THE GOOGLE OFFICE

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA

This impressive five-story office building—Googles first ground up mass timber development—sets new standards for biophilic and structural design, construction techniques, material sourcing, and carbon reduction. Google approached 1265 Borregas with a goal to create a scalable building solution that puts health and sustainability first as they work towards their goal to operate on carbon-free energy by 2030.

Elegant in its simplicity, the LEED Platinum building leverages mass timber to dramatically reduce carbon emissions and create a warm, welcoming, and healthy workspace.

Architects mixed single- and double-height spaces and connected them with a four-story atrium illuminated by a timber-glass skylight, bringing natural sunlight into the space and creating both visual and physical connections between teams and individuals within the building. Glue-laminated timber beams and columns and cross-laminated timber CLT panels are left exposed throughout the interior. Knowing that adaptability is essential for Googles business, designers worked to provide flexibility for future reconfigurations that maximize long-term functionality of the space.

Unique design elements add to the buildings comfort and energy efficiency. An innovative envelope system filters light through a closed-cavity skin with climate-controlling wooden blinds and high-performance glass, creating a façade that gives the illusion of a natural, timber-clad building. Responding to the levels of sunlight, the blinds reduce operating and energy costs, while limiting glare and views out to the landscape.

The buildings exterior is also distinguished by soaring cantilevers, which create covered outdoor seating areas and invite light into the interior. These 14-foot cantilevered floor plates were made possible using an innovative wood-concrete composite system that connected CLT panels with concrete beams and slabs using glued-in shear connectors. The assembly met span and loading requirements while reducing beam depths.

Biophilic design strategies distinguish Googles 1265 Borregas from other offices. The design team used mass timber to emphasize occupant health and well-being, blending natural materials with daylit interiors, views, and organic textures to create a workplace that aligns naturally with the companys commitment to innovation and collaboration.

With this building, Google shows that it places a high priority on the health of both their people and the environment. The project demonstrates how they were able to meet ambitious biophilic and sustainability goals by using mass timber to build a high-performance building.

OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

MICHAEL GREEN ARCHITECTURE is a Vancouver-based studio internationally recognized for advancing mass timber construction and climate-conscious design. Led by Michael Green, the practice explores how architecture can support ecological responsibility, resilient ­communities, and a more sustainable built environment.

THE GOOGLE OFFICE

In 2020 we completed two new mass timber buildings for the internationally recognized College of Forestry at Oregon State University. Located on campus the new Peavy Hall and the AA Red Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory AWP upholds the College vision to create a dynamic learning, collaboration, and research environment for managing and sustaining working forest ecosystems in the 21st Century.

The project design approach was created in collaboration with multiple College departments and user groups across various functions, including resource management, ecosystems and society, and engineering. Engagement with these unique and diverse groups meant that the buildings themselves were designed to be teachers and a living laboratory – something to interact with and to learn from.

These two new buildings extend beyond forestry to include the entire ecosystem, the industries that importantly, the wide variety of people who will be environmental stewards of our future: the students.

The AA Red Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory 18,000 sq.ft. is home to the Tall Wood Design Institute, which brings together industry and academia to advance knowledge about the use of wood products through applied research, product development, and professional education. The building provides dedicated research spaces for developing and testing innovative wood products while producing data that can be applied in research and industry.

The AWP program required an expansive space to allow for the flexibility to test and adapt to technologies as they emerged. The building structure is a simple and elegant glulam and MPP system that works together to achieve the long span required. The unique design of the AWP building enclosure includes an integration of translucent panels and structural wood panels, creating a beautiful daylit high bay lab space that becomes the backdrop for innovation.

Peavy Hall is one of two new mass timber buildings we designed for the internationally recognized College of Forestry at Oregon State University. These new additions to the campus uphold the College’s vision to create a dynamic learning, collaboration, and research environment for managing and sustaining working forest ecosystems in the 21st Century.

The new Peavy Hall is connected to the complex natural layers, systems, and networks of a forest, from soil to sky. The many unique characteristics of a forest ecosystem play into the character of the building, giving the design deeper meaning. The building is designed as two intersecting bars, connected to the existing Richardson Hall. A simple academic bar features 20 classrooms, computer rooms, and laboratories.

Classroom and lab spaces range from small to large and interior to exterior, facilitating a range of teaching styles in an inspiring environment for students to study all aspects of the forest landscape. The Roseburg Forest Products Atrium, at the heart of Peavy Hall, is shaped by towering two-storey Douglas fir columns and captures the feeling of being in the forest. The Atrium is directly connected to the Peavy Arboretum, a curated collection of local plant species that acts as a living classroom for forestry students, community, and industry.

Familiarity and recognition go hand in hand. A silhouette, the feeling of an object, a color or a texture we have encountered before carry us back to what we already know. This is especially true when such characteristics can be traced to nature.

It is a line of reasoning that has long informed the perspective of Stockholmbased design and architecture studio TAF Studio, founded by Gabriella Lenke and Mattias Ståhlbom. The shapes we find in nature are inherently efficient, optimized for survival, and linked to cognitive fluency, which makes them feel more natural and pleasing. “What attracts us to shapes often differs as it depends on its context as well as its materiality, colors and texture,” Ståhlbom explains. “You can find numerous shapes in nature yet bringing them into a specific context is what gives the shape its meaning, like creating a lamp out of a shape,” he adds.

A philosophy that the designers have beautifully manifested in two lamps: the Ambit and Rime. For the Ambit Lamp Series, form was its very point of departure. They explored the combination of a soft, round form with an angular one; the triangular shape meets the cord in a natural way at the top and opens up at the bottom to give light. “Starting by turning the geometry of the design into a threedimensional form, we wanted to find a silhouette that could work in multiple spatial contexts, whether it be in any room of a home, office, commercial space or hospitality project,” says Lenke. Even at a glance, the lamp’s versatility becomes clear, showing how it can introduce both softness and a sense of robustness across a wide range of interior styles. In addition to contour, tactility and variation were key factors in the development of the prototype. Made from hand-spun aluminum and finished by hand, the Ambit Lamp Series consists of various lighting iterations, in multiple sizes and colors, ranging from the classic pendant and rail lamp to the Ambit Wall Lamp.

KITAYAMA The village energized by rafting and a superfruit For hundreds of years, the villagers of Kitayama made a living by felling trees on the densely wooded mountains of the Kii Peninsula, bundling them into makeshift rafts, and riding them 40 miles (60 kilometers) downriver through treacherous rapids to the port of Shingu. There, the sought-after cedar would be shipped to construction projects around the country, while the rafters would begin an arduous trek upstream with their oars.

The tradition—called ikada-kudari—continued until the 1960s, when improved road networks in this once hard-to-reach area made log transportation by truck safer and more efficient. Safer is a keyword here, given that riding the rapids on logs was considered so dangerous in the Edo era (16031868) that it was off-limits for firstborn sons.

But that wasn’t the end of the tradition. In the late 1970s, as part of a regional revitalization project, the village resurrected ikada-kudari as a unique sightseeing attraction, offering rides on snaking log rafts guided by teams of ikadashi rafters.

I have been a longtime admirer of Kimberly Amos’s natural and seemingly effortless design aesthetic from afar through seeing imagery of her iconic hotel property, The Atlantic. In 2017, I was fortunate enough to stay at The Atlantic in Byron Bay for a week during my first visit to Australia. Every aspect of the property was magically considered: the layout, the decor, the smells and sounds—it somehow felt more like home than my own home. The Atlantic was an epicenter for cultural events, artist residencies, and parties. It was a magnet for creative energy, which both attracted and, in turn, inspired likeminded guests. Kim, her partner, Stephen, and three sons all lived on the property, so you could really feel the love in the attention to every detail. Even the staff felt like extended family. They have since sold The Atlantic after 20 years and settled into their River House, a restful sanctuary where creativity is incubated and nourished among their tight-knit family.

When did you get The Atlantic hotel property?

What is the origin story there?

We bought The Atlantic over 20 years ago when it was a tired old backpacker. We moved onto the property with our three young sons and wanted to create something that felt like home for surfing families traveling through Byron. We started to chip away house by house, making spaces we’d actually want to stay in.

The inspiration came from our own travels—surf trips to Hawaii and California, summers spent in the Caribbean, combined with the laid-back surf shacks of the Australian coastline.

On the other hand, what have been the greatest rewards?

Without question, the people—guests who arrived as strangers and left as friends. Watching our boys grow up in that environment was a reward in itself— skateboarding through the gardens, helping out with renovations, making art on every inch of the property, connecting with people that would then welcome them into their homes as they explored the world as young adults. The simple stuff: walking through the property at dusk, fire crackling, music drifting through the kitchens, boards stacked by the gate, and feeling the energy of it all.

What are your favorite parts of your home?

The River House is where I slip out of the rhythm of running The Atlantic and into something slower and more personal. It’s my place to create, recover, and entertain friends. I love the objects woven through this house. The stair balustrade with old floats from my dad’s sailing days, the lights I made with my youngest son, Arlo. Noa has a sculpting studio, Hunter has a painting studio when he returns from living abroad, and the studio table is the heart of it all. It’s where we gather, swap ideas, cook, and make—it’s where all the magic happens.

Tell us about your art and design aesthetic.

When I visited The Atlantic, I was blown away by the styling and attention to detail. Where do you draw inspiration from in your work?

For me, design has always been about being unique rather than replicating what’s already out there. I like a house that has its own story. That’s why I like to work with handmade and found objects. These pieces may not be perfect, but they hold memories, and that makes a space feel alive and interesting. Our homes have always been filled with our sons’ artworks and friends that have stayed with us or lived with us through artist residencies.

What are your favorite things about Byron Bay and the surrounding area?

It’s all the in-between moments for me. The open beaches after a storm when, the beachcombing is next level. The afternoons at The Pass when the sun is setting over the mountains and the BBQs are fired up with

What have been the biggest challenges of running your own business?

The hardest part has always been the balancing act of raising kids while building a business that never really sleeps. When you live on-site, the lines blur: hosting events, checking in guests, keeping the noise down

What were some highlights from your days owning the hotel?

Hosting the surf festival events, for sure. We had people from every corner of the world: legends, groms, filmmakers, shapers, musicians, free-spirited water people who carried the same salt in their veins. It felt less like a hotel and more like a cultural camp of good times.

Any parting thoughts, words of wisdom, or sage advice?

Build a life that feels like your own, and always make time to jump in the ocean. It has a way of setting everything back on course.

Modern Onsen With the frenetic pace of modern life and its increasing hunger for variety, the practice of toji has declined.

The love of onsen, however, has not diminished, and many visitors now choose shorter getaways, often as part of an onsen meguri (温泉めぐり—onsen pilgrimage). Otherwise known as onsen-hopping, this sees the visitor bathing at multiple onsen over a short period of time, in a concentrated area like a single town.

According to Japan’s Hot Springs Law, in order to qualify as an onsen, a hot spring must contain a certain amount of mineral components, originate at a depth of over 0.93 miles (1.5 kilometers) underground, and have a water temperature of 77 °F (25 °C) or higher at the outlet. Further categorization separates them into “volcanic hot springs” and “non-volcanic hot springs,” or due to characteristics such as color, temperature, odor, and mineral composition.

Onsen waters typically fall into simple alkaline or slightly acidic categories, with waters at pH 8 and above known as bijin-no-yu (美人の湯—hot spring of beauty). This particular type of onsen is extremely popular with the beauty-conscious, as the thick, viscous quality of the water is said to result in lovely, smooth skin. Gensen kakenagashi (源泉掛け流し— free-flowing spring) is widely regarded as the most sought-after and purest onsen form, as it flows continuously and directly from the natural source into the bath without treatment (adding normal water to control temperature) or recirculation (when the water is recycled back and treated).

Kantapon Metheekul, better known as Gongkan, slips between worlds—not just in life, but in art. His most iconic work, the Teleport series, began on the streets of New York, where he had relocated after leaving behind a career in advertising in Bangkok. As a Thai artist in a foreign city, he faced culture shock, anonymity, and mounting self-doubt. To cope, he started painting portals: stark silhouettes entering and emerging from black voids, visual metaphors for movement, escape, and reinvention.

“I felt stuck,” he recalls, “unable to succeed as an artist, but too far gone to turn back. Teleport came from that pressure.” His portals weren’t just symbols of escape—they became ways to visualize the uncertainty of living between cultures, between who he was and who he was trying to become.

Born and raised in Bangkok, Gongkan studied at Silpakorn University before heading overseas in search of creative freedom. In the beginning, the portals were pure escapism—an imagined way out, a fantasy of disappearing into somewhere freer, easier, lighter. But over time, something shifted. As he painted more, the void stopped pointing outward and began turning inward. “Now I see the portal as a door inward,” he says, “a way to check in with myself—am I okay? Am I still whole?” The black silhouettes, once symbols of departure, became invitations to pause, reflect, and come home to the self. No longer about leaving, his work started asking what it meant to truly arrive—within one’s own mind, identity, and sense of peace.

After a period of depression, he returned to the Buddhist teachings he had once brushed aside. Meditation allowed him to be present, to stop chasing, and start listening. This return to mindfulness now quietly guides his work, blending surreal aesthetics with grounded introspection.

Teleport Boy, his recurring character, began as a wide-eyed traveler. But like his creator, he’s matured— less concerned with escape than with understanding. “He’s not just me anymore,” Gongkan explains. “He’s everyone.

A reminder to slow down, to look inward.”

Today, Gongkan is one of Thailand’s most internationally recognized artists, with solo exhibitions across Asia and collectors like Tim Cook praising his vision. But acclaim has only deepened his curiosity. “Freedom isn’t elsewhere,” he says. “Sometimes, it’s just on the other side of yourself.”

hen the footballer-turned-style-leader David Beckham wore a sarong over his trousers while socializing during the 1998 World Cup in France, it created a media storm—one mostly made of ridicule. “Beckham has got his Posh frock on,” said British newspaper The Sun, a reference to his girlfriend and soon-to-be-wife, Victoria “Posh Spice” Adams. “Today,” as Beckham noted in 2018, “nobody bats an eyelid if a guy wears a sarong on the street.”

Beckham had become something of a patron saint for a new consumer demographic dubbed—in 1994, by writer Mark Simpson— the metrosexual. Simpson would describe the metrosexual as “a young man with money to spend, living in or within easy reach of a metropolis. … He might be officially gay, straight, or bi, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object.”

And this type was redefining ideas of masculinity that had been rigid for generations—not least in his interest in his appearance, pioneering gym culture, and the use of a wave of men’s grooming brands that would launch around the same time.

Twenty-five years later, Beckham would wear eye shadow for the cover of Love magazine (specifically the teal shade worn by David Bowie in his video for “Life on Mars?”). By that time, the metrosexual type was less the subject of ridicule and, driven by a boom in men’s style media and TV programs such as the rebooted Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, increasingly the standard for members of Generation Z. Indeed, while rock and pop stars had long signaled their difference to the mainstream through the wearing of makeup, the metrosexual prefigured it being worn by, if not the everyman, then at least more men. By the mid-2000s, public figures from comedians—the likes of Russell Brand—to actors, among them Jared Leto and Johnny Depp, were embracing what was dubbed “guyliner.”

So widespread was the wearing of eyeliner among these new metrosexuals that the bassist and lyricist for the band Fall Out Boy, Pete Wentz, even made a YouTube video on how he applied his eyeliner. “I started wearing it because I felt like it tested some boundaries,” he told NPR. But this, it turns out, had its limits: “wearing it to the point where people only recognize you as ‘the guy who wears eyeliner.’ I don’t really wear it anymore because of that,” he later explained to Elle magazine in 2008.

By then, even if the idea of men wearing more extensive makeup remained challenging for much of society, eyeliner had become something approaching acceptable, both on the red carpet and off: Zac Efron, Pharrell Williams, Ezra Miller, Channing Tatum, Austin Butler, John Travolta, Lil Nas X (who would front an advertising campaign for YSL Beauty), and even—it was alleged—U. S. Vice President JD Vance. Eyeliner would perhaps prove the gateway drug for a wider embrace of makeup by men.

Above Offscreen and on, actor Johnny Depp chooses eyeliner. Opposite American actor and musician Jared Leto in shimmering blue eye shadow challenges the conventional red-carpet rules for Hollywood’s leading men.

In 1992, a youth group of about 70 well-intentioned spelunkers entered the Mayrières Cave in southwestern France. Equipped with steel brushes, they set about scrubbing graffiti off the cave walls. Unfortunately, one of the pieces of graffiti they partially scrubbed off was a 15,000-year-old prehistoric cave painting of a bison. “Absolutely stupid!” said René Gachet, a director of cultural affairs. The youth group fired back, saying the cave should have been properly designated with signs.

Everyone is familiar with the Michelangelo painting The Creation of Adam. Fewer people are familiar with the destruction of Adam.

“Oh shit.” These were reportedly the words of casino mogul Steve Wynn after accidentally putting his elbow through Le Rêve (The Dream). Not only was the original Picasso valued at $139 million—he had just sold it.

The clip on YouTube received over seven million views. In July of 2017, a Los Angeles woman was visiting an art gallery by Hong Kong–based artist Simon Birch when she posed for the perfect selfie. In fairness, the exhibit had been reviewed as a selfie heaven of sorts.

Adam, by the 16th-century sculptor Tullio Lombardo, is widely considered the finest Renaissance sculpture of the first man. He survived the forbidden fruit, the snake, and the creation of shame itself, but he could not survive the Metropolitan Museum. One October evening in 2002, the conservators of the Met were dismayed to find that the plywood pedestal holding him up had buckled. “It could have been foul play,” said Jack Soultanian, a conservator who was at the museum that night. Either way, the six-foot-three sculpture fell to the floor, shattering into 28 major fragments and “hundreds” of very small fragments. Adam was also decapitated.

The painting, along with the deal, was punctured. All of Wynn’s friends who witnessed the costly gesticulation agreed to a vow of silence, which was broken within a week when the story leaked to The Washington Post. But the nightmare of The Dream turned in Wynn’s favor when, in 2013, he sold a restored version of Le Rêve for a casual $155 million to a hedge fund manager. The moral of this one? Rub elbows with hedge fund managers.

The Los Angeles Times called the gallery a “series of wondrous, over-the-top sets for the perfect selfie.” After rotating the camera and finding her light, she stumbled back into a row of pedestals holding “12 crown-like sculptures, which were made from a variety of different materials, including precious metals.” The pedestals were knocked over one by one, like a row of destructive dominoes, worth approximately $200,000.

The restoration project is now the stuff of artworld legend. After a 12-year effort involving scientists, engineers, curators, conservators, and even doctors (Adam needed the equivalent of a rhinoplasty), the piece went back on display.

LOLA MONTES SCHNABEL A SICILIAN LUNCH WITH FRESH ARTICHOKES

Barefoot and wearing a charcoal silk dress, New York-born artist Lola Montes Schnabel is climbing a lemon tree in her citrus garden in the southern Sicilian town of Scicli. She reaches for the highest yellow fruits, throws a few into a straw basket, leaps off the trunk and scrapes her calf on a nettle bush. “They’re prickly when you pick them but they can clean your blood when boiled,” she says. She wanders to a wooden table in a sunny stone courtyard and starts peeling dozens of artichokes for the lunch that she is hosting. “Remember to ask the fruttivendolo not to cut off the stalks,” she says, holding a rather short one. “You might think that they’re not edible but they’re delicious when they’re cooked.” She tops up an indigo-trimmed white bowl with water and plops the peeled artichoke hearts inside, where they float with squeezed lemons in the midday light.

On her first visit to Sicily more than a decade ago, Schnabel was contemplating Caravaggio during a pilgrimage across Italy for an essay that she was writing about the painter.

“I imagined him walking the streets and thinking about what to paint and I knew then that I wanted to have a house on this island one day,” she says explaining how she found a masseria near the baroque town of Scicli several years later.

In the kitchen, she arranges carmine tulips, sunflowers and roses in jugs on a marble-top table. “This ceramic vase was my grandmother’s,” she says, tightening her grip on a heavy white amphora with orange and navy accents. “It’s one of the two objects that I asked for when she died.” She fills it with flowers and gently places it against a Sicilian majolica blue-and-white tiled wall.

For Schnabel, bliss is big open spaces, the dusty light, the island’s fresh produce and a studio at home. “In New York, commuting would take hours, just so I could paint in a room in an industrial area,” she says, gesturing to her surroundings. “Here I step into the courtyard and I’m ready to get started. I feel the volcano, I hear the birds and I can see the sky. I could have only made this work by the ancient Mediterranean.” After growing up in New York in a home of artists and graduating from Cooper Union college, Schnabel ventured to Latin America, Asia and Europe and collaborated

with artisans. “I try to find the folklore of a place: I’ve worked with silver in Mexico and carved paintings into slabs of wood in Haiti,” she says, twirling a lock of curly copper hair behind her ear. “Ceramic craft in Sicily was a natural step.”

The precise formula of the clay is secret, like all good recipes, but she hints that it contains volcanic ash from Mount Etna. “When you pick up a tile [before painting it], you tap it as if it were a melon,” she says; this is to ascertain whether it will crack or hold in the heat. When she opens the oven to see the final results, she is always excited. As with cooking, colours can change and using the correct amount of each ingredient is crucial. “The tiles have to be fresh and you have to know how to cook them.” In the kitchen the artichokes are boiled, drained (“I keep the water and drink it the day after,” she says) and steeped with sage, mint and garlic in abundant L’Amata (“The Loved One”) olive oil, made from her partner’s olives. After mixing Sardinian beer and flour for the Japanese batter that she needs for the next recipe – “an Asian take on stuffed, fried zucchini flowers” – she fills some of the flowers with fresh mozzarella from Masseria Sgarlata and some with ricotta from a nearby farm. “Lina and Pietro make their own ricotta every day,” she says, digging into the still-warm cheese with a piece of anchovy sott’olio.

Striding to one end of the room, Schnabel contemplates a round wooden table, where ceramic bowls and plates are filled with vegetables and fruit. With its reds, purples and greens, it resembles a painter’s palette and it feels as though she is about to dip her brush. She picks up onions, parsley and tomatoes for her version of a tabbouleh, pulls out a chopping board and dices the ingredients into small pieces before mixing them in a bowl with lemon juice and salt. On an embroidered linen tablecloth, which Schnabel bought at a nearby flea market, she places handmade knives from Damiano on the island of Patmos next to her ceramic plates, bowls and cups. “I don’t want to be a designer and make dinnerware,” she says. “There are a lot of good designers in the world but there are not that many female painters. I have an obligation to my teachers, to my mentors and to my art.”

300 grams (10oz) young tender nettles

In the mountainous region around Bergamo ravioli called carunsei in the local dialect are traditionally made di magro (meaning ‘lean’ or ‘without meat’). In this recipe they are filled with a mixture of nettles, cheese, breadcrumbs and egg yolks and served with a delicious walnut and cream sauce.

Always use rubber gloves when handling nettles. Once cooked they lose their stinging qualities. If nettles are unavailable, you can use spinach, chard, or beet tops instead.

125 grams Gruyere cheese, grated 50 grams (1/2 cup) freshly grated grana padana or parmesan cheese 2 egg yolks a grating of nutmeg salt freshly ground black pepper For the Walnut Sauce: 250ml (1 cups) single cream

FOOD & DRINK

To make the filling, carefully wash the nettles and cook in a covered saucepan for 5 to 7 minutes or until tender. The water clinging to the leaves is sufficient to prevent scorching. Drain well and chop finely.

Combine the two cheeses in a mixing bowl and add the egg yolks and nettles. Mix well and season with nutmeg, salt and black pepper.

Prepare the pasta dough as directed for tagliolini on page 000.

Roll the dough out into two thin very thin sheets. Place heaped teaspoonfuls of the filling over one sheet of dough at regular intervals about 5 cm apart. Cover with the other sheet of dough and press well around each mound.

Cut the ravioli into 5 cm squares with a pastry or ravioli cutter. Line them up in on a lightly floured board one layer and leave to dry for 15 minutes.

To make the sauce, heat the cream in a heavy saucepan and cook over a moderate heat until it is reduced. Add the walnuts and butter and stir well. Simmer for a few more minutes.

Meanwhile cook the ravioli in plenty of lightly salted boiling water for 5 minutes or until tender. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a heated serving bowl. Pour over the sauce and serve at once.
