatic, naturally-sculpted sandstone, winds its way through some of the most stunning geography in the United States—Bryce Canyon National Park, the Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument, Capitol Reef National Park and thousands of acres of the Dixie National Forest. Although this route has been chronicled for years by the travel and automobile-enthusiast press, it defies description and must be seen first-hand. 5. Monticello to Blanding via

the Abajo Loop Scenic Backway -South Eastern Utah If you want to climb higher in the Abajo Mountains than the paved road allows, the Abajo Loop is for you! Ascending through mountainous terrain to just above 9,000 feet, this route immerses you in gold-leaf aspen and saffron maple scattered among the dark green fir. The road joins the Harts Draw Road five miles from Monticello via 200 South Street, just past the USFS Dalton Springs Campground. You immediately plunge into the bright yellow of an aspen grove as you begin to climb the Abajo Loop. You encounter turning aspen and scattered amber and saffron maple throughout the entire route. Sections of the road border the tree line and offer spectacular views into Colorado and New Mexico before you descend toward Blanding through more aspen and dusky gambel oak. High clearance 4WD essential. Call 435-587-3235 for route information and “best color” times. www. southeastutah.com 6. 7. Utah Highway 46 from US 191 East to the Colorado Border. Eastern Utah Resting on the southern slope of the Manti La Sal National Forest/ LaSal Mountains, this route begins 32

miles north of Monticello and climbs to 7,000 feet in La Sal. The first section of the route crosses the high desert, where ochre rabbit brush is an early harbinger of fall. The tiny town of La Sal is marked by venerable cottonwoods. Leaving La Sal, the route climbs over La Sal Hill through acres of deep green ponderosa before descending to Old La Sal in a mountain meadow. Continuing beyond Old La Sal, the road enters La Sal Creek Canyon, where colors run riot with fall asters, cottonwood, oak and shrubs decked out in maize, flax and ochre. About 20 miles beyond La Sal the view opens, suddenly revealing Colorado’s Paradox Valley. High clearance 4WD essential for off-road touring. University of Utah

Utah to the Pac 12 If 30, 20, 10 or even 5 years ago you would have told a Utah fan, alumnus, or student that on September 10, 2011 the Utah football team would play the USC Trojans in the LA Coliseum in the first ever PAC 12 conference football game, they would have laughed in your face. That is exactly what will happen. The UTES will take on USC on September 10 in the opening game of the PAC 12, the new conference formed by the PAC 10 when they added the University of Utah and Colorado University to their family. The questions, benefits, and opportunities that arise with the new conference for the Utes are endless. Will 36 getaway SALT LAKE CITY, PROVO & PARK CITY

they be able to compete in football, or will they wilt under the pressure of the “week to week grind” of playing quality teams every week? Will they be able to compete in any of the Olympic sports, tennis, swimming, track and field, etc, or will they be relegated to 13th out of 12? Will they be able to keep up with the funding needs to compete in all sports and get all their facilities to a competitive level? The financial benefit to the Utah athletic department is incredible. In the Mountain West Conference the Utes received $1.2 million per year in TV revenue and rights, in the Pac 12 this

becomes approximately $21 million. Understand, all the other Pac 12 schools also receive the same $21 million. The University of Utah’s budget is still $1012 million less than the lowest school’s budget in the conference, Washington State. The Utes have done more with less over all the years and will need to continue to do so. The association with the other PAC 12 schools academically is a boon to the U. The research institutions and the academic standards of the PAC 12 schools are a wonderful fit and benefit to all who are involved with and attend the University of Utah. The

membership allows the U to recruit and hire the best of the best for faculty and administration and to recruit the brightest minds to attend and enhance the student body. A student’s degree is now even more valuable as it is from a “PAC 12” school.

New Mexico to Albuquerque, or the emptiness of Qualcomm stadium. No, now we get to visit Seattle, the Oregon coast, San Francisco and Berkeley, Southern California, and even Arizona for some great golf in November as the snow is beginning to fly in Utah.

the conference championship game for a trip to the Granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl. It is incredible to think the UTES don’t have to have a perfect season to get to a BCS bowl game, just win the division and one more game and they are in the Rose Bowl.

As UTE fans, the move is beyond our wildest dreams. We will miss our friends and former conference mates greatly, but not necessarily the sub zero temperatures and howling winds of Laramie, the 10 hour drive across I-80 in a blinding blizzard, the chant of REEEBEELS in sin city, Vegas, the desolate stretch of road from Gallup,

Will the Utes compete in Football, the driving force in all of this? They are in the new PAC 12 south division with USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado. With USC ineligible for post season play and a schedule very favorable to the UTES, they are in a great position this year to compete for the south division title and a spot in

Wow, it is great to be among the haves. This is an incredible change for the University of Utah, it’s alumni and fans. It truly is a great time to be a UTE!

In the Kitchen At Frida Bistro, passion for food makes each dish a masterpiece

Frida’s Mango Habanero Margarita has a refreshing taste with a bite and is a favorite among dinners

What began in a small kitchen 14 years ago, has now morphed into one of Salt Lake City’s hottest new restaurant concepts, Frida Bistro. Inspired by the passion and individuality with which Frida Kahlo pursued her art and life, owner Jorge Fierro’s passion has evolved from providing quality homecooked Mexican food at the local farmer’s market to developing a unique dining experience in the heart of the Warehouse District on the west side of Salt Lake City. From the eye-popping colors to the eclectic local art proudly displayed throughout the dining room, guests are sure to experience a feast intended for

40 getaway SALT LAKE CITY, PROVO & PARK CITY

all the senses. The cuisine hails from the Mexican interior and is prepared from scratch using only the freshest ingredients and traditional Mexican cooking techniques. However, this is not your typical Mexican restaurant. Whether you decide on Chef Chano Mendez’s Braised Pork-Shank Chamorro for dinner or Sous Chef Raul Mendez’s Octopus Tacos for lunch, you will know that you are experiencing something truly unique. And don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t get a good margarita in this city… the Mango and Habanero Margarita with sugared rim will convince you otherwise. Using only fresh-squeezed lime juice and organic agave nectar, each delicious option on our custom margarita menu is a hand-crafted work of art. The kind of art you will come to expect at Frida Bistro. Over the past 14 years “in the kitchen” has meant many different things to Jorge Fierro and his business. What it means now is better experienced first-hand… come Make Love to Our Food!

Classic American The brewmasters at the Bohemian craft their beers according to the ancient German Purity Law known as “Reiheitsgebot.” If you’re feeling manly, then ask for a Hefeweizen or Lager by the same name. There’s no doubt about it, when it comes to beer, they just get it. But the food is just as good. Sample the traditional German Schnitzel, or munch on delicious, fresh crab cakes. For dessert? Apple Strudel! Enjoy dining on the patio during the Summer months.

Poplar Street Pub combines a real friendly neighborhood Pub feel with a great menu and fun times. The first think you’ll notice as you enter the poplar street pub is the cozy tavern feel. Whether you choose a table for dinner, a stool at the bar, or a spot back in the game room, you’ll feel right at home. The heated patio is a relaxing place to enjoy a good meal with a glass of wine, a burger and beer, or an appetizer and some cocktails. The Menu at Poplar Street Pub includes appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees, and fresh hand-tossed pizza. Take, for instance, the Chicken Piccata Pizza with white garlic cream sauce, Mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, and fresh basil, you have to taste it to believe it. The authentic, homemade Chili Verde just might be the best anywhere in Utah (if not the world).

But the local secrets of the Poplar menu are the Shrimp or Fish Tacos. People come from all over Salt Lake to bite into these tasty treats. There are daily lunch specials so the Poplar Street Pub is a great place for lunch, dinner, or while watching the game. Thursday through Saturday evenings Poplar Street Pub has live music—and one of the best places to eat in Salt Lake becomes one of the best places to relax, dance, and meet new people.

If you are in Utah, looking for a pub with daily food specials and an old neighborhood bar feel, stop by Poplar Street Pub, conveniently located within walking distance from all the downtown hotels.

It takes more than just a game plan to succeed. Winning takes determination, commitment and careful execution from the entire team including Title, Mortgage, Inspectors and more. It means giving it your all when it counts. And when all have been exhausted, reaching down and finding that extra energy to take you into the end zone. Thirty-eight years ago, inspired by the towering mountains that reminded them of their homeland, two men costumed in leather lederhosen came to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort to play their accordions and sing in their native German tongue. Over the years, Oktoberfest has become the premier celebration of German food, music, dancing and fun. Attracting more than 80,000 visitors over the 17day celebration, Oktoberfest has grown to become one of the largest festivals in the state of Utah. The festivities take place in Oktoberfest Halle, a venue featuring the tastes of Bavaria and entertainment from local and national German bands and yodelers. Kinderland offers fun for children, including face painting, a caricature artist, the world-champion Yo-Yo Man, a zany clown, music and balloons.
